00:00Sudan's paramilitary rapid support forces say it has agreed to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire
00:06proposal, raising hopes for a pause in the country's devastating conflict.
00:11The announcement came on Thursday, weeks after the RSF captured the city of El Fasher in
00:16Darfur.
00:17The group says it has accepted a plan put forward by the U.S., Saudi Arabia, the UAE
00:22and Egypt, aimed at allowing aid into the hardest-hit areas.
00:25In a statement, the RSF also said it is ready to discuss a broader cessation of hostilities
00:35and a political transition in Sudan.
00:38The army, however, has yet to respond.
00:41The country's Security and Defense Council met earlier this week but stopped short of a clear
00:46decision, while several senior officers have voiced opposition to the truce.
00:51The proposal, introduced in September, calls for a three-month humanitarian pause, followed
00:57by a permanent ceasefire and a transition to civilian rule.
01:02The war between Sudan's army and the RSF began in April 2023, after a power struggle between
01:08the two forces.
01:09The fighting has killed tens of thousands, displaced millions and plunged the country into what it is
01:15United Nations described as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
