Dierks Bentley talks touring, Sabrina Carpenter, and more backstage at 'Stars and Strings' with Katie Neal.
Transcript
00:00We are backstage inside the Hard Rock Artist Lounge at Odyssey Stars and Strings with Mr. Dirks Bentley.
00:09Hello. How are you? I'm doing great. How are you? It's beautiful. It's really nice in here, isn't it?
00:13It's really cool. Also, nice in your dressing room. Did you like the little gift we left in there for you?
00:18I love, there's a Lazy Boy. Is that what you're talking about? Yes, I am.
00:20Y'all, it's unbelievable how nice y'all took care of me. There's a Lazy Boy in there.
00:24So last year, I hurt my back putting a basketball hoop into my yard for my kids.
00:29For some reason, I ordered the Shaquille O'Neal version of basketball hoops.
00:32This thing required a four-foot-deep hole, a 24-by-24-by-48-inch hole.
00:39No.
00:39And I dug it myself, and then it rained. I had to re-dig all the mud out.
00:43It was about a six-month process.
00:45You were like, why did I do this?
00:46And just that whole motion right there, like over and over again, on my back as old as mine, it hurts.
00:52So I went on the tour last year, and I had a Lazy Boy that I like to kind of sit in every now and then
00:57and just kind of worked the back out. And you all brought a nice Lazy Boy here to replicate
01:00my backstage setup on the road.
01:02Yeah, I heard that you love a Lazy Boy.
01:04My back is better now, but I'll still get a Lazy Boy every now and then.
01:06Well, good. I'm glad to hear that.
01:07So tonight at Stars and Strings, you are going to share the stage with Hardy and Zach Topp.
01:11Yeah.
01:12And after touring with both of them, I'm very curious which one you have more incriminating information about.
01:18Definitely Zach.
01:19Really?
01:20Zach's a little bit like Luke Bryan in that he does a lot of stuff he probably shouldn't.
01:23But, you know, honestly, I mean, on a serious note, both those guys are guys I feel like I was in on early.
01:30You know, Hardy back before the pandemic, you know, I was a huge fan and wrote a lot of songs on my Gravel and Gold record.
01:36I'm a huge Hardy fan.
01:37I actually had to stop listening to his first record and the Crow record because I couldn't sleep at night.
01:42The songs are so good.
01:44They get stuck in your head.
01:45I had to, like, stop listening to his music.
01:47Around that time, I started listening to Zach Topp and, you know, just this bluegrass kid that's done good in country music.
01:53And his is the same way.
01:54His songs are so good.
01:55Certainly, you know, Sleep Like a Baby song and those songs get stuck in your head as well.
02:01But Zach is really fun on the road.
02:03He reminds me a lot of myself in the early years where, you know, you're just kind of living wide open and not afraid to crack a few beers in the middle of the day.
02:10You know, it doesn't matter what time it is.
02:12A.M., P.M.
02:13I also saw you were playing Pickleball Doubles, Team DBZT.
02:17You had a pretty disappointing season, right?
02:19We had a good season.
02:19Oh, you did?
02:20I thought it was not good.
02:21No, we ended on a high note.
02:22Oh, you did?
02:23All right.
02:24DBZT was taken on the Twin Towers.
02:27That's my fiddle player, Dan Hocalter, and my guitar player, Ben Helson, who's here.
02:31And it took us to the very last day of the tour in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to actually get the win.
02:37But DBZT got the win.
02:39And we never played another game.
02:41We haven't played since then.
02:42And I'm not sure if he's carrying that tradition out there on his tour now.
02:45But we had such a fun tour.
02:47I was going to say, I love the videos of you, like, getting him to do the ice bath with the cigarettes.
02:52Oh, my gosh.
02:53I mean, those guys.
02:54I think one negates the other, right?
02:55Those guys smoke and drink all day long.
02:57It's hilarious.
02:58Like I said, it reminds me a lot of me 20 years ago.
03:01Really darks.
03:03These guys are really fun.
03:04They've got a great band.
03:05Sax band is such a great band.
03:06It's such a fun group to be around.
03:08So I'm so happy to see their success.
03:09And Hardy, of course, is playing every big venue in the country.
03:12And definitely it's just like his career is like he's just taking a machete and he's just like carving out his own course.
03:18Yeah.
03:18You know, and I love what he does, too.
03:20So it's an honor to get a chance to.
03:22It's just fun to get a chance to be on stage with these two guys.
03:24You guys are going to have a very fun time out there.
03:26Yeah, absolutely.
03:27I also want to talk about your latest song, If You Know You Know.
03:29Tell me about this one.
03:31Yeah, I love this song.
03:32You know, I wrote it with my buddy Jim Beavers, who I've written songs like 5150 with and How Am I Doing and Sideways.
03:39It's just kind of a fun song about life on the road and just the life of a country artist and just someone that loves country music.
03:46So it's been a fun song to have out there, you know, streaming and get played on radio.
03:50And certainly we'll see how it feels next summer on the road when we're out there doing some dates with Luke Combs.
03:56Yeah, I was going to say the Luke tour.
03:58That'll be really fun.
03:59Yeah, it's going to be great.
04:00I'm excited for it.
04:02You know, it's been a while.
04:03It's been a few years, maybe 2012 maybe since I opened up for somebody.
04:08So it's kind of fun to go back and do it again.
04:11And I know the guy that's like one of the biggest guys in the game and playing stadiums across the country.
04:16And I'm a huge Luke Combs fan.
04:17I love his music.
04:18So still looking forward to going out there and just being part of his thing and supporting him in any way we can.
04:25Yeah, absolutely.
04:26I saw you were just in New York for the marathon.
04:28Your wife, Cassie, ran very quickly.
04:30She did.
04:31And you were like out on the course.
04:32I'm curious.
04:33Did anybody realize like, oh, my God, Dierks Bentley is standing next to me?
04:36Or were you able to like move through the crowd?
04:38Yeah, I mean, it's New York.
04:39You're able to kind of flow out there pretty good.
04:41I take a few pictures here and there.
04:43But really everyone's still focused on the runners.
04:44And I'm like in straight up like husband support mode.
04:49You know, it's hard if you ever, as anybody's ever watched a marathon, there's like a whole separate marathon you're doing as just a fan.
04:56Like you want to, you know, you're trying to see them at certain spots and you've got this tracker and you're trying to see where they're coming.
05:01The tracker isn't totally accurate to their bib.
05:04And so you're like, okay, she's got to be close.
05:05Now that you get the camera out because you want to videotape her for the kids.
05:09You're on content.
05:10And you're freaking out because there's so many people.
05:12And so it's a lot of work.
05:13And then I run across, you know, town with a backpack to Central Park.
05:16It was really a hard day for you.
05:18I think I should have gotten the medal, honestly, in the credit.
05:21Even though she ran a 753 pace for 26 miles, I think I should have gotten some sort of trophy, you know.
05:27That's insane.
05:28Your whole family is like extreme sports.
05:29I feel like you're always like on a bike or doing something crazy.
05:32Cass runs these like crazy fast marathons.
05:34Like very active family.
05:36Active, yeah.
05:37And my son is a big hockey player.
05:39Yes, and you're doing tons of travel hockey, right?
05:41Hockey family.
05:41Yeah, I'll be in Chicago tomorrow for hockey.
05:43And I'll be back.
05:44How about the girls?
05:45The girls are good.
05:46I got a little theater kid that does any theater things she can do.
05:49My oldest daughter is looking at colleges and my national anthem singer.
05:54And I was an Uber driver last night picking them up from Sabrina Carpenter.
05:58So I was one of them.
05:59Oh, my gosh.
05:59Oh, yeah.
06:00In Nashville, Tennessee.
06:01I went on Tuesday night.
06:03You did go, yeah.
06:04Yes, I did.
06:04And it was amazing.
06:05So I thought they had a great time.
06:05I was like pulled off to the side, the blink, the flashers going waiting for the.
06:09I will say to Sabrina, though, her concert gets that at 1045.
06:12It's pretty sweet.
06:13Oh, yeah.
06:13They run that.
06:14They run it like a.
06:15They know who their audience is.
06:16A lot of young girls got school the next day.
06:19Shout out to Sabrina.
06:20She knows how to pack a three-hour show into an hour and an hour and a half.
06:24I like her for that reason alone.
06:27She's great.
06:27I'm a big fan.
06:28You're in bed by 11, which is great.
06:30Yeah, thank you, Sabrina.
06:31Dierks Family, it's so great to see you.
06:32Thank you so much for being here.
06:33I know this is going to be a very fun night.
06:35Yeah, it's going to be awesome.
06:36I'm so excited to hear the crowd's reaction to Hardy and certainly Zach.
06:39It's going to be great.
06:40Yeah, there's going to be some good laughs out there.
06:42I know it.
06:43Yeah.
06:43Yeah.
06:43Yeah.
06:43Yeah.
06:44Yeah.
06:49Yeah.
