00:30...was a big thing. It was just a matter of escaping the isolation.
00:36She trusted everybody, and I was scared for her.
00:42When people go missing in Alaska, it can feel really hopeless.
00:46A vicious murder from thousands of miles away.
00:50I was praying to God, please be some form of good news. Please.
00:54When I found out about the Snapchat post, I was like, what the F is going on?
01:00I was born and raised in Anchorage.
01:20Anchorage is pretty desolate, right?
01:22The winters are pretty long and dark.
01:25I mean, the highway that connects from Alaska into the lower 48 is really long.
01:32If you don't stop for gas at the right times, you'll never get gas again.
01:36It feels like growing up, seeing teenagers from the lower 48 almost felt like a novelty
01:43because they were so different, and they had these different lives.
01:48They had lives that, like, to me, were like people on TV, almost.
01:53Like, the people in commercials get to do those things.
01:57They're like, you know, we don't have an Ikea.
02:00We don't have any of that.
02:02Way up north in the last frontier, teenage girls are just built different.
02:07They have to be.
02:09I was raised in a longstanding Alaskan family.
02:13A lot of kids and teens here are self-reliant.
02:16We were raised as we were foragers.
02:18We are here to be ourselves.
02:20We're not here to please anybody.
02:22It was our way of surviving.
02:24And if there's a teenage girl in Anchorage
02:27who embodies that independent frontier spirit,
02:30it's Denali Bremer.
02:32Denali is the highest mountain in North America,
02:36and it matches her personality
02:38because Denali has a very powerful personality.
02:41She's not a meek young woman.
02:43Denali had a very difficult early childhood.
02:47As a child, Denali had no control over her life,
02:50and she was very self-reliant.
02:53The time that I first met Denali Bremer would have been 2017.
03:01She had joined cross-country running at Service High School.
03:05Denali was very friendly.
03:06She was very, like, outgoing and gregarious,
03:09and she was funny in kind of a quirky way.
03:13Denali played by her own rules.
03:16She was kind of edgy that way.
03:19Denali did not easily make friends with girls.
03:22She just seemed to like hanging around with boys younger than her,
03:26including Caleb Leland and Caden McIntosh.
03:32Denali and her guys were doing pretty typical teenage rebellions.
03:37They were skipping school here and there.
03:39They would flip off cop cars when they went by.
03:42They were a group of misfits, up to some mischief.
03:47Denali, being this boss leader lady,
03:49enjoyed having this group that she could really command.
03:54And like male drones to their queen bee,
03:56Caleb and Caden are loyal and always ready to serve.
04:01Every time I met Denali, there was a driver,
04:04and that was Caleb.
04:06Caleb helped Denali go wherever she wanted.
04:09And if you were her friend, you were almost a minion.
04:14Denali had no problem telling people off
04:17and doing whatever she wanted to do.
04:19She was a very intense person,
04:20and if you got on her bad side,
04:23she made sure that you knew it.
04:25Denali might be the captain of her own band of lost boys.
04:28But in the fall of 2018,
04:31a new student at Service High School
04:33will show her that girls play by a different set of rules.
04:36Cynthia Hoffman transferred into Service High School
04:40because it was a bigger school, more diverse,
04:43more able to meet everyone's academic needs.
04:45As Cynthia was going into her senior year,
04:48she starts going by CC.
04:52First time I met CC,
04:53I was walking down the Service Corridor,
04:56going to the cafeteria.
04:58CC had a very outgoing personality,
05:00and that was really comforting for me
05:02because I was very reclusive.
05:04It could be tough at Service
05:06finding kind of where you belong,
05:08and she brought me out of my shell.
05:10We did a lot of things.
05:11We did slumber parties with our friend Bailey.
05:14I first met CC at Robert Service High School.
05:18She was a confident person.
05:21She would go up to everybody
05:23and make friends with them.
05:25She's very, like, that loud, bubbly person,
05:28but I absolutely love that about her.
05:30She liked music, boys,
05:33you know, the normal teenager stuff.
05:36She just wanted to have friends.
05:38She just wanted to fit in.
05:40She introduced me into anime.
05:42There was an anime club at Service,
05:44and she was like,
05:45oh, you should come to this club with me at lunch.
05:48We were the misfits.
05:49We didn't really belong anywhere.
05:51We just kind of belonged everywhere.
05:53This tight circle of friends seem unbreakable
05:56until the day CC meets Denali at school.
05:59Instantly, the two girls are inseparable.
06:03For Cynthia, when she met Denali,
06:04that friendship was very quick.
06:07It was like, one minute, she's just a friend.
06:10Now she's my best friend.
06:11Like, what changed there
06:12from one minute to the next?
06:14It's not surprising that she was drawn to Denali
06:17because she couldn't be more opposite than CC.
06:20Denali was living her life and had no rules.
06:23I'm sure that was kind of a draw for CC
06:26to look at someone living that way
06:28and have some curiosity
06:30about getting in trouble a little bit.
06:33The thing I saw about Denali
06:35on Cynthia's social media was like,
06:36hey, this is my name, Bessie.
06:38She's really cool.
06:40You know, I wouldn't fight anyone for her.
06:42I think that CC saw Denali
06:44as, like, a fun person to be around,
06:46and she liked the rebellious nature of Denali
06:48just because, like, ooh, I could never do this.
06:51I'll get in trouble.
06:51As they started to spend more time together,
06:58they realized they did actually have things in common.
07:00They liked to go outdoors.
07:02They liked to talk about boys.
07:04And Denali started to realize,
07:06oh, I actually do enjoy having a female friend.
07:11Cynthia was interested in dating.
07:13She was a little more awkward about it.
07:15She was very much someone
07:16who would wait for you to make the first move.
07:20She had a few crushes.
07:23She'd get, like, really giggly and excited about it.
07:26And then they'd end up dating.
07:27It's super fun, but it's never very long.
07:30Both CC and Denali loved boys,
07:32but they were very, very different.
07:35Denali went after what she wanted very aggressively.
07:39Denali wanted what Denali wanted,
07:41and she would do whatever it took to get it.
07:44And I am leaving till I get my wish of dopamine.
07:49CC may be 100% Team Denali,
07:52but the members of her girl squad have questions.
08:01Denali did have a, I don't give a f***, attitude, you know?
08:05And it was very concerning for me
08:08to see Cynthia with someone like that
08:11because Cynthia was very much eager to please.
08:16Denali was one of those people
08:18who kind of behaves like they're instantly your best friend
08:21and is, like, by your side
08:23and is constantly talking to you,
08:25constantly asking questions,
08:26constantly involving themselves
08:28in, you know, your conversations.
08:31It was kind of hard to shake her.
08:32The girls grow even closer
08:37until the spring semester of CC's senior year
08:40when her fantasy of a true romance
08:43finally starts to look like a reality.
08:46There was one boy named Zach.
08:48They had more of a situationship.
08:51They would flirt off and on,
08:53and are we an item, are we not?
08:56CC always talked to me about Zach.
08:59CC would be like,
09:00Zach and I were really good at first,
09:02but now we don't know what's going to happen next
09:05in their relationship.
09:07But at the end of May,
09:09she said that her and Zach broke up.
09:14And the reason why shocks everybody.
09:18Denali claimed that she ended up sleeping with Zach.
09:21and this led to a huge blowout.
09:28You can imagine both sides of Denali saying,
09:32I do what I want,
09:34and CC being, you're my friend.
09:36You're not supposed to break these kind of girl code rules.
09:41For Denali, to sleep with Zach,
09:42I could understand CC's anger.
09:44Having someone betray you like that,
09:46I could see why that would cause a fight.
09:49I would be very angry, very hurt.
09:52For CC, this was a line
09:54that should not have ever been crossed.
09:57Many of us have had relationships
09:59where you tolerate certain things,
10:01but what you don't really realize
10:03is slowly those resentments are building up.
10:05Even the most patient friends
10:08have their breaking points.
10:20After everyone found out about Denali and Zach,
10:23CC's friends began to notice
10:25slight changes in CC.
10:29She'd get in her head
10:30and kind of shut down a little bit.
10:32And that, I mean,
10:33for most of us here in Alaska,
10:35that's normal.
10:35We weren't raised to talk about our feelings.
10:39She was almost avoidant of conflict.
10:43I talked to CC.
10:44I told her that Denali probably wouldn't be
10:47the best friend that CC wanted her to be.
10:49But CC really did believe in that friendship.
10:53She wanted to keep their friendship going
10:56as best as she could.
10:58CC wouldn't have pushed back on anything.
11:01She really cared for Zach,
11:03but she didn't want to, like,
11:04be in the middle of conflict all the time.
11:06So she would just let it go.
11:10CC and Denali made up.
11:11They were able to move on past that
11:13and continued with their friendship.
11:19No one knows for sure if Denali really hooked up with Zach.
11:23But CC writes it off as a one-time thing
11:25and is ready to move on,
11:27especially when a new guy slides into her DMs.
11:30When she said that, her and Zach broke up.
11:33CC also said,
11:35hey, I might have found a new guy online named Joseph.
11:39She wanted to find another guy to be with.
11:42And I'm like, okay, that's a little odd.
11:45How do you go from one person to the next
11:47in, like, the next week or so?
11:49CC trusted everybody.
11:51The thought of not having anybody there
11:54or anybody to listen scares Cynthia.
11:58And having that caring aspect
12:00was very important for her.
12:03After her blow-up with Denali over Zach,
12:06CC keeps her new flirtation with Joseph under the radar.
12:12Meanwhile, never one to play it safe,
12:15Denali jumps headfirst into her own online romance
12:18with a handsome stranger.
12:21Denali went online often
12:23and she would try to lure much older men.
12:26She would say, I will do certain things.
12:29If you are interested, text me.
12:31And then she would send photos to them
12:34for money of her doing certain things
12:38that they wanted her to do.
12:40One of the men that responded to her
12:42was named Tyler.
12:44And Tyler was this good-looking guy
12:47who said he was a millionaire
12:49who lived in Kansas.
12:51He and Denali began corresponding.
12:55She called Tyler babe
12:56and he called her angel.
12:59She got to know him, got to like him,
13:01claimed she fell in love with him.
13:02In the spring of 2019,
13:12CC was graduating high school,
13:13which was a huge deal.
13:15Academics didn't come the easiest to her.
13:18So for her to be graduating,
13:20it brought out the whole family to the ceremony.
13:23All of her siblings and her parents
13:25are cheering her on.
13:26It was a really big deal.
13:27After Cynthia graduated high school,
13:32her main goal was to work with her dad,
13:35Tim Hoffman, at his handyman service.
13:38Cynthia loved working with her dad.
13:41She loved to do the prepping,
13:43taping everything off.
13:45She just really loved the hands-on learning.
13:47She and Denali still say
13:50they are thick as thieves.
13:51But those who know CC best
13:53are starting to see cracks in their friendship.
13:57After graduation,
13:58I feel like Denali and Cynthia
14:01did become closer.
14:03It was almost like they were inseparable.
14:05But a lot of the friendship
14:08that CC and Denali had,
14:10it seemed very transactional.
14:13Denali never had an issue
14:14asking for anything.
14:15and she'd ask Cynthia to buy her things.
14:19Oh, I don't have enough for this.
14:20Can you buy me food?
14:21Can you buy me just random things?
14:24Denali saw someone
14:26that she could have control over.
14:29Someone who she could influence.
14:38I feel like Denali might have been
14:40unwilling to let her have other friends.
14:43A couple times,
14:45I tried reaching out to her
14:46and being like,
14:46hey, you want to hang out today?
14:47And she'd be like,
14:48oh, I'm hanging out with friends.
14:50Like, she wouldn't really even, like,
14:51specify who she was hanging out with.
14:53It was just friends
14:54or very short, simple answers
14:56that were very vague.
14:59I didn't get to see her as much.
15:01It was overwhelming to
15:03kind of realize that,
15:06in a sense,
15:06I was losing my friend.
15:14Cynthia is really into anime.
15:16It was a tradition for us
15:17to go together
15:18kind of as a group.
15:20We'd go to Comic-Con,
15:22Senshi-Con,
15:22sometimes they call it Arctic-Con.
15:24Cynthia always seemed happiest
15:26at the conventions.
15:28But that year,
15:30the two days or three days beforehand,
15:32she had called me
15:33and she was like,
15:33hey, I'm going to go with someone else.
15:36I ended up going
15:37and I saw her there
15:39with Denali.
15:46And it was almost like
15:48she wasn't even acknowledging me.
15:51It was very unlike her
15:52because usually when she saw people
15:53she knew,
15:54it was, hey, how you doing?
15:57And it was almost like,
15:58in a sense,
15:59like she was on a leash.
16:01She didn't feel comfortable enough
16:03to come say hello.
16:04And it kind of hurt.
16:09I respected Cynthia's friendship.
16:12I wanted her to be able
16:14to go out there
16:15and make friends in the world.
16:16But while we were at Senshi-Con,
16:19I had heard something
16:20I was concerned about.
16:21There was a couple of times
16:23Denali would make jokes
16:24calling Cynthia
16:25to her face.
16:27And that was very emotional for me
16:29because it did hurt Cynthia a lot.
16:31You could kind of see it
16:32in her face,
16:33but she would always kind of
16:34fix that mask
16:35and make it look like she was okay.
16:38Cece's cold shoulder
16:39might leave a chill,
16:41but a true best friend
16:42will always have your back
16:44and lend an ear,
16:45no matter what.
16:46There were times
16:50where Cynthia would have
16:51a bit of a meltdown.
16:53She'd be very emotional.
16:56There was one time
16:57on a phone call
16:58after her and Denali
16:59had gotten in a fight
17:00that Cynthia was like,
17:01Denali is mad at me.
17:02I don't understand
17:03what I did wrong.
17:04And I'm like,
17:05what did you do wrong?
17:06Like,
17:06what are we talking about here?
17:08And I just remember her repeating,
17:10I don't know what I did wrong.
17:11I don't know what I did wrong.
17:12Cece started to become,
17:19like, secretive.
17:21Cece didn't want anyone
17:23to know what her and Denali
17:24were, like, fighting about
17:26because Cece wanted to try
17:28to deal with it on her own.
17:30And it was weird
17:31because we all saw that.
17:33Cece was trying to find ways
17:34to get out of that relationship.
17:36And just when it seems
17:38Cece has decided
17:39to cut bait with Denali,
17:40she gets an offer
17:41no true Alaskan girl
17:43can refuse.
17:51On June 2nd,
17:52Cynthia and one of her sisters
17:54went to the mall.
17:57They were hanging out,
17:59having fun,
18:00looking for makeup,
18:02clothes,
18:03and just, you know,
18:04clowning around in the mall.
18:07And while she was at the mall,
18:09she received a text
18:11from Denali
18:11asking her if she wanted
18:12to go on a hike that day.
18:14So they make a plan
18:15to have Kayden and Denali
18:17pick Cece up from the mall
18:18and head off to Thunderbird Falls
18:20to take a nice and easy hike.
18:24Cece always loved hiking
18:26and outdoors.
18:29And Thunderbird Falls
18:30was always a popular place to go.
18:34There's areas in Thunderbird Falls
18:38where it's very private.
18:41We used to throw parties
18:42up there as kids.
18:43They have their own main trails
18:45and stuff like that,
18:46but you can get off
18:46the beaten path,
18:48you know,
18:49and find little private spots
18:50on the creek.
18:52Once Kayden and Denali
18:53arrive at the mall,
18:55Cece tells her sister goodbye
18:56and she's off.
18:57That day,
19:03Tim called me up
19:04and said,
19:05we're going to go do a job,
19:07go grab Cynthia
19:08and bring her to the job site.
19:09So I called Cynthia
19:11and there was no answer,
19:13which was not normal.
19:17She always answers
19:18when I call.
19:21You just could sense
19:22that there was something off.
19:24I have a bad feeling about this.
19:41Later that afternoon,
19:42Timothy Hoffman
19:43is waiting for Cece
19:44to return home
19:45from her hike
19:45and he starts
19:47to get a little nervous
19:48because he's not hearing
19:49from her
19:50with their normal check-ins.
19:51Timothy asked me
19:54if I knew
19:55where Cece was
19:56and I told him no,
19:58but I can give her a call
20:00and see where she is myself
20:01and every time
20:03I would try to call Cece,
20:04straight divorce mail.
20:07It was very concerning
20:08because Cece
20:10would always pick up her phone
20:11whenever we need
20:13to talk to her.
20:15Eventually,
20:15he did receive a text
20:17from Cece
20:18that said,
20:20oh, yep,
20:21I went on this hike
20:21and my friends
20:22dropped me off at a park.
20:23But when he tried to call,
20:26there's no answer.
20:29So even though
20:30he got that text,
20:32he was already on edge
20:33feeling like something was wrong.
20:37Later on that evening,
20:39Timothy is so concerned,
20:40he actually does go
20:41to the police department
20:42because he wants to file
20:43a missing persons report.
20:45The police were
20:46trying to tell him
20:47that not to worry,
20:49you know,
20:49kids do this all the time.
20:51he goes,
20:51no,
20:52you don't understand.
20:54You know,
20:54my kids check in
20:55every two hours.
20:56We don't have
20:57that kind of relationship.
20:59We let each other know
21:00where we are
21:01and what we're doing.
21:03He told me,
21:03I got texts from her,
21:05but she would answer
21:06her phone.
21:07If I called,
21:08dad calls,
21:09you answer.
21:09They were not able
21:12to take a police report
21:13that night
21:14because number one,
21:15she was responding
21:16to text messages
21:17and number two,
21:18she was 19 years old.
21:19She's technically an adult.
21:21She can do whatever she wants.
21:22She doesn't have to answer
21:23the phone for her dad.
21:24Every minute that C.C. is gone
21:27feels like an eternity.
21:30And in Alaska,
21:32time is the enemy.
21:34Honestly,
21:34teens go missing
21:35in Anchorage a lot
21:36because of various,
21:38you know,
21:38disasters that occur,
21:40like a bear attack
21:42or a moose attack.
21:43constantly there are
21:46missing flyers
21:46for teens in Anchorage.
21:48We definitely have
21:49a really big issue
21:50with like missing
21:50and murdered
21:51indigenous women.
21:52One study put Alaska
21:53fourth in the nation
21:55for missing
21:55and murdered
21:56indigenous people,
21:57mostly women.
21:58And that same study
21:59said Anchorage
21:59has the third highest
22:00number of cases
22:01of any city
22:02in the country.
22:04Depending on like
22:05what you're doing
22:06and who you're with,
22:07it's really easy
22:08to get kind of mixed up
22:10in sex trafficking
22:12and also drug trafficking.
22:13When people go missing
22:17in Alaska
22:17and in Anchorage
22:19specifically,
22:20it can feel really hopeless
22:21because it's really spread out.
22:25And so there's a lot of places
22:27a person could go
22:28or be taken.
22:34Timothy did know
22:36that Cece was supposed
22:37to be going on a hike
22:38with Denali.
22:39So he reached out
22:40to Denali going,
22:41you're her best friend.
22:42you were supposedly
22:43with her this afternoon.
22:44What the heck
22:45is going on?
22:48Denali said
22:49she wanted me
22:50to drop her off
22:51at the polar bear
22:52playground
22:52and she was supposed
22:53to meet a guy.
22:55And I don't know
22:56much about the guy.
22:57I'm a little bit worried
22:57about what happened
22:59to her.
23:01Once things fell apart
23:02with Zach,
23:04Cece was still seeking
23:05that great love
23:06that every teenage girl
23:07is looking for.
23:09As a teenager in Alaska,
23:11she's online
23:11and she's on social media
23:13and it's there
23:15that she's meeting people
23:16from all around the world
23:17and really opening her eyes
23:19to a lot of possibilities.
23:22Could this guy Denali
23:23is concerned about
23:24be Joseph,
23:25the mystery man
23:26Cece told Bailey about?
23:28There had been some boys
23:29in Cece's life
23:30that Denali
23:31just had a bad feeling about.
23:34Denali had this theory
23:35that Cece was very innocent,
23:38you would even say naive,
23:40and Cece was going to be
23:42meeting up with a boy,
23:43which was kind of scandalous,
23:45so that's why
23:46she wouldn't have told her father.
23:48Was she meeting up
23:49with someone
23:49that the family
23:51didn't know about
23:51and putting herself
23:52in a really dangerous situation?
23:55Everything was concerning.
23:59Cece has been missing
24:01for less than 24 hours,
24:03so police can't pull
24:05her phone records just yet.
24:07But those closest to Cece
24:08can't help worrying
24:10that Joseph
24:10or some other guy
24:12she met online
24:13could have pushed her
24:14to meet up in real life.
24:16It is really hard
24:17to get out of Anchorage,
24:18and it can be really frustrating
24:21and really lonely.
24:23A lot of people
24:24would use, like,
24:26online chat rooms
24:26and dating
24:27to connect with people
24:28in the lower 48,
24:30and some of them
24:31did go and, like,
24:32meet those people.
24:35For us,
24:36having someone
24:37to help us
24:38escape Alaska
24:39was a big thing,
24:42and it wasn't even, like,
24:44a matter of, like,
24:45escaping Alaska.
24:46It was just a matter
24:46of escaping
24:47the isolation.
24:52Talking to the people
24:52in the lower 48
24:53made us feel
24:54a little more connected.
24:55It made us feel
24:56like we weren't
24:58so far away
24:59or so foreign.
25:04I thought that
25:06Cece was kidnapped
25:08by this guy
25:09named Joseph,
25:10who probably
25:11would have been
25:12way over her age.
25:14I was scared for her.
25:15On June 2nd,
25:29we had a hard time
25:31sleeping.
25:32We were all worried,
25:34sick.
25:35We'd all stay up,
25:36doing shifts
25:36of staying up
25:37just to see
25:38when Cynthia
25:38comes home.
25:40But she never
25:41came home
25:41that night.
25:42after a sleepless
25:46night,
25:47the morning
25:49of the 3rd,
25:50Tim went back
25:50to the police station
25:52and once again
25:52tried to file
25:53a police report.
25:55This time,
25:56they did take
25:57the information down
25:58and started
25:59that investigative
26:00process.
26:02Given what Denali
26:03had said
26:03about Cece's
26:04disappearance,
26:05that when she
26:05dropped her off,
26:06it seemed like
26:07she was maybe
26:07going to go
26:07meet with a boy,
26:08that was the first
26:09direction everyone
26:10thought to look.
26:11but there just
26:13wasn't really
26:14any evidence
26:14of a secret
26:15boyfriend.
26:17So,
26:18Timothy took it
26:18upon himself
26:19to do what
26:20he called
26:20going hunting
26:21and he contacted
26:22all of his
26:23motorcycle friends
26:23and asked them
26:24to help in the
26:24search.
26:27The search
26:28party focuses
26:29their effort
26:29on Russian
26:30Jack Springs
26:31Park,
26:31where Denali
26:32dropped Cece
26:33off the day
26:33before.
26:34We went
26:35to that park
26:36and I had
26:38a group
26:38of 10 people.
26:39this big
26:41wooded area
26:42which used
26:44to be a
26:44camping area.
26:46It starts
26:46at the
26:47Polar Bear
26:47Park
26:48and we were
26:49going to
26:49just go
26:50comb through
26:51the woods.
26:53We thought,
26:53you know,
26:54if anything
26:54happened,
26:55we'd find her.
26:57We were all
26:58walking the trails,
27:00calling her name.
27:02We were trying
27:03to go to the
27:03park and just
27:04see if we'd
27:06seen anything
27:06and at that point,
27:07you know,
27:07I'm a little,
27:08anxious but I'm
27:09also more hopeful
27:10because we had
27:12a couple kids
27:13come up and
27:13say, hey,
27:14we think we saw
27:15Cynthia just
27:17here with the
27:17guy.
27:19We were, like,
27:20excited because
27:21we got a lead.
27:22It did give me
27:23a little bit of hope
27:24that everything
27:25was going to be
27:25okay.
27:27She's going to
27:27come home,
27:27we're going to
27:27find her.
27:29But the next
27:29day, the news
27:31broke out.
27:32while everyone
27:36is still
27:36searching for
27:37CeCe,
27:38her Uncle Don
27:39went to
27:39Polar Bear
27:40Playground
27:40just to look
27:41for himself
27:42to see if
27:42there was
27:42any sign
27:43of her.
27:44And what
27:44he was
27:45shocked to
27:45find
27:45was nothing.
27:50There were
27:51no investigators,
27:52no police
27:53presence,
27:54no one else
27:54was there
27:55and he
27:56couldn't
27:56understand
27:57why.
27:57A cop
27:59happened to
28:00be in the
28:00parking lot
28:01of the
28:02Polar Bear
28:02Park.
28:03I said,
28:04how come
28:05there's nobody
28:05out here
28:06from the
28:06police,
28:07you know,
28:08searching for
28:09Cynthia?
28:10And they
28:10go, oh,
28:11we already
28:11got news
28:12that Cynthia
28:13was up
28:13at Thunderbird
28:14Falls and
28:16we're looking
28:16for her
28:17there.
28:18And that's
28:19when I knew
28:21that it was
28:22not going
28:22to be good.
28:25I could
28:26just feel it
28:26right down
28:27to my
28:27bones.
28:29Anchorage
28:29police have
28:30received a
28:30tip that
28:31directs them
28:32to retrace
28:32Cece's steps
28:33all the way
28:33back to
28:34Thunderbird
28:34Falls.
28:36All her
28:36family can
28:37do is
28:38wait.
28:41Tim and
28:41I were
28:41in his
28:42office and
28:43he gets
28:44a knock
28:44on the
28:44door.
28:46He goes,
28:47I need
28:47to step
28:48out for
28:49a minute.
28:54Please.
28:54and I
28:57was praying
28:58to God,
28:58please be
28:59some form
29:00of good
29:00news.
29:02Please.
29:03And he
29:04comes to
29:05the door
29:05silent,
29:08slams the
29:09door,
29:11doesn't say
29:11a word,
29:13and punched
29:14a hole in
29:15the wall.
29:20Tim got
29:21the news
29:22that they
29:22found
29:23Cynthia
29:23Thunderbird
29:24Falls
29:24shot in
29:28the back
29:29of the
29:29head,
29:32execution
29:33style,
29:34in the
29:37river,
29:38and we
29:39just,
29:40we just
29:41all cried.
29:43We cried
29:44hard,
29:47so hard.
29:48I
29:50remember
29:50feeling,
29:51when I
29:52found out
29:52what had
29:52happened,
29:53just this
29:54gut-wrenching
29:55anger,
29:57this hurt,
30:00and this
30:01fire.
30:04I don't
30:05remember much
30:06after that
30:07day.
30:08I think I
30:09locked myself
30:09in my room
30:10for 48
30:10hours,
30:12and I
30:13didn't want
30:13to be
30:14bothered,
30:14I didn't
30:15want to
30:15talk to
30:15anybody,
30:15I just
30:16shut down.
30:18she
30:21just
30:22had her
30:23whole
30:23future
30:24ahead of
30:24her.
30:25She
30:25wanted to
30:26get
30:26married,
30:28have
30:28kids,
30:30she knew
30:30nothing was
30:31easy in
30:32life,
30:32but she
30:32just wanted
30:33to enjoy
30:33her life.
30:36So,
30:37if you
30:38could just
30:38give me a
30:38second.
30:40Oh,
30:40my God.
30:48because
30:49Denali
30:49had been
30:50the last
30:50person
30:50known to
30:51be with
30:51CeCe,
30:52she was
30:52brought in
30:53for questioning.
30:54They wanted
30:54to know,
30:55where did you
30:55go hiking?
30:56Was there
30:57anyone there?
30:57What happened?
30:59And what
30:59police find
31:00is a
31:01terrified
31:01Denali,
31:02who is
31:02finally ready
31:03to tell a
31:04harrowing story.
31:05Denali told
31:15the police
31:15that she
31:16and CeCe
31:17and
31:18Caden
31:18went for
31:21a walk
31:21in the
31:21woods.
31:24Caden
31:24said,
31:25let's tie
31:25each other
31:25up and
31:26take photos.
31:28He had
31:29duct tape
31:29in his
31:29pocket
31:30just by
31:30chance.
31:32She
31:33said,
31:33I had
31:33this plan
31:34of taking
31:34these funny
31:35photos or
31:36prank photos.
31:37They were
31:38going to
31:38be bound
31:39with duct
31:39tape.
31:42They said,
31:43CeCe,
31:43you want
31:43to go
31:43first?
31:44And of
31:44course,
31:44she wanted
31:45to do
31:45what they
31:46wanted her
31:46to do.
31:47So she
31:48said yes.
31:50And when
31:50they duct
31:51taped her
31:51hands and
31:52her ankles
31:53and her
31:53mouth,
31:54she started
31:55to panic.
31:57Once she
31:57starts freaking
31:58out,
31:58they take
31:59the tape
31:59off of
32:00CeCe's
32:00mouth.
32:00And she's
32:01so upset,
32:02she starts
32:02saying,
32:03I'm going
32:03to call
32:03the cops,
32:04I'm going
32:04to say,
32:05you guys
32:05kidnapped me,
32:06assaulted me,
32:07whatever it
32:07is I need
32:08to say to
32:08make this
32:08stop.
32:10Caden starts
32:11freaking out
32:12because CeCe
32:13is saying she's
32:14going to call
32:14the cops.
32:15Denali did
32:16have a handgun
32:17with her,
32:18but was part
32:19of her bad
32:20girl image.
32:23And at that
32:24point,
32:24according to
32:25Denali,
32:26Caden rips the
32:27gun out of her
32:27hands and
32:28shoots CeCe.
32:29she falls
32:33to the ground.
32:34Caden then
32:35pushes her
32:36body off
32:36of this
32:37steep edge
32:38into the
32:38water.
32:41Denali now
32:41has just
32:42watched her
32:42best friend
32:43be murdered
32:44in front of
32:44her,
32:45and this
32:46friend of
32:46hers is
32:46now armed.
32:49Denali
32:50was scared.
32:50She thought
32:51he was going
32:51to shoot
32:51her next.
32:53This had
32:54escalated so
32:55quickly to the
32:56point of murder.
32:57she doesn't
32:58know what
32:58to do
32:58except to
32:59keep Caden
33:00happy so
33:01that he
33:01doesn't do
33:01the same
33:02to her.
33:04They went
33:05back down
33:05to the
33:05vehicle,
33:06and he
33:07told her
33:08to text
33:09CeCe's
33:09parents on
33:10CeCe's
33:11phone and
33:12tell them
33:12that she
33:13had been
33:13dropped off
33:14somewhere,
33:15acting like
33:16she had no
33:16idea what
33:17happened to
33:18CeCe.
33:19And then
33:19they burned
33:20some clothes,
33:21burned CeCe's
33:22purse,
33:22got rid of
33:23her phone.
33:24News of an
33:25arrest in
33:26this terrible
33:26crime spreads
33:28through Anchorage
33:29like wildfire.
33:3016-year-old
33:31Caden McIntosh
33:32is under
33:33arrest,
33:34charged in
33:34Cynthia's
33:35death.
33:35Her father
33:36attended
33:36McIntosh's
33:37arraignment
33:37this afternoon,
33:39hoping to
33:39block his
33:40bail.
33:41This is
33:41Cynthia.
33:42My daughter
33:42was an
33:43angel.
33:43She was
33:44daddy's
33:44girl.
33:45Caden
33:45claims he
33:46doesn't
33:47remember
33:47much,
33:48but he
33:48admits to
33:49pulling
33:49the
33:49trigger.
33:51Caden
33:52shot her
33:52and just
33:53kicked her
33:53right into
33:54the river
33:55like she
33:56was nothing
33:57like she
33:57was a
33:58piece of
34:00meat.
34:02I hope
34:02he rots
34:03in hell.
34:05In the
34:06days that
34:06follow,
34:07Denali appears
34:08traumatized by
34:09the tragedy of
34:09what happened at
34:10Thunderbird Falls
34:11that afternoon.
34:12Denali and CeCe
34:14had both been
34:14victims of
34:15Caden.
34:16Denali had
34:16survived a
34:17horrible scene.
34:19But for those
34:20who follow her
34:20on social media,
34:22her behavior
34:22starts to tell a
34:23very different
34:24story from
34:25the one she
34:25told police.
34:27When I
34:28found out
34:29about the
34:29Snapchat post,
34:30I was like,
34:32what the
34:32F is going
34:34on, you
34:34know?
34:34Like, what
34:35is this?
34:39I'm sorry.
34:42I'm sorry.
34:43I'm sorry.
34:43Two days after
34:49they arrest
34:50Caden, a
34:51social media
34:52contact of
34:53Denali's reached
34:53out to police
34:54and informed
34:55them of this
34:56video.
34:59I'm sorry.
35:01I didn't mean
35:02to do it.
35:03I didn't mean
35:04to do it.
35:06In the video,
35:07Denali is seen
35:08wearing the same
35:09clothes she was
35:09wearing when she
35:10was interviewed
35:11on the 3rd.
35:12and she
35:13seems to be
35:13admitting guilt
35:14to something.
35:15I didn't mean
35:15to do it.
35:20Police brought
35:20Denali in for
35:21questioning once
35:22again, and the
35:23story overall was
35:24the same.
35:25But because this
35:26video had been
35:27posted on social
35:28media, that
35:29allowed them to
35:30get a search
35:30warrant to check
35:31Denali's phone.
35:32And once they
35:33searched her
35:34phone, they see
35:35unbelievably horrific
35:37pictures of Cece
35:39when she was
35:39murdered.
35:40And Denali had
35:41taken those
35:41pictures and sent
35:43them to Tyler.
35:47After investigators
35:48found these
35:49horrible images,
35:50they wanted to
35:50know who Tyler
35:51was.
35:52So they asked
35:52Denali, and she
35:53explained that
35:54that's her
35:55boyfriend.
35:55They met
35:56online.
35:56His name is
35:57Tyler.
35:57He lives in
35:58Kansas, and
35:59he's a
35:59multimillionaire.
36:01Denali did
36:02sexual favors for
36:03him online, and
36:05Denali kept
36:06doing riskier and
36:08riskier things for
36:10Tyler, because he
36:12paid her very well.
36:13And she fell in love
36:15with him.
36:16And then she told the
36:17police everything.
36:19Denali tells
36:20investigators that for
36:21Tyler, the ultimate
36:22thrill isn't online
36:23fantasy.
36:24It's real-life
36:26violence.
36:26three weeks before the
36:30murder, Tyler had
36:31actually made a
36:32proposal.
36:33If Denali
36:34Bremer would be
36:35willing to murder
36:36someone and send
36:37him photographic
36:38evidence, he was
36:39going to send her
36:39$9 million.
36:42For a teenager in
36:43Anchorage, that's a
36:44ticket to a whole new
36:45life.
36:46The biggest issue
36:47Denali had was that
36:48she didn't know who to
36:49kill.
36:50Fast forward a couple
36:51weeks, and she and
36:53Cece have their huge
36:54fight about Zach.
36:56That's when Tyler
36:57recommends that Cece
36:58should be the victim.
37:00She's emotional, she's
37:01angry, and Denali
37:02agrees.
37:04Once Denali decides
37:05on Cece as her
37:06murder victim, she
37:08knows just who to
37:09call to make certain
37:10the deed gets done.
37:12Caden and Caleb.
37:14They spend weeks
37:15plotting the murder.
37:17The roles were Caden
37:18went with Denali to
37:20Thunderbird Falls, and
37:21Caleb let them borrow
37:23his vehicle.
37:24and help them plot
37:25what they were going
37:26to do.
37:28They purposely took
37:29her to Thunderbird
37:30Falls.
37:30They knew the area, and
37:32they knew that they
37:32were taking her back
37:33there to murder her.
37:35They knew that the
37:36duct tape was part of
37:37the murder plot, not a
37:38photo shoot.
37:40After they took the
37:41duct tape off her
37:42mouth, she started
37:43screaming, and Denali
37:45pulled the gun, and she
37:47told Caden to shoot her
37:49in the back of the head.
37:50I couldn't shake the fact
37:58that Denali was the
37:59math of mine between all
38:00of this.
38:01Even when Caden was the
38:02one that shot the gun, it
38:03was still under Denali's
38:05instructions.
38:06Don't be fooled by their
38:08age.
38:08They knew what they were
38:09doing.
38:10They knew exactly what
38:11they were doing.
38:12Cynthia just wanted to fit
38:13in.
38:14She just wanted to have
38:14friends, and Denali was
38:16showing her a lot of
38:18attention.
38:19That's how she got
38:20suckered in.
38:23I think Denali's a
38:24horrible person.
38:26You know, to befriend
38:27somebody, to kill them,
38:29she wanted money.
38:32That is not a juvenile
38:33crony.
38:34That's an adult kind.
38:36It was sickening.
38:39As shocking as the
38:40details of CeCe's murder
38:42are, it's Denali who
38:44receives the biggest
38:45surprise of all.
38:47Now that he's part of
38:48this murder, police start
38:50looking into Tyler, and
38:51they learn that Tyler
38:52doesn't exist.
38:55Tyler is actually 21-year-old
38:57Darren Schumiller, who
38:59lives in his
38:59grandparents' basement in
39:01Indiana, and he is not a
39:03multimillionaire.
39:05She was being catfished by
39:06Tyler, and actually when
39:08they showed her a photo of
39:09the real Darren, which did
39:11not look like Tyler, she
39:12just tore it up.
39:13she was not pleased, to
39:15say the least.
39:17Three days after Cynthia
39:18Hoffman's body is found,
39:2018-year-old Denali Bremer is
39:22arrested for her murder.
39:26It takes almost five years,
39:29but in early 2024, Denali
39:32Bremer pleads guilty to murder,
39:34and Darren Schumiller pleads
39:36guilty to the solicitation of
39:38murder of Cynthia Hoffman.
39:40both are sentenced to 99 years
39:43in prison.
39:43When we went to federal court
39:46for sentencing, Denali was
39:49trying to make herself, well,
39:50I'm not that bad of a person,
39:52but she is.
39:53I spoke to the judge directly,
39:55I pushed for the maximum
39:56sentence.
39:57There is no death penalty up
39:59here, so they got the max,
40:0199 years.
40:02Six months later, Caleb Leland
40:06is sentenced to 40 years
40:07in prison after pleading
40:09guilty to murder.
40:11Caden McIntosh still awaits
40:13sentencing.
40:17Cynthia was someone good,
40:18someone amazing, someone who
40:20knew right from wrong,
40:24someone who knew how to love.
40:28She was literally my life
40:30support for the longest time.
40:32Denali has hurt more people
40:36than she could ever realize.
40:39She took my best friend.
40:54We lost two wonderful people.
40:58I just feel like Cynthia
41:02wanted Dad home.
41:05I miss my brother.
41:08I miss Cynthia.
41:10But it does bring a lot of peace
41:12to know they're together now.
41:14on the next Mean Girl Murders.
41:22We go to church together.
41:24It was good girl versus bad girl.
41:27The good girl never wins.
41:28She was the queen scorpion.
41:30Girl on girl crime can be
41:32very, very cruel.
41:33Nobody saw it coming.
41:35I think absolutely the devil
41:37has a hand in this crime.
41:38She was killed.
41:39But it was very nice.
41:40That's right.
41:41I love you.
41:42I don't know.
41:42The way I do.
41:42It was a bad girl.
41:43I love you.
41:44I love you.
41:44I love you.
41:45You know, I love you.
41:45I don't know.
41:46I love you.
