00:00People from Latin American political organizations commemorate 20 years of
00:15saying no to the free trade area of the Americas. In the United States the
00:24Democrat Soran Mamdani has been elected as the major of the New York City and
00:32organizations defending Palestinian prisoners have denounced the increase in
00:36the number of prisoners and detainees in Israeli regime prisons.
00:44Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in
00:48Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:02In Argentina social trade unions and political organizations commemorate 20
01:08years of saying no to the free trade area of the Americas. The organization
01:12remembered the historic date when the peoples of Latin America and the
01:16Caribbean stopped the FTAA project which sought regional domination and control.
01:21During the commemoration and with a slogan for the sovereignty of the peoples
01:26against the right of neoliberalism, attendees emphasized that the US plan was
01:31not about free trade but about free exploitation. For his part Cuban
01:36President Miguel DĂaz-Canel celebrated the occasion and urged the region to
01:41continue the struggle against the U.S. Empire.
01:47It was 20 years of struggle, 20 years of our great achievement, which was to
01:55defeat the FTAA in 2005 here in Mar del Plata. Now, 20 years later, it is very
02:01important to remember that great victory of the working class of the Latin American
02:05people. Therefore, our struggle and the work we have done for so many years has
02:10beared fruit and resulted in that defeat in 2005.
02:13We are seeing a new advance by the far right, fundamentally, let's say, with a hegemonic
02:19policy by the United States for a new interference, for greater extractivism, for
02:24greater exploitation of our peoples. That is why, 20 years later, we are returning to
02:29unite in diversity the entire trade union movement, all social movements and all civil
02:34society movements to be able to say no to U.S. interference.
02:42And for his part, the governor of the province of Buenos Aires has said, Kisilov highlighted
02:46the role of the people of Latin America in the historic no to the free trade area of the
02:50Americas project promoted by the United States Empire.
02:54But the People's Summit would not have taken place here. The no to the FDAA would not have
03:00happened if it were not for the representation and as a result of the struggles that had
03:04been going on in Latin America for a very long time. It was the people of Latin America
03:09that defeated the FDAA.
03:13In other informations, in Venezuela, the 20th anniversary of the no to the FDAA movement
03:18and the struggle of the peoples to confront the threats of neoliberalism in the continent
03:23is commemorated. From the Romulo Gallego Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies in
03:29Caracas, the documentary Fight Against the FDAA Challenge of the Peoples was screened.
03:35Venezuela remembers that thanks to the efforts of Commander Chávez, the initiative to free
03:39itself from imperial hegemony and the notable armations of the free trade area of the Americas
03:45FDAA was born. The documentary shows how Chávez's strategy and his union with social movements,
03:52leaders and activists in America helped bury the FDAA with the emergence of the Alba and maintained
03:59the resistance of the peoples.
04:01We are gathered here today to commemorate a tremendous victory that our people achieved 20 years ago,
04:07in this moment of our nation's history.
04:26gathering together is extremely important as it brings the victories of that event to light,
04:40providing guidance and understanding that it was not just something that happened, but
04:45it continues and is an ongoing process.
04:52And 20 years ago, the FDAA, a free trade agreement that the United States sought to promote in the region,
05:01was defeated and rejected by most Latin American leaders, including Presidents Hugo Chávez,
05:07Néstor Kirchner and Lula da Silva. In the following material, we review how the events unfolded.
05:16The Fourth Summit of the Americas was held in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 2005. Their governments
05:21reaffirmed their sovereignty of Latin American peoples in the face of attempts by the George
05:25Bush administration to implement the FDAA in order to benefit U.S. transnational corporations.
05:31In opposition, President Hugo Chávez and Néstor Kirchner made proposals for the eradication
05:36of poverty. So why don't we form an alliance against hunger and poverty, rather than for progress?
05:48As heads of states, we are here, and we are the ones who can make decisions.
05:56That uniformity, which was intended by what was called the Washington Consensus, today,
06:01there is empirical evidence regarding the failure of those theories.
06:07Most Latin American leaders stop the United States government's agenda of continuing with
06:12neo-colonial policies in the hemisphere.
06:17Let's find joint solutions to finance our infrastructures. Hopefully, we will find joint solutions
06:22to facilitate new trade, or there will be no new solutions.
06:28Twenty years after the nod to the FDAA, there is awareness among the people about the role
06:33of imperialism against Latin America.
06:36President Hugo Chávez, with that phrase that we cannot ignore, FDAA, FDAA to hell, taken from
06:45the popular power that he represented, also definitely put an end to the attempt by the United States of America
06:55to impose a model that it had been proposing for years, and precisely to apply the same model that the Spanish Empire had applied 200 years earlier.
07:12The current imperialist attack in the Caribbean aims to seize control of Venezuela's natural resources.
07:19The most important thing is to be aware of this attempt, and secondly, to take the world's independence and sovereignty seriously.
07:30This is very important not only within our national borders, but also in the greater homeland as a whole.
07:38The Venezuelan people remember the Latin American victory over the FDAA.
07:43The assembly held in Mar del Plata had a very important connotation for the peoples of the continent and for the entire world,
07:55because it was the most crushing defeat that imperialism has suffered in 200 years.
08:01This summit gave rise to new regional integration mechanisms social ALBA-TCP and SALAC,
08:06which seeks to promote equal exchange for the benefit of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
08:11Gustavo Flores and Leonardo Urrieta, Telesur, Caracas, Venezuela.
08:16And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English,

08:25We'll be right back. Stay with us.
08:36Welcome back to From the South.
08:38Pope Leo XIV addressed increasing aggressions from U.S. to Venezuela,
08:44denouncing the escalation and stating that violence is never the answer.
08:48A country has the right to have its military to defend peace, to build peace.
08:58In this case, however the U.S. deploying military forces to the Caribbean, it seems a bit different.
09:05It increases tension.
09:10Five minutes ago I read some breaking news saying that they are getting closer and closer to the Venezuelan coast.
09:20I think that with violence we don't win.
09:23The thing to do is to seek dialogue, to look for a fair way to find solutions to the problems that may exist in a given country.
09:31The Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro thanked Pope Leo XIV,
09:36Brazilian President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva, and the United Nations for their statements
09:41against the United States threats against Venezuela.
09:43There have been three very strong statements today.
09:53The statement by Pope Leo, Vicar of Christ and Head of the Catholic Church, who has called for dialogue between the United States and Venezuela,
10:03to seek solutions, and defend and preserve peace.
10:08Thank you, Pope Leo.
10:10Pope Leo.
10:12Thank you very much.
10:14I sent him a letter about a month ago, which he received.
10:19Many thanks to Pope Leo.
10:22And to Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, who is a personal friend of mine.
10:29I received him here when I was Foreign Minister.
10:32And we have a good friendship.
10:35I thank the Catholic Church and the Office of the United Nations for Human Rights,
10:41which has just made a tremendous statement against the threats of the use of military force against Venezuela.
10:48I also thank President Lula da Silva because he has made a strong statement about peace in South America,
10:55and Latin America, and the power that CELAC should have.
11:00These are three acknowledgments I'm going to make.
11:04When we stay in Venezuela, the people celebrate the Christmas Christmas season with various activities organized by the national government.
11:16Dozens of people gathered at the Plaza BolĂvar in Valera, in Trujillo State, to celebrate the Christmas lights turn on ceremony,
11:24which marks the official beginning of the festivities in the Bolivarian nation.
11:28At the event, local authorities invited the population to continue enjoying these festivities in peace, unity and family love.
11:36Christmas 2025 begins in November across the country with various activities characteristic of the holiday season in Venezuela.
11:44Now we go to the United States.
11:52With record turnout at the polls, one of the highest in US state and local elections, Democrats swept the board.
11:59Citizens voted against the violent, discriminatory, anti-immigrant and interferential agenda of the Trump administration.
12:06Sirhan Mamdani, the young legislator who was unknown until a few months ago, became the face of victory for migrants and Muslims criminalized by the White House's policies
12:18after winning with more than 50% of the vote in New York.
12:22Likewise, the victory of Democrats Mike Sherrill and Abigail Spangberger snatched the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia from the Republicans.
12:31In addition, other victories in elections for the prosecutors, courts and referendums far exceed the Democrats' 2024 results in all special elections.
12:45And following last night's victory, the Democratic winner of the New York mayoral election spoke to the press about the importance of holding all those who break the law accountable and the desire for a peaceful transition.
12:59One of the reasons to ICE agents and to everyone across this city is that everyone will be held to the same standard of the law.
13:08To violate the law, you must be held accountable.
13:11And there is sadly a sense that is growing across this country that certain people are allowed to violate that law, whether they be the president or whether they be the agents themselves.
13:21And what New Yorkers are looking for is an era of consistency, an era of clarity, an era of conviction.
13:26And that is what we will deliver to them.
13:28And I am looking forward to having conversations with Mayor Adams and his administration about the work of the transition to ensure that the handover is a seamless one,
13:39and it is one that benefits the shared work we all have to deliver for the people who call the city.
13:46And in this context, Republicans suffered another defeat in the state of California, where Governor Gavin Newsom's proposal to redistribute districts was approved with almost 65% of the vote.
13:59According to projections, more than 4.5 million people supported the initiative, which will allow the state's electoral districts to be redesigned.
14:08The change could benefit the Democrat Party with up to five additional seats amid a close political race with the Republicans.
14:16Governor Gavin Newsom, one of the regional leaders most attacked by the White House, presented this proposal as a tool to protect democracy.
14:26With approval in California and reforms being promoted in Texas, various states could initiate a new district redistribution processes before the 23rd census.
14:41On Wednesday, the U.S. government shutdown reached its 36th day, becoming the longest in the country's history.
14:50The situation has affected the lives of millions of citizens due to cuts in federal programs and the non-payment to government workers.
14:57The White House continues to emphasize the responsibility of Democrat legislators for refusing to accept the spending reforms and restrictions that the Republican bench is trying to impose.
15:08In contrast, many analysts claim that the ruling party is making private gains thanks to the shutdown.
15:14Recently, President Trump called on Republicans to end filibuster rule, a parliamentary tactic used by some legislators to block or delay the passage of a bill.

15:49Welcome back to From the South.
15:50Welcome back to From the South.
15:51Organizations defunding Palestinian prisoners have denounced the influence of the influence of the United States.
15:58Welcome back to From the South.
16:16Organizations defunding Palestinian prisoners have denounced the increase in the number of prisoners and detainees in Israeli regime prisons.
16:24According to the data, as of November 2025, Israel had gained more than 9,250 Palestinians, most of them administrative detainees, where nearly 1,242 of them are convicted prisoners, while 49 women continue to be held in Zionist prisons as well.
16:44The report also details that around 350 miners are detained in the Afar and Megidda prisons.
16:57Also in Palestine, the Israeli army has carried out more than 2,300 attacks against property and people in the occupied West Bank over the last two months.
17:07The Commission for resistance to the war and settlements denounced the violation of occupation and pointed out that most of the raids were concentrated in the cities of Ramallah, Nablus and Hebron.
17:19It also warned of an increase in Israeli crimes, including the demolition of buildings, the imposition of obstacles to the movement of peoples, murders, physical assaults and robberies, with the aim of imposing a settlement system.
17:33Following the crimes, the authorities demanded a firm international stance to protect the Palestinian people.
17:40In other news, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, nearly 25 million people will suffer from food insecurity between September and December 2025.
17:55The Agriculture Ministry reported that the situation will worsen in 2026 due to armed conflicts, climate change and displacement.
18:05The Ministry emphasized that violence in the region makes it difficult to deliver humanitarian aid due to a lack of funds.
18:12It urged an end to hostilities to facilitate humanitarian access to the most vulnerable areas, create a social protection program and strengthen food price controls.
18:37In the Philippines, the death toll rises to 98 after Typhoon Kalmaegi passes through.
18:42Civil Protection reported that at least 49 of the dead drowned in floods, while others died due to landslides and falling in the breeze.
18:51In addition, 26 missing persons have been reported, some of whom may be dead, so the number could increase.
18:58The Emergency Operations Centre reported that at least 120,000 residents were displaced from their homes due to flooding caused by heavy rains in the Congo.
19:07In Haiti, the number of victims from Hurricane Melissa continues to rise as authorities confirmed, 43 dead and 13 missing, after the storm hit the southwest of the country.
19:23Rescue teams continued to work in the most affected area by floods and landslides that devastated more than 30 communities.
19:31Nearly 12,000 homes were flooded and 200 were destroyed, while more than 1,700 people remained in temporary shelters.
19:40The government warned of drinking water shortages and implemented emergency measures to prevent outbreaks of cholera and diseases,
19:50and also announced agricultural support with seeds and tools for farmers affected by the losses.
19:57Now we move to Mexico.
20:06The President Claudia Sheinbaum filed a complaint against the man who harassed her this Tuesday outside the National Palace.
20:13The Mexican President reported that legal action was filed in Mexico City while lamenting and detailing the incident.
20:20After the harassment, the Mexican leader realized she was not the only victim and that the accused had repeated this action against all the women on the same street.
20:31He was arrested and is currently in protective custody.
20:35Sheinbaum emphasized that this incident is not solely related to her as the highest authority in the country,
20:41but to all Mexican women to guarantee respect for women in every sense.
20:50And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
