00:30bison whose home on the range is in Europe and what's a mama bear to do when baby
00:36bear is just out of reach. Plus the animal most famous for peacocking shows us
00:42what's shaking. Then they're leaving the tropic island nest for life at sea. All
00:48this and much more right now on wild child.
01:13In the animal kingdom, each season brings with it vital changes, but none
01:18may be as important as those we see in the spring and fall. While the warmth of
01:23spring is the time for newborns to take their first step. Ball is the time to
01:28step up preparations for the coming winter. It's a careful balance, but an
01:33important one to a happy and healthy life in the wild.
01:39Between summer and winter falls, autumn puns aside, trees aren't the only living
01:46things that shed during the things that shed during the season.
01:51Many creatures molt their summer coats, then grow thicker ones ready for the cooler
01:56times ahead.
02:01As the autumn equinox approaches, days gradually get shorter, which sometimes prompts
02:07another change. Animals may adopt a different diet with many birds becoming herbivores for
02:13fall and winter. Thanks to an abundance of nuts, seeds and berries.
02:19Arriving in autumn means young animals are treated to milder temperatures, giving these
02:24little ones every reason to get out and about.
02:32Traditionally, a time of harvest, autumn is busy for creatures from all walks of life.
02:37A time of harvest, winter food stores, building up their winter food stores, with supplies plentiful.
02:46This is prime time for many animals to welcome new members into their families.
02:52These cattle are taste testing something off the usual grassy menu, a large helping of the
03:04season's finest sweet pumpkins.
03:08This squirrel also wants a slice of the action.
03:13This huge portion will probably keep it busy until winter.
03:17Closer to the equator, a young mountain gorilla is busy working up its appetite, climbing this natural
03:28jungle gym.
03:31After exercising its growing arms, this little one is finally ready to stop for a munch.
03:39All this furry gourmet wants this morning is a chewy strip of bark.
03:43Just as impressive are the climbing skills of American black bear cubs.
03:55Living in mountain forests, these bears come equipped with natural climbing gear, short, sharp, curved claws.
04:06Scrambling up high into the branches is not only a means of escape from any threats for these cubs.
04:12Up here, the agile babies can also look for snacks or a place to rest.
04:20This cub's gone above and beyond in its climbing lesson today.
04:25There's its proud mom supervising down on ground level.
04:29It looks just as talented when it switches into reverse.
04:34Unlike other tree climbing mammals, bears descend feet first.
04:38Climbing is hungry work as the days get shorter, it will soon be time to come down from their treehouse
04:46and start foraging on the ground like this mother and her cubs.
04:50They're scrambling through the undergrowth in search of berries, tasty roots and insects.
04:56Black bears also don't mind fish or carry on on their menu.
05:00These cubs will stay with their mom until they're about a year and a half old.
05:14Young cubs love nothing better than a good wrestle.
05:18Here comes another one to join in the fun.
05:22This trio really knows how to burn off energy.
05:24Some birds like to study the change of season from tree level,
05:31while others like to spread their wings and take a scenic flight.
05:38What better way to enjoy the warm colors of autumn?
05:43Spectacular.
05:44After a busy summer, a truly gentle baby animal is really coming into its own.
06:03The beautiful European bison was nearly driven to extinction.
06:07But thanks to conservation efforts, they're slowly but surely getting back on track.
06:21All baby animals are special, but these are even more so.
06:28Every new calf means a more hopeful future for these bison.
06:32After a nine-month wait, cows welcome their babies.
06:43As the largest surviving land mammal in Europe, it's no surprise that they're very big bundles of joy.
06:51Newborns can weigh as much as 70 pounds.
06:54Less than an hour after their birth, these youngsters are up on all fours, thirsty for their first drink of milk.
07:09The mothers nurture them within the safety of the herd.
07:18When they're a month old, the babies begin to nibble on their grassy surroundings.
07:25It's at this tender age when they also start to pester their moms a bit.
07:33European bison are social animals that travel widely in herds and don't mind a good scratch together.
07:42In the wild, European bison can enjoy lives spanning up to 16 years.
07:48And knowing they're making their way back from the brink of extinction, the longer, the better.
07:58Coming up, everybody scramble.
08:01It's time for these little ones to try their sea legs.
08:05Plus, these adorable goslings prefer only the freshest greens.
08:09And an incredible glimpse of a brand new life in the North American wilderness.
08:15All this and much more on Wild Child.
08:19We'll be right back to The More You Know on NBC.
08:22We now return to The More You Know on NBC.
08:36If there's one thing that says autumn, it's falling leaves.
08:40Up on dry land, a tiny raccoon is having a quiet play in the leaf litter.
08:48While some older members of the family enjoy a round of rock and roll raccoon wrestling.
08:53When it comes to play time, proboscis monkeys are real high flyers.
09:05Autumn is all about leaf piles.
09:08And squirrels are all about scampering in them.
09:14Good seasonal fun.
09:16Let's make our way to the beach this afternoon to meet a standout marine reptile that spends part of autumn
09:28building very important nests in the sand.
09:32Say hello to the loggerhead turtle.
09:35Sea turtles are known as charismatic megafauna.
09:38They often represent important and even revered animals to humans.
09:43This female turtle has just laid, then buried, a clutch of about a hundred eggs.
09:51And that's it, as far as her parenting duties are concerned.
09:55Her main aim now is to make tracks for the water.
09:59She might be slow on land, but once she's back in her element, this lady will fly.
10:06It's a big effort, but she's finally made it.
10:10Bon voyage.
10:13A couple of months later, the hatchlings have dug their way to the surface.
10:22At this stage, they weigh less than a double-A battery.
10:28But instinct will guide these baby turtles right to the water.
10:32They're naturally drawn to light waves from the green and blue part of the spectrum bouncing off the ocean.
10:43Oops.
10:44Pothole.
10:45The beach is like a sandy highway, with lots of these little commuters crisscrossing the dunes, all trying to get to their salty destination.
10:55Some crabs have popped out of their holes to watch the procession.
11:01They play tag with their new friends.
11:05But these tiny loggerheads are on a mission.
11:12It's a flipper-powered marathon.
11:14Coming up, this peacock shows her true colors to her little pea hens.
11:26Then this forest feline may only be a kitten, but her catwalk is looking all grown up.
11:33And for these giants, hooves like snowshoes really come in handy when Wildchild returns.
11:40We'll be right back to The More You Know on NBC.
11:48We now return to The More You Know on NBC.
11:57Nature's newborns may be the headliner each spring, but no living thing benefits more from this time of year than the plant kingdom.
12:05The return of the sun means it's the plant's time to shine, covering the planet with lush colors, fresh scents, and for nature's humble herbivores, a bounty of food.
12:16Take a look.
12:23One of the most dangerous times in an animal's life is when they're first born.
12:29So many animals have a special look to help keep them safely out of sight.
12:35In the rugged Falkland Islands at the tip of South America, a gaggle of native upland geese are spending their afternoon foraging through the fresh spring grass.
12:57With these geese, telling the females and males apart is easy.
13:01The ganders have crisp white feathers, but the females, like many species of birds, sport more earthy tones to keep them discreetly disguised.
13:15The chick's fluffy down is toned down for the same reason.
13:18By the time they're 10 weeks old, the babies will have fledged and put on their true colors.
13:34In some species, the difference between those with flash and everyone else is unmistakable.
13:40These peafold chicks, for instance, are a world away from an adult male peacock.
13:52The females, or peahens, don't need to show off.
13:56The males, after all, have to do all the courting.
13:59With their long, impressive, iridescent trains, the peacocks are real attention-grabbers.
14:09These guys have to put on an eye-catching display to impress the single ladies.
14:16Otherwise, they're out of luck, family-wise.
14:20A single peacock will breed up to five peahens, so the reproductive stakes are high.
14:26Sheming seems to be instinctive.
14:32Successful pairings see eggs hatch after about a month.
14:37Hens and chicks nest on the ground, blending in with neutral colors.
14:47When they're about a month old, the babies start to grow their crests.
14:56This little guy looks like he's getting in early, working on his mating routine already.
15:12Young males don't achieve their full technicolor glory until they turn two.
15:19But still, practice makes perfect.
15:21Coming up, it's a wobbly new world for this little one, but it won't be little for long.
15:32Plus, there's a down-home reason these forest felines might seem familiar.
15:37And these three are betting on binocular vision to win the day.
15:42Find out more when Wildchild returns.
15:45We'll be right back to The More You Know on NBC.
15:53We now return to The More You Know on NBC.
16:07In a North American forest, these moose are out for an early stroll.
16:15Trudging through the snow is all in a day's work for moose, the largest member of the deer family.
16:24Their large hooves make natural snow boots, distributing their weight evenly
16:29and making plodding through the deep powder easier.
16:32But when spring arrives, it's time for a very special forest event.
16:45A moose calf has just been born.
16:49This little one can grow to be 6'7'' tall and weigh 1,300 pounds.
16:56After a quick clean from mom, its first challenge is to get up on all fours.
17:07It's a valiant first try.
17:11What an incredible sight.
17:13Some animal families are easier seen in human care.
17:25These young wildcats are out exploring.
17:28This exhibit is filled with lots of natural cat toys, like old leaves, twigs, and logs.
17:39The razor-sharp focus and incredible reflexes, normally associated with cats,
17:51start to develop during play sessions like this.
17:55The wildcats will eventually learn how to use their camouflage,
17:59walk softly, and become highly skilled in the art of the sneak attack.
18:06But all in good time.
18:10For now, these relatives of domestic cats seem perfectly content
18:15with a bit of kitten roughing tumble.
18:20Meanwhile, in a Japanese forest, this young owl trio is wisely honing their vision.
18:29One chick's looking at things from an upside-down angle.
18:39Owls can't move their eyes, so they have to move their heads and bodies
18:44to help triangulate their prey and change their point of view.
18:49So, on this tree branch, two's company, but three's a mesmerizing crowd.
18:55We're so happy you could join us on our journey to see some of our favorite animal families
19:02of the spring and fall.
19:04From learning how to walk to learning how to prepare for what lies ahead,
19:09Earth's adorable adolescents truly learn how to live in the wild during these seminal seasons.
