00:15The Magic Mill
00:19Once upon a time there lived a poor old man
00:25who had more children than there are holes in a sieve.
00:30His oxen were so small that they were barely any bigger than grasshoppers.
00:35The poor man and his wife spent all their days and nights
00:37worrying about how they would feed their very large family.
00:41One day the poor man hitched his tiny two oxen to his tiny cart
00:45and went into the forest.
00:53The poor man was busy collecting dry branches
00:56and stacking them neatly on the back of his cart
00:58when he caught sight of a boy and a girl playing in a clearing close by.
01:02And the children began to talk to him.
01:05The poor man soon learned that the girl was the daughter of the king of the sunrise
01:08and the boy the son of the king of the sunset.
01:12As the three of them chatted away, the boy noticed the two tiny oxen.
01:17The little prince was so besotted with these miniature beasts
01:20that he begged the poor man to sell them to him.
01:22The young prince appealed and pleaded and promised the poor man
01:25that his father the king would reward him richly
01:27and so the poor man eventually agreed.
01:32When the poor man arrived home without the oxen,
01:35there was an almighty argument
01:36and his wife was so angry with her husband
01:39that he turned on his heels
01:40and left the house for the court of the king of the sunset.
01:43The poor man arrived to see the prince playing with the two tiny oxen.
01:55Come, kind sir, come, said the prince, and let me give you some advice.
02:00No matter what my father offers you,
02:01you should refuse it and insist that he gives you the magic mill in payment.
02:06So the poor man went to the king who said,
02:08Your two tiny oxen give my son such great joy and pleasure
02:12that you may have whatever you ask.
02:15Then the poor man noticed that the magic mill was on the table
02:18and it was so very small that it looked like a child's toy.
02:22So the poor man said,
02:24Your majesty, the only thing I wish to have in return for my two tiny oxen
02:28is this tiny mill on your table.
02:30The king said,
02:31Sir, you may have whatever you wish for, but not that.
02:34Now then, thought the poor man,
02:38this tiny mill isn't a toy after all,
02:40as the king does not want to part with it.
02:43The poor man humbly added,
02:45Your majesty, please let me have this tiny mill
02:48so that my children may also have a toy to play with.
02:53The king loved his own child very dearly.
02:56So he agreed to give the poor man the mill.
02:59Then the prince said,
03:00Kind sir, you should leave for your home now
03:03and when you arrive back, place the mill on the table and say,
03:06Magic mill, give me gold and food to eat.
03:13And when the mill has made enough,
03:15you simply say,
03:17Magic mill, stop your magic now.
03:20The poor man was delighted with his prize.
03:25He then thanked the prince for his kindness,
03:27put the tiny mill under his arm
03:29and hurried home so quickly
03:31that his feet never touched the ground.
03:35He was on his way home
03:36when he saw something large and black looming towards him,
03:40but he could not for the life of him guess what it was.
03:42And what do you think it was?
03:44It was a horrible, huge, black hat.
03:49Underneath the hat was a man
03:50and the poor man joked with him and said,
03:52Good day, good friend.
03:53Isn't that hat too tight for you?
03:56The hatted man replied,
03:57Instead of mocking me, sir,
03:59why don't you give me a bit of bread
04:00because I haven't eaten for three days straight?
04:03The poor man said,
04:04But I don't have any food with me either.
04:07But then he remembered the magic mill and said,
04:10Magic mill, give me good food to eat.
04:13The poor man had barely finished speaking
04:15when so much food appeared
04:16that there was enough to feed a village for a week.
04:19Magic mill, stop your magic now.
04:24Then the two men ate and talked a while
04:27until the hatted man said,
04:29Good sir, your mill is a magical thing indeed,
04:32but my black hat also has spectacular powers.
04:35Ask for one of anything and it will give you two instead.
04:39I will trade my hat for your mill.
04:42Sir, I'm not a fool.
04:44That's what you think.
04:46Just watch this, said the man in the hat.
04:48Fire!
04:54Enough!
04:55Yes, said the poor man.
05:05I see your hat is quite splendid.
05:08But a hat such as that would not save me from starvation.
05:12But the hatted man appealed and pleaded with the poor man
05:15until he eventually agreed to the exchange.
05:18When the hatted man walked away,
05:21he also left a stick lying on the ground.
05:23The poor man was left feeling cheated and sad
05:27when the stick suddenly spoke up and said,
05:30Why so sad, master?
05:32I'm sad because I have lost the little sense I was born with
05:36and I'm sad because I have lost my magic mill
05:39that I was foolish enough to swap for a hat.
05:41Then, in an instant, the stick hurried away
05:44and reappeared with the magic mill.
05:47And so the poor man had no reason to feel sad a moment longer.
05:52When the poor man returned home,
05:54his family surrounded him and rejoiced
05:56when they learned that the mill had magic powers.
05:59Days and months passed and one day the poor man
06:02was standing at his gate when he saw the king
06:04approaching on foot with his wife and son.
06:07The poor man asked the king,
06:10Where to, your majesty?
06:12Where are you walking on foot?
06:14The king replied,
06:15We're in very great trouble.
06:17The king of the north has invaded my kingdom
06:20and I have been forced to flee my home with my beloved family.
06:24But don't be sad over such a little matter, your majesty.
06:27I will mend matters in no time at all.
06:30Then the poor man put the huge hat on his head,
06:33took the stick in his hand
06:34and set off to find the king of the north's soldiers.
06:38It was not long before he stumbled across them
06:40because the king of the sunsets' kingdom
06:42was crowded from border to border by the soldiers.
06:46Then the poor man climbed to the top of a hill,
06:49pointed his huge black hat in the direction of the enemy
06:52and commanded,
06:53Hat! Fire!
06:56He then sent his stick after the men
07:00to beat their behinds to make them run faster still.
07:03The carnage was incredible
07:05and not a single soldier of the king of the north
07:07survived to tell the tale of what had happened that day.
07:10Having destroyed the enemy,
07:12the poor man turned and made his way home
07:14where he told the king what he had done
07:16and that he could return to the sunset kingdom.
07:20Then the king purchased the hat and the stick
07:22from the poor man
07:23and made his way back to his royal home.
07:25So now the sunset prince
07:28married the sunrise princess.
07:31They had a wonderful wedding
07:32and the poor man led the dancing
07:34and if his legs can stand it,
07:36he is still dancing to this very day.
