00:00Hey, you're not in your bed, you're always on your bed.
00:08Yeah?
00:09I'm like, where'd she go?
00:10She's gone.
00:11What's going on?
00:13Hey, for scuba diving, this is the book that you have to read.
00:18And you just have to read as much of it as you can, but they specifically need the first
00:24three chapters read before the first day of class.
00:26Well, I recently found out that I got a hosting job for the Travel Channel, seeing the world's
00:31most amazing beaches, and I know one of the main things that's going to happen is it's
00:35going to be scuba diving.
00:36So I asked Holly and Kendra if they wanted to join me.
00:39It's a lot of weird SPG.
00:42A lot of it's termed, so you know all the different pieces.
00:45Exhaust valve.
00:47Isn't that on your car?
00:49Oh man, I know, right?
00:51K-Valve.
00:52The K-Valve, that must be your valve.
00:54Oh my God.
00:55Oh yeah, yeah.
00:56A lot of work.
00:57Getting scuba certified is like one of my dreams, and you know, it's something that I've
01:01always wanted to do.
01:02Something I never thought I would ever do.
01:03Alright, see you later.
01:04See ya.
01:06Good morning.
01:07Good morning.
01:08Hello.
01:09Hi.
01:10Today we have our scuba certification class with Dave Jensen of the Dive and Surf Shop.
01:17Dave's been diving since 1992, and he has a lot of experience, so we know we're learning
01:30from the best.
01:31Okay, so before we get started, how many of you did the homework, and what did you think
01:38of it?
01:39Holly, did you do the homework?
01:40Yeah, I thought it was, I mean, it was informative.
01:42I read the first three chapters, and I just felt like it was a lot of information, and I feel
01:49like it will be better when you're actually seeing it and doing it, then it makes it not
01:55so technical and difficult.
01:56Okay.
01:57And Kendra, how did the reading go for you?
01:58Good.
01:59How many chapters did you get through?
02:00I got three, two.
02:01I learned, uh...
02:02Kendra wasn't too into the textbook stuff.
02:03Oh, fuck.
02:04I forgot the name.
02:05I tried to read some of the chapters, but I tried to read some of the chapters, but I
02:08just got bored and I just scanned it.
02:09I learned hand signals.
02:10Okay.
02:11Give me some hand signals.
02:12What does that mean?
02:13That means, um, okay.
02:14You're okay?
02:15All right, what else?
02:16Yeah, and we're all right.
02:17Yeah.
02:18Yeah.
02:19And then, okay, we can do the homework.
02:21I need to get the homework.
02:22And then we can do the homework.
02:23I'm sorry.
02:24Yeah.
02:25So you're okay.
02:26I'm okay.
02:27I'm okay.
02:28All right.
02:29What else?
02:30And then, so technical and difficult.
02:31Okay.
02:32And Kendra, how did the reading go for you?
02:33Good.
02:34How many chapters did you get through?
02:35I got three too.
02:36I learned two.
02:37Alright, what else?
02:38Danger!
02:39Danger.
02:40And then...
02:41That's the universal one.
02:44What is this?
02:46Oh, good.
02:47Nope.
02:48Up!
02:49We're going to go up?
02:50Oh yeah, and then...
02:51Wait.
02:52Go down?
02:53Down, and then...
02:54Which way?
02:55Which way?
02:56Yeah, that's easy.
02:57Good, you're way ahead of the game.
02:58Yep, I am.
02:59Yeah, I'm doing really good at the scuba stuff.
03:00I might be book smart after all.
03:02Scuba diving means what?
03:05Scuba stands for Submerged Controlled Underwater Breathing Apparatus.
03:12Scuba stands for something?
03:14Just sounds like, you know, underwater stuff.
03:17I don't know.
03:18Scuba stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.
03:23Apparatus?
03:24What does apparatus mean?
03:26What the fuck?
03:27Four things we're going to start talking about.
03:29We're going to talk about buoyancy, comfortable descents,
03:32comfortable ass sense, and then breathing underwater.
03:35There was so much classroom material we had to learn before we could dive,
03:39but we decided to cram it all in in one day.
03:41What is decompression?
03:42You guys are going to wear a wake belt.
03:43Let's suck a little bit of that.
03:44I have a BCD, which is a buoyancy control.
03:46Water is much denser than air than a giant stripe.
03:48And we have half the volume.
03:49You're going to float in the ocean.
03:51So let me explain that a little bit.
03:53The third point is our maximum time is significantly greater in water than in air.
03:57I'm more of a visual, hands-on learner rather than, you know?
04:06Does it make sense?
04:07Clear as mud so far?
04:08Huh?
04:09You guys ready to jump in the pool?
04:11Yeah.
04:12All right.
04:14Look at all the stuff set out.
04:16Cool.
04:17Next, let's grab our regulator sets.
04:19And you're going to screw this in just finger tight.
04:22So now we're ready to turn on our air.
04:26Until you hear that hiss, then let go.
04:28So you can go ahead and put your wake belt on.
04:31I like my fish feet.
04:33Oh!
04:36My head's huge.
04:37Oh, my God.
04:38There was so much equipment that we had to frickin' learn how to use and put on us.
04:44Oh!
04:47Oh, here comes half.
04:49Huff.
04:50Huff, are you going to scuba?
04:51I'm going to watch a couple of my pals scuba.
04:55My three favorite ladies.
04:56Aw.
04:57I thought it was really cool that Huff came out to check on our progress.
05:00It's hard to get him away from, like, work and his bedroom and stuff.
05:03And I think he got a kick out of it because we looked really funny with all our gear on.
05:06You suppose you could wear this stuff to bed?
05:08Looks like a lot of possibilities here.
05:11Let's drop down.
05:12In and out.
05:13It's so funny to see everybody with their scuba masks on underwater because everybody gets, like, really bug-eyed and they look really scared.
05:21And you'll be able to.
05:22Holly, you made me laugh so hard.
05:25Why was I doing that?
05:26I don't know.
05:27You just look.
05:28Your eyes look so big.
05:29Everyone just does.
05:30Okay, so I'm going to ask you to partially flood your mask.
05:35Oh, hell no.
05:36Flooding the mask is, like, the most evil task that we have to learn.
05:42Any questions?
05:43Okay, let's drop down.
05:45My most dreaded task in the whole scuba certification, and I think Bridget and Kendra feel the same
05:49way, is flooding the mask.
05:51Flooding the mask is just an emergency skill that you need to learn.
05:55Any time you go to smile or talk, you'll get water in your mask and you have to clear it.
06:00You have to take your mask and pull it away so that it floods with the sea water.
06:06And then tilt your head back and, like, try and blow all the water out with your nose.
06:11And we were all really struggling with it.
06:14Sometimes it takes several tries, and it's hard to breathe in at the same time without
06:19taking in water through your nose.
06:21So you're like, okay, what do I do?
06:24And it's hard.
06:25It feels like you're drowning.
06:27And you puke in your octopus.
06:30I was so nervous to do that.
06:33I was like, I can't do it.
06:34Someone's live.
06:35You know I was.
06:36I was like, no.
06:38So masks on, regs in your mouth.
06:41Let's nail down.
06:42There's a lot involved with getting scuba certified.
06:44You have to learn all the different skills.
06:46And then you have to be able to do it in open water.
06:49Now we're going to swim underwater over to the deep end.
06:53I am so ready to do some underwater exploring of the mansion pool.
06:58God only knows what we're going to find down there.
07:01Very good.
07:02The pool looked really cool from the underwater view.
07:07All the rocks and tunnels.
07:09And we also found some leftover things from parties.
07:12We found earrings, and we found little pins, needles, and we found cups.
07:19Oh my God.
07:20Oh, that was easy.
07:21All right, good job.
07:23Scuba diving in the mansion pool was educational and fun, but I'm definitely
07:30ready to get out to the ocean.
07:32Can't wait to go to the ocean.
07:33Our next stop is the ocean.
07:35Woo!
07:36Fun!
07:37Thank you so much.
07:38You're welcome.
07:47I have never been to Catalina before, and I couldn't wait to get there.
07:50And it's like its own little island.
07:52It's only 45 minutes away, and I mean, what a good little getaway, you know?
07:57Good morning, folks.
07:58Welcome aboard the Super Express.
08:00For your safety, life jackets are located all the way forward.
08:04Are you nervous at all?
08:05Nervous about what?
08:06Diving.
08:07I'm nervous about how cold it's going to be.
08:09I hope there are no hurricanes.
08:10Watch out for the bird poop.
08:25Uh-oh.
08:26Holy shit.
08:27Uh-oh.
08:28Literally, holy shit.
08:29Uh-oh.
08:30I know.
08:31I'm prepared.
08:33I had never been to Catalina before, and I'd always wanted to.
08:36So this was a great opportunity.
08:38Is this your first time on the island?
08:39Yeah.
08:40Right on.
08:41So there's the casino.
08:42Cool.
08:43And the world-famous green pier.
08:45The green one?
08:46The green one.
08:47The only pier that's green.
08:49It's the lookout cottage.
08:52Cart rentals.
08:53Catalina limo.
08:55That's right.
08:56It's your limo.
08:57There are very few cars allowed on Catalina Island, so for the most part, people get around
09:01on golf carts.
09:02The adventure begins.
09:06Look at that pimped out one.
09:08Hey.
09:09This is what we need to start driving around L.A. so we can save gas.
09:14I'm down.
09:15I think everybody should drive these around L.A.
09:17Yeah.
09:18That would be so much better.
09:19Catalina is so cute.
09:20It's very quaint.
09:21When you get there, it's just this little tiny town.
09:23There's a lot of activity going on.
09:25There's people going by in their golf carts.
09:27Lots of tourists walking around.
09:29The ocean is splashing.
09:31The seagulls are chirping.
09:33Like, it's just a whole beautiful seaside little village.
09:37Can't wait to explore.
09:46Oops.
09:47Yeah, I know.
09:48I'm so...
09:49His arms look like legs.
09:50It looks so weird.
09:51I'm ready.
09:52I'm done.
09:53I'm so...
09:54I'm so...
09:55It's like that.
09:56I'm so...
09:57I can't wait to see that.
09:58I'm so...
09:59I feel like it's the creature from the Black Lagoon.
10:00This thing is really chokoby.
10:01I feel like I've returned to the wound.
10:02It feels that way, huh?
10:03I feel like it's very cozy.
10:04It's cold in Catalina.
10:05We literally had to wear the hood, the whole wetsuit that we zip up, gloves, booties, snorkels,
10:21snorkels, all the tanks. I mean, all you saw skin-wise was this much of our face, and it
10:26was smooshed together. So this was us on our dive.
10:34Hang out on the rails, and the steps are really mossy and slick here.
10:40It's amazing how Holly just got done learning how to swim, and she's already in the ocean
10:45scuba diving. I mean, it's really cool.
10:51It's a lot different learning to scuba from the mansion pool to the ocean, because the
10:58mansion pool, you know there's no creepy critters going to come and get you, and the open water
11:03is just a little bit more scary and a lot deeper.
11:13I was a little bit nervous to do scuba diving. It's very intimidating to be 30 feet or more
11:20under the water. You can't shoot to the top or you'll hurt yourself, and you just panic
11:24because you start taking in water and you can't breathe. I just really had to take the
11:28time to relax myself and try not to panic, especially while I was under water.
11:34There's so many hand signals you use while scuba diving to communicate with your fellow divers,
11:50and we use them, but we also made up a lot of other ones, like this is doggy style, this
11:55is 69, this is like what you think it is.
12:01I basically forgot all the hand signals that he taught us. He was doing all these hand signals,
12:05and I'm like, I don't know what you're saying. Please, I don't, and I'm trying to tell him,
12:10like, please, tell me. So I just kind of came up with my own signals.
12:16Our first dive was a real adventure. I'm so glad we did it, and I think we made some real progress.
12:34Everyone made it back alive. That's always a good thing.
12:37That's a positive.
12:39All right, so good job on the skills.
12:41You guys see my hand signal down there? I was like, oh, I missed it.
12:47Oh, I peed. It warmed me up.
12:50Why don't you show us again what your hand signal was for?
12:53I peed.
13:03Somebody loosened his collar without informing me.
13:06Ladies, I'm being told by you that your twin puppies are here.
13:10Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I still want to go see them.
13:14Oh, my God. I'm picking mine first.
13:19Oh, my God. I hear them.
13:20Oh, my God.
13:21Oh, my God.
13:22Oh, my God.
13:24Oh, my God.
13:25Oh, my God.
13:26Oh, my God.
13:27They're cute little.
13:28This one.
13:29Oh, my God.
13:31Here's the other one.
13:33Okay, let me see.
13:34These are the cutest things.
13:35Twins for twin girls.
13:36Oh, hey there.
13:37Hi, honey.
13:38Look what we've got.
13:39Oh, ho.
13:40You want to hold one?
13:41Twins for the twins.
13:42Oh, my God.
13:43Oh, my God.
13:45Oh.
13:46And Gracious loves them, too.
13:48Gracious.
13:49Hey.
13:50Oh, real cuties.
13:53Well, the girls are waiting for us on the boat.
13:55Oh, yay.
13:56Good one.
13:57And we will go back and we will come back and play with the puppies afterward.
14:01Okay.
14:02We'll see you later.
14:03We'll see you out here in a minute.
14:04All right.
14:11What do you think, Kendra?
14:12What?
14:13Get wet and go deep.
14:14I started getting really nervous about the ocean dive as we got closer and closer to the boat,
14:18because I didn't think I was going to pass.
14:20Welcome aboard the disappearance, ladies.
14:22The disappearance?
14:23The disappearance, because we disappeared.
14:24Uh-oh.
14:25Let me introduce you to Bob Maestrel.
14:27He's the captain.
14:28Hi.
14:29Hi.
14:30I'm Holly.
14:31You're Captain Bob.
14:32I'm Kendra.
14:33All right.
14:34Captain Bob, yeah.
14:35Welcome to the boat here.
14:37Yay.
14:38All right.
14:39Go ahead and give us the briefings.
14:40Okay.
14:41If you want to go up and play Titanic on the front of the boat, do it now.
14:43Once we get started and the boat's moving, it weighs 100,000 pounds.
14:46And if you fell off, I couldn't stop it.
14:48Mm-hmm.
14:49And there's two great big Cuisinarts underneath there that'll just chew you up.
14:52Don't fall off the sides.
14:53Hopefully, if somebody will like you enough, they'll yell to him.
14:56He'll come back and pick you up.
14:57Uh-huh.
14:58Once we get underway, and we'll start getting in our wetsuits and everything.
15:09The skill we were supposed to work on first is called a C-set, and it's an emergency
15:14swimming ascent back to the top.
15:17Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent.
15:20That's what C-set stands for.
15:21We're going to do the C-set first, and we're going to drop back down.
15:23We're going to do the mask and then the fence of it.
15:25I don't want to do the flood mask.
15:28Look at the bright side.
15:29You get to do it.
15:30Ah.
15:31Yeah.
15:32Take a big step up.
15:33Mm-hmm.
15:34Big step.
15:35Good.
15:38And watch.
15:39You're good.
15:42Good?
15:43Uh-huh.
15:44Okay.
15:45All right, Kendra, you're up.
15:46We're going to do it earlier.
15:47That's going to make me real hot later.
15:48What did you eat?
15:49A burrito.
15:50A skillet.
15:51A burrito with hot sauce in it.
15:52I was having second thoughts about going out and doing the whole big ocean dive because
15:56it was just really choppy out there, and it was very, like, the boat was, like, swaying,
16:01and I was sick, and it's kind of just scary, sort of, you know?
16:08Straight back in.
16:13I was getting choked by the turtleneck.
16:16Good.
16:17Girls, do you feel like going down?
16:31No.
16:32That's okay.
16:33My waist belt doesn't feel, like, all the way on.
16:37So we swim out to the buoy, and Holly was having some technical difficulties with her
16:42mask and just really coughing out a lot of water, like, not looking so good.
16:51We are out in the water, and we're just like, whoo, whoo.
16:56Everything's all rocky and fucking, it was way too choppy.
17:00I'm going to put your hair back and put your back and just get on your mask.
17:04I feel set.
17:05Do you want to get out for a little bit?
17:07No, let's go get out for a little bit.
17:09Kendra was like, I'm nauseous.
17:10I'm going to puke.
17:11I'm going to puke.
17:12I'm going to puke.
17:13And so we decided, you know what?
17:14Let's just go back in, regroup, take a few minutes, and then see how we feel.
17:19I started worrying a lot because I was like, shit.
17:22We're not going to pass.
17:23I was just, like, thinking to myself, everybody's just about to quit and head home.
17:28We're coming back to the bunk.
17:29I think I'm going to puke.
17:31I think that wig goes off first.
17:33Oh, shit.
17:34I feel like puke is really bad.
17:36I feel good and everything, but I'm panicky about doing the mask.
17:46The mask feel?
17:47Every single time I breathed in, I had to do a mask clear.
17:50It's like, it got flooded, like, every time I was breathing.
17:53Mine too.
17:54I wish I could puke right now.
17:55Can I make myself puke?
17:56It's up to you.
17:57You need to.
17:58I'm going to do the Titanic and puke up it.
18:05Oh, wait.
18:06She's going to the bow.
18:07She's going to the bow.
18:20I feel better.
18:21I'm ready to scuba dive.
18:22Oh, my God.
18:23I feel so much better.
18:24Excuse me.
18:27What is that?
18:32What is that?
18:33Look at!
18:34Ah!
18:35Dolphins!
18:36It's a shark.
18:37What is that?
18:38Dolphins!
18:39Ah!
18:40Ah!
18:41Dolphins!
18:44You guys, it's a whale.
18:46So cute.
18:47Damn, I thought that was a dolphin.
18:49Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
18:52Wait.
18:53You look good.
18:54You look good.
18:55Wait.
18:56I'm ready to get certified.
18:57That's okay.
18:58I was a little worried for all of us.
18:59We all had difficulties the last day.
19:00I thought maybe none of us would get certified.
19:01So we went back out and I was a little bit nervous about some of the things that they were going to have us do.
19:06Like, we had to do a full mask flood, which really sucks.
