00:00I'm Sean Pendergast. He is Seth Payne. Hello. How are you? Yo, what's up? Um, yo, yo,
00:06what's up? The Texans are, the Texans are banged up and injured. And I just want everybody to,
00:11that saw their injury reports to know and understand that the Jaguars are equally banged
00:17up. Yeah. And, uh, it's, uh, if you're going to handicap this game, they've literally handicapped
00:22multiple players on both sides. Lots of handicap. It does feel like an old school. Uh, yeah. Yeah.
00:28They're like, uh, that's a, how do we weaken the, this team a little bit? You know,
00:31I'd box this one in the knee, mate. You know what you do to support that? That's what my bookie
00:36friends in, in England. Yeah. To support your, uh, to support the Texans today. Uh,
00:43take the day off since they had, they had like 12 guys call in sick yesterday, not literal sick,
00:50like quad injury sick. Yeah. Concussion sick. Uh, there's probably a knee in there somewhere.
00:56You're it's it. Are you looking at the injury report? I'm looking at the Jaguars injury report
01:01just because I just said, that's what I knew. Uh, they have a, like Deami Brown,
01:04their wide receiver that did some damage versus Texas. He's injured. Brian Thomas jr.
01:08Is injured. Um, they had, by the time they finished the Raiders game last week,
01:12they had five of their week one starters out on the field. One of them, five out there.
01:17Yeah. Only five guys out on the field. And I think five, four of them are probably going to,
01:22there's a good chance they miss this week. Some of them were like Eric Murray's on IR.
01:25Yeah. Um, but, uh, uh, one of them was, uh, what's his name? The defensive end Trayvon,
01:30um, Walker Walker. Thank you. Trayvon Walker had punched somebody. He got ejected. Okay. He's
01:36healthy. He didn't break his hand or anything. Damn it. Damn it. But the Texans, you know,
01:39the Texans injury list is a little bit longer. Well, there, there were the concerning thing.
01:43We'll get to CJ Stroud in a second. We'll, you know, spoiler alert. A lot of you have probably
01:47seen this already. CJ is not going to play on Sunday. Not that we were expecting him to, but
01:51D'Amico confirmed it. In fact, let's play this. Now we go through the rest of the injury list here.
01:55The walking wounded for the Texans. Some not walking either. Here's, uh, D'Amico
02:00Ryans yesterday confirming CJ will not play this week. For where we are right now with the
02:04concussion protocol, I do not see CJ playing this week. Okay. And then he reconfirmed it
02:09a couple of questions later. He is not going to play this week. Also confirmed.
02:13Kyami Fairbairn will not be kicking this week. Yeah. Kyami is dealing with a quad injury right
02:19now. We'll see how he progresses right now. We have Matt. Matt's been in the league. He's kicked
02:23on a game. Decided to be able to get a guy of his caliber here. Uh, knowing that Amy will be down.
02:31Okay. So that was the end. Yeah. Yeah. Like I'm listening to him. Like, all right,
02:34maybe Amy's kicking. We'll see how he progresses. And then at the end he goes now knowing that Amy will be
02:38down. And then somebody fortunately, and I apologize, somebody follows up. And so, so just
02:46to be clear, you say Amy is down. He will, or won't be kicking. Oh no, he's not going to be
02:50kicking. Oh God. No. It's not like a doctor, like giving you a long, uh, a long detailed
02:56explanation of how, how he performed the surgery. And at the end he was like, but it, but I mean,
03:00he died. Yeah. Building up your hopes. Is that what you were waiting for? He's building up your hopes
03:05too. He's like, we'll see how he progresses. I'm like, Oh, Oh, and he'll be down.
03:08Oh, and then the reconfirm. Bam. Like the left hits you. And then the right hits you.
03:12Yeah. And look, this is an offense as, uh, as, uh, as we all know it is, it's death by a thousand
03:17field goals. And you, it's hard if you've got this guy who's been on how many different teams
03:23has he been? I can't even count. Who was a Texans player. We had a couple of years ago
03:26who had basically been on every single team. Was it a kicker? No, it was somebody else. Somebody,
03:30one of our listeners will remember. It was kind of astounding when you looked at the, the totality.
03:35Yeah. And that's a little bit like this fella. This guy, Matt writes, I'll find it. We'll need
03:38a whole segment to go through all the teams, but, um, this is concerning. These are the CJ
03:43Stroud and Kymie Fairbairn are generally speaking, the two guys that generate points for this team.
03:47Yeah. You know, CJ with his arm and Kymie with his legs. See, when you stall out on the one yard line,
03:53if you, if you choose to kick on fourth down, which I think I've turned into a person that with this
03:58team. Yeah. Go ahead and just, uh, kick it, please. Yeah. So it's, that's a 24 yard field goal from
04:03the one yard, 24 yard field goal. Can you handle that? I'm guessing you can handle that.
04:09Matt, right. Yeah. I have enough teams of enough teams of, uh, you know, you want his,
04:13you want his numbers and fit to have Cody posted his numbers. I'll get them here. My, my, uh, my,
04:17my Google spreadsheet is acting up right now, but his numbers aren't that bad. Yeah. I mean,
04:22he's no, no, no. I kind of look at kickers as commodities every now and then there's a great
04:27one, but I generally just, I don't, I don't form an emotional attachments to them. They're just
04:32widgets to me. Probably smart. They're just widgets. That's probably all right. Good. You're
04:36like, I'll just, I'll choose. You better not screw up because then I'll learn your name. Okay. He's
04:40the, can I titillate you with some of this in Matt Matthew, right? Who, by the way, this, this game
04:45is a one and a half point spread for the Texans. This game could very well come down to the two
04:50kickers. Yes. Um, he's played for seven different teams. Okay. He's got an 87 and a half percent
04:56conversion rate. He's 56 of 64 for his career. That's pretty good. Yeah. Um, he's seven of 11
05:03from 50 yards or more. Sounds like a steady, reliable convenience store. I know he's missed
05:10just one from under 40 yards. So I feel like Davis mills and Matthew Wright are kind of in the same
05:15boat this week where with mills, it's like, don't turn the ball over. Yeah. Right. Like you're going to,
05:20if you make a few plays, big place here and there, but this is going to be a close to the vest defensive
05:25game. Yeah. Do not turn the ball over. If you're Matthew, right? This new kicker, like, okay,
05:30just don't miss from under 40. If you know, if we, if I don't know if you've been watching the
05:35Texans, your, your new teammates, Matthew, they stall out a lot in the red zone. Yeah. A lot.
05:41Yeah. And stay loose on the sideline. Yes. You're going to be needed. That's major. He were ready
05:47to kick five field goals. So you be ready. And like we're telling Davis, don't turn the ball over.
05:51We're telling you do it. Cause a missed field goal under 40 is basically like a turnover,
05:55you know, it's like a turnover on downs. So, um, don't do that. He's missed just two extra
06:00points in 45 attempts. I feel like that's better than Kaimi has been over the last couple of years.
06:04They warm on the sideline. Use that aerodyne bike. Um, the exercise bands. Yeah, man. I think
06:10Brian Pitt, Brian Pittman used to have like a long workout routine. He'd do on the sidelines. I believe
06:16I remember, I know Brian listens to the show. At least sometimes you can text me if I'm wrong on this,
06:21cause my brother's friends, uh, they had good seats. So one of our games, like right up behind
06:25the bench and they were fascinated. You're marveling. Yeah. All the stuff he did during the,
06:31the downtime career long of 59 yards for Matthew. Sorry. Brian Pitt was a long snapper,
06:36not a kicker, but a specialist specialist. Yeah. Um, career long of 59 yards for Matthew,
06:42right? That's good. That's not the record breaking 68 yards of cam little. Wait, no cam. Uh,
06:49what's a little. Yeah. Cam little cam little. Yeah. Um, cam little, the Jaguars kicker kicked
06:54the 68 yarder broke the record, but he also had been really erratic leading up to that. Yeah. If
07:00the Texans have an advantage right now, it really might be that this journeyman kicker might be more
07:06steady and reliable than the guy who just broke the record for longest field goal. Yeah. Cause cam
07:11little was just, I talked to Bucky Brooks yesterday who does their sideline commentary for the Jaguars.
07:15And he said before going into that game. And before that kick cam little looked like a broken
07:22man. Oh, like in warmups. No, just he'd been so erratic in games that, um, you're wondering
07:30worried about his confidence. Okay. Yeah. But he went out and nailed that one. I maybe, you know
07:34what? You can have your big boomer 68. I don't mean boomer age. I'm talking like, you know, your big
07:39leg 68 yard guy. We'll take our guy that just knocks down the mid range. Listen back in my day, man,
07:44if you had the field goal record, if you had the field goal record back in my day, you only had
07:50one and a half feet. All right. You had half a foot and you hammered the ball like a Jack hammer
07:58my damn or like a, like a, like a horse. Yeah. Like a Clydesdale that had kicked it with its
08:03hoof. Look at you, Kim little with all five of your toes. Ooh, that was the weirdest thing
08:08growing up. Wasn't it just now and then you'd see the pictures of Tom Dempsey. That was the
08:12first time I ever double check social media to see if that was fake news or not. This
08:17Dempsey guy. If that had come on. Yeah. If it was in the age of social media, you would
08:21have thought for sure that was fake. Yeah. It was cause the kids were a hundred percent
08:24serious here. He had half a foot, half a foot. And the picture that was always, did you
08:27get the Guinness book of world records every year? Like I did it when you were doing book
08:31orders at school and you'd always thumb open to the picture of the two fat twins on the
08:36mopeds. Right. Uh, that wasn't my kink, but yeah, no, no, no. But I'm saying like,
08:41are they still the fattest twins ever? Oh, I don't remember that. Yeah. They were the
08:45fattest twins ever. I got, sorry. I got distracted by the mopeds. I didn't realize that they weren't
08:49the fattest twins to ride mopeds. They were always riding mopeds in the picture. Yeah. It
08:53was, they were always riding mopeds. Um, the dude who had the longest fingernails. Oh,
08:57what the hell Guinness book of world records? And for those discussing the guy had to carry
09:02his hands around on a pouch. It looked like he had five snakes. So that guy, there was always
09:08the picture of the tallest human being ever standing next to the shortest adult ever. That
09:12was always a good one. And, um, and yeah, and then Tom Dempsey with, uh, with half a boot
09:17sitting there kicking a 63 yard field goal for the Saints by far the least freakish of any of the
09:22people you just mentioned. He would have drawn the smallest crowd at the circus of all
09:27of them. Step right up and see my half a foot kicker. I'm like, no, I'm over here looking
09:31at snake hands. He lived in a time when there was just a boatload of world war one and world
09:35war two veterans walking around who, you know, had just, yeah, it's true. It wasn't, it wasn't
09:41the only thing remarkable about him was that he was clubbing, literally clubbing field goals
09:46through, uh, through uprights from ridiculous. And these weren't looking, these weren't these
09:51juiced up modern balls they're using now. All right. No. And he did it back when the goalposts
09:56were on the goal line, not the back. So that was a kick. Oh, that must have been an impressive
10:00sight. Yeah.
10:00From how far back it went. It was. So he kicked it from his own 37 yard line. Cause it was a 63
10:06yarder. I tell you, but it was about to have a club foot old sethers. Somebody left a pile of
10:11cookies. I almost moved it. Here comes the diabetes amputation sometime soon. It's a, it's so it was
10:17in the chair that Patrick Creighton sits in and it's one of those clear cartons of cookies that you get
10:22at Kroger H E B. It has like 20, the multicolored M and M, the multicolored M and M cookie is strong.
10:27I'll help you out with it. I'll eat a couple of them. I guess as opposed to like, there's never
10:31like a uniformly colored M and M's really. So yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. So that's so,
10:36so there's like 12 cookies still left in there. I give you till hour number three to my days.
10:41There's a lot of calories right there. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I could do it. Cook Greek yogurt on top of
10:47one of them and call it a day. That'll make you feel like sandwich, a Greek yogurt sandwich.
10:52It's like an ice cream sandwich. That's what I feel my worst about myself is when I can't avoid the
10:58temptation of the gas station ice cream sandwich. It's the two, the Nestle's cookies. Yes.
11:04So good. It's not just an ice cream. It's not a thin weight for a chocolate. No,
11:07it's two gigantic cookies with a bunch of ice cream. Oh my God. Oh my God. I can't possibly
11:15finish this 12 minute drive without three of those in my belly to have them. Got to have them.
11:21Then I got to go out of my way to throw, to throw the wrappers away somewhere. My wife won't see
11:26them. I got to go find a third party garbage can. Yeah. Shame. Um, it is a long injury list for the
11:33Texans. We, we talked about CJ. We talked about Kiami. Will Anderson popped up on there. He didn't
11:37practice yesterday. Uh, Jalen Petrie didn't practice yesterday. There were a handful of
11:43others. Titus Howard. Titus didn't get a, he will not play designation. So will and will
11:50Anderson has a quad, um, but he sat out Wednesday practices before. So you don't necessarily
11:56like sometimes they just need to dial will back a little bit. Like, yeah, you know, like,
12:00man, just like they did in high school and they had, uh, they had to do it for his team's
12:04protection in high school. Yep. I feel like for Will, the protection of the little
12:07kids, like with Will, when they, you know, they monitor everybody with their GPS tracking
12:10and everything. And Will's, I always wondered about that. Like, man, if you got the wrong
12:14kind of guys on your team, they'll just go ahead and tank it during practice to look like
12:18they're overworked. Oh yeah. Like Will's not the kind of guy that you have to worry about
12:22with that. No, no, I'm not. Not at all. It's like a different type of speed difference.
12:30Yeah. Um, Nick Chubb didn't practice yesterday. Titus is a, we'll see. And he has a concussion.
12:36Also. I thought it was interesting that CJ is definitely out, but Titus Howard did not
12:40get a definitely out from D'Amico. I think there's, um, I wonder if with CJ caution. Yeah.
12:47With a quarterback, I would almost always probably lean towards man. Yeah. Especially
12:52it just leave it. Give it. If he's cleared on Friday, just, he needs another week ever
12:58since, ever since Brian Horner cleared the concussion protocol and came out and looked
13:01like he had a concussion. Like he just wasn't remember that game. He just wasn't processing
13:05the ball. He wasn't processing things. Well, I do. And I'm sure they've improved the protocol
13:09since then. But, um, yeah, it's just, I, I wouldn't mess around with the quarterback.
13:13All right. So Davis Mills is going to start a quarterback. Here's D'Amico Ryan's on what
13:17are the expectations of Davis Mills? Yeah. What I expect from Davis is to, you know,
13:21do what he's done in the past. He's, he started games in his league before, so there's nothing
13:26new for him. Uh, but it is a benefit for him being able to get the reps, get the, get
13:32the reps throughout practice, uh, getting the walkthrough, getting every single rep that
13:36he can get, you know, getting on the same page with the receivers, getting the, the huddle,
13:41getting the snap, all those little things, right? Getting the operation down the proper
13:45way. He's done a good job of that today. He did an outstanding job. Uh, thought we were
13:50efficient in and out of the huddle, uh, at the line of scrimmage. He did a great job
13:54of communicating. Uh, so I'm, I'm excited to see, you know, Davis go play. Yeah. The,
13:59the week of preparation is big and it's, I don't think that needs a boatload of explanation.
14:06And you just, uh, it's tough to go in and be as sharp and as crisp and everything. Yeah.
14:10There's a, there's a reason that CJ Stroud gets a bunch of reps. And it's a reason the
14:13backup quarterback doesn't get that many reps in practice. Cause it's really important for the
14:17quarterbacks and the receivers. I think this, this week and D'Amico touches on this in, um,
14:22one of these clips here, the, uh, all the pre-snap stuff is good. And you know, Davis has done all
14:29that. And this offense has some similarities to Bill O'Brien's offense. Um, so, which they were,
14:35you know, they were running a version of that with Tim Kelly back in 21. So I think that the big
14:41question is just, does he, is he calm, cool and collected after the snap? And it looked like
14:45during the game, he was just kind of sped up a little bit and going, he was doing a good job
14:50getting the ball out of his hands really fast, but there were times where he needs to slow it down.
14:54And maybe with CJ, it's like, Hey, CJ, take the first read when it's there with Davis. I think it
14:59might've been like, let's get this ball out. I'm, I'm throwing to the first read, whether it's open
15:03or not. He threw a lot of tight window throws when, when he did have time and he could have waited
15:08and just, for sure, I'm doing a little bit. The thing that concerns, and we'll, we have that
15:11cut right here. In fact, let's play it here. And I'll give you my thoughts about Davis. This is
15:14D'Amico. What did you see from Davis in, uh, in the game last week? Davis is a, he's a super,
15:20super smart guy, sharp guy, just seeing how he operates in the huddle. And they just seeing how
15:25he can fix things when we're not all the way, right. When guys are coming out of the huddle,
15:30they have questions. Davis gets it fixed very quickly, uh, articulates it very well in the huddle.
15:35And now it's about post snap, like post snap. Can we go through, can we make the proper reads? Can
15:40we get to the right spot with the football? And can we just execute, right? We just all have to do our
15:48job. Nobody has to step up, do anything different. Everybody just has to execute and do their job.
15:53What they're, what they're here for is to go out and play good football. And that's all we're expecting
15:57them to do. I love how D'Amico makes the quarterback position sound like he's just the jackhammer guy at a
16:02construction site. Davis doesn't have to do much. He should do his job. He's just a quarterback in
16:06the NFL. Like what's the big deal? If you go back and look at, this was his second best quarterback
16:12rating ever. This was his highest quarterback rating in a win. It was the chargers at the Texans
16:17the day after Christmas. That was a big upset, man. That was the Cully year and the chargers were
16:21still in the hunt for the post season. Texans defeated the chargers 41 to 29. That was the
16:27Rex Burkhead game. I think Rex Burkhead went off in that. Burkhead had a hundred and I think it was
16:32106, 149 yards and two tutties. I was like, I think we got a future with this young whippersnapper
16:38Burkhead felt toting the rock, felt dirty saying tutty. I hate that two touchdowns. Yeah. Yeah.
16:45It sounds too much like Teddy, like a Teddy, like Rex Burkhead was wearing a cute little Teddy
16:49as he scored. He ran for 149 yards. Um, but that was like, so Davis Mills on the day was 21 for 27,
16:56254 yards, two touchdowns. Davis was good. The last five games of his whole, the whole last
17:02five games of his rookie year. He was good. Yeah. They went two and three and he, and he had good
17:06numbers that, but that was his best one. You're absolutely right. Like if, like if the last five
17:10games of rookie year, Davis Mills walks through the door, the Texans will win the game on Sunday
17:14against Jacksonville. I think this is a, they're favored. I mean, it's a very winnable game for the
17:19Texans, regardless of who's at court. No. And both these teams, I think their fan bases feel pretty similar.
17:26Except, but it doesn't, they they've got issues. You know, Trevor, Trevor Lawrence is just still
17:31not looking. He's looking very inconsistent. He doesn't, he doesn't look like he's super
17:36comfortable in that offense. They had a boatload of turnovers the first few games early on. Right.
17:40They had a boatload of turnovers the first few games. And that was a lot of what drove them to
17:44some of those victories. The last three games, I think they've got one takeaway. Yeah. Which we
17:49predicted at the time. All right. These things balance out. Yep. I guess the one thing we got to get out,
17:54but like, no, the one thing about this past weekend is that it got worse as the game went
17:59on for Davis. I would have liked it better if like by the end of the game, you know,
18:03he and Nick Caley had figured a few things out, but it looked like they were losing the chess match
18:07to Vance Joseph in that game. So we'll see what the Jags have for.
