00:00The Garden Rescue Team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true.
00:10Charlie Dimmock, Lee Burkill, Flo Hedlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your
00:27gardening emergencies. It feels disorganized, a bit chaotic. It's a bit of a shocker.
00:32Each week two of our designers will go head to head. Pick me and let's do this.
00:37The garden we're going to go with is John Rye!
00:46And whichever designer loses. The race is on.
00:49Helps the winner build the garden. Good idea. Did you get that on camera?
00:54Lee said good idea Charlie. Amazing.
00:57Turning garden dreams. Open your eyes.
01:00That's so overwhelmed.
01:02Into reality.
01:04That is amazing.
01:11Today the team are taking on a functional but tired narrow garden in Winchester.
01:17Do you want the peppers?
01:19Yeah, go for it.
01:20Yeah, here we go.
01:21Two peppers. Let's get a bowl.
01:25Lucy and husband Stefan met ten years ago at university.
01:30We lived opposite each other on a corridor and kind of bonded over food in the kitchen I think.
01:34Yeah, we were big foodies and we used to cook for each other every week.
01:40Yeah.
01:41Yeah, not your typical student grub though.
01:43I think the first thing we cooked was venison casserole together.
01:46Yeah.
01:49Their passion for food has a particular focus.
01:52I think we got into barbecuing during lockdown didn't we?
01:55Yeah.
01:56We were bouncing around the house and ended up just cooking outside every other day and kind of got a bit of a passion for it that way.
02:02Yeah.
02:03And then we ended up doing Christmas dinner on it that year and that's become a bit of a tradition since.
02:07What have we got on the barbecue?
02:09We've got piri piri chicken.
02:10Nice.
02:12And the couple welcomed three-month-old son Alfie into their lives.
02:16What's daddy cooking?
02:19Yeah.
02:22It's always been like my pet project to do something with the garden and I think this year being on maternity leave I was like right this is what I'm going to do this year, get the garden sorted.
02:32Yeah.
02:33But realising it is really hard.
02:35Now Alfie's come along and that's kind of meant it would actually be quite a nice time to have a nice space outside for him to sort of grow into and do some cooking and things with him outside later on as well.
02:44But yeah, the garden is just needing some help.
02:51Personally I think the garden is just looking a little bit tired.
02:54It just, sometimes I find it a little bit depressing to be outside because it's just a bit tatty.
03:00It's not somewhere you want to come sit and socialise with friends I think.
03:04Because we love to cook and we love being outdoors at the moment there's just no space.
03:11Especially when it comes to their one big love.
03:13So we obviously love cooking on the barbecue but I think the thing that we don't have at the moment that would be really useful is places to prep food outside, store the charcoal, store the smoking wood, those kind of things.
03:26Yeah, it's always, otherwise we're always like ferrying stuff in and out in and out and it's just a bit of a pain.
03:32In bad weather putting mud all over the kitchen.
03:34Yes.
03:35So I guess another thing that we really don't like about the garden is this kind of awkward slope that we've got here.
03:44It just makes the space really, well, awkward to deal with.
03:48Yeah and the grass is quite uneven and patchy as well isn't it?
03:52Yeah, bit of a mess.
03:54And I guess the far corner of the garden the problem we've got with it is this assortment of concrete and patio slabs.
04:00Yeah, it's a real mish-mash I think here.
04:02Yeah, I think it's fair to say this corner of the garden probably is a little bit of a disaster isn't it?
04:07You know, whilst we're quite outdoorsy people, we don't really know much about gardens and planting and things like that and it's useful to get some help with what we can do with the garden, the light that we get.
04:16Knowledge, yeah, we need the knowledge first and then we're raring to go.
04:25We really want the garden to be sorted out now because we've got the house to a state where we're really happy with it and it just feels like this is the missing link almost.
04:35Just to have a nice complete garden would be great.
04:39Cup of tea?
04:40Yeah, let's get a cup of tea.
04:46Chris and Flo,
04:50Isn't this nice?
04:52Are hoping their design will be the one to take the garden from tatty and tired to tremendous.
05:01Right Flo, got Lucinda and Stefan in Winchester.
05:05Yes, with their hands on a, something looks like they're incubating something.
05:09I think that looks like a massive barbecue there.
05:11It's a barbecue, isn't it?
05:12Look at them, look how happy they look, they clearly love it.
05:14Yeah, yeah, that's a clue isn't it?
05:16Definitely a clue I think.
05:17Let's have a look at their garden.
05:19So quite a long garden.
05:20Very, very long.
05:21And this down here, I mean they've got this patio at the back of the house but it looks very dark and shady, doesn't it?
05:26And they look like they've been trying to do a bit of guarding their room.
05:30Yeah, very patchy lawn, very sad looking garden.
05:33Definitely needs a bit of love.
05:35Absolutely.
05:36So, should we find out what they want?
05:39Definitely.
05:40Okay.
05:41Hi Chris, hi Flo.
05:43We'd love to have a garden dedicated to barbecuing, growing our own produce and socialising it.
05:48We were right, barbecuing.
05:50I mean, a pretty big clue, right?
05:52Yes, yes.
05:53And we'd love to have a dining table as well, something that's nestled in amongst all the plants,
05:57somewhere we can sit with family and friends and really relax.
06:01They want a lot in this little garden.
06:03Yes, they do.
06:04It'd be great to have a dedicated kitchen area in the garden, somewhere with the barbecue next to it,
06:09where I can prepare food and cook it.
06:11Right.
06:12So, yeah.
06:13And we're a new family too, so it'd be really great to have sort of a garden that Alfie can learn how to grow his own food and cook it as well.
06:21Now that's a good concept, isn't it? We love that.
06:23You can grow it, you can see it happening and then you're really proud of it and then boom, it's on your plate.
06:29So hopefully that's not too much to ask and we're really looking forward to seeing your designs.
06:33There is a lot to pack into this narrow, long garden.
06:36Yes.
06:37So go on Flo, tell me, what's the budget?
06:39It's 6,000.
06:40Ooh.
06:41Which is a good size budget for this size garden.
06:43I think so too.
06:44I have got loads of ideas for this one, I can't wait to design it.
06:48Likewise, I'm going to cook up something special.
06:50Did you see what I did there?
06:51Oh, that was a good one.
06:52I know, right?
06:53Not going to be as good as my design though.
06:55Watch out.
06:57Chris and Flo will create designs in line with the healthy 6,000 pound budget.
07:03Lucy and Stefan have to pick their favourite, which the losing designer will help build.
07:09The designers and top team of landscapers provide the labour for free, leaving the entire budget to spend on materials and plants.
07:22OK, let's see what we've got.
07:28Welcome to BBQ Central.
07:30That's the name of the garden I've designed for you.
07:33Nice.
07:34This is your garden, the barbecue capital of Wessex.
07:38Let me take you on a journey and show you what it's all about.
07:41I wanted to step out onto your patio, but what I've done is I've introduced just a simple step along that edge to get rid of that weird, awkward ramp that came up from the back gate.
07:51That step down is going to work far better than the ramp that we've got.
07:54Yeah, I think that's going to make a huge difference actually.
07:56Flo's design includes a shed for the young family to store toys and barbecue equipment inside.
08:02But having a shed near to the house is problematic because you don't want to look out and see it straight away.
08:07So what I've done is I've brought some planting very close to the patio, very close to the house.
08:12But I've also put the screen here in the middle of that bed, which means I can mask this view.
08:19Yeah, that's a really good way of using that corner, isn't it?
08:22So what I've decided to do is to break it up into three different rooms.
08:26The first one is that immediate area straight out of the house.
08:29And then we've got this amazing middle zone.
08:32Now this is all about the barbecue, cooking and growing produce.
08:36So down this left hand side, we've got a really big six metre long raised bed and it's four foot wide.
08:43In there you can be growing vegetables, herbs, fruit bushes, anything you want that you can get on that barbecue.
08:49And I've given you a generous grow your own section.
08:53These two raised beds.
08:55I'm going to put pollinating plants in there so some lovely pops of summer colour.
08:59The bees will be just crazy over it.
09:01And then this is your section here for growing your own fruit, veg.
09:07That's nice.
09:08I think this is the bit that you're going to be really excited about.
09:11This is going to be a spot where you can barbecue, prep your food all in the dry
09:16because this is a covered barbecue station.
09:19Oh, that's going to be really good.
09:21Yeah, I love that. It would be nice not to use an umbrella.
09:23Yeah.
09:24It's going to be quite simple, really nice rustic timber work with a corrugated steel roof.
09:29But you've got your very own kitchen worktop underneath here.
09:33And underneath that is going to be two little storage cupboards with stainless steel doors.
09:38So they really are all weather.
09:40And we also want to make you your very own bespoke dining tables.
09:44Oh, I really like that. Yeah.
09:46The midsection of Flo's design is more of an open space.
09:50I've taken all the lawn out and replaced it with gravel, which is low maintenance, looks good, wet or dry.
09:57Chris has also swapped the original grass for something different.
10:02I've got these amazing sandstone sets that are going to link the garden together on a curve flowing through the whole space.
10:09And then I've got other ones running horizontally across.
10:12And what that does is it just gives you a little visual pause as you move into each zone, but they also connect it all together.
10:18I like how green the garden is.
10:20Yeah, it actually really contrasts nice against the gravel.
10:23The real star is this brand new porcelain patio with the sandstone sets around the edge.
10:29And this is going to be where you catch the last of the evening sun.
10:32Stefan, I know you really like your sort of architectural plants.
10:35You really like the palm that you've got there.
10:37So I wanted to give that a new lease of life and then complement it with more architectural plants around that area.
10:43So I'd love to give you a tree fern in one of those corners on the shadier side there.
10:47Yeah, I like how it's surrounded by all the plants. It looks quite snug for the evenings.
10:50So I put these two trellises here and we get to the patio.
10:55Barbecue Central. And this is where you guys are going to hang out.
10:59You're going to kick back, cook your barbecue, prepare food, have a social space for you and friends and family.
11:07That's nice.
11:08I really, really love this garden. I think it's got some amazing quirky details and I'd love to see it built.
11:14So I hope you pick me.
11:15I really like this design. I would love for you to have this as your garden. So let's do this.
11:21It's going to be really tricky to pick between those two actually.
11:24Yeah. Oh dear.
11:28Chris has the kitchens here.
11:30Yeah. And the kitchen I think looks really nice there.
11:32Yeah, there's a nice amount of space to work with, isn't there?
11:34Yeah, really nice. And then the back of the garden, that seems to be where the patios are going to be.
11:40Yeah. Slightly different though, aren't they?
11:42Yeah. Flo's has got that nice burglar in the corner which makes use of that space nicely.
11:46Yeah, but then I really like the slabs used in Chris's as well.
11:50Hmm.
11:51It's really tough. Have you got a leaning to which one you prefer?
11:54No, it's a really difficult decision between the two.
11:56Yeah.
11:59Hi Chris, hi Flo. Thanks for two amazing garden designs.
12:02We were bowled over by how you came up with two such different designs.
12:06I guess starting with Flo's design, I particularly loved all the pops of colours that you use throughout the garden.
12:13Oh yes. Trademark.
12:15You and your colours.
12:16Yeah.
12:17Yeah, and Chris for me the obvious highlight is that kitchen area would be so nice not to get soaking wet whilst cooking Christmas dinner this year.
12:23There's elements from both gardens that we absolutely love and if we could we'd pick and choose them from either one.
12:29I mean they can't have both.
12:31No, add mine.
12:32So, drum roll.
12:36Chris.
12:40Yes!
12:41I'm going to take that Flo all day long.
12:45I really, really wanted this one actually.
12:47Yeah, yeah.
12:48No fair play.
12:49I think you know the kitchen and the growing area is what won it.
12:53Exactly.
12:54We could have a lot of fun building this.
12:55Oh definitely, definitely.
12:56Yeah, yeah.
12:57And maybe, you know, strike up the barbecue afterwards.
12:59Oh yes.
13:00Now you're talking.
13:01Fortunately, Ben and the landscaping team are ready to get cooking and sort this garden out.
13:11Sunshine.
13:13Ooh.
13:14Okay then team, we are here in Winchester.
13:19Hoping that sun comes around to visit us.
13:22I don't.
13:23No?
13:24No, it would be too hot.
13:26We want to keep the patio by the house.
13:28We're then going to take this down so there isn't a slope.
13:31Two areas of paving, one by the gate and then the second one is at the top of the garden here.
13:37But we do have a huge six meter long raised bed going in there.
13:42Wow.
13:43Not only that, you've got this barbecue station.
13:45Not at all.
13:46Not only that.
13:47Oh God.
13:48Here we go again.
13:49Chris would like us to make an outdoor dining table.
13:52Jono, me, you and Monty, we're going to do two curved parallel lines.
13:57Yeah.
13:58Through the garden up to the top paved area.
14:00Yeah.
14:01Let's get the digger in there, strip everything back and crack on with it.
14:04I think we'll do it.
14:05Let's do it.
14:07First job, removing the ugly concrete slabs at the back of the garden.
14:13It's a thick pata.
14:14It is, yeah.
14:15As always, the team are keen to save as many plants as possible, including this giant fatsia.
14:24OK, we've got as much roots out as we could.
14:27Now, fill this gorilla bucket up with water.
14:32We're going to give it a nice drink and then Chris will come in and he's going to put it in his new home.
14:39Small jobs done, it's time for some big help to strip the lawn out.
14:44Look at that.
14:45Look at that, makes it look easy.
14:48Whilst the lawn gets stripped out, Lee and Jamie have been working on the giant raised fruit and veg bed.
15:00We're actually making some headway, final part of the puzzle.
15:05Then we can start putting a bit of this waste soil into here and then we can start moving on to the barbecue enclosure.
15:12I'm looking forward to that, something a bit different.
15:14While the back of the garden is prepared for its patio, work can get underway in the kitchen area.
15:28You stick to digging holes, I'll stick to doing building stuff.
15:32With the posts in place, work can begin on the frame.
15:39Beautiful.
15:40We're ready out back to start laying down some paving, so yeah, time to get the mixer on so we can get the slabs down.
15:55With the frame now complete, it's time for Lee and Jamie to fit the roof to the kitchen area.
16:00So now we're just putting the tin sheets on, we've cut all the joists, so we're going to do a sheet, then add the joist, do another sheet, add the joist until we get all the way to the end.
16:13Work is also underway laying the small decorative tiles called sets.
16:18With the first day coming to an end, the landscapers give it one more push to get the slats onto the back of the kitchen,
16:35edge the rear patio with sets,
16:42as well as creating a step from the front patio to lose the slope.
16:46So, right at the end of the day, the boys are just putting the last slab down now, and then we'll wait for the designers, they'll be here in the morning.
17:07The next morning in Winchester...
17:09Here we are, Flo, in the former capital of England.
17:12Yes, where the ancient kings and queens used to hang out.
17:14Exactly, well, we are going to be the king and queen of barbecues today.
17:19Oh, I can't wait to get that grill on and start flipping those burgers.
17:24Oh, that sounds good, Flo.
17:27Oh, wow. This is good for a king and queen.
17:30We absolutely loving these sets.
17:33Doesn't it just draw you through?
17:35Exactly, it's got the curve, and you know I love a curve.
17:37That is a work of art.
17:38Isn't that beautiful?
17:39We're looking pretty good, it's quite far along this.
17:42I'm loving that.
17:43Yeah, yeah, the kitchen's coming along.
17:44Well, I mean, you say that at the minute, it's a shelter.
17:46There isn't much of a kitchen in it, so...
17:48It's got the...
17:50That's your job today?
17:51That's my job.
17:52Yeah, okay, what's my job today then?
17:53Well, there's lots of bits and bobs that I'd really like you to focus on the veg beds today.
17:57Oh, yummy, yummy.
17:58There is an amazing grapevine over there, so I think that needs a bit of love and maybe some wires to train it along.
18:04And then I've got the very fun job of giving you some flat pack furniture to erect.
18:09I kind of like flat pack.
18:10I mean, you know, it pushes some buttons for me, but I love the adventure.
18:14Exactly, and it's all going to come together and we're going to make a beautiful garden.
18:17Absolutely.
18:18All right, I'm going to get my flat pack energy going.
18:21Go on, you do it.
18:24Now, we are in a really good place with this garden.
18:26You can see all of the bare bones are in.
18:28We've got part of the shelter built.
18:30But although that's pretty good, there's still a lot of work to do
18:33because I'm going to be focusing all my efforts on this barbecue station.
18:37And now this is what I think won me the garden.
18:40And I've got some very special cabinets for it.
18:44So I'm going to take my time and get that just perfect.
18:48And then we move into the productive area where I want to give Lucinda and Stefan loads of produce space
18:54where they can grow together as a family.
18:56But another big thing that needs to happen in this zone is we need to make them a bespoke table
19:01and Flo is going to be working on all that flat pack furniture.
19:04And what's really lovely is these sets just breaking up the garden into different rooms.
19:09And then with these other sets crossing through in the curves, it just links you through the garden
19:14and shows you exactly where you need to walk.
19:17With no workable space inside, the team will have to build all the furniture outside the garden,
19:23starting with the flat packs.
19:25I'm just going to channel all my energy into following the instructions, number one,
19:31and getting it done really quickly.
19:33So pray for me, everybody.
19:37Lee has been tasked with building a dining table from Oak.
19:41Getting the wood into the right condition is the first task.
19:45Once I've got it all plain down, sanded, cut it to length.
19:48It's going to be 1.5 long, so it's not going to be too heavy to move around.
19:52We've got some lovely metal legs we're going to fasten to it.
19:55I think it's going to look really nice.
19:56Once it's all made, sorted out, I'm going to give it a nice coat of oil.
20:00That should make the grain pop.
20:03And hopefully Chris will be happy with it.
20:07But there's no point in dining furniture if there's no garden kitchen.
20:11Right, what are we doing then, boss?
20:13Right, well, this is the most important bit of the garden.
20:15Don't tell Flo that, because those benches are very important too.
20:18Yes, my bench is important!
20:20But this bit is crucial.
20:22It's a big part of the design, so we need to get it right.
20:24Yep.
20:25And it's a bit more fiddly, isn't it?
20:26Because we've got those cabinets to build in.
20:28We have this thing that's still doors, yeah.
20:29We do, and we've got the porcelain countertop going all out on this one.
20:33You've put a lot into this one.
20:34I know!
20:36I was thinking, so 600 outside to outside,
20:38then you do cement board straight on top, no?
20:40Is that what you're saying or not?
20:41Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:42I'm just trying to work out what the inner bit is.
20:43I got you.
20:44Makes sense.
20:45Posts, framework, then we can think about all the fiddly bits and prettify in it.
20:50Awesome.
20:52Look at that!
20:53Perfect!
20:54I'm almost at the end of this one.
21:00Been fairly straightforward.
21:02Only ten screws.
21:04Two chairs to do.
21:06I mean, what could go wrong?
21:07Eh?
21:08What could go wrong?
21:14Next, to join the whole garden design together,
21:17is the arrival of the plant life.
21:19You know what this means, don't you?
21:21Oh, I know.
21:22Yeah.
21:23Look at that!
21:24Magic, woo!
21:25Loving it.
21:26Love those colours.
21:27Very architectural, right?
21:29Yes, yes, but I love the clashing.
21:31Yeah, well, you know, you've got to have a bit of contrast.
21:33Yes.
21:34But it is, it's got a very stylised, unique look.
21:37It's not too over the top, is it?
21:38No, no, those moody purples.
21:40Yeah, the hookahs are cool, aren't they?
21:42Sip very well.
21:43We've got those, then we've got some other architectural plants.
21:46We've got these little yuccas, look at them.
21:48Mmm.
21:49They are cute.
21:50Aren't they?
21:51Yeah.
21:52It's all about getting the contrast of foliage around the garden.
21:54Mm-hmm.
21:55And then, of course, there's the food bits.
21:56Wow, this is the bit I want you focusing on today.
21:58Yes, yes, yes.
21:59So, obviously, we've got some chillies, got some sage and mint.
22:02Yes.
22:03And the rosemary tucked in there.
22:05Lovely.
22:06And then what about these big boys at the back?
22:07Banana plant.
22:08Banana.
22:09Bit of heights.
22:10And right back there, I've got the biggest surprise of them all.
22:13Oh.
22:14That's my massive tree fin.
22:16Oh, yeah.
22:17Oh, yeah.
22:18Oh.
22:19Come on.
22:20Skip that.
22:21Look at my big banana.
22:22It's good, isn't it?
22:23Beautiful.
22:24When do you think we'll get some fruit?
22:25No time soon.
22:26Stick it in the garden.
22:27It's lovely.
22:28It's going in.
22:29With the plants off the van, Flo is taking a break from building the flat packs to help
22:33edge a planting border.
22:35I'm laying these sets down to create this curved edge.
22:36Sets are these small squares that are used for paving.
22:37They can sometimes give a cobbled effect if used in a certain way.
22:38But they're really nice.
22:39They're made out of natural stones.
22:40So, no two are exactly the same.
22:41But that's lovely.
22:42That gives it the real kind of...
22:43That's lovely.
22:44That gives it the real kind of...
22:45natural, rustic feel to it.
22:46And it does take a bit more time to build the flat packs to help edge a planting border.
22:50I'm laying these sets down to create this curved edge.
22:55Sets are these small squares that are used for paving.
22:58They can sometimes give a cobbled effect if used in a certain way.
23:02But they're really nice.
23:03They're made out of natural stones.
23:05So, no two are exactly the same.
23:07But that's lovely.
23:08That gives it the real kind of natural, rustic feel to it.
23:13And it does take a bit more time to obviously lay because they're smaller sized units.
23:19But they look really good.
23:22And as they weather, look even better.
23:27There.
23:29Happy with that.
23:30The guys are going to cement them in, bring them up to the same level.
23:33And, voila, job done.
23:43Meanwhile, Chris's bespoke kitchen unit is starting to take shape.
23:50This is the framework for the countertop.
23:53So, this is where the porcelain tiles are going to sit.
23:56But first, we've got to get this all screwed in, then we can cut the legs,
23:59and we know what we're really working with.
24:01You're working with me.
24:03Best in the business?
24:04Well, second best.
24:06I'm just going to try out my chair with the table.
24:11Leah, I just thought I'd come and...
24:16Supervise.
24:17No, just check it out.
24:18Just see how they work together.
24:20It's beautiful.
24:21Yeah?
24:22You like it?
24:23Look at that.
24:24Yes.
24:25Oh, it's wrong colour though.
24:26Oh, it's got wrong colour chairs.
24:27Send them back.
24:28You'll have to take them all to pieces there.
24:29I know.
24:30Something isn't quite working.
24:31Put them back to the box.
24:32Send them back.
24:33So, you're going to oil this?
24:35Yes.
24:36Yeah.
24:37It's a bit of linseed oil.
24:38Oiled linseed?
24:39Yeah, just linseed oil.
24:40Mmm.
24:41It'll just bring grain out and just protect it a bit.
24:42No, it's going to...
24:43Yeah, I'm not going to touch it because I don't want to stain it before it gets oiled.
24:46But, yeah.
24:47I think dinner will shortly be served.
24:54This is so annoying.
24:56I thought it would all just peel off.
24:59Oh.
25:00Oh.
25:01It's nothing more satisfying than taking the protective coating off something.
25:05Oh.
25:06The noise isn't quite as nice, but...
25:09Look at how nice, beautiful and shiny that is.
25:12Easy to clean.
25:13And it's going to stand out on that beautiful barbecue over there.
25:18With half the day gone, the garden is prepared to receive gravel.
25:22And the kitchen unit is ready to be brought in.
25:28I'm most looking forward to the kitchen area.
25:30I think it looks fantastic.
25:31I'd really like to prep the food outside and put it on the barbecue,
25:34and then serve it up outside straight away,
25:37rather than having to come indoors again.
25:39All right.
25:40All right.
25:41Ben's going in.
25:42Right, and then we'll...
25:43I'll take it.
25:44You got it?
25:45I guess my only worry is whether there's going to be enough space
25:47to store off the wood and the charcoal.
25:49Right.
25:51There we go.
25:52Yeah.
25:53And if there's enough space to store off your aprons and oven mitts
25:56and all that other paraphernalia you've got.
25:59And then to you a bit, is it?
26:02Do you need to get out?
26:04Ready?
26:05Ready?
26:06We'll trap you in.
26:07There we go.
26:08Now, obviously, we've still got to level this up,
26:11and there's a lot of work to do to finish it,
26:13but it looks pretty good in position.
26:16A few leftover sets are used to level things out,
26:20and the unit can be cemented into its permanent home.
26:26Where the magic happens.
26:27Are you ready?
26:28While Lee adds a protective layer of oil to the oak table,
26:31attention in the garden turns to the finer details.
26:34Hey!
26:36I know!
26:37What do you think?
26:38It's gorgeous.
26:39I love it.
26:40Love the stainless steel.
26:41Yeah.
26:42It's a bit of a statement, but the garden's looking all right,
26:46but it's lacking something pretty obvious, isn't it?
26:48Yeah.
26:49Yeah.
26:50More gravel!
26:51No, not more gravel.
26:52Plants!
26:53Plants!
26:54So, look, I've got my wires.
26:55My first job now is to get onto the vine.
26:59You're going to tame the vine.
27:00Tame the vine.
27:01Tame the vine, and then planting it.
27:03And I'm going to start bringing some of the big plants in now.
27:05Yeah.
27:06Cool.
27:07All right.
27:08All right.
27:09Ready?
27:10First of Chris's architectural plants is this large feature tree.
27:12Come on, then.
27:13Let's get it in its...
27:14You talking to me or the fern?
27:15The fern.
27:16Go on.
27:17Come on.
27:18Flo also has her hands full with a grape vine.
27:23Okay, I'm just wearing the vine at the moment, just for a bit of fun.
27:29But actually, it's a really healthy, robust plant.
27:33And there's a lot of it, so I'm going to need some really strong wire,
27:37good tension to hold it on this fence here.
27:41It's probably enough to go round that side as well, which would be lovely.
27:46In fact, it's planting puzzles everywhere you look.
27:53Sometimes you've just got to sit and stare, figure out where something's going to go.
27:58Meanwhile, Flo is getting a helping hand to install the wires to support the grape vine.
28:04Maybe if you go to the end...
28:05And pull.
28:06Pull the down bit.
28:07Yes.
28:08So the top comes a bit tighter.
28:09Yes.
28:10Yep.
28:11Yep.
28:12Perfect.
28:13Perfect.
28:14Lee is giving the kitchen a porcelain work top to match the patio,
28:18and Chris is finally ready to plant his feature fern.
28:23This beast right here is my key feature plant that sits right at the end of this garden.
28:29Now, tree ferns are quite unusual plants, because a lot of people haven't seen these before.
28:35They're from New Zealand and Tasmania.
28:38And what's really interesting about them is that when you buy them,
28:41they often come with no roots on the bottom,
28:44because all of the roots are actually on the trunk itself.
28:49And because it's not got the roots, you don't have to get it that deep.
28:53It's just enough to stop it toppling over.
28:59You can just gently tease these open.
29:07And over time, they will start to sit down naturally again,
29:11but because it's been wrapped up, it's still a bit like a shuttlecock at the minute.
29:15Now, when you're looking after your tree fern,
29:17especially when it's just getting established,
29:19you need to keep it watered if it's hot weather like this.
29:22And what you can do is just get a hose, water down the trunk,
29:26or just water from above, and it will run from the crown down the trunk.
29:30You just want to make sure that stays moist,
29:32especially when it's just been planted,
29:34because it hasn't put any of its fibrous roots out into the soil below.
29:38Other than that, you should just enjoy them.
29:42Look after them, and then you get these beautiful fronds,
29:45casting lovely shadows all over your patio.
29:48It's an amazing, amazing plant.
29:54Chris's design also includes an extensive raised fruit and vegetable bed,
29:59which Flo is taking charge of.
30:02There's nothing better than growing your own fruit,
30:06and especially when it's not a fruit that is readily available
30:10in the markets or the supermarkets.
30:12And Red Goodsbury is one such plant,
30:14so if you can get hold of a plant,
30:17buy it and get it in your garden.
30:20So like most cane fruit, they're quite easy to grow.
30:25They need good drainage, good access to sun, and lots of watering.
30:32This one is grown on a frame, so it's cordon trained,
30:36which is really good if you're tight on space.
30:38And in a bed like this, which hasn't got that much depth
30:42and where you want to put in a lot of plants,
30:44it's a really good choice, because you can train it
30:47and keep it in this shape as it gets bigger.
30:50I hope Lucy and Stefan are really excited about this,
30:52because it's an unusual one, but a lovely fruit to have.
30:56I hope they're going to be very happy.
30:59Back on the other side of the garden...
31:03This corner of the garden, where it gets the last of the evening sun,
31:06is all about the architectural plants.
31:08But to set those off, you need some really beautiful underplanting.
31:12And this heuchera, Forever Purple, is perfect for that.
31:16And what's really good about this heuchera
31:18is it kind of gives a jungly effect,
31:20which works really well with the tree fern
31:22and the formiums that I've got in here too.
31:24And you get these beautiful flowers that come up and arch over,
31:28and it also softens up the edges of the paving as well.
31:32But what I think works really well here
31:34is the contrast between the Santolina and the heuchera.
31:38It just makes this corner of the garden pop.
31:40And heucheras are relatively easy to look after.
31:43They're happy in some shade and partial sun.
31:47And they don't mind it a little bit moist,
31:51but they probably wouldn't want to be in a sunny, dry, exposed position.
31:54Yeah, I think these are beautiful here.
31:57GLAW has more edible plants for the veg bed.
32:01GLAW has more edible plants for the veg bed.
32:04Chris has chosen another really interesting plant for this section.
32:09It's called a pepper plant.
32:10And the reason why it's called a pepper plant is because...
32:13I'll demonstrate to you.
32:17Chew it.
32:18Initially, it's a bit herby,
32:20and then the pepper kicks in
32:24when it hits you at the back of your throat.
32:26It's really very nice.
32:28If you like chilies, if you like that hot sensation,
32:30then it's absolutely...
32:33Mmm!
32:34100% enjoyable.
32:36You can use it in cooking.
32:37You can use it as a tea.
32:39And it's also a very attractive evergreen plant.
32:44In the spring, there's clusters
32:46of really pretty cream-fragrant white flowers.
32:50And a plant that's going to look good in the depths of winter.
32:53A really good structural plant.
32:56While the kitchen unit gets some finishing touches,
33:00Chris has another tree for the garden.
33:03This beautiful tree is Circus canadensis forest pansy.
33:07The eastern redbud.
33:08And it has the most beautiful red leaves.
33:13In autumn, they turn the most amazing colours.
33:15You can already see some of the veining starting to come out on the leaves there.
33:20But what also is very special about this plant is that in spring,
33:24when there's no leaves on the tree,
33:26beautiful pinky buds emerge all over the stems.
33:30They're not just on the tips of the leaves.
33:33They come from the actual hardwood all the way over it.
33:36And it is a real spectacle.
33:38Now, it's a great tree for this end of the garden
33:40because it has such a glorious habit.
33:42As it grows up, its branches really arch over.
33:45And you have the multi-stem look.
33:48So as it gets taller, you can cut some of those lower stems,
33:51show off the branches and let this underplanting really thrive.
33:56And I think that's what this garden needs.
33:58We've got a good mix of evergreens,
34:00but then you need these deciduous plants
34:03that give you that flash of colour in spring or in autumn
34:06to give you some seasonal drama.
34:08So I think Stefan and Lucinda are going to love this one.
34:14And Flo has another hot plant for the produce area.
34:17Look how vibrant and colourful this chilli plant is.
34:21It is absolutely weighted down with chillies.
34:24And Lucy and Stefan are really into chillies and that's great.
34:28You know, they might get through them in a season,
34:31but when the plant starts to die, because it's an annual,
34:33they can pick the chillies, they can take them inside,
34:36string them up, dry them, put them in oil, crush them,
34:40use them in their cooking.
34:42So, you know, they don't have to die on the plant.
34:50As the day nears the end,
34:52Chris has found the perfect spot for Stefan and Lucy's fatsia.
34:56Right.
34:58Now this fatsia has had a hard time recently
35:02because it was down here where the barbecue station is,
35:05but I really wanted to save it so the guys have lifted it,
35:08put it in a bucket of water to keep its roots happy,
35:11and now I'm going to replant it right on the edge here.
35:16Now it's a great plant for this corner of the garden
35:18because it gets plenty of shade over here,
35:21so it's not going to dry out too much.
35:23And what's good with transplanting it is that because we're at the end of summer,
35:26coming into autumn, it's not going to get too stressed with loads of heat.
35:30So I think it should survive and be absolutely fine.
35:33With the day almost over, all that's left is to bring the dining table in.
35:43Up here?
35:44Yeah, if we go just past that line.
35:46As well as Flo's chairs and benches.
35:52And move the barbecue to pride of place in the bespoke outdoor kitchen.
35:58The final feature of its perfect new home.
36:01Hey! How are you feeling about this?
36:06I am loving it in here. It feels really good, doesn't it?
36:09They're going to be blown away.
36:11Yeah, I think, compared to what was here,
36:13the amount of usable garden that they've now got is just ridiculous.
36:17Yeah, it's modern, clean lines, love the kitchen.
36:21Of course they're going to love the kitchen.
36:23I know, it's a bit over the top, but they deserve that, right?
36:26They can grow their own food, sit out and enjoy it.
36:29It is. I love what you've done with all the produce in this bed.
36:32I mean, the good thing about it is it's something
36:34that they can experiment with next year as well, isn't it?
36:36Yes. And, you know, your planting scheme is beautiful.
36:39I mean, obviously, I love the dark colours, but tree farm is...
36:42Oh! Golden feature. Yeah.
36:45But, yeah, the thing is, it's a lovely garden, but it's for them.
36:49It's for them, yeah, not us, sadly.
36:51Shall I go and get Stefan and Lucy? Yeah, yeah, bring them out.
36:53OK. Bring them out.
36:55Two days ago, Lucy and Stefan's garden was tatty and uninspiring,
37:01with nowhere for them to comfortably cook or eat as a family with baby Alfie.
37:07Now, with a budget of £6,000, it's been transformed into BBQ Central,
37:15complete with dining and seating areas and a variety of eye-catching plants.
37:21But will it be all they wished for?
37:24There you are. Now you're together and you can hold each other's hands if you like.
37:27There you go.
37:29Now, you really wanted a garden that celebrated your absolute love
37:33of cooking outdoors on your beloved BBQ.
37:36You wanted an outdoor kitchen.
37:38You wanted an area to grow produce.
37:40You wanted a big socialising space and a spot to catch the last of the evening sun.
37:46And most importantly, you wanted a garden that you could grow into as a family
37:50and one you could nurture together for years to come.
37:53So, please, without any further ado, open your eyes.
37:58Wow!
37:59Oh, my God! Wow!
38:01Look at that!
38:03Oh, wow!
38:06Look at the table.
38:08This is it. There's things everywhere, Lou.
38:10That's nice.
38:12Oh, that's a good reaction.
38:15Oh, look. Look at the chillies.
38:17Yeah.
38:18Oh!
38:19Look at the tree fence.
38:20The tree fence.
38:21Yeah.
38:22Of course, that caught your eye.
38:23Wow!
38:24God, it's like a tropical paradise, almost.
38:26You know, that palm, that was already yours.
38:28Some of these shrubs, they were already there.
38:29But they just needed some love around them.
38:31Aw!
38:32And the cooking area.
38:34Well, obviously, it's got a dam.
38:36Plenty, plenty.
38:37Yeah, yeah.
38:38I can't believe it's our garden.
38:40Before, the garden lacked anywhere for the couple to enjoy their favourite pastime.
38:45Now, they can relish in their very own covered barbecue space, complete with outdoor kitchen.
38:52Oh, my gosh.
38:53Do you think this is fit for your cooking requirements?
38:56It's better than the kitchen inside.
38:58Yes!
38:59That's what we wanted to hear.
39:01Of course, they love the kitchen.
39:03That was the whole point of this garden, and it is stunning.
39:06It's big, it's bigger than I thought it was going to be, but you're definitely going to use all the space.
39:10Yeah, I'm going to use that space, definitely.
39:11Yeah.
39:12Wow, you've got space on top, and then you've got porcelain tops that match the porcelain paving at the end.
39:18I've noticed the lights as well.
39:20Well, I know.
39:21I'm a big fan of light.
39:23When it goes dark, the leaves will automatically turn on.
39:26I really love it, yeah.
39:27It gives me some light as well.
39:28Yeah, and this factory here with the big leaves, this was along here before, but we've actually managed to lift it.
39:35I love all the ferns as well.
39:36Yeah, so we made a tiny raised bed in there just to retain the soil a bit.
39:40It looks lovely with them spilling out over the edges.
39:42Yeah.
39:43And what do you think about these sets that sort of go through?
39:45I love it.
39:46I love that they're grey as well.
39:47Yeah.
39:48Like the fans are grey.
39:49Well, it ties in with the house, doesn't it?
39:50Yeah, yeah.
39:51Yeah, it breaks up the gravel really nicely.
39:53I really like contrast of textures, like the gravel, the porcelain and the sets and the wood.
39:58Yeah.
39:59Previously, the garden had nowhere to grow fruit and vegetables for themselves and baby Alfie.
40:06All that's changed with the introduction of a giant raised growing bed and a bespoke table for the family.
40:12It's great.
40:13So Flo's worked very hard on this bed today.
40:16So she's been putting in all these different edibles.
40:19You've got a bit of a herb garden as well.
40:21And I don't know if you've noticed this along your back fence.
40:25So yeah, this is your vine and she's actually tidied it up and put wires through your fence post for it.
40:30It's so unruly, that vine, but it looks so nice now.
40:32It does.
40:33Yeah.
40:34Now the good thing about this bed is pretty generous.
40:36So it's the sort of thing where, you know, we've put a few things in now, but we are quite late in the season.
40:40So this is next year.
40:41I think you can really make it your own.
40:42Yeah.
40:43Yeah.
40:44I'm already planning, I think.
40:45Yeah.
40:46What sort of things do you want to grow?
40:47Tomatoes, courgettes.
40:48Oh, yes.
40:49I like to do pumpkins as well.
40:50Pumpkins?
40:51Oh, they're going to take over.
40:52Yeah.
40:53Grow a massive pumpkin.
40:54Yeah.
40:55I think Alfie would really like that.
40:56That would be cool.
40:57Yeah.
40:58Oh, they love the veg area.
40:59I'm happy.
41:00You're picking your own tomato when it's, like, really warm and being sat in the sun.
41:03Yeah.
41:04And you can grab it from there, chuck it straight on your plate, on your very new table.
41:08Wow.
41:09It's cool, isn't it?
41:10The table is awesome.
41:11I love the legs.
41:12Again, it's something that I like inside as well as outside.
41:15Yeah.
41:16It would be great inside too.
41:17Now this was one area, but you've got a whole other area here.
41:21The end of the garden was once a barren concrete jungle.
41:29Now it's bursting with plant life and a porcelain patio sun trap.
41:33Wow.
41:34I love this.
41:35I love the purple hues.
41:36Love that.
41:37It's quite a bold contrast, but it fits with, like we were saying earlier, that sort of exotic-y
41:41architectural plant theme.
41:43And we've got to talk about the tree fern, right?
41:46Yeah.
41:47It's a big one.
41:48It's a big one.
41:49It is, yeah, it is really, really cool.
41:52Now this is obviously the sunny spot at the end of the day, isn't it?
41:56You really wanted a seating spot here.
41:57Yeah, yes.
41:58Because before it was just, well, no space.
42:00It was abandoned and, yeah.
42:02And now you've got the beautiful porcelain, the sets to tie it all together.
42:05So nice.
42:06It's really nice.
42:07I love the porcelain tiles there.
42:08It's good, isn't it?
42:09Yeah.
42:10They're modern and very sleek, but it's a great spot to chill out.
42:12And what's really nice about being down here is you get that view back to the house.
42:16It's brilliant, isn't it?
42:17It looks like a completely different garden.
42:19Yeah.
42:20Yeah.
42:21I can't believe it.
42:22I think you're going to be spending hours down here, aren't you?
42:23Oh, loads of time.
42:24Oh, yeah, I'm going to be spending hours down here.
42:25Yep.
42:26Now, obviously, I didn't build this garden all by myself.
42:28It was with the amazing team and the amazing Flo.
42:31Hi, guys.
42:32Hi.
42:33Hi.
42:34Nice to see you.
42:35What do you think?
42:36Absolutely love it.
42:37It's incredible.
42:38It's so nice.
42:39It's beautiful, isn't it?
42:40The crisp hole.
42:41Yeah.
42:42Glow up.
42:43Oh, the crisp hole glow up.
42:44That's got a ring to it.
42:45I like that.
42:46You're welcome.
42:47Now, does this garden tick all your boxes?
42:49Yeah.
42:50100%.
42:51I think more as well.
42:52And some more.
42:53Yeah.
42:54Absolutely love it.
42:55I think we did a good job.
42:56Yeah.
42:57Yes!
42:58Yes!
43:03Ecstatic.
43:04Yeah, absolutely love it.
43:06Can't quite believe it's ours.
43:08No, it's incredible.
43:09I'm going to be getting the barbecue on instantly.
43:11Yeah.
43:12Yeah.
43:13I think we've got a long list of people going to be knocking on our door.
43:16I'll get on in five minutes if Chris and Flo want to stay.
43:19Yeah.
43:20Yeah, yeah.
43:21I'll get to it.
43:22Yeah, yeah.
43:23Yeah.
43:24So, I'll get to it.
43:25So, let's have a little time for you.
43:26Thanks.
