Senator Bernie Sanders lashed out at his fellow Democrats after the Senate voted to end the 40-day U.S. government shutdown — the longest in American history. Calling it a “bad night for working people,” Sanders accused party leaders of surrendering to Republican pressure by approving the bipartisan deal. The measure, which funds federal operations through January 30, reinstates furloughed workers and restores essential services, but Sanders warned it fails to address the deeper issues of inequality and corporate influence that fueled the shutdown standoff.

00:00And what the election showed is that the American people want us to stand up to Trumpism.
00:05This was a very, very bad vote.
00:09Tonight was not a good night.
00:11Tonight, eight Democrats voted with the Republicans to allow them to go forward on this continuing resolution.
00:18And to my mind, this was a very, very bad vote.
00:24What it does, first of all, is it raises health care premiums for over 20 million Americans by doubling,
00:34and in some cases tripling or quadrupling.
00:36People can't afford that when we are already paying the highest prices in the world for health care.
00:41Number two, it paves the way for 15 million people to be thrown off of Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act studies show
00:48that will mean that some 50,000 Americans will die every year unnecessarily.
00:53And all of that was done to give a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the 1%.
01:01As everybody knows, just on Tuesday, we had an election all over this country.
01:06And what the election showed is that the American people want us to stand up to Trumpism,
01:12to his war against working class people, to his authoritarianism.
01:16That is what the American people wanted.
01:18But tonight, that is not what happened.
01:22So we've got to go forward, do the best that we can to try to protect working class people,
01:27to make sure that the United States not only does not throw people off of health care,
01:33but ends the absurdity of being the only major country on earth that doesn't guarantee health care to all people.
01:39We have a lot of work to do.
01:42But to be honest with you, tonight was not a good night.
