12:33We had a detective
13:03He was clearly traumatized
13:33When we had a detective
14:03in this homicide
14:33in San Bernardino, they had a
14:35San Bernardino, they had a
14:43and told me that he told me
14:45told me that the daughter of the
14:49front steps of her apartment.
14:50She saw two men come up the stairs with guns in their hands and it scared the bejesus out of her.
14:59She yelled to her mother, shut the door, shut the door, shut the door.
15:07The mother ran to the door to try and shut it.
15:09After the suspects entered, they shot mom in the leg.
15:17Dad grabbed the chair, tried to hit one of the suspects, get shot.
15:25The grandfather's there, he gets shot in the head.
15:27They're both dead.
15:29The daughter said that the only way that mom survived was because the sirens that were in the background.
15:35They knew they'd been had and they got out of there as fast as they could.
15:45We started to realize that this wasn't just one lone individual that was committing these crimes.
16:03It was a group of individuals that were acting in a pack mentality.
16:09and they were acting together to target these unfortunate Vietnamese families.
16:18Based on the information we were building from these two cases,
16:21I realized that these guys are progressing at a much more violent rate than we expected.
16:32These guys, if they didn't get stopped, God knows how many more people they would kill.
16:38We needed that information.
16:40And the only witness was Dennis, a three-year-old.
16:43So we knew that we needed to try and get what he saw and what he felt.
17:08Soon after, this family had been murdered. Dennis was physically recovering, also emotionally recovering.
17:09So there was a police psychologist who was working with the boy to get him to understand what had happened.
17:13and be able to communicate what he knew to police investigators.
17:18Dennis had drawn some pictures.
17:19Dennis had drawn some pictures.

18:23His mom had always told him that monsters aren't real.
18:31But that was the night he found out she was wrong.
18:36He crawled out of bed
18:37and peeked into the hallway.
18:41Sous-titrage Société Radio-Canada
19:11We couldn't identify anybody,
19:39but Dennis remembered seeing men with guns.
19:43He actually pointed to one of the investigators' head on their belt.
19:49Well, he said there were shots fired.
19:50Dennis also told us they didn't even cover their faces.
20:07They didn't have any masks or anything on.
20:12At one point, one of the detectives asked Dennis
20:32if the killers spoke English like the detective was speaking to him.
20:40That's when Dennis responded,
20:42they speak like me.
20:45Which clued the detectives in that the killers were speaking Vietnamese.
20:49When Dennis recognized the language that one of the killers was speaking,
20:55they knew that it was a member of the community, not an outsider.
20:59When we got that information, that made a big difference for us.
21:03Still, we just didn't know who or where they were from.
21:06As the investigation progressed,
21:12one thing I thought was important for us
21:14was to find out more about the jade necklace taken off the mother.
21:20Trinh had a jade necklace,
21:22which in their culture is generally seen as bringing protection.
21:25Police realized they needed to break the silence in the community,
21:50so they decided to release more details of the killings
21:53and also a $5,000 reward for information about what had happened.
21:58$5,000, especially to members of that community, was a lot.
22:01It was not a rich community.
22:04Investigators are asking for any information or leads
22:07surrounding the Wynn family murders in San Bernardino.
22:10Authorities now believe the shootings may be linked to another family murder,
22:14which occurred just weeks before in Sacramento.
22:23We got so many phone calls, I mean, we were inundated.
22:28We had to have detectives, just take the phone calls
22:30and go through them and see what was useful and what was not.
22:34We needed a big break because they killed Grandpa and Dad
22:39and shot Mom in the leg in Sacramento.
22:42And then they killed an entire family in San Bernardino
22:45and left a three-year-old alive.
22:47So it was just getting worse.
22:49Detectives are searching for the killers responsible
23:02for murdering two Vietnamese families,
23:05one in San Bernardino
23:06and another four weeks earlier in Sacramento.
23:10Investigators decided to release more details of the killings
23:13and also a $5,000 reward for information about what had happened.
23:18That decision resulted in a bunch of leads being called in.
23:23We were given a name of this guy in Seattle, Washington
23:26that had the jade and diamond necklace was taken off the mother.
23:32The lead also provided me with a drawing
23:35of exactly what that pendant looked like.
23:38But we had no idea at this point if this guy is our killer.
23:41We did not know what was going to happen next.
23:47We went to the house.
24:03We told him that you're either going to give us what we want
24:07or we'll get a search warrant
24:09and we're going to charge you with five counts
24:11of first-degree murder in San Bernardino, California.
24:13After we told him that, he was scared to death.
24:18He told me he knew of absolutely no murders.
24:21He pulled out the pendant.
24:24I said, bingo.
24:27This is it. We got it.
24:28It was exactly like the drawing bleed had given me.
24:32He eventually told him who had given him the jade necklace.
24:37His name was Run Chun.
24:39He said Run Chun had gone to Seattle to see a girlfriend.
24:44When he got there, he realized he was out of money
24:46and couldn't get back home.
24:48He had the necklace with him.
24:50He offered to trade the pendant for cash
24:53so he could drive home.
24:56He, like many others, was terrified of Run Chun
24:59and he probably knew what he was capable of doing.
25:02Like the smearing of the toothpaste in the nostrils.
25:06Torturing and terrifying the victims.
25:09So we were looking for him
25:11and really worried about where he was going to go.
25:13As we were searching for Run Chun,
25:29I get a phone call from Spokane PD Homicide.
25:35And they're telling me about a home invasion murder.
25:38It was another Vietnamese family.
25:40And I was kind of shocked.
25:41I asked if they could tell me what type of gun was used
25:44and they said, a Glock.
25:46And I lit up and I asked them to contact their criminalist,
25:52to contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff's criminalist,
25:55see if they can do a comparison.
25:58This was two weeks before the shootings in Sacramento
26:02and a month before the Nguyen family killings in San Bernardino.
26:07Spokane PD told me they killed mom and dad in front of two kids.
26:11We had a five-year-old and a two-year-old
26:12that had survived the incident.
26:14We had two more victims.
26:18The brutality was just beyond belief.
26:25He had to be stopped.
26:31Spokane PD interviewed Joe Hagan,
26:33the son of the victims who was five years old at the time.
26:39Being five, this victim was able to speak a little bit more
26:43and provide some crucial information for this overall investigation.
26:51During the incident in Spokane, Joe Hagan was in his room.
26:55And he heard loud banging.
27:04Little Joe got up to poke his head out of his room.
27:12And he was able to see that there were two men.
27:17One was a bigger man and one was smaller.
27:20He saw guns.
27:23They were black and shiny.
27:26He saw his parents.
27:29And their hands were tied together.
27:34Joe saw his mom wanting to help her.
27:39And as he started to get closer,
27:42he saw his mom's eyes get wide.
27:44And she started shaking her head.
27:46This scared him.
27:47He backed off.
27:48He heard loud noises.
27:56Gunshots.
28:01And ran behind the couch.
28:08And grabbed the pillow.
28:10And he put it over his face.
28:13Because he was afraid.
28:14He just continued to hold that pillow over his face.
28:19Because it was so loud.
28:23He sat there until sunrise.
28:25And that's when he went to his neighbor's house to go get help.
28:36The detectives placed this series of photographs out for Joe to try to identify who one of these suspects were.
28:44And Joe was able to point at one of these photographs and identify the big man that had hurt his dad.
28:55That big man turned out to be the same man that had ripped the necklace off of Dennis' mom.
29:03Ron Chon.
29:03Ron Chon.
29:09There's no doubt in my mind that the main man was Ron Chon.
29:13After getting the information on Spokane that occurred on July 10th of 1995, we found out that the ballistics did match what happened on July 27th in Sacramento.
29:26And those matched the ballistics from August 9th in San Bernardino.
29:29So we definitely connected all three cases together at that point.
29:33But we still didn't have any other named suspects.
29:39I called Peter Lee.
29:40He told me that he would put his nose out there and see what he could come up with.
29:44Then I got a phone call from Peter and he asked if I could come by his office.
30:10Peter Lee told me that there was a young lady that I needed to talk to that had information about the home invasion on Elm Street.
30:17And this young lady named Carol Tran.
30:22Carol Tran had lived about a block away from the Wynn family.
30:26We ended up eventually finding her at her residence.
30:32The person who opened the door was Nancy Tran, Carol's mother.
30:37Two had looked inside the house and saw Dennis inside covered in blood.
30:44We picked Carol Tran up and brought her to the station.
30:47She was definitely scared.
30:52She was very reluctant to tell us the whole story.
30:55But we needed her information.
30:59Can you tell me what happened?
31:00When she started telling us what had happened, I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
31:12When we interviewed Carol Tran, she was very reluctant to tell us the whole story.
31:32But she knew Ranshan and his gang, known as TRG.
31:37TRG, or Tiny Rascals gang, was a violent immigrant gang back in the mid-90s.
31:46We found out that Run Chun spent some time in the Long Beach area, which is where TRG formed.
31:51And that's how TRG ended up in San Bernardino.
31:55Carol Tran was not really a member of the gang.
31:57She was, I would call her an associate.
31:59She proved to be the ultimate source of information.
32:21She identified, by name, everyone involved in that incident that night.
32:28Vin Scrappy Tran, CJ Evans, and their leader, Run Chun.
32:34And then I got out and knocked on the door.
32:47And then I got out and knocked on the door.
33:17And they said, they heard through the neighborhood that the Wynn family had jewelry and they had money.
33:24Run Chun, New Asians, sometimes keep their money and jewelry hidden in pots and pans because they don't trust banks.
33:32Carol told authorities that she did not believe that there was going to be a murder that night,
33:36that it was only going to be a home invasion robbery.
33:39She was stupid enough to be involved with these people.
33:42She didn't commit the crimes other than knocking on the door and getting them dealt in the door.
33:57I got a phone call from Sacramento Sheriff.
34:02They had arrested Run Chun, Vin Scrappy Tran, and the other guy was CJ Evans.
34:18When we got back up to Sacramento Sheriff's Office, the first interview we did was with CJ Evans.
34:24And he laid out the whole scenario of everything that happened in San Bernardino.
34:30Do you know about that incident?
34:33I need to have that one more time for me too, just to kind of like lock that down for me so fast.
34:38He was involved in what happened.
34:41Will you be present when that shooting took place?
34:45When you did?
34:46Okay.
34:47He told me that Carol Tran, Run Chun, Scrappy, Vin Tran, and CJ himself all went to the house on Elm Street.
34:57The family told them initially they didn't have any money.
35:27That's when Run Chun grabbed a knife and started torturing Dad, cutting on his neck to make him give up whatever he had.
35:37Stop!
35:37I didn't even know for myself what happened in the house.
35:44One thing I'm really curious about was the toothpaste.
35:47I think that the little boy probably did it.
35:52Because I never was good.
35:54If you're trying to tell me you think the little boy did that, I don't think so.
35:58Because I know.
35:59All right.
36:00Because I know for the fact that I didn't do it and that I know nothing about it.
36:06You told me you saw Shaka shoot Dad.
36:08You saw him shoot the boy next to Dad.
36:12Right?
36:12I was just seeing him shoot Dad.
36:14And who got my mom?
36:16Who shot her?
36:18Did you say somebody was shooting in that direction?
36:22Scrappy.
36:22Good Lord.
36:25I see him start showing me about the heart.
36:28CJ's son shown told him to go back outside.
36:31So he took no part in what was going on inside as far as the shootings went.
36:37How much time do you think you spent in the house yourself?
36:41One more than nine and ten minutes.
36:44What's the total length of time everybody was there?
36:47One and ten minutes.
36:47After we'd spoken with CJ Evans.
36:56My partner and I sat down with Ron Chellman.
36:59The police needed a monster to speak to them.
37:03The leader, Ron Chellman.
37:04Okay, so you're here in Sacramento now.
37:06It's you, Scrappy.
37:08CJ.
37:09And CJ.
37:09Yes.
37:10Okay.
37:10Now I want to kind of go into some events that occurred back in the second week of August.
37:18Okay, around August 9th, August 10th.
37:20You know, we believe that you have knowledge about the family more than what you say you do.
37:24What family?
37:27People that you know, well, they say that you were involved with them in those shootings.
37:31wouldn't talk, didn't care, had nothing to say.
37:41I know for a fact that down at this house on Elm Street, Carol went to the door, and three guys followed Carol up and stood off to the side behind the bushes.
37:50And I know two guys had guns, and the first person, everybody wanted to say, one of them LSU.
37:57Yeah, I figured that.
37:59Okay.
38:00He was very cocky, very smart-ass type personality.
38:04All these people involved know that they're going to get some type of punishment for what they did.
38:12And the only one who was involved in it, and I believe you were, okay, who hasn't admitted any involvement, like you're the angel, okay,
38:20Okay, it's you.
38:23So I'm supposed to stand up and say, okay, I killed all these people.
38:28No, you're supposed to tell us what you did and who you killed, or if you shot anybody, okay?
38:33You're not taking care of business.
38:35You're letting their story lock you up, okay?
38:39Oh, their story's already locking me up.
38:42I don't see that.
38:43I tried to explain what he was looking at with multiple murder cases, life in prison, and he just kind of looked me in the face and said, I'm not worried.
38:55I knew this was going nowhere, and I'd never get nothing out of him.
38:59And I'm thinking to myself, why do I not want to reach across the table and beat the living out of him?
39:04Because this guy's got me pissed.
39:07And I knew that that was the point where I had to back out and say enough's enough.
39:15Carol Tran was charged with five counts of first-degree murder.
39:20She agreed to testify on a plea deal of five counts of second-degree murder to be ran concurrent.
39:26Was sentenced to 15 years to 50 years.
39:28Scrappy pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to 50 years to life.
39:37CJ pled to five counts of first-degree murder, 25 to life.
39:41During the trial, Bong Chun walked out arrogant, cocky, like nothing could touch him.
40:00I got called to the stand because obviously I was first on scene.
40:03And I gave my story, got a little emotional on the scene.
40:08I was staring at the face of evil.
40:11The jury found
40:14Run Chun guilty, and they came back with a death sentence.
40:18He's still on death row.
40:22Once we left, I went home, and the first thing I did is hug my boys.
40:25Both of them.
40:27You want to think that something like that would never happen, but it happened.
40:34You look at your family, and you think, what would you do if that happened to your family?
40:41Some family come here for a better life.
40:44They had no idea that would happen to the family.
40:49It's heartbreaking.
40:53To this day, I still wake up in the middle of the night thinking about the house on Elm Street.
40:57And I've seen a lot of murders, but I'd never seen anything like that since, and I'm thankful for that.
41:04When I arrived at the house on Elm Street, something wasn't right.
41:16The victim was naked as can be.
41:19He had something very unusual on the body.
41:23They found our Uncle Dad.
41:25It was devastating.
41:26It was like it had become its own urban legend.
