00:30...the good girl, because the good girl never wins.
00:35They were almost devil-like.
00:38She was their leader, the queen scorpion.
00:42Girl-on-girl crime can be very, very cruel.
00:46But the violence in this case was absolutely stunning to me.
00:50I think absolutely the devil has a hand in this crime.
01:00It was Memorial Day weekend.
01:16Every year we would always have a party.
01:18That was like a gathering place for people.
01:22And to spend time with their family and catch up.
01:24I never would have dreamed that that weekend would have ended the way that it did.
01:36When I first got the call from dispatch, it was around 10 o'clock that Sunday night.
01:42A home had been broken into.
01:44The house is ransacked and we've got two missing females.
01:48When I got to the scene, it was around midnight.
01:55It was pitch dark.
01:58We had the entire area roped off.
02:02The home, the backyard, the woods.
02:06We didn't want anybody coming in or out.
02:08And then we found a body.
02:19There was multiple stab wounds.
02:22I've worked a lot of homicides over my 30-year career, but I've never seen one quite like this.
02:30You have to be up close and personal and right in their face.
02:34There was a sense of evil.
02:36Maybe the devil just came in and took over and did this.
02:58Max Meadows is a really small town of about 500 people.
03:02It's a rural area.
03:03It's a picturesque hometown.
03:07You don't lock your doors and you just feel safe.
03:14Max Meadows is part of what we call the Bible Belt here in rural Southwest Virginia.
03:19We have a lot of churches that have a lot of people in them on Sunday mornings.
03:23There's very few that I would say don't go to church because, I mean, it was a big deal.
03:32And Max Meadows, if you didn't go to church on the regular, they're going to be like, loser.
03:36You were loser number one.
03:37Piling into the pews at the Pentecostal church are Max Meadows' most faithful teens.
03:56middle school besties, Kendra, Heather, and Nikesha.
04:03I was the cheerleader, the outspoken one.
04:07Heather was the mom of the group.
04:09She made sure we walked the line.
04:12And Nikesha, she was kind of the follower.
04:15Nikesha Waddell grew up in a Pentecostal church.
04:20I mean, it's hard to explain because, like, I grew up in it, too.
04:24I think we're more, not necessarily weird, but on the stricter side.
04:32Drinking, smoking, premarital sex, you just don't do it.
04:38Ask Kendra about Pentecostal.
04:40It was always fun to go to Heather's Inn, Nikesha's church, because it was so different than my church.
04:52Their church was very loud and rowdy.
04:58Speaking in tongues, hellfire and brimstone.
05:01If you needed to be prayed for, you were brought down front.
05:05People laying out on the floor in the Spirit and Holy Ghost.
05:13So, I mean, I feel like we became such good friends because we shared the same beliefs.
05:23Not stealing, not lying, not, you know, treating people bad.
05:27Some people believe, you know, you can do whatever you want to on Saturday night.
05:33As long as you go to church on Sunday, you're good.
05:37And that's not me.
05:41My goal was to please God.
05:43I never thought I was better than anybody, but...
05:45It's a well-known secret that many of the local teenage girls are not exactly practicing what they preach.
05:58But in this pious town, image is everything.
06:02And the title for Most Perfect Parishioner goes to 13-year-old Nikesha Waddell.
06:11Nikesha was very obviously standing out from other teenage members of her church.
06:18Nikesha was still pure and godlike.
06:23Nikesha and her mom, Vaughn Thomas, they definitely were like a staple in the church.
06:29Vaughn was always helping with dinners, extra events, Bible schools.
06:36And, of course, Nikesha would be there to help as well.
06:40I feel like Vaughn was wanting her to live up to a certain expectation.
06:47I think the motive behind it was acceptance.
06:52That was the motive behind all of it.
06:55While Vaughn and Nikesha sit atop the church's holy hierarchy,
06:59their ascent wasn't easy.
07:03Nikesha was born in 1990.
07:06Her family was different from the rest of us.
07:09Her dad was never in the picture that I knew of,
07:13and that isn't really something that you would expect in a Pentecostal church.
07:18Unfortunately, members of the Pentecostal faith can be casting judgment upon you,
07:25which can sometimes be quite harsh.
07:27But Nikesha and her mother were a family unit unto themselves.
07:33Nikesha was a mama's girl.
07:35She was always with her mom.
07:38When Nikesha was three, Vaughn met Bobby Thomas.
07:43And they got married and moved to Max Meadows.
07:49Bobby did not attend church with Vaughn and Nikesha.
07:53He went to another church.
07:54But Bobby helped raise Nikesha with Vaughn.
07:57They were a perfect, close-knit family.
08:02While mother and daughter take pride in their well-earned gold status at their church,
08:07others at the church are green with envy.
08:11In Nikesha's church, there is a focus on family and faith.
08:15But you also have an enormous amount of focus on material possessions.
08:19The more that you have,
08:21the more well-loved and well-respected member of the community you became.
08:24I wouldn't say that Nikesha was spoiled,
08:30but she definitely didn't want for a whole lot.
08:34She had pretty much whatever she wanted.
08:38Clothes, cosmetics.
08:39If she wanted a new computer, she was going to get the computer.
08:44We all didn't have as much as Nikesha did.
08:50People that live in Max Meadows can be insanely jealous.
08:54And I know that I couldn't afford and my parents couldn't afford
08:58to buy everything they did for her.
09:03That's crazy.
09:09But as this godly girl enters her teen years,
09:13Nikesha faces a hard truth.
09:16Money doesn't buy happiness.
09:18At that time, Nikesha was about six foot tall.
09:22So she was quite a bit taller than everybody, boys and girls.
09:28She was bigger than...
09:30I think it really held her back from a lot her size did.
09:37In the summer, Nikesha and, you know, Kendra and I,
09:44we would always have a sleepover.
09:47We would do makeup and talk about boys and watch movies.
09:52If we were doing cheers, she kind of just sat back and watched.
10:01She was very shy.
10:03And, you know, I feel like maybe she felt a little left out.
10:07In eighth grade, that's when boys kind of start noticing you.
10:11Heather and I were getting attention from boys
10:17and being called pretty,
10:19and Nikesha wasn't getting the same attention.
10:32Starting our freshman year at Fort Chiswil High School,
10:35it's a whole new world.
10:36Heather and I were a grade younger than Nikesha.
10:43So when she went to high school,
10:45we were in middle school.
10:47So it was scary for both of us, really,
10:49because we were being separated.
10:54This is the Bible Belt,
10:56but you always have some kids that aren't raised in church.
11:02So Nikesha tried to avoid people who don't believe.
11:06Nikesha started out in the religious group
11:11being the nice, wholesome girl
11:13because people accepted her in the church,
11:17but somebody can turn on you so easily.
11:22Girls can be very, very cruel to each other.
11:28Nikesha just wanted to be included,
11:32but she didn't realize how dangerous that it actually was.
11:36Fort Chiswil High School was very small.
11:47It was maybe 100 people in the freshman class,
11:52and cliques were already kind of formed
11:54before you ever even got there.
11:57Nikesha just assumed that she'd be hanging out
12:00with the religious group
12:02because church played a big part in their lives.
12:06But Nikesha wasn't very popular in her gym class.
12:11She was always one of the last people picked,
12:14or not picked at all.
12:16There were girls who were members of Nikesha's church
12:21who needed to feel better about themselves
12:23by tearing down a girl like Nikesha
12:26with a lot of what I call girl-on-girl crime.
12:30They could be judgmental,
12:32and you do one wrong move or say one wrong thing.
12:35They don't forget it.
12:37I remember there was an instance
12:40when Nikesha was being bullied by another classmate.
12:45The church group were silent.
12:49They just let whatever happened happen
12:52without raising their voice or anything.
12:55So she was pretty much on her own.
12:57And then suddenly somebody came to Nikesha's defense.
13:09Nikesha's protector is an unlikely ally.
13:13Fellow freshman Annie Belcher.
13:17Annie was bigger than all of the other girls
13:20she got made fun of for her weight as well.
13:24However, she stuck up for herself.
13:28When she saw Nikesha being bullied by other people,
13:31Annie would refer to it as the Big Girl Code.
13:35Big Girl Code is if you mess with one of us,
13:40you mess with all of us.
13:42The big girls, we stick together.
13:45And they began to bond with each other.
13:48They connected on the fact of
13:51they weren't the most popular in the class.
13:54They weren't going to be homecoming queen.
13:57When I found out that, you know,
13:59Nikesha and Annie had struck up
14:00such a good friendship, I was shocked.
14:04That's because Annie has a reputation.
14:10Growing up, I was on the cheerleading team with Annie.
14:13Annie didn't have the foundation
14:16that we had going to church.
14:18She was the type that I was like,
14:20that I am just not,
14:22I'm not even going there.
14:26I met Annie in eighth grade.
14:29She wasn't part of my friend group.
14:34Annie's family was low class.
14:38They lived in a trailer.
14:40There were times when her mom was in prison.
14:47It's sad.
14:50I think Annie's upbringing
14:51started to shape her as a person.
14:56Annie was very delinquent in school.
14:59One year, she didn't even have her picture taken
15:01for the yearbook because she was suspended.
15:04She wore black a lot.
15:09She was just different.
15:13So no one really messed with her.
15:17I don't know.
15:18I don't want to say that.
15:20Her mom come after me.
15:26In high school, Annie's group,
15:28they were the outcast.
15:30They were against the church.
15:33They would draw pentagrams everywhere,
15:36the number six, three times.
15:40And Annie was their leader.
15:45The queen scorpion.
15:48She had some type of power
15:50over those individuals.
15:53And they were almost devil-like.
15:57Annie found her own way
15:58to be popular in a sense of
16:01it's popular to stay away from her.
16:07Her scare tactic was,
16:10you know, to be the bully.
16:12And it works.
16:16While Annie instills fear in others,
16:19she has a soft spot for Nikesha.
16:23Nikesha found somebody
16:25who was going to protect her.
16:27And she's suddenly feeling
16:29that she belongs somewhere.
16:32She was starting to wear
16:33black clothing
16:34and dark eyeliner,
16:38completely different
16:39than how she used to be.
16:41would still hang out after school,
16:50on the weekends.
16:53I could see that Nikesha,
16:55to a certain degree,
16:56was slowly changing.
16:59I remember one day,
17:01all of a sudden,
17:01Nikesha takes something
17:02from her pocket.
17:03She said,
17:06I stole this makeup
17:08from Walmart.
17:09And I'm just like,
17:11I know she did not
17:13just do that.
17:15That was my first
17:16realization that Nikesha
17:18maybe wasn't the person
17:20that I thought she was.
17:22Nikesha went from
17:23being a straight-A student
17:25to making D's and F's,
17:28skipping school
17:29and drinking alcohol,
17:31which,
17:32that's a big sin
17:34in the church.
17:34So that was
17:35a big
17:37wow.
17:42Nikesha lived
17:43the double life.
17:44You know,
17:45she would be
17:45friends with Annie
17:46at school
17:47and,
17:48you know,
17:49get to be the bully.
17:52And then she would go home
17:54to her mom
17:55and live the church life again.
17:57She was a good church girl
18:00on Sunday
18:01and I'm like,
18:02why is she there?
18:04You know,
18:04why was she there at all?
18:10In a small town
18:11like Max Meadows,
18:13secrets don't keep long.
18:15So it's only a matter of time
18:17before Nikesha's
18:18double life is exposed.
18:21Everybody talks.
18:22Everybody knows
18:23their business.
18:26Nikesha's mom,
18:27Vaughn,
18:28would get calls
18:29from the school
18:29saying that Nikesha
18:31did not show up.
18:33The people that knew
18:35Vaughn Thomas
18:36told her
18:36that they had suspected
18:38that Nikesha
18:38was using some alcohol
18:40and possibly even
18:41some illegal drugs.
18:43Vaughn made Nikesha
18:45get out a notebook
18:46and write
18:48the Lord's Prayer
18:49over and over again,
18:50thinking that
18:51it would
18:52help her.
18:53she used
18:56the religion
18:57as a form
18:58of discipline
18:59to try
19:01to heal her
19:02from the evil
19:03that she was
19:04now part of.
19:08Vaughn believes
19:09the devil
19:10has a vice grip
19:11on her daughter's heart
19:12and she knows
19:13exactly
19:14who's to blame.
19:15She saw this change
19:19in her kid
19:20from the time
19:21that she met Annie
19:23and she knew
19:26that it was only
19:27progressively
19:28going to get worse
19:29if something
19:31didn't change
19:32and Vaughn's
19:34only hope
19:35was for God
19:37to remove Annie
19:37from Nikesha's life.
19:39and if not God
19:41then someone else.
19:44Vaughn told Nikesha
19:45to get rid of Annie.
19:47Annie is not good
19:48for you.
19:50There was no
19:50stopping Vaughn.
19:52She wanted
19:53that friendship
19:53to end.
19:59In 2004
20:00there's a pressure cooker
20:01atmosphere happening
20:03in Nikesha's house.
20:05Nikesha was still
20:07engaging in risky behavior
20:08which was causing
20:09more fights
20:10and arguments
20:11with her mother
20:11because according
20:13to Vaughn
20:13Nikesha was sinning.
20:16Her relationship
20:17with Annie
20:18was definitely
20:19pushing her
20:21further and further
20:22from church
20:23from her mom
20:24from me.
20:26I think
20:27the devil
20:28was motivating
20:29her life.
20:34I know
20:35that Vaughn
20:36could feel
20:38the grip
20:40she was losing
20:41on Nikesha
20:42because she actually
20:43told my mom
20:44she said
20:45I went
20:46in Nikesha's room
20:48and anointed her room
20:50and prayed over it.
20:51She said
20:52because you just
20:52never know.
20:56The more that Nikesha
20:57acted out
20:58the more
20:58intense
20:59Vaughn became.
21:01In our faith
21:03anytime
21:04anytime something
21:05happens
21:06you go to God
21:07that's where
21:08you find help
21:09but
21:10she was
21:11starting down
21:12a path
21:13that was not
21:13going to end well.
21:22But the power
21:24of prayer
21:24isn't enough
21:25to stop Nikesha
21:27from straying
21:28into even more
21:29dangerous territory.
21:30In 2004
21:34that's really
21:36when like
21:36chat rooms
21:37started becoming
21:38a thing
21:39and
21:39we all
21:41did it.
21:43Nikesha's
21:43onscreen name
21:44was
21:44Sassin Sweet.
21:46She used
21:47that as
21:48almost like
21:50a fantasy
21:51life.
21:52She was
21:53talking to
21:55older men
21:56not anybody
21:57we knew.
21:59One of these
22:00older men
22:01seems to
22:02stand out
22:03as Nikesha's
22:03soulmate.
22:05Nikesha never
22:06had a boyfriend
22:07that I
22:08ever remember
22:10but
22:10she wasn't
22:11really
22:12you know
22:13the type
22:14that all the
22:14boys were
22:15after.
22:17Nikesha was
22:17talking to
22:18a 20 year
22:19old sailor
22:20named Victor
22:22from Portsmouth
22:23and
22:24our
22:26upbringing
22:27you're taught
22:27you know
22:28you save
22:28yourself
22:29for marriage
22:29it's
22:30hammered in
22:31your head
22:31from day
22:31one.
22:33Her
22:33relationship
22:34with this
22:35guy
22:35it was
22:36online
22:36but
22:37there was
22:38talk
22:38of
22:39you know
22:40physical
22:40things
22:41that in
22:42itself
22:43was not
22:44pleasing to
22:45God
22:45and she
22:46knew I
22:47wouldn't
22:47approve.
22:47those were
22:49just
22:49the rules
22:50but
22:51Nikesha was
22:52thinking that
22:53she did not
22:53have to
22:54follow rules
22:55and it's
22:56not fair.
22:57For Nikesha
22:58this was
22:58probably a
22:59sense of
23:00look at
23:00this forbidden
23:01fruit and
23:03now let me
23:04go try to
23:04taste it.
23:06The attention
23:06she was
23:07getting
23:07from Victor
23:09you know
23:12she loved
23:13it.
23:14I was
23:15hurt
23:15because
23:16Nikesha
23:16was
23:17willing
23:17sinning
23:18over
23:19and
23:19over
23:19again
23:20and
23:21I
23:21didn't
23:21really
23:22want
23:22anything
23:23to do
23:23with
23:23it
23:24because
23:25maybe
23:25now
23:25she's
23:26not
23:26worthy
23:26of
23:27God's
23:27love
23:28so
23:28I
23:28just
23:28stared
23:29clear.
23:32Annie
23:32was not
23:33a voice
23:34of reason
23:34at all.
23:36Annie
23:36encouraged
23:37Nikesha
23:37to continue
23:38to talk
23:39to Victor.
23:41The
23:41Pentecostal
23:42church
23:42population
23:43wanted her
23:44to be
23:44good
23:44and
23:45pure.
23:46A lot
23:46of people
23:47were praying
23:47that God
23:48remove
23:49anything
23:49from her
23:49life
23:50that's
23:50not
23:50good
23:51for her
23:51basically
23:52protection.
23:54She was
23:54going down
23:55a bad
23:56path
23:56and it
23:57was something
23:58that none of
23:58us could
23:59stop.
23:59it was
24:14Sunday night
24:15Memorial Day
24:16weekend
24:17it was
24:18probably
24:18830
24:19my stepdad
24:21gets a call
24:22from Bobby
24:23Nikesha's
24:24stepdad
24:25and
24:26he says
24:27have
24:28you
24:28seen
24:28Vaughn
24:29or
24:29Nikesha?
24:32He said
24:32well I
24:33just got
24:33home
24:33and he
24:34said
24:35Nikesha
24:35and Vaughn
24:35aren't
24:36here
24:36he said
24:37and the
24:37house
24:38is
24:38trashed.
24:41You can
24:42literally
24:42throw a rock
24:43to my
24:43house
24:43from hers
24:44and I'm
24:44thinking
24:45is there
24:45somebody
24:46you know
24:47in the
24:47neighborhood
24:47breaking
24:47into houses?
24:48I was
24:51terrified
24:51because I
24:53mean where
24:53are they?
24:54That Sunday
24:55was a
24:56holiday
24:56weekend
24:57I get
24:57a call
24:58that we
24:58had a
24:58missing
24:59daughter
25:00and a
25:00missing
25:00mother
25:01Nikesha
25:02Waddell
25:03and Vaughn
25:04Thomas
25:04and I
25:06know Bobby
25:06Thomas
25:06because it's
25:07a small
25:07community
25:08I said
25:09I'll be
25:10there as
25:10quick as
25:11I can
25:11when I
25:13got to
25:13the
25:14Thomas
25:14home
25:14walked
25:15inside
25:16and the
25:17house
25:18was totally
25:18ransacked
25:19Bobby
25:20said that
25:21Vaughn's
25:22jewelry
25:22was missing
25:22and he
25:23could not
25:24find
25:24Nikesha
25:25or Vaughn
25:27anywhere
25:27from the
25:29beginning
25:29I said
25:29something's
25:30not right
25:30Most burglars
25:33are not
25:33going to
25:33go in
25:34and just
25:34ransack
25:35the entire
25:35place
25:36they're
25:36going to
25:36take
25:37what
25:37they're
25:37after
25:37and
25:38they're
25:38going
25:38to
25:38get
25:38out
25:38of
25:38there
25:39I
25:39told
25:40Mr.
25:40Thomas
25:40this
25:41looks
25:41staged
25:42When I
25:46first
25:46arrived
25:47on scene
25:47of course
25:48we met
25:48with
25:48Lieutenant
25:49Tuck
25:49and
25:50Bobby
25:50Thomas
25:51Bobby
25:52Thomas
25:53said
25:53that
25:54he
25:54had
25:54gone
25:54out
25:54to
25:55Texas
25:55visit
25:55one
25:55of
25:56his
25:56sons
25:56in
25:56the
25:56middle
25:57of
25:57the
25:57week
25:57prior
25:57to
25:58this
25:58He
25:59said
26:00the last
26:00time
26:00he had
26:01spoke
26:01with Vaughn
26:02was actually
26:02Thursday
26:03night
26:03He tried
26:06to call her
26:06again on
26:06Friday night
26:07and could
26:07not get
26:08a hold
26:08of her
26:09It's been
26:11three days
26:12since anyone
26:13has spoken
26:13to Vaughn
26:14or Nikesha
26:14with every
26:16passing hour
26:17concerns grow
26:18and the chances
26:19of finding them
26:20safe dwindle
26:21And that's when
26:23additional staff
26:24began to respond
26:25to process
26:26the crime scene
26:27Inside the kitchen
26:31area
26:32we spotted
26:34a small
26:35amount of blood
26:37This was
26:42very shocking
26:43At this point
26:44it was
26:44really clear
26:45that the crime
26:46we're investigating
26:47is much more
26:48severe
26:49than a break-in
26:49that looks
26:50staged
26:51A lot of things
26:52were going
26:52through my mind
26:52We had to
26:53figure out
26:54what happened
26:55and I was
26:56open to
26:57every option
26:58from
26:58abduction
26:59to murder
27:00We've got
27:11two missing
27:11people
27:12Nikesha Waddell
27:13and her mother
27:14Vaughn Thomas
27:15Looking at
27:17how the house
27:17had been ransacked
27:19we're thinking
27:20maybe there was
27:21some sort of
27:22violence
27:22within the home
27:23So we've got
27:24to look into
27:25Mr. Thomas
27:26We asked
27:28if there had
27:29been any
27:30arguments
27:30between
27:31them two
27:32He told us
27:32they had been
27:33a good home
27:34They had a
27:34really good
27:35foundation
27:36While the
27:37Thomas' marriage
27:37is solid
27:38Bobby explains
27:40the relationship
27:41between Vaughn
27:41and her daughter
27:42Nikesha
27:43has been on
27:44thin ice
27:44for months
27:45In spring of
27:472004
27:48Vaughn learned
27:49about Nikesha's
27:50relationships
27:51with a lot
27:51of adult men
27:52online
27:53and she was
27:54really appalled
27:55and horrified
27:56because Nikesha
27:57was talking
27:58about sex
27:59This was not
28:00the behavior
28:01that she expected
28:02of her 14-year-old
28:03daughter
28:03who she had
28:04raised in the church
28:05As a result
28:06Nikesha and Vaughn
28:07are fighting
28:08almost all of the time
28:09Vaughn felt
28:11that the whole
28:12situation was
28:13pure evil
28:14Nikesha was
28:17on the computer
28:18a lot
28:18with these
28:19men
28:20at an early age
28:21and that's
28:22very dangerous
28:22We see cases
28:24all the time
28:25where these
28:25young 13
28:26and 14-year-old
28:27girls build
28:28these relationships
28:29online
28:29with men
28:30and they end
28:31up getting abducted
28:32end up getting
28:33raped
28:34end up getting
28:34killed
28:35I said I gotta
28:36look at the big
28:37picture
28:37Bobby turned
28:38over Nikesha's
28:39computer to
28:40our investigative
28:41team
28:41On Nikesha's
28:43computer
28:43investigators
28:44discover her
28:45virtual life
28:46assassin suite
28:47We had developed
28:50additional information
28:51that Nikesha
28:52had started
28:53an online
28:53relationship
28:54with a guy
28:55named Victor
28:56He was 20
28:59she's 14 years old
29:02the math
29:03just does not
29:04math like it should
29:05Nikesha
29:07was lying to
29:08Victor
29:08about her age
29:10and appearance
29:10She was telling him
29:12she was older
29:13she was acting
29:15older
29:15and Victor
29:16believed it
29:17Nikesha
29:19knew that
29:20wine was a sin
29:21she knew it was wrong
29:23On top of that
29:25she told him
29:26where she was living
29:28Victor
29:31may have actually
29:32showed up
29:32and done something
29:33with Nikesha
29:34and her mother
29:35I had his last name
29:37and I did
29:38eventually make
29:39contact with Victor
29:40Victor tells
29:42investigators
29:42he was just
29:43enjoying a little
29:44online banter
29:45but Nikesha
29:46convinced herself
29:47they were planning
29:48a future together
29:49She was living
29:54a fantasy life
29:56online
29:57with this guy
29:58but I didn't know
29:59that she thought
30:00it was real
30:01In her mind
30:03he was the one
30:05and she was
30:07you know
30:07going to quit school
30:08and move up there
30:10to Portsmouth
30:11and they were
30:12going to live
30:13happily ever after
30:13According to
30:16what was told
30:17to me
30:17by Victor
30:18On Friday
30:21a friend
30:22drove Nikesha
30:23six hours down
30:24there
30:24to Portsmouth
30:25and she finally
30:27met Victor
30:28and it did not
30:30go her way
30:30He said that
30:33they got in
30:33a big argument
30:34and she hollered
30:36at Victor
30:37He said
30:38he made her leave
30:38when he found
30:39out her age
30:40The whole house
30:42of cards
30:42for Nikesha
30:43ultimately fell
30:44because Victor
30:46is not expecting
30:48a 14-year-old girl
30:49In this one horse town
30:56police lights
30:57don't go unnoticed
30:58and while detectives
31:00continue speaking
31:01with Victor
31:02a neighbor calls
31:03the Thomas home
31:04Turns out to be
31:06a neighbor
31:07that Nikesha
31:08goes to high school
31:09with by the name
31:10of Stephanie
31:10I said
31:14I'm looking for
31:14Nikesha
31:15She said
31:18I did see
31:19Nikesha
31:20Friday afternoon
31:21after school
31:22She gave me
31:23the directions
31:23to a mobile home
31:24where Annie lived
31:25approximately
31:26three or four miles
31:27down the road
31:28I didn't know
31:29what I was
31:29getting myself into
31:30I knocked
31:32on the door
31:33of the mobile home
31:34to identify myself
31:35and a man
31:37came to the door
31:38He told me
31:39he was Annie's father
31:40I said
31:41I'm looking for Nikesha
31:43I'm looking for her mother
31:44Do you have any idea
31:45where they could be?
31:46He invited me in
31:52and led me to
31:54the back bedroom
31:55and Annie was there
31:59I didn't see
32:01Vaughn anywhere
32:02I saw Nikesha
32:04on the bed
32:05The lights were
32:07very, very dim
32:08and I could barely
32:09see her face
32:10I didn't know
32:12if she was
32:12still breathing
32:13We know that evil exists
32:17We see it
32:18in the cases
32:19that we work
32:20I think absolutely
32:21the devil had a hand
32:23in this crime
32:24I was at Annie Belcher's
32:31mobile home
32:32and I walked back
32:34to the bedroom
32:35and I found Nikesha
32:37on the bed
32:38and she got up
32:43I identified myself
32:45to her
32:46and Vaughn
32:48wasn't there
32:49I said
32:49I found you
32:50but I'm looking
32:51for your mother
32:52where is she at?
32:54and she looked at me
32:55and said
32:56she's dead
32:58I killed her
33:01and that floored me
33:06and I said
33:07can you say that
33:07again please?
33:09and she said it again
33:10and I said
33:11she's serious
33:12Annie and Nikesha
33:24were taken back
33:25to the sheriff's office
33:25where we can get
33:26a statement
33:27from both of them
33:29when I interviewed
33:31Annie
33:31she said
33:32Nikesha called her
33:33on the phone
33:34that Friday morning
33:35and told her
33:36she had gotten
33:37into an argument
33:37with her mother
33:38she said
33:40that Nikesha
33:41had gone
33:41to her house
33:43because she
33:44needed a friend
33:45naturally you're
33:46going to go
33:46to your best friend
33:47and you're going
33:47to talk about
33:48these situations
33:49when Nikesha
33:51said that her mom
33:52was dead
33:52Annie was really
33:54taken back
33:54was really shocked
33:56she says
33:57she had no prior
33:58knowledge of
33:59the murder
33:59whatsoever
34:00in a separate room
34:02at the Wythe
34:03County Sheriff's Office
34:04a stoic Nikesha
34:06pens her confession
34:07Vaughn
34:09figured out
34:10that Nikesha
34:11was talking
34:13to older men
34:13online
34:14Nikesha told me
34:17they'd argued
34:18all week
34:18and they started
34:22arguing again
34:23Vaughn left
34:24to go to work
34:24Nikesha decided
34:26I'm going to
34:26skip school
34:27Vaughn
34:28came home
34:29around 12 o'clock
34:32and an argument
34:33ensued
34:34according to
34:38Nikesha
34:39something in her
34:41snapped
34:41and she
34:42took the knife
34:43which was
34:44on the kitchen
34:45counter
34:46and stabbed
34:47Vaughn in the
34:48shoulder
34:48Vaughn then
34:51retreated
34:52out the back
34:53door
34:54I said
34:59what did you
35:00do then
35:00she said
35:01and I stabbed
35:02her several
35:02times
35:03to make sure
35:04she was dead
35:04she looked at
35:06me
35:07straightened
35:07eyes
35:07and told me
35:08that
35:08she didn't
35:09show any
35:10emotion
35:10I've been
35:12an investigator
35:13for 38 years
35:14I see evil
35:15I do
35:16but I'd have
35:17never had
35:18a 14 year old
35:19girl killing
35:20her mother
35:21but sometimes
35:23the devil
35:23is in the
35:24details
35:25and detectives
35:28notice an
35:28inconsistency
35:29in Nikesha's
35:30statement
35:31Nikesha's
35:33statement
35:33was all
35:34about her
35:35and then
35:36there was
35:37this transition
35:38of pronouns
35:38she transitions
35:40from saying
35:41I to saying
35:42we
35:42I knew
35:44someone
35:44had to
35:45help
35:45Nikesha
35:46and the
35:46only one
35:46left
35:47was
35:47Annie
35:47so
35:50the second
35:51interview
35:51with Annie
35:52I said
35:52I just
35:53want to
35:53get to
35:53the truth
35:54eventually
35:56she admitted
35:57that she
35:58was at
35:58Vaughn Thomas'
36:00home
36:00the day
36:00she was
36:01killed
36:01Annie
36:03watched
36:04Nikesha
36:04make the
36:05final blows
36:06to take
36:07her breath
36:08away
36:08she just
36:10stood back
36:10and watched
36:11she said
36:13I was just
36:14trying to
36:14help
36:14Fran out
36:15I said
36:17you're under
36:17arrest
36:17Nikesha
36:21tried to
36:21make it
36:21sound like
36:22that this
36:22was just
36:23a spur
36:23of the
36:23moment
36:24impulse
36:24crime
36:25but
36:28when we
36:28executed
36:29a search
36:29warrant
36:29we located
36:31a large
36:31hunting knife
36:32that had
36:33apparent
36:33blood
36:34we found
36:35notes
36:36and we
36:37found
36:37a diagram
36:38sketch
36:38of Vaughn
36:39Thomas'
36:40residence
36:40and the
36:41door
36:42that she
36:42normally
36:42comes in
36:43from work
36:44was marked
36:45they actually
36:46put a lot
36:47of thought
36:47into how
36:48they were
36:48going to
36:49carry out
36:49this crime
36:50Nikesha
36:53she wanted
36:54to live
36:54free of
36:54her mother
36:55and she
36:55wanted to
36:56make her
36:56life with
36:57this guy
36:57named
36:58Vic
36:58Vaughn
37:00was on
37:00the ground
37:01still warm
37:02and the
37:03first thing
37:04that Nikesha
37:04thinks
37:05is to get
37:06in a car
37:06and to
37:07go see
37:07her boyfriend
37:08across the
37:09state
37:10and Annie
37:11was there
37:12to assist
37:12we were
37:14able to
37:14follow up
37:15with Victor
37:16we learned
37:17that he
37:17had nothing
37:18to do
37:18with this
37:19crime
37:19Nikesha
37:20now has
37:21a long
37:21ride home
37:22from Portsmouth
37:23to consider
37:23the fact
37:24that her
37:24fantasy
37:25relationship
37:26has now
37:26broken up
37:27and she
37:28has a
37:29dead parent
37:30waiting
37:30for her
37:31at home
37:31Nikesha
37:33tell police
37:34about their
37:35attempt
37:35to wash
37:36away
37:36this
37:36mortal
37:36sin
37:37with their
37:38own
37:38holy
37:38trinity
37:38a shovel
37:41a mop
37:42and bleach
37:43before staging
37:44the scene
37:45to look like
37:45a break-in
37:46we're processing
37:49the crime scene
37:49when lieutenant
37:50tuck
37:50calls one
37:52of our
37:52cell phones
37:52and tells us
37:54to walk
37:55to the back
37:55right hand
37:56corner
37:56of the yard
37:57we could see
38:01that they
38:01had buried
38:01Vaughn
38:02in a
38:02shallow
38:03grave
38:03Nikesha
38:04was telling
38:05the truth
38:05there was
38:0943 stab
38:10winners
38:10in Vaughn
38:11times
38:1143
38:12there was
38:17at least
38:1842 times
38:20that you
38:20could have
38:21stopped
38:21Nikesha
38:23decided that
38:23her mom
38:24was the
38:25enemy
38:25she
38:26was once
38:27considered
38:28to be
38:29a perfect
38:29person
38:30but she
38:31could no
38:31longer
38:32live up
38:33to that
38:33standard
38:34she wants
38:35to
38:36get away
38:37from the
38:38church
38:39and Vaughn's
38:40upbringings
38:41and do
38:42what she
38:42wants to
38:43do
38:43and it
38:44got to
38:44the point
38:45that
38:46Nikesha
38:46couldn't
38:46take
38:46anymore
38:47Nikesha
38:48was full
38:49of rage
38:50but I
38:51do not
38:51feel that
38:51Nikesha
38:52would have
38:54ever done
38:54something like
38:55this had
38:55she not
38:56met Annie
38:57you could
38:59just tell
39:00that Annie
39:00had more
39:01of a deviant
39:02mentality
39:02than what
39:03Nikesha
39:03had
39:04I think
39:04Annie
39:05made her
39:06think that
39:06all this
39:07could go
39:07away
39:07if she
39:08would just
39:08listen
39:08to her
39:09Annie
39:11had a
39:11major
39:12influence
39:13on
39:13Nikesha
39:13and Annie
39:14was jealous
39:15of Nikesha's
39:16home life
39:16Nikesha
39:18had
39:18you know
39:19whatever
39:19she wanted
39:20and
39:20everything
39:21she needed
39:22and
39:22I think
39:23Annie
39:24was jealous
39:24of that
39:25and
39:25maybe
39:27thought
39:29well
39:29if I
39:30can't
39:30have
39:30it
39:31I
39:31don't
39:31want
39:31her
39:31to
39:31either
39:32because
39:34of the
39:34severity
39:35of the
39:35crime
39:36both
39:37of these
39:37juveniles
39:38would be
39:38tried
39:39as adults
39:40but
39:41in the
39:41end
39:42plea
39:42deals
39:42were
39:43reached
39:43where
39:44Nikesha
39:44was charged
39:45with first
39:45degree
39:45murder
39:46she was
39:47sentenced
39:47to 70
39:48years
39:48with 35
39:49years
39:49suspended
39:50Annie
39:51was charged
39:52with second
39:52degree
39:53murder
39:53and she
39:54was sentenced
39:54to 15
39:55years
39:56and neither
39:58one of them
39:59showed
39:59any remorse
40:00I thought
40:04we were
40:05close

40:06you know
40:07if

40:09between
40:10her and
40:11her mom
40:11was so

40:31those
40:32commandments
40:32were
40:32broken
40:33to this
40:34day
40:34I still
40:34think
40:35the
40:36devil
40:36got into
40:37her soul
40:37and in
40:38the minutes
40:38that it
40:39took
40:39to kill

40:40something
40:41inside
40:41her
40:41possessed
40:42her
40:42if I
40:46was to
40:46speak
40:46to
40:46Nikesha
40:47I would
40:47tell her
40:48I forgive
40:48her
40:48and that
40:51God
40:51forgives
40:52her
40:52as long
40:53as she
40:54asked
40:54him
40:55to
40:55and
40:57that I
40:58hope
40:59and pray
41:00that
41:02she
41:02lives a
41:04life
41:04that her
41:04mom
41:05would be
41:05proud
41:05of
41:24and
41:24to
41:25her
41:26and
41:26her
41:26and
41:26her
41:27and
41:27her
41:28and
41:28her
