10:00And so we would be able to track her car location through that
10:05But in order for us to be able to do that, we had to log in through her email
10:09So we had to transfer her phone number over to a new phone to be able to access all of that stuff
10:15Once they got into Jazzy's email account, they found out that the passwords to her bank and social media accounts had been changed
10:24It sounds like you all went into full investigation mode
10:27I think that idea was out there of let's use what we can
10:33By now, the family had accessed Jazzy's car app
10:38Since the last time the family saw her, her car had been to two locations
10:43And it was still at one of them, Mountain Creek Road
10:48Jazzy's mom and stepdad raced over
10:51Gabby arrived shortly after
10:53And there it was
10:55In the parking lot, Jazzy's SUV
10:58But no sign of Jazzy
11:01Immediately we see her family is resourceful
11:05Jazzy's half-sister Gabby told me that she looked in the car window
11:09And noticed that the driver's seat was pushed all the way back
11:12That indicated that a tall person had been behind the wheel
11:16Well, Jazzy was short
11:18Gabby told me that that was her first moment of real dread
11:21Knowing that for whatever reason, someone else had been driving her sister's car
11:26And left it in this strange place
11:28Jazzy's mom called the police
11:31Hello
11:32And before long, a patrol officer showed up
11:35Body cam rolling
11:37So what's going on exactly?
11:39That's mom Katrina on the left
11:40Stepdad Scott on the right
11:42They told the officer everything they'd learned so far
11:46She's been missing for four days
11:48So Tuesday night
11:49At 1127, she left our house
11:52And went to a house on
11:54Or a place on Frazier Avenue
11:55Wednesday, it left Frazier Avenue
11:58Came right here
11:59Hadn't been moved since
12:00Hadn't been moved since
12:01I pulled up her phone record
12:03She has not made any phone calls
12:04Since Tuesday night
12:06Okay
12:06No data has been used
12:08Because I had her phone line transferred to a new device
12:11So I could try to track her stuff
12:13And someone has been resetting her passwords
12:16You know, it's not her
12:17We know it's not her
12:18Just then, while the family stood in the lot
12:21Jazzy seemed to emerge
12:23A racy photo popped up on her Facebook account
12:27That's when I got scared
12:29You saw that post
12:30I did
12:31I felt like
12:32That's someone that
12:35Wants to humiliate her
12:37That's not something she would put out there
12:40Of her in lingerie
12:41On social media
12:43What can we do?
12:45At this point
12:46I mean, I'm not saying
12:49It's not weird circumstances
12:50Because that definitely is
12:51I can get her listed as missing
12:53Jazzy's mom wanted more
12:56She asked them to pull any security footage
12:59From that parking lot
13:00See if she actually drove this car here
13:02I know the courtesy officer that does work here
13:04But as far as this time of night
13:06I don't imagine I'd be able to get anything
13:09Until tomorrow
13:10Can we try?
13:11As Jazzy's family waited on that security footage
13:15Her mom remembered that long call Jazzy made
13:19The day Granny died
13:20When she didn't recognize the number
13:23She had called Jackie
13:25Who was helping from home
13:26So on the phone with me
13:28I mean, she pulled up her Verizon
13:29And started scrolling through
13:31And she said the last person she was on the phone with
13:34It's this number
13:35Jackie got right to work
13:38While still on the phone with Jazzy's mom
13:40She ran the number through one of her mobile payment apps
13:44And I put it in Cash App
13:46And I said, Jason Chen
13:48Do you know that person?
13:51She said, yes
13:52And she hung up on me
13:53Katrina knew Jazzy had been casually seeing a guy named Jason Chen
13:59For a few months
14:00Maybe he could help find her
14:02So there, right in front of police
14:05Katrina called him
14:07No one has seen or heard from her since Tuesday night
14:09What would he have to say?
14:12Jasmine Pace's parents were busy tracking her digital footprint
14:28Trying to determine her movements since they last saw her
14:31They learned she'd had a phone call with Jason Chen
14:35A guy she'd met on a dating app
14:38The two had been casually dating for a few months
14:41And had gone on a trip to Chicago together
14:43Now, Jazzy's mom was on the phone with him
14:48And you seen, last time you seen her was Saturday?
14:52I think I talked to her
14:53The last time we talked to her
14:55Jason told Katrina he hadn't spoken to Jazzy since that Monday
15:00But she knew that wasn't true
15:02And you haven't talked to her since then?
15:04Hang on one second
15:05Hang on one second, Jason
15:06I just muted him
15:07He just lied
15:09He talked to her for 71 minutes
15:11Tuesday afternoon
15:12Okay
15:13He would remember that
15:15Jazzy's mom pressed him
15:17Hey, Jason
15:18I just called off her call log
15:20And I have it on here where she talked to you for 71 minutes
15:24Tuesday afternoon
15:26While her granny was in the hospital
15:28Jason said he did remember talking to Jazzy that day
15:33He'd simply forgotten
15:34For police, it wasn't much to go on
15:37I can document that
15:39But as far as putting him as a suspect
15:42We don't know
15:43Okay, I'm just letting you
15:44Please document it
15:45Katrina pushed them to do more
15:48Could we possibly go to a local
15:50Business that we have to pass
15:55To get these apartments and ask them to pull up footage
15:58So we can see if she's driving her car
16:00But they're not just going to pull it up for you
16:01I understand that
16:03But I can't just not
16:06I understand
16:08I'm just
16:09I'm
16:10Trying to explain to you
16:12The extent of what I can do
16:14I think that every mom
16:16Every parent
16:17Can really relate to Katrina in this moment
16:19I know I did
16:20In this body camera video
16:22You can see her desperation
16:24Let's try this
16:25Let's do this
16:26Let's check this video
16:27And that's really what any parent would do
16:29When they think their child is in danger
16:31I can feel her frustration
16:33Realizing there was only so much police could do in that moment
16:37My heart truly went out to her
16:39Eventually, the officers left
16:43If police wouldn't follow the leads
16:45The family would
16:47When you're desperate
16:48I think that's what you do
16:50You just don't stop moving
16:52It's like
16:53You're trying to lean into anything you can
16:55That you think is going to
16:56Bring you some kind of answer
16:58They went to the address they had for Jason
17:02But all they found was an abandoned house
17:06Frustrated
17:07Jazzy's mom went back through Jazzy's texts from that night
17:11And suddenly Katrina realizes
17:14She has a text on her phone
17:16She sees the pin drop
17:18And realizes
17:19Oh
17:21She sent a message
17:22Yes
17:23At 2.18am
17:25On the night she disappeared
17:27Jazzy had sent her mother a pin
17:30With her location on it
17:32Katrina was grieving Granny's passing
17:34And never saw it
17:36How shocking was that for her?
17:39It was scary
17:41I think that that's when I think fear really set in
17:47You could tell immediately that a message like that was a cry for help
17:50Yes
17:51No other explanation?
17:53I mean there was no for 3 o'clock in the morning or 2 o'clock whatever time it was
17:57That pin led them to yet another apartment complex
18:02The family made their way into the building
18:05Just started knocking on every single door
18:07What are people telling you?
18:09At first they said no we haven't seen that girl
18:11No we haven't seen that girl
18:13And we almost gave up on knocking on the doors
18:16Because we were coming to dead ends
18:17So you're just trying to narrow down which floor, which apartment
18:21Yes
18:22And then finally we realized that her pin drop had coordinates to it
18:26So then we would walk near every door
18:30And down the hallway just brushing up against the side of the wall
18:33Trying to get as close to the coordinates as we possibly could
18:35Finally they got the perfect hit
18:39Apartment 210
18:40You knock on the door?
18:43Yes
18:43What happens?
18:44Nobody answers
18:45So they knocked on the next door
18:48Apartment 212
18:50A couple answered
18:51The family asked if they'd seen anything
18:54Seen?
18:56No, the couple said
18:57But they had heard something
19:00He said
19:01I heard a scream that was so startling
19:04That I wrote the time down
19:06So he went and got the paper
19:08And
19:08I want to say it was in
19:11Three to four minutes
19:13Of that pin drop
19:15That he heard that scream
19:17Mm-hmm
19:18The neighbors clocked that scream
19:21At 215 a.m
19:22Just three minutes
19:24Before Jazzy dropped that pin
19:26They said it sounded like it came from next door
19:30Apartment 210
19:32Are you thinking
19:33Jasmine could still be inside?
19:35Yes
19:36She could need help
19:36Yes
19:37Jazzy's mom was fearless
19:40Maybe even a little reckless
19:43She went down and got her credit card
19:45Out of her car
19:46And
19:47They got in
19:48They popped the lock
19:50With the credit card
19:51The family slowly made their way
19:54Into the small one-bedroom apartment
19:56Right away
19:58Something caught Katrina's eye
20:00They had found
20:01My sister's to go bag
20:03Like a night bag
20:05That she takes
20:06To go and stay places
20:07As you guys continue
20:08Looking around the apartment
20:09What else did you see?
20:10In the desk drawer
20:11They found my sister's credit cards
20:12And her driver's lessons
20:14All stacked up neatly in a pile
20:16Also on the desk
20:17A notebook
20:19They opened it
20:20And saw a name
20:21Jason Chen
20:23And then we
20:24Proceeded to call the police
20:25For the second time that night
20:28Police met the family
20:29The officer told them
20:31An investigator
20:32Had already been assigned to the case
20:35So I talked with
20:36The investigator
20:38That was news to the family
20:40Who said
20:41They'd not been contacted
20:43By anyone
20:44As of right now
20:45There's nothing more
20:47That we can do
20:48To try to figure out
20:49All the details
20:50Yeah
20:50We've got the phone numbers
20:53We found out
20:54You don't let me speak
20:56Yeah
20:56So there's nothing more
20:58That we can do
20:58Right this second
20:59To figure out
21:01Where she's at
21:02Now if you have
21:03Phone numbers
21:04Or other information
21:05I can put it in the report
21:07And then I can forward that
21:09Along to the investigator
21:10But she's the one
21:12That has made the call
21:12That she's not responding
21:14Out here tonight
21:15The police issued a warning
21:17Do not go back
21:19Into the apartment
21:20Thanks for finding this
21:21But don't do it again
21:21Yes let us take it from here
21:23We had no confidence
21:25Whatsoever
21:26In the police
21:27Because up to this point
21:29It was like
21:30We can't be
21:30It's a holiday weekend
21:31How'd you get my number?
21:33She's fine
21:34She's posting on social media
21:36So at this point
21:38You're like
21:38It's up to us
21:39Absolutely
21:40Did your family come back?
21:42Absolutely
21:42Because what have you guys
21:43Done for us this far?
21:45Anything we thought
21:46Could be a clue
21:47To help us find her
21:49We were chasing that
21:51Jasmine Pace's loved ones
22:02Had done all they could
22:04And maybe more than they should
22:07To find her
22:08They'd broken into an apartment
22:10Then defied police instructions
22:13And gone in again
22:15Jazzy's family told me
22:17They had no hesitation
22:19About breaking into that apartment
22:20That they'd do it again
22:22If it meant possibly saving her
22:24Rather than sitting back
22:25And waiting for police to step up
22:27They started doing their own digging
22:29But here at Dateline
22:31We've seen cases
22:32Where important evidence
22:33Was thrown out
22:34Because it wasn't gathered properly
22:36And that's what Jazzy's family
22:38Was risking
22:39By going into that apartment
22:40Very anxious
22:42Because even though you know
22:44That you're in the right direction
22:45You're terrified
22:46Of what you're about to find
22:47You have no idea
22:49What you're going to find
22:50And you don't want to find
22:51Certain things
22:52They didn't find anything new
22:54But they were convinced
22:56Jazzy had been there
22:58What's more
22:59They were sure
23:00Jason Chen
23:01The guy Jazzy had been seeing
23:03Lived in the apartment
23:05His name was on the notebook
23:06And a neighbor confirmed it
23:08Jason was the son
23:10Of Chinese immigrants
23:11Who owned a restaurant
23:13The family lived
23:1430 minutes outside of Nashville
23:16But Jason moved to attend
23:18The University of Tennessee
23:19Chattanooga
23:20Where he majored
23:21In computer science
23:22That's where Ryan Barrett
23:25Met him
23:25In the summer of 2020
23:27Initially we were
23:28The first two people
23:29At the dorm
23:30So we spent about
23:31The first three or four days
23:32Just us together
23:33Really just getting
23:34To know each other
23:34Just figuring out
23:35General interests
23:36That we both like
23:37You know
23:37Playing video games
23:38Ryan says he and Jason
23:40Became good friends
23:42That he was fun to be around
23:43What was his demeanor like
23:45More quiet guy
23:46But he was pretty funny
23:47He'd always kind of come in
23:48With those you know
23:49Little jabs at everybody
23:50The two got along so well
23:52They became roommates
23:54And even landed jobs
23:56At the same place
23:57A soap company
23:58Summertime was great
24:00I mean we were going
24:01We spent 4th of July together
24:02At the park downtown
24:04Now Jazzy's family
24:07Was convinced
24:08Jason had something to do
24:10With her disappearance
24:10They took everything
24:12They'd gathered
24:13That could be used
24:14As evidence
24:15Jazzy's driver's license
24:16And credit card
24:17The cell phones
24:18And a tablet
24:19And gave it to the police
24:21And they didn't stop there
24:23They had their family lawyer
24:25Reach out to the
24:26District Attorney General
24:27Asking for help
24:29I received a phone call
24:30From my supervisor
24:31He called and said
24:32That we were going to come in
24:32And assist our missing persons
24:34Unit with the
24:36Jasmine Pace
24:37Missing persons investigation
24:39Detective Zach Crawford
24:41Headed to the apartment
24:43When you got in there
24:44How did you find the apartment
24:45Was it clean
24:46Was it messy
24:47I would say that it was
24:48A clean apartment
24:49It appeared that things
24:50May have been slightly
24:51Out of place
24:52In terms of where
24:53They were located
24:54And you could smell
24:55A little bit of a
24:56Cleaning product
24:57Inside of the apartment
24:58It smelled like it had
25:00Possibly been
25:01Recently cleaned
25:01Correct
25:02Considering everything
25:03That you know
25:05Up until this point
25:05When you smell
25:06Something like that
25:07Does that
25:08Raise your antenna
25:09Do you pay attention to that
25:10Yes
25:10It's something that is notated
25:12Along with smelling it
25:14You're also looking for
25:15Potential sheen on the floor
25:16To see if a
25:17If this was a crime scene location
25:19If anything had been altered
25:21In terms of cleaned up
25:22Wiped or anything like that
25:23Then
25:25He noticed something
25:27Just on the right of the futon
25:28On the floor
25:29On the hardwoods
25:30I saw what appeared to be
25:31Blood transfer
25:32In the form of a
25:33Hill print
25:33On the floor
25:34Blood transfer on the floor
25:35When you say blood transfer
25:37You mean like
25:37A bloody footprint
25:39Essentially a bloody footprint
25:40So the crime scene unit
25:41Comes in
25:42What do they do
25:43They first document the scene
25:44By photographs and video
25:46We asked for certain items
25:48To be collected
25:48That we observed
25:49In our walkthrough
25:50I also asked for
25:52Blue Star Reagent
25:53To be applied to that scene
25:54Blue Star Reagent
25:55Is a forensic tool
25:56That will show the presence
25:59Of wiped
25:59Cleaned
26:00Or invisible blood
26:02To the naked eye
26:03That could give further details
26:04Of how much blood
26:06We are dealing with
26:07What do they find
26:07So we requested
26:09During the application
26:11Of the Blue Star
26:11To be present
26:12Upon first spray
26:13It illuminated
26:15Essentially a third
26:16Of the living room area
26:18What did this show
26:18It showed an extremely
26:20Large amount of volume
26:22Of blood
26:22The largest that I had seen
26:23To that point
26:24In terms of Blue Star
26:25Reaction in my career
26:26I vividly remember
26:27Looking at Sergeant Emery
26:28And Detective Siege
26:29And we all said
26:30We have homicide
26:31I got a call at work
26:36From Katrina
26:36Hey get here
26:37To the police station now
26:39They're calling us in
26:40They have an update
26:42So we rushed there
26:43And they told us
26:46Seeing what we believe
26:47To be the crime scene
26:48There's so much blood
26:50That was lost
26:51That it was not survivable
26:52So this is no longer
26:54A missing persons case
26:55This is a homicide
26:56So that's a strange thing
26:59Because I think
27:01In the back of your mind
27:02We still were like
27:04Well are you a hundred percent
27:06It was her blood
27:07You know maybe
27:09She did somehow survive it
27:11You're telling me she's gone
27:12But we don't have her
27:15You still had hope
27:16At this point
27:16I think maybe
27:20We wanted to cling to that
27:21I mean we all accepted
27:23What they were telling us
27:24Yes we know that this
27:26Person you loved
27:28Died
27:29And we know it was
27:31Pretty brutal
27:31But we don't really know
27:33What happened after that
27:34It would now be
27:36Detective Crawford's job
27:38To find out
27:40I mean is your next step
27:41Find Jason Chen
27:43Yes
27:54Detectives searching
27:56For missing Jasmine Pace
27:57Found so much blood evidence
27:59They knew they had a homicide
28:02On their hands
28:03What they didn't have
28:04Was a body
28:05Or a suspect in custody
28:08It was now their mission
28:10To find both
28:11There's multiple avenues
28:13That are happening
28:14Evidence that we're finding
28:15At the crime scene location
28:16Is providing further follow up
28:18We also have
28:18Search warrants being conducted
28:20On the phone records
28:21Of Jason Chen
28:21They homed in on the day
28:23After Jasmine disappeared
28:25Jason's phone records
28:27Revealed he went to
28:28Walgreens and Walmart
28:30And security footage
28:31Showed someone
28:32Resembling Jason
28:34Buying cleaning supplies
28:36He was wearing a
28:37Very identifiable hat
28:39It was a red and white hat
28:40Called anything goes
28:41Once Jason Chen
28:43Left his apartment
28:44On November 23rd
28:45He never went back
28:46Detectives continued
28:48To track his phone
28:50Ultimately where did you find
28:51Jason Chen
28:52We ended up locating him
28:53In Nolensville Tennessee
28:54At his parents address
28:56So he comes down
28:57And what happens
28:57He was wearing items
28:58Of clothing
28:59That were consistent
29:00With what we observed
29:01Him wearing
29:02During different stages
29:04Of the investigation
29:04What does that tell you
29:05It gives us further details
29:07Of confirming
29:08That it's Jason Chen
29:10In the video footage
29:11We see
29:11So to be clear
29:12When you found him
29:13At his parents house
29:14He was wearing the same hat
29:15That he was wearing
29:16When he went to go buy
29:18Those cleaning supplies
29:18Correct
29:19Was that surprising
29:21To you
29:22We were
29:23More excited
29:24That he was wearing it
29:25So we didn't have
29:25To search for it
29:26Police arrested
29:28Jason Chen
29:29And charged him
29:30With first degree
29:31Premeditated murder
29:32But
29:33We attempted
29:34An interview
29:35With Jason
29:36At the Nolensville
29:37Police Department
29:38And he invoked
29:39His right to counsel
29:39So we were unable
29:40To get an interview
29:41With him that night
29:42Jason refused
29:43To tell investigators
29:45Anything
29:46As news of his arrest
29:48Spread across Chattanooga
29:49One person listened
29:51With particular interest
29:53His former roommate
29:54Ryan Barrett
29:55How unbelievable was it
29:57That your former roommate
29:59Was wanted for murder?
30:01Insane
30:01I just
30:03He had done a lot
30:04Of crazy things to me
30:05But murder was
30:07Not what I was expecting
30:08Ryan and Jason
30:10Had their own
30:11Strange falling out
30:13A few months
30:14Before Jazzy
30:14Disappeared
30:15Ryan's online
30:17Accounts were hacked
30:18He suspected
30:19Jason was behind it
30:21Since he was the only one
30:22Who had easy access
30:23To Ryan's phone
30:25Nearly all of my
30:26Venmo accounts
30:28Any social media accounts
30:29Were all locked out of
30:30Same with my personal email
30:32He even got fired
30:34From his job
30:35He says
30:36After some messages
30:37And social media posts
30:38From his account
30:40Saying what?
30:41Just like very aggressive
30:42Messages to managers
30:44That I would have never sent
30:46Ryan says
30:47He doesn't know
30:48Why Jason would do that to him
30:50But he'd had enough
30:52And moved out
30:53When I went back
30:54To grab my last few items
30:55It turned out
30:57Jason had disengaged
30:58The lock
30:59Manually reset it
31:00To where my code
31:01Wouldn't let me
31:01Into the apartment
31:02So you couldn't get
31:03The last of your things
31:04Couldn't get the last
31:04Of my things
31:05I spent probably about
31:06An hour banging on the door
31:08Ryan says
31:09They never spoke again
31:10The day after Jason's arrest
31:12Jasmine's family
31:14Was on edge
31:15Desperate for the one thing
31:17Still missing
31:18Her body
31:19Talk to me about that process
31:21It was painful
31:23You know
31:25It was really painful
31:27We all
31:28Stayed together
31:30And just
31:31Waited
31:32But by the second day
31:35I was like
31:35If they don't find her today
31:37I'm
31:37I'm going looking
31:40Like we had come up
31:41With a game plan
31:42To kind of just
31:43Look on our own
31:44Because we needed that
31:45Yeah
31:46Closure
31:47We needed that piece
31:48Of
31:49Of
31:50Putting her to rest
31:52Detectives continued
31:54To search for clues
31:55As to where Jazzy's
31:56Body might be
31:57Location data
31:59From November 23rd
32:00Put Jason on the banks
32:02Of the Tennessee River
32:03On December 1st
32:052022
32:06They searched the area
32:08And found her
32:09If there was anywhere
32:11That she had to be
32:13For
32:14That many days
32:16She loved it there
32:18That was a special place
32:21To her
32:21She told him
32:22That he should go
32:24And
32:24See it
32:25Before the leaves fall
32:26So she had told him
32:28About that place
32:29She did
32:30And that's
32:31Where he ultimately
32:32Chose to dump her body
32:33Yes
32:34When you all heard
32:36That
32:36Detail
32:37It just
32:40Turned my stomach
32:41I mean
32:43It's sick
32:43It's sick
32:44Jasmine
32:46Jasmine
32:46Had been
32:47Stuffed in a suitcase
32:48She was handcuffed
32:50And it got worse
32:52This was not
32:53Something that was quick
32:54It was something
32:55That was gruesome
32:55It was violent
32:5760 stab wounds
32:59In all
33:00As the family grieved
33:03The man accused
33:04Of killing Jasmine Pace
33:05Sat behind bars
33:07Thanks in large part
33:09Prosecutors said
33:10To her family
33:11How crucial
33:12Was her family's
33:14Involvement
33:14In all of this
33:15Extremely
33:16Hamilton County
33:18District Attorney General
33:19Cody Womp
33:20I don't know how
33:22The police department
33:23Would have ended up
33:24Getting a search warrant
33:25Had it not been
33:25For her family
33:26Crucial?
33:29Absolutely
33:29But it was also
33:31A ticking time bomb
33:33Jason Chen's attorney
33:34Josh Weiss
33:35Said the entire crime scene
33:37Was compromised
33:38The moment Jazzy's family
33:40Stepped inside
33:41This isn't one of your
33:43Run-of-the-mill cases
33:45Usually
33:46Police officers
33:47Get a search warrant
33:48In this case
33:50Jasmine Pace's parents
33:52Illegally broke into
33:54Jason Chen's apartment
33:55And searched that apartment
33:57Police warned Jazzy's family
33:59About it that night
34:00We legally
34:01Can't investigate
34:02Anything in there
34:03That you found
34:04Because it wasn't
34:06Found legally
34:08That's not my role
34:10That's the state of Tennessee
34:12That's just case law
34:14So that was torture
34:15Just feeling like
34:16Did we make a mistake?
34:19It was
34:20A constant
34:21Just pit in your stomach
34:23Of
34:23There were times
34:26Katrina would call me
34:27And just say
34:27He's not going to
34:30Get away with this
34:30Right
34:31Two years
34:43After Jasmine Pace
34:44Was killed
34:45Her family
34:46Gathered in a courtroom
34:47To see
34:48Jason Chen
34:49Stand trial
34:50For her murder
34:51Jason's parents
34:52And brother
34:53Were there too
34:54What was it like
34:55For you
34:56To be in there
34:56To be in that courtroom
34:57And be in the same courtroom
34:59With Jason Chen
34:59I think I'm more so
35:01Just numb to everything
35:02That at first
35:04You feel just
35:05So much anger
35:06By now
35:07The judge had ruled
35:08To allow in evidence
35:10From Jason's apartment
35:11Armed with that
35:13Prosecutors laid out
35:14Their theory
35:15Of what happened
35:16That night
35:16The couple fought
35:18And Jason launched
35:19A vicious
35:20Drawn out attack
35:21This wasn't
35:22Heat of the moment
35:23They said
35:24It was premeditated murder
35:26Prosecutor
35:27Paul Moyle
35:28What would you identify
35:29As the challenges
35:30In this case
35:31Anytime you have
35:32A first degree murder case
35:33The challenge
35:34Is premeditation
35:35How do you show
35:37That there was
35:39An opportunity
35:40To reflect on
35:42Your conduct
35:44Before committing
35:45The murder
35:46They began
35:48By hammering home
35:49The brutality
35:50Of the crime
35:51This is the suitcase
35:53In which
35:55Jason Chen
35:57Stuffed
36:00The 98 pound body
36:01Of Jasmine
36:03You know
36:04He didn't just
36:05Stab her 60 times
36:06He then put her body
36:08In trash bags
36:09He then put her body
36:10In a suitcase
36:11The first witness
36:13Up for the prosecution
36:15Jasmine's mom
36:16Katrina
36:17Were you concerned
36:18At that point
36:19About the police
36:20Investigation
36:21I wasn't thinking
36:23About a police investigation
36:25I was just
36:26Trying to find her
36:28I was
36:28Insangely scared
36:33Prosecutors knew
36:35The stakes
36:35If they couldn't prove
36:37Jason meant to kill Jasmine
36:38The jury could drop it
36:40To second degree murder
36:41Or even
36:42Voluntary manslaughter
36:44All of it
36:45All of it
36:45Was on the table
36:46This was prolonged
36:49To some extent
36:50We know that she was
36:52In his apartment
36:52Until he leaves
36:54With the suitcase
36:54To go drop her body
36:56By the river
36:57After that
36:59Prosecutors said
37:00Jason abandoned
37:01Jazzy's car
37:02In that parking lot
37:03Where her family
37:04Found it
37:05Jason had pleaded
37:07Not guilty
37:08To premeditated murder
37:09So what his attorney
37:11Joshua Weiss
37:12Said
37:12Stunned everyone
37:14Jason Chen
37:16Is guilty
37:17But he's not guilty
37:20Of the crime
37:21That he's charged
37:21It's certainly not often
37:23That you hear
37:24A criminal defense attorney
37:25Say that
37:26His client's guilty
37:27I wanted to get
37:28The jury's attention
37:29From the beginning
37:30I said exactly
37:31I'm not here
37:32To waste your time
37:33Jason Chen
37:34Is guilty
37:35Of killing
37:36Jasmine Pace
37:37But not
37:38To the degree
37:40The state is saying
37:41Weiss said
37:43Jason did kill Jazzy
37:45But it wasn't
37:46Premeditated
37:47As prosecutors argued
37:49Instead
37:50He said
37:50The evening began
37:52With the couple
37:53Hanging out
37:54And drinking wine
37:55But then
37:56Jasmine goes back
37:58Into the kitchen
37:59To get another bottle
38:00And there on the counter
38:02Is Jason's cell phone
38:04Ding ding
38:05Ding ding
38:06That familiar
38:08Tinder ding
38:09Jasmine looked at his phone
38:10And saw all these messages
38:13With other girls
38:15And it sent her in anger
38:16Into a rage
38:17And they started yelling
38:18And biting
38:19Jasmine attacked Jason
38:21With an empty wine bottle
38:23Jason had no choice
38:26His attorney argued
38:27He acted in self-defense
38:29Stabbing Jazzy
38:31In a fight
38:31He didn't start
38:33This is a voluntary
38:34Manslaughter case
38:35Prosecutors
38:37Completely dismissed
38:38The self-defense theory
38:40And even brought in
38:41A forensic tech expert
38:42Who testified
38:43That Jason
38:44Was not on Tinder
38:45At the time Jazzy
38:46Was killed
38:47In fact
38:48The only time
38:50He was on the dating app
38:51They said
38:52Was the next morning
38:53He's on social media
38:55On Tinder
38:56Hitting on girls
38:58And Jasmine is dead
39:00In his apartment
39:00Which really says
39:02Everything you need to know
39:03When it came time
39:05To cross-examine
39:06Jasmine's mother
39:07Weiss tried to thread
39:08A very small needle
39:10Showing sympathy
39:11While still questioning
39:13The evidence
39:14You said you would do anything
39:16To find your daughter
39:16Wouldn't you?
39:18Of course
39:19Okay
39:19But you would break
39:23Into an apartment
39:24To find my daughter?
39:26Yes
39:27Both sides rested
39:29Now
39:30The case was in
39:32The jury's hands
39:33I tried to remain
39:34Very objective
39:35Sarah Reed
39:37Was juror number 11
39:38There was no question
39:40That Jason killed Jazzy
39:41The issue on the table
39:43Was premeditation
39:44Sarah says
39:46She was swayed
39:47By what
39:47Prosecutor Moyle said
39:49Not only was it
39:5060 stab wounds
39:51There was 120 choices
39:52He made
39:53In and out
39:54That
39:55That
39:56At any point
39:57He could have stopped
39:58It didn't take long
40:00For the verdict
40:01To come in
40:02We the jury
40:02Find the defendant
40:03Jason Chen
40:04Guilty
40:05Of first degree
40:05Premeditated murder
40:06Let's talk about
40:09How quickly
40:10They came back
40:10I mean we're talking
40:12Less than an hour
40:13Yeah
40:14Surprising?
40:15I assumed
40:16That they were going
40:17To find Jason guilty
40:18But that it might be
40:19Over a period
40:20Of hours or days
40:21What we now know
40:22Is that we had done
40:23Our job
40:24And in many ways
40:25Jazzy's family
40:26Had done their job
40:27They had taken
40:28A big risk
40:30Collecting evidence
40:31That the court
40:31Could have thrown out
40:33Instead
40:33It helped prosecutors
40:35Convict the person
40:36Who killed Jazzy
40:37This is a story
40:39That will always
40:40Stick with me
40:41Because as a parent
40:42I recognize that feeling
40:44Of I will do anything
40:46For my child
40:47Tragically
40:48This determined family
40:49Couldn't save Jazzy's life
40:51But they did play
40:52A crucial role
40:53In bringing her killer
40:55To justice
40:55Now jurors had
40:58One more job to do
40:59Sentence Jason Chen
41:01Before deliberating
41:03They would hear
41:04From Jazzy's cousin
41:05Jackie
41:06Sixty stones
41:09Hard in this jar
41:10One to represent
41:11Every stab wound
41:12Found on my beautiful
41:13Innocent
41:1422 year old cousin
41:16Jurors had two choices
41:17The possibility
41:19Of parole
41:19In 51 years
41:21Or life in prison
41:22With no chance
41:23Of getting out
41:24That decision
41:25Came down to
41:26A conversation of
41:28Jasmine doesn't
41:30Get to come back
41:31In 51 years
41:32Jason Chen
41:34Is now serving
41:35A life sentence
41:36No possibility
41:37Of parole
41:38Jazzy's family
41:40Feels like
41:41They are serving
41:42A life sentence too
41:43A lifetime of missing
41:45The beautiful spirit
41:46They all loved so much
41:49The world needed to hear
41:51That they didn't
41:51Just need to look at her
41:53As a victim
41:53Of a crime
41:55They needed to look
41:57At her as like
41:58This most blessed person
42:00That would have just
42:02Shown random acts
42:03Of kindness
42:04To anybody
42:04What do you want
42:05People to know
42:07To remember
42:08About Jasmine
42:08She put everything
42:10She had
42:11Into being there
42:12For everybody else
42:14She always put herself last
42:17I mean she got joy
42:19Out of doing for others
42:21And being a loving
42:24Compassionate
42:25Kind
42:26Warm human being
42:27What do you want
42:29To be a victim
42:30To be a victim
42:30Of a victim
42:31To be a victim
