Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer rallied Democrats as the US government shutdown deadline looms. Speaking out against Republicans, Schumer warned of a “crescendo” of healthcare concerns if funding talks fail, accusing the GOP of “plunging America into a shutdown.” Lawmakers are under pressure to reach a deal before federal funding expires, with millions of Americans at risk of disruptions to essential services and healthcare programs. Stay tuned for live updates and analysis on this high-stakes political standoff in Washington.
00:00I borrowed Thun's poster today, as many of you saw.
00:04This is what the House Republican Conference call.
00:07Lisa McLean, the head, walked members through polling and advised them not to make the message about health care.
00:16Because ours lose that argument.
00:18That's not me. That's one of the Republican leaders who's in charge of messaging.
00:22114% more for marketplace enrollees who currently will receive financial assistance.
00:31That's the Kaiser Foundation.
00:34It's devastating. Devastating to them.
00:36Before I get into my substance of remarks, I just heard something that Trump said.
00:41Here's what he said.
00:43We can do things during the shutdown that are irreversible and bad for them.
00:48And irreversible like cutting vast numbers of people out.
00:52Well, there it is.
00:54Trump admitted himself that he is using Americans as political pawns.
01:02He is admitting that he is doing the firing of people, if God forbid it happens.
01:09He's using Americans as pawns, as I said.
01:12Democrats do not want a shutdown.
01:14We stand ready to work with Republicans to find a bipartisan compromise and the ball's in their court.
01:21But when he says he will do things, he is taking ownership.
01:27He is taking ownership.
01:29It's just like in his first term when he said he will own the shutdown.
01:35That's just a point I wanted to make.
01:37Okay, now, we're 10 hours away from government funding expiring simply because the Republicans are not serious about keeping it open.
01:50Finally, after months of asking, months and mounting pressure, Leader Jeffries and I went to the White House yesterday to meet with the President and Republican leaders to find a way forward.
02:03And sitting in the room, it was very clear behind closed doors that the President hasn't fully grasped the magnitude of the disaster he's causing Americans.
02:14As costs continue to skyrocket for Americans, thanks to Trump's tariffs, economic policies, clean energy policies, and disastrous blunders, Americans are prepared to spend 114% more on their health insurance.
02:35That's right.
02:36That's right.
02:37That's right.
02:38That just came out.
02:39According to the Kaiser Family Foundation's analysis today, without ACA premium tax credits, premiums will double, more than double on average.
02:49And this not only affects those on ACA, it affects just about every American family with health insurance because it is, as has been documented, when they get the deep cuts on ACA and on Medicaid, they don't have as much money and they raise the costs on everybody else.
03:11So, virtually no American with health insurance is immune from these disastrous Trump cuts.
03:19And what are Republicans doing about this?
03:22Avoiding lying.
03:24This week, look at this poster.
03:28Here.
03:30Let's get it front and center.
03:32I borrowed Thune's poster today, as many of you saw.
03:36This is what the House Republican conference call.
03:40Lisa McClain, the head, walked members through polling and advised them not to make the message about health care because ours lose that argument.
03:51That's not me.
03:52That's one of the Republican leaders who's in charge of messaging.
03:59They're right.
04:01She's right.
04:02Their position is so callous and the damage is much greater than even people thought that it's very unpopular.
04:13So, when they're up against the brutal fact that Americans are to pay, take this one up, 114% more for marketplace enrollees who currently will receive financial assistance.
04:28That's the Kaiser Foundation.
04:31It's devastating.
04:32Devastating to them.
04:34And let me be clear, because they like to tell lies because they can't argue the merits.
04:41So, they make up things.
04:43They're saying undocumented people cannot and will not receive premium tax credits.
04:50They say that undocumented people are going to get these credits.
04:54That is absolutely false.
04:55That is one of the big lies they tell.
04:59So, they don't have to discuss the issues.
