In Major Win for Newsom, California Voters Approve New Congressional Maps to Counter GOP Redistricting

California’s congressional maps will be redrawn to create more blue-leaning districts after voters approved a measure to amend the state’s constitution on Tuesday, delivering a victory for Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democrats in a contentious redistricting battle that has broken out around the country.  The Associated Press called the passage of Proposition 50—which will allow a new, gerrymandered congressional district map to be implemented through 2030—as soon as the polls closed, before votes were officially tallied.

00:00Let me underscore, it's been a good evening for everybody, not just the Democratic Party.

00:05But what a night for the Democratic Party, a party that is in its ascendancy,

00:11a party that's on its toes, no longer on its heels, from coast to coast, sea to shining sea.

00:19But it was not just a victory tonight for the Democratic Party, it was a victory for the United

00:24States of America, for the people of this country, and the principles that our founding fathers

00:30lived and died for.

00:31And so we're proud, we're proud here in California to be part of this narrative this evening.

00:38We're proud of the work that the people of the state of California did tonight to send

00:43a powerful message to an historic president.

00:47Donald Trump is an historic president.

00:50He is the most historically unpopular president in modern history.

00:56In every critical category, Donald Trump is under water.

01:01He promised to make us wealthier.

01:03We're sicker and poorer.

01:06And he fundamentally understands that.

01:10Why else, why else would he call Greg Abbott saying he's entitled to five seats?

01:16Why else is he trying to rig the midterm elections before one single vote is even cast?

01:25He understands his position at this moment in the United States of America.

01:33One thing he never counted on, though, was the state of California.

01:38Instead of agonizing over the state of our nation, we organized in an unprecedented way, in a 90-day

01:47sprint.

01:48People from all over the United States of America contributed their voices and their support

01:54for this initiative.

01:56We stood tall and we stood firm in response to Donald Trump's recklessness.

02:03And tonight, after poking the bear, this bear roared with an unprecedented turnout in a special

02:12election with an extraordinary result.

02:15Just today, in Los Angeles, Donald Trump called up the Border Patrol, sent them to Dodger Stadium

02:25and threw a fastball at free speech, right at the head, free expression, to suppress the vote

02:33in America's second largest city.

02:36Just did that today.

02:39People in tactical gears sent out to intimidate a community that is already on edge.

02:46But you see, as we speak, people are still in line.

02:49People waiting up three hours to cast their vote, to send a message to Donald Trump.

02:57No crowns, no thrones, no kings.

03:01That's what this victory represents.

03:04It's a victory for the people of the state of California and the United States of America.
