00:00Brazil launched Friday a global fund to protect tropical forests at the United Nations Climate Change Conference Cup 30 and called for a plan to overcome dependence on fossil fuels.
00:23The Third Social Summit of Latin American and Caribbean Peoples opened in Colombia.
00:30And in Palestine authorities warned that one in five children in Gaza have not received essential vaccines.
00:44Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Dele Soos Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:00Brazil launched Friday a global fund to protect tropical forests at the United Nations Climate Change Conference Cup 30 and called for a plan to overcome dependence on fossil fuels.
01:14The Brazilian president said that the fund is aimed at preserving more than one billion hectares of forest with an investment of up to one hundred and twenty five million dollars.
01:23The Asselba described the initiative as unprecedented, stressed that forests are worth more standing than fell and that the countries of the global south will be the protagonists.
01:33During his speech, the Brazilian president blamed the conflict in Ukraine for the reopening of coal mines and criticized the expense in producing weapons in the context of global warming.
01:42On Friday, the climate summit in Brazil came to an end. This event which preceded COP 30 will serve as a guide for the negotiators who will be meeting starting next week.
01:58Once again, the global south made its presence felt in species calling for a more just world.
02:02The world's largest rainforest is the epicenter of debates on how to confront the climate crisis in the coming days.
02:18A cleaning assistant at COP 30 is one of the nearly 50 million people who live in the Amazon.
02:25The Amazon needs to live. The Amazon needs to breathe. That is what I think. I hope everything goes well at this COP.
02:32COP 30 negotiations will officially begin next Monday, but the climate summit, a precursor to the conference that brings together representatives from more than 140 countries in Bel-Am-du-Paar, has already resulted in a first concrete action, the creation of the rainforests forever fund.
02:55It is a global financing architecture to protect the tropical forests of more than 70 countries around the world, which will begin operating at COP 30 with the contribution of resources.
03:09At the closing of the climate summit, countries in the global south, once again raise their voices to denounce the actions of an economic system that destroys humanity and nature.
03:22A voracious imperialism hungry for oil and resources, which instead of correcting itself to curb climate change has become more ferocious and inhumane.
03:35This imperialism does not send vessels to the Caribbean to help repair the damage caused by climate change, but to threaten, besiege and plunder the natural resources of our sovereign nations, as is the case in Venezuela.
03:47This Friday was marked by the debate on the energy transition. For it to be effective, a change in priorities is needed from the richest countries and support for the poorest nations.
04:05Spending twice as much on weapons as we do on climate action is paving the way toward climate apocalypse. It is essential to combat all forms of energy poverty.
04:20We are also strengthening our efforts in the area of renewable energies, especially solar energy, to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Your Excellencies, these national efforts require predictable and fair financial support.
04:35According to the International Energy Agency, fossil fuels still account for 81.5% of primary energy. In this context, 2 billion people do not have adequate fuel for cooking, and 200 million children attend schools without energy. COP30 should both advance the energy transition and democratize access to this resource.

05:38Nicaraguan commerce prepares for the year-end season, one of the busiest for sales, reflecting
05:46the constant dynamism of the national economy.
05:51People have been coming to the market to buy, as I told you, since September.
05:56So that indicates to us that the economy is doing well, and I think it's been improving
06:00and will continue to improve.
06:06At the end of October, people already start buying.
06:09Right now, what they're looking for the most are decorations for the schools, but after
06:12this, people start looking for lights, garlands, and curtains, which they use for the Grider
06:16A Celebration.
06:21Yes, in fact, we Nicaraguanes are already prepared to come and buy, and to anticipate our businesses
06:31and have a huge variety for all our customers.
06:37We have sold a lot.
06:38Customers come from Honduras, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.
06:48According to the Central Bank of Nicaragua, the economy is expected to maintain steady growth
06:56between 3% and 4% throughout 2025.
06:59The Commercial Sector Project sales of $158 million in the last quarter of the year, a figure
07:06that reflects confidence and the strengthening of economic activity, driven by the efforts
07:10of Nicaraguan entrepreneurs and merchants.
07:17We have a projection of around $116 million to $129,000.
07:23Since last year, we were at about $105 million for $117,000.
07:28And I believe that with all the logistics capacity we have, with the merchants being prepared,
07:32and the models that our good government has been providing, that's why we're seeing this
07:35boost today.
07:36We've also started selling online.
07:42Alongside the economic dynamism in Nicaragua, the country has been illuminated with a Christmas
07:59atmosphere.
08:00Families are enjoying the decorations and spaces filled with love, unity, and hope.
08:07Yes, there are quite a few new things, in fact, and everything is really beautiful.
08:13This transmits peace, joy, yes, peace, joy, and well, those who enjoy it, are the ones who
08:19matter.
08:20Ellos son lo importante lo que lo disfrutan.
08:22Happiness, Christmas, you can already feel the Christmas spirit, it feels good, prosperous
08:29and blessed, the peace that only our good government has given us.
08:34In this season of high economic dynamism and Christmas spirit, Nicaraguans reaffirman
08:42their desire to continue living in joy and peace, strengthening the bonds of unity, and
08:47hope that characterize families across the country.

10:00of the United States in the Caribbean and are demanding justice for the murder of fellow citizens.
10:07Also in Colombia, on Friday, families and social leaders from La Guajira have condemned
10:16the operations of the United States in the Caribbean and are demanding justice for the
10:19murder of fellow citizens.
10:21The so-called anti-narcotics operations by the Department of Defense in the Caribbean
10:24and Pacific waters have been labeled as illegal by the United Nations and the International
10:28Criminal Court.
10:29In this regard, the governments of the Caribbean, Venezuela and Colombia have firmly rejected
10:34its deployment which violates our international legality.
10:37In this context, Colombia's public television broadcast the testimony of the family of Alejandro
10:42Carranza, one of the fishermen killed, in an airstrike ordered by President Donald Trump
10:47against a small fishing boat demanding transparency and justice for the extrajudicial executions
10:51perpetrated by the United States in the Caribbean waters.
11:00In Paraguay, the Frente Guazú coalition holds a national plenarization with the aim of defining
11:05political strategies for the 2026 municipal elections.
11:09On Saturday, dozens of supporters and political leaders, including former President Fernando
11:13Lugo, gathered in the capital city of Asunción to establish the coalition strategy for the
11:18upcoming election.
11:19In this regard, Frente Guazú assures that it is in the process of restructuring, reorganizing
11:24and reactivating its bases throughout the national territory.
11:37To have a general analysis of the government's situation and the engagement we can carry out
11:42as a social movement and political parties.
11:45The second objective is the re-articulation process that we have been carrying out in different
11:49bases of the front in the different departments.
11:51to clarify the strategy and articulation of social movements and political parties.
11:56The third objective has to do with 2026 and our electoral strategy for the municipal elections.
12:02How we, as the 1-2 front, are going to unify our forces and open the debate against other
12:07political forces.

12:29and providing them with tools for productive development to be heard and funded.

12:38the projects approved and prioritized during the youth popular consultation.

13:54Welcome back.
13:55In the United States, the federal government shutdown continues and while Democrats and Republicans
14:13failed to reach an agreement, disadvantaged communities are doing everything they can to
14:18put food on the table as food stamps are still being withheld in violation of a federal judge's
14:22order.
14:23A correspondent in New York, Henry Camelo, gives us details about this difficult situation.
14:28At the top of the power structure in Washington, members of the Democratic and Republican parties
14:37continue to disagree about the national budget.
14:40Miles away from the capital, entire communities are still not receiving food stamps from the
14:45SNAP program, despite President Trump's claim that they would be paid in part.
14:51For Andrea, this is yet another life from Donald Trump.
14:54Among our acquaintances, friends, and co-workers here, we haven't heard of anyone receiving
15:01anything, at least I haven't been paid anything.
15:03And, well, it's only a few days and, as I say, we have to find a way to survive.
15:09And in search of ways to survive in these low temperatures, hundreds of families who have
15:19not received food stamps form long lines at food banks, even bringing their young children
15:26with them to take a meal home.
15:32I saw the line and wanted to join it to seek what others are seeking.
15:36Well, not very good, but we have to keep going.
15:43According to the pro-immigrant organization, there are currently 1.5 million people in New
15:48York who do not have enough to eat three times a day.
15:51Pedro RodrÃguez, director of this organization, attests to this.
15:59This government still has $43 million dollars sitting there waiting to be used, which, by
16:04the way, if the government shuts down, and they have that money here, they don't want
16:08to use it.
16:09Why?
16:10Because they want children to go hungry, they want senior citizens to go hungry, they want
16:14families to go hungry.
16:15Is that okay?
16:16No, it's very wrong.
16:18They put that money aside to do it, to use it for this, and they don't want to use it.
16:22They just don't want to use it.
16:24It's like if a mother said, no, I'm not going to feed my children, I have the money here
16:28in my pocket, and I'm going partying.
16:31That's what they're doing, and it's the saddest thing in the world.
16:41What is sad is that the largest country in the world, the most established democracy,
16:45cannot reach an agreement, overcome the divisions between the two parties to approve a national
16:50budget, the consequences of which we are already seeing.
16:53However, I believe that the result of Tuesday's elections will promote the speeding up of
16:58negotiations and the reaching of some kind of agreement.
17:04And while there is no hunger at the tables of the powerful and no talk of food stamps,
17:11in the other United States, hunger cannot wait.
17:15Would you ever think you would be asking for food at a center like this?
17:21No, no, I never thought the economy would be like this.
17:27Remember, we came from our countries looking for a better economy for our families, a better
17:33opportunity for our families, and that dream that sometimes in our countries, the American
17:38dream is sometimes unfortunately not like that.
17:41We came to live a very different reality, a reality that President Donald Trump insists
17:52on maintaining while he appeals the decision of a federal judge, ordering him to immediately
17:58pay the full amount of food stamps that by law belong to those most in need.
18:04In the United States, a federal judge in Oregon on Friday blocked Donald Trump from deploying
18:17national guard troops to Portland.
18:19This record judge in Oregon, Karen Emergood, a Trump appointee, blocked the deployment of
18:24national guard troops to Portland.
18:26In her final ruling, Emergood determined there was no evidence of widespread violence that
18:30would justify federal intervention.
18:33She found that protests near Portland's Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility were predominantly
18:37peaceful.
18:38Earlier this week, Emergood had already prevented the Trump administration from deploying the
18:43National Guard to Portland, saying that she found no credible evidence that protests
18:47in the city had spiraled out of control.
18:49This is the latest development in a series of legal back and forth involving Portland.
18:54Chicago and other U.S. cities, as the Trump administration has sought to federalize and deploy the National
18:59National Guard to Coal Protests.
19:00Palestine warns that one in five Ghazan children have not received a censure in the
19:01National Guard to Coal Protests.
19:06In the absence of vaccines for children, the United Nations has launched a vaccination campaign
19:08that aims to reach 44,000 children.
19:09In the absence of vaccines for children, the United Nations has launched a vaccination campaign
19:13that aims to reach 44,000 children.
19:14In turn, 24 health centers and medical points will be established throughout the Ghazan strip
19:15to strengthen medical care for children under 18.
19:16In the absence of vaccines for children, the United Nations has launched a vaccination campaign
19:21that aims to reach 44,000 children.
19:25In turn, 24 health centers and medical points will be established throughout the Ghazan strip
19:29to strengthen medical care for children under 18.
19:44The vaccination campaign comes after two years of Israeli aggression, which led to the near-total collapse
19:49of the healthcare system and interrupted immunization programs, depriving hundreds of thousands of children
19:54of their essential vaccines.
20:01And Turkey issued arrest warrants for genocide against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Tanyahu
20:06and senior officials.
20:08Among the 37 suspects listed are Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Benvir
20:14and Army Chief Lieutenant General Eyal Samir, according to a statement from the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office.
20:20Turkey has accused the officials of genocide and crimes against humanity that Israel has perpetrated systematically in Gaza.
20:28It is important to note that Turkey last year joined South Africa's case accusing Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice.
