US Senate approves bill to end the shutdown, sending it to the House

The final Senate vote, 60-40, broke a grueling stalemate that lasted more than six weeks as Democrats demanded that Republicans negotiate with them to extend health care tax credits.

00:00The United States Senate has passed legislation to reopen government,
00:06bringing the longest shutdown in U.S. history closer to an end.
00:10A small group of Democrats ratified the deal despite searing criticism from within their party,
00:16breaking a stalemate that lasted more than six weeks amid demands that Republicans negotiate to extend health care tax credits.
00:23The 41-day shutdown could last a few more days as members of the House, which has been on recess since mid-September,
00:30return to Washington to vote on the legislation.
00:33We're not going to support a partisan Republican spending bill that continues to gut the health care of the American people.
00:43And we're going to continue the fight to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits.
00:48And if it doesn't happen this week, next week, this month, next month,
00:54then it's the fault of Donald Trump, House and Senate Republicans,
01:01who continue to make life more expensive for the American people.
01:07While the Democrats' demands were not met, the deal includes a promised vote in December on health care subsidies,
01:13but there's no guarantee of success.
01:15The Democrats who approved of the deal argued Republicans refused to budge on key demands
01:21and were left with no other option.
