00:00Jacob Frey wins third term as Minneapolis mayor after showdown with socialist opponent.
00:06Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey secured a third term Wednesday,
00:10defeating Democratic Socialist Omar Fateh and 13 other challengers in the city's ranked choice election.
00:16According to the Associated Press, Frey led Fateh by about 10 points after the first round,
00:21but fell short of the 50% plus one threshold,
00:23and final but unofficial results showed Frey with 50.03% to Fateh's 44.37%,
00:31improving on his 49.1% finish in 2021.
00:35Under Minneapolis's ranked choice system, candidates are eliminated in rounds,
00:39and second and third choices are reallocated until someone crosses the majority mark.
00:45Frey and Fateh topped the 15-candidate field,
00:47and the Reverend Dwayne Davis and businessman Jazz Hampton also drew notable support.
00:52From right now through my final seconds as mayor,
00:55I will work tirelessly to make our great city a place where everyone,
00:59regardless of who you are or where you come from,
01:02can build a brilliant life in an affordable home and a safe neighborhood, Frey said in a statement.
01:07Fateh congratulated Frey, saying,
01:09They may have won this race,
01:11but we have changed the narrative about what kind of city Minneapolis can be.
01:15He added that,
01:16Truly affordable housing, workers' rights, and public safety rooted in care are now central to the city's political conversation.
01:25Fateh, Davis, and Hampton had urged their supporters to rank one another and not Frey, but the strategy fell short.
01:32Frey has led Minneapolis since 2018, including through unrest following George Floyd's 2020 murder,
01:38and worked with state and federal officials to reform a police department that lost hundreds of officers.
01:43Fateh hoped to become Minneapolis' first Muslim and Somali-American mayor.
01:48The city has the largest Somali population in the United States.
01:52Officials said more than 147,000 residents voted,
01:57the highest turnout ever for a city election,
01:59with 55% of registered voters participating,
02:03and the city council will certify the results Monday.
02:06In St. Paul,
02:07Cowley had defeated Melvin Carter after trailing in the first round.
02:11She will become the first woman and first Hmong-American mayor,
02:15and the city has an all-female city council.
