00:00Technically speaking, we're about at the halfway point in fall, so we're about closer to winter than we are to summer. But the winter weather, well, it's coming sooner than later. So now is the best time to be preparing your home, be preparing your cars and just start thinking about cold weather safety and all those things that we start to worry about in the winter. Let's talk about how to prepare your home. So first of all, you want to make sure that the heat is staying in, the cold air is staying out. So of course, insulation is important, but also
00:29you want to make sure you're caulking and weather stripping your doors and windows. If you've already done this, just check them, make sure everything is up to tip top shape. Then outside the house, think about shingles. Are there any that got damaged or loose or maybe they're missing from severe thunderstorms or other factors? And then also check your roof. You want to make sure there's nothing that's going to lead to leaks when snow is piling up outside. Also, a lot of leaves have been falling, especially in places like the northeast. Check your gutters, make sure they're
00:59clear of leaves because that's just going to cause problems down the line. And then there's the trees. We've had a lot of wind events that this is probably already top of mind for you, but you want to make sure you're checking those tree branches. Is there anything that could be weighed down by icicles or snow? Remove them now before it becomes a problem. As we get even colder, you want to make sure you're taking steps to prevent frozen pipes.
01:19You want to make sure you are removing, draining and storing outdoor hoses. Make sure that the cold water drip from faucets when it is getting very cold outside and don't leave your heat any lower than 55 degrees. Even if you're going out of town, you don't want to come back to a frozen pipe that leads to problems. Then there's your car. You should be checking your tire pressure once a month. I know a lot of cars now it'll just tell you when you have that low tire pressure, but make sure you're checking up on those. Test your battery. You don't want to be out in the cold with a dead battery and having to call
01:49someone to jumpstart your car.
