00:06yeah we've had a big summer and a big fall and kind of we call it fall I guess our fall tour
00:14and we're kind of done with that now and uh finally gonna take a breath you know but you
00:21know yeah in the studio making new music and a lot of music to talk about but I want to talk
00:27about what some of the stuff that you've been doing I saw that you had your big dove hunt oh that
00:31looked like fun well it's the best in Tennessee I think really Luke Bryan's pretty jealous is
00:37why he's about a mile as a crow flies down the road from me what why ain't got no doves and you got
00:45all the doves you know oh my that's a good Luke Bryan impression I love everyone does a Luke
00:50Bryan impression like I wish I could compile them I did one year for his birthday but like
00:54that's so funny yeah we had he come over for it he yeah he popped over for a while and said he's a
01:00not new dadgummit why is all the doves over here so I mean we got the same guy that kind of like
01:08helps us like well because it's the whole thing I've gone to a dove hunt before and I've just
01:11observed observed but it's social thing there's a lot going on like you've got to set the field
01:17right for some time before I go all year long and the doves are there and then we only hunt
01:23maybe twice that's two months but that's why everybody wants to come because it's like
01:30I mean do you eat the dove oh yes I don't shoot nothing I don't eat I here's my thing I went to
01:36the dove hunt I tried the dove and I I grew up eating a lot of like game and deer and all so I
01:41couldn't get down with the dove it wasn't cooked right okay maybe that's it trust me you know how
01:46some like you could cook a fish too much and it tastes too fishy yeah if you don't do it like
01:52if you overcook it I do believe I like politely spit it back into a napkin and I've never done
01:56well you you would not do that if I if I okay next dove hunt how are you what do you do with them what
02:01do you how do you prepare them well you do them different ways but I like to just do it simple and
02:05actually not just breast them out but like actually breast it off the bone it's a little tiny little
02:11nugget like tiny mm-hmm one inch by like a half inch and like little salt peppers and soy sauce or
02:18something like just grill it on its own and all the people go I need bacon wrapped you know yeah I
02:23think that's what I had stuff and it's like man well what's the point yeah this is just a precious
02:28little piece of meat that's amazing and keep it simple that's what you'll like it okay all right
02:37I like this I like this I'm at we're having like a conversation about right
02:40I love it though how are Sarah and the kids they're amazing uh you know they're in school and
02:48and uh well I was just at uh they have a chapel service on Tuesdays every every Tuesday morning
02:55like right before school and parents come you know yeah and they have like a little band up there
03:00so Riker is up there playing guitar like he's back there jamming on guitar then he broke his arm so
03:06now he was just singing this past week and uh but it's really cool to just you know every time I'm
03:13home I take them to school and I pick them up because when I'm gone Sarah's having to do all that
03:18yeah yeah so when I if I'm home I don't care what I'm doing how late I'm doing it in the studio or
03:23whatever I'm taking them to school in the mornings you know and I'm most of the time picking them up but
03:30um they're awesome and Sarah I mean it's you know that's that life this is that part of life you
03:36know we got a 17 year old oh my god almost 12 year old Riker will be 12 December 4th and truly just
03:45turned 8th June 2nd so is Dakota starting to look at schools I mean he's looking at all I mean I don't
03:51know where his head I mean he's a beast yeah he's doing all kind of stuff we got like a merch company
03:57thing they were like hey you want to do like talk to your friends about this little side merch company
04:02t-shirt thing you know and he's just hustling I mean he's and he's like he's like hey daddy I saw
04:07this thing on Facebook marketplace it's a shed they want to just give it to somebody if they would just
04:12come get it and I could maybe sell it for like you know $300 I'm like well you're gonna spend eight
04:17hours getting it down but if you want to go do it go you know and so like he's just he's humping it
04:24like he's kind of like kind of growing into a man he really is that's gotta be wild for you to
04:29watch this he really is oh my gosh and then is Riker like this is the musical child that I'm guessing
04:34is very musical okay um he's like Dave Grohl he wants to be on that stage I don't care if I'm
04:41um he wants to race race cars legitimately we call he's always been your wild child he's he's the
04:49wild like he but he's got the hugest heart like empathy like so he's very um sensitive too but
04:56he he's like we call Joey Logano like one of my buddies like the great you know one of the biggest
05:01race car drivers in the world he's like daddy I don't want to race I'm like son you don't want to
05:06race he's gonna break your mama's heart he will not he will not stop he's like I mean he's done soccer
05:11and football and this and that and the cross country he's like daddy I want to race I said you know
05:16what let's call my buddy so we called him and he said can we call him and just ask for my Christmas
05:21present can we call your friend and ask him what I should do if I want to be a racer I said we won't
05:28have to do that for your Christmas present we can call him right now so we did and Joey was like oh
05:33I mean Joey was so like yes this is what you need to do and so I mean Riker's you know kids you know
05:41they kind of move they kind of ebb and flow and they change their minds he won't Riker is
05:46the wild he wants to go fast as Ricky Bobby would say oh my god that is hysterical and then truly
05:55just running the household still running everything she is she's we go on our dates and like we just
06:03wrote a song we write we go on our date she wants to shoot her gun she'll shoot your eye out at 75
06:08yards yeah clean it she wants to clean every the surprise she wants she then she will go to like
06:15maybe go have some Mexican food then we'll go bowling and then we come back to the farm you know
06:21and mama would want us to be in bed by nine but we get back at eight or nine and she goes all right
06:25daddy let's go to the studio and so we've done this multiple times and every time we go we write a
06:31little song and I said little songs but like the the three that we have written in the last one I was
06:38like I was just like she's like let's go write write write this thing and then sing it and so
06:44I'll have some come over and we just record it and I'm telling you so she got I go how much do I love
06:50you she went how much do I love you and I went how much do I love you and she went how much do I love
06:59you too and I was like oh oh my so it's just we have those dates and so she is a she can sing she's
07:11got perfect pitch she could dance she can shoot she can she's kind of like an all do all she's so
07:19smart you know wow you know talk about like the most well-rounded little lady I love that oh my god
07:28that makes me so happy it just sounds like everybody's doing so good and you're you've got
07:32all this stuff going you were saying you just cut seven more songs yeah for the project you already
07:37turned in so how's that working out it's good actually well it's good because you know the date
07:42got moved back to like early summer okay and so they were like hey I mean because I had just been
07:49playing a bunch of I mean I wrote all these songs in the last few months and especially over like a
07:56three-week period I just got on this roll and they're all like just so good I'm like man we
08:02don't want to sit them around and they were like let go if you can get them turned in by thanksgiving
08:06go cut them you know and we'll just add them to it because people you know these days they just want
08:11more to listen to and that's okay I love it you know I don't want the songs I sit around so
08:15that's what we did we we Jared and Neiman and I you know we're recording this record together and
08:21he's helping me produce it with my engineer and co-producer Cody and and we cut all this stuff
08:29two week three two and a half weeks ago and I did it intentionally to have everything kind of recorded
08:37in the moment so that we wouldn't have to go back and do all a million overdubs and spend a year
08:42so I got everything pretty much recorded other than me singing and maybe me playing some guitar
08:47and so I play guitar the last couple days got it pretty much knocked out and I'm gonna go do a
08:53vocal this afternoon and do a couple more vocals and then basically just mix it it'll be done
08:57and it's so awesome and we might have even found a new a new song like a new album title
09:06oh wow so like there's a song called Sunriser okay and you know I was talking to my bus driver one
09:14day we were up writing and someone's coming up I was about to go to bed you know and I was like you
09:21know what I was like you got to earn a sunrise I said anybody can see a sunset but you either stay
09:28up all night and see a sunrise or you get up early you know what I mean wow one way or the other
09:35and one of the lines is like it doesn't matter which end of the candle that you burn
09:39it's gonna be something that you earned holy that's good so it might it might be the album
09:46title Sunriser is a good album title I like that a lot it's kind of like a Dirk's you know
09:52yeah Sunriser it's a right like parties like night shift like you said like you gotta earn it
10:02whatever side of it you're on so that's I like that what I'm doing and that's what I'm doing now
10:06it's actually I might I still got to do a little bit of stuff on that but like I said we tracked
10:11everything to where we didn't have to do a whole lot of work afterwards other than just mixing it you
10:16know and uh so we're so we're doing talk to me about this single killed the man outside cut which
10:22not something not something you do very often so I imagine this really got you well it's well
10:26it's funny you know I look back the the biggest songs in my career you know and I compared it to I
10:35was like you know Garth you know he's an amazing songwriter and he wrote 90 of all the stuff he
10:41ever put out but he did not write the dance he did not write friends in low places
10:48and so I always took that as a as like a okay you better be listening to outside songs because who
10:57knows what his career would have been maybe those songs you know and so I drive your truck
11:04you know drinking class
11:08hard to love uh boy a lot so crazy yeah like the songs that you know some of the biggest songs in
11:18my career are outside songs and it's because I just I'm not an idiot like these are the I love to
11:25write all my songs I do and I think I got great songs that I write but man when I hear a song like
11:31that when you hear I drive your truck I mean what there's a lot of people I think that they just have
11:38to write all their songs and stuff and uh I remember uh Chase Chase Rice actually told me he said man
11:47he said I decided it was it was uh years back but he said man I decided to uh just stop trying to like
12:00write everything and I just wanted to get everything else cut like just from outside and like it's
12:04because biggest record you know and so I've I've just learned from that and I love to write my stuff
12:10but I love to find those songs but they do have to be me yeah and this song is you killed the man
12:16when I heard this song obviously I like to walk the line of something that's not like right down
12:21the middle of everything that's happening I really try to do something that's a little bit
12:26different and hopefully will be around for more than a day you know what I mean but the lyric
12:34obviously I mean it's got such a cool story but there was the coolest thing about it for me was like
12:38when it got to that chorus and it and it didn't do this big lift it didn't do this big Lee Bryce like
12:43I'm gonna sing this big chorus you know it kind of simmers down and something about that made me feel
12:52like the whole song as a whole was just really special and it is it really is and so then when
12:58we cut the record we really dialed into that and uh uh Ben did a great job you know just helping us
13:07dial that in and I mean I we just got the video done oh and it is really cool what was the treatment
13:15for the video can you give us like a sneak of that it's kind of hard because it's it's like one of
13:20those it's like the sixth sense oh like you think it's one thing in the end there's a huge twist all
13:24of a sudden at the end you go holy crap like now I understand like but it's almost like something
13:31you have to watch a few times you go wait a minute and you go watch it again you go oh wow
13:35you know it kind of all makes sense you can't believe it kind of one of those things but it
13:41we went through a lot of treatments actually I mean there was like the thought of this new man
13:45obviously that's what the song is about killed the man is killing the old man and and and arising as a
13:53new man you know and uh there was a lot of thoughts of even like baptism you know like coming up and a new
14:00man and stuff like so all of it kind of got combined and it just got to be really cool and
14:06interesting I love to make videos that are a little different you know like more than just the song
14:12itself you know because if it was just a video of the song itself then who cares yeah so anyway yeah
14:19it's I'm so excited about it and it's it's coming very soon that's exciting and I just I feel like this
14:26fits your catalog so well like to me this song is like a cousin or a distant cousin of I don't dance
14:32like the what this woman did and like changed my life and what Sarah has done for you oh gosh are
14:38you kidding me yeah I mean I mean that is what the song is about and it's um and even musically you
14:45know it kind of it just is what we do you know it's kind of got the gallop it's what you do so well
14:52the gallop yeah it's always like Lee he did a good job playing it but you're gonna need to
14:56replace that with your your your right hand your gallop on that acoustic you know
15:01you gotta lee brice-ify it what else can you say about the record like is there a direction a concept
15:10like where do you feel this era is for you I really feel like it's just like it's always been like
15:15this is and it's actually cool that we got to cut these other songs because we've been making this
15:22record for two years and so it's a it's a snapshot you know of my life and where I am as a man and a
15:29daddy and I used to just be where I am as an artist right before I had a wife and before I had kids and
15:35then before I you know and then moved to the next stage but every record has moved forward and that's
15:40that's all this is is another snapshot of where I'm at and like I'm thinking forward and there's
15:47there's some stuff on there that's like really honest I'm just getting more and more honest older
15:52I get I'm like you know I I'm ready to just say what I want to say and not like you know think about
16:01well what if everyone doesn't like this or what if every you can't please everybody I just want to be
16:06honest and honor myself and honor my family and and so it's there's some there's some stuff on there
16:12that's really cool and interesting and I can't wait for uh we've got a I've got a song on there
16:17that um one's called country alone and uh but then we've got one that's called uh
16:26uh country nowadays I'm I don't even know if that's a title yet we've got to figure out exactly
16:32yeah I'll figure it out but uh it's gonna be really fun for people to hear oh that makes me
16:39excited I I've always been such a fan of your music and I like it's you know it was a soundtrack
16:43of me like partying drinking through college a lot of fun years so I'm excited to hear that and then
16:49I know that you're going to be out on the road again next spring what are you excited about for
16:54that well I mean you know we'll we we haven't decided yet we may you know we've done the uh
17:01you me and my guitar tour which has been one of my favorite things in my whole life magical
17:06for the last couple years and uh and we've only done like six weeks of it so we haven't it's not
17:13like we've even touched the whole country you know we've only played it so many times so it has
17:18plenty of room left to live because it's so unique I mean it's me for two and a half hours alone
17:27you know with 15 guitars on the stage and a piano and like different stations and I go through my life
17:34I haven't decided yet if I'm gonna do that again this year maybe give it a rest for this year but
17:39you know we'll we'll get back in back back on track pretty early you know we're we've always been the
17:46people who when a lot of people don't work we want to work I mean I just I don't know maybe from daddy
17:53like it's work you know you got to work to get the things done and like yeah somebody else somebody
18:00else is gonna outwork you you know and so yeah it's gonna be it's gonna be it but it's gonna be
18:06nice I will say kind of got to we got done with this summer and the the fall ish and so just got a
18:11couple more shows and I'll be in the studio so it'll be nice to have some time at home
18:16you know uh and then we'll get back on it really january february we'll be back on it won't be
18:23springtime it'll be yeah really we'll be I mean heck we go to canada in the winter time if we have
18:28yeah exactly and I know you're looking forward to I'm sure like breathing a little bit with the
18:33holidays coming what do you guys have are you staying here for thanksgiving do you guys do a big
18:37oh yeah we'll do I think we're good this year we we've always gone down to my my parents and like
18:44my mama's sisters and all all of them back in south carolina for thanksgiving because it's like been
18:50a really big deal and but you know a lot of mama's sisters they aren't doing as well and so we're gonna
18:59we're gonna stay in town this year um and have kind of start our own you know louis louis my brother
19:07just had a new baby raylyn and uh we'll just kind of maybe have a little a little hometown
19:13thanksgiving and then christmas who knows i mean sarah sometimes you know women's mind they they change
19:19you know uh she's like well let's go on vacation for christmas no i want to be home for christmas
19:25so we'll figure it out yes but have you gotten the christmas lists from the kids yet and they turn
19:29those in well actually a little bit they're just starting to do that and i you know i had a song out
19:35one of my christmas songs a couple years ago called uber driver it was santa was my uber driver and it's
19:40a true story but he literally that santa from virginia beach texted me yesterday it was like hey
19:49just think about your chicken oh my god and i thought you know what i need to have him like facetime the
19:54kids yes christmas because that's what he does but he's also a drummer in a cover band like in virginia
20:01beach like and he's an uber driver all that when he's not working for sewing he's not a hippie like
20:08oh my god hey man just think about you bro but like he's the best santa so how is that not a hallmark
20:15movie yet i'm telling you it may be one day it was hilarious so funny oh my gosh it is so good to see
