U.S. President Donald Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping as “very smart” during remarks about a meeting with top Chinese officials. Trump described the atmosphere in the room, noting that Xi’s aides were standing in a disciplined and attentive manner, which impressed him.

Trump also used the anecdote to make a point about how he expects his own cabinet to behave, emphasizing order, discipline, and attentiveness in official meetings. He remarked on the apparent nervousness of Xi’s officials, highlighting the contrast with typical Western protocols.

The comments have sparked discussion about Trump’s perspective on international diplomacy, leadership styles, and his admiration for Xi’s control over official proceedings. Analysts note that the remarks reflect Trump’s unorthodox approach to both domestic and foreign leadership expectations.

00:00Now, if we do what I'm saying, they'll most likely never attain power
00:04because we will have passed every single thing that you can imagine that it's good
00:09and all good for the country, and there'll be no reason to.
00:13If we don't do that, people will say they're not doing much, and they're in power.
00:19So the good news is we did the great big beautiful bill,
00:22and it's the greatest thing we could have done.
00:24And the smartest thing with John and our Speaker of the House, who's so good, Mike Johnson,
00:32we did all in one bill.
00:35If we didn't, John, it would be a problem because, you know, we would have gotten a small piece passed.
00:39A lot of people wanted to do that.
00:40A lot of people in the room wanted to do that.
00:42They went along with me and John and everybody, and we got this thing passed.
00:47Honestly, it's four years' worth of goodies.
00:49And no tax on tips, no tax on Social Security, no tax on, think of it, no tax on overtime.
00:57It's an unbelievable tax cut for the workers and for business, where business is going to create jobs.
01:03And we are.
01:04We're creating jobs at levels that nobody's ever seen before.
01:06All these things are good.
01:07We have to be able to get the word out.
01:09If we don't get the word out, we'll make it a very big mistake.
01:12So I have this long, beautiful, and very boring speech.
01:14I won't bother it, because we can just start talking.
01:19And I think it's very important.
01:21We have to get the country open.
01:22And the way we're going to do it this afternoon is to terminate the filibuster.
01:27And it's possible you're not going to do that.
01:29And I'm going to go by your wishes.
01:30You're very smart people.
01:31We're good friends.
01:32But I think it's a tremendous mistake, really.
01:34It would be a tragic mistake, actually.
01:37It's time.
01:38It's time.
01:39If I thought they weren't going to approve, I'd sort of be with you.
01:43It'd be fine.
01:44I'd be neutral, too, with you.
01:46But knowing that they're going to pass it as soon as they get any semblance of control,
01:51they'll pass it first thing.
01:52Then it's like we have to do it first.
01:54And we have two years.
01:56And we'll end up with two, three years.
01:59And we'll have this country so perfect.
02:01We will pass more legislation than any Congress and any group of senators or group of congressmen.
02:08And we will get it through.
02:10They'll send it to us.
02:11We'll send it to them.
02:12It'll be a beautiful machine.
02:14Otherwise, we're just going to sit around and argue with these people all day long.
02:19And they're highly unrealistic.
02:21Highly unrealistic.
02:22Many of them are radical left subversives, frankly.
02:27So I want to thank everybody.
02:29And we're going to talk.
02:30And I want to thank the press for treating us so really well for that foreign trip.
02:34It was an amazing – we had just an amazing meeting.
02:37Don't forget, two months ago, it looked like the whole world was in trouble over rare earth.
02:42And that's no longer even a subject that people talk about.
02:46It was all worked out very quickly.
02:48Without tariffs, I couldn't have done it.
02:50I put a 100 percent tariff on China.
02:52As soon as I heard it, within 20 minutes, I put a 100 percent tariff on China.
02:58One President Xi, who's really a friend of mine, as much as he can be a friend.
03:01He's a tough man.
03:03He's a tough man.
03:04Smart man, actually.
03:05Very smart.
03:07The press doesn't like it when I call him very smart.
03:09You know, they think I'm not supposed to call him smart.
03:11But at least 1.4 billion people, without question.
03:15In fact, during the meeting, we were there.
03:18A couple of you were there, and some of you saw it.
03:21So he's here, and he's got about six people on each side.
03:24And every one of those people was standing like this.
03:28They weren't attached.
03:30And I made a comment to one of them, and it got no response.
03:33I said, are you going to answer me?
03:34I got no response.
03:36And President Xi didn't let him have any.
03:38So if there's any question, I said,
03:41I want my cabinet to behave like that.
03:43I'm demanding that my cabinet.
03:45I want them sitting up like that, Tim, just nice and straight.
03:48I never saw a posture like that.
03:49I've never seen men so scared in their lives.
03:52They have the equivalent of a vice president.
03:57I said, are you going to answer my question?
03:59And he's like, he doesn't move.
04:01I said, what's wrong with this cabinet?
04:02I will answer all questions.
04:04Why don't you behave like that?
04:06J.D. doesn't behave like that.
04:08J.D. buds into conversations.
04:11I want to have that for at least a couple of days, okay, J.D.?
04:14We'll keep you long-term, but a couple of days.
04:18A couple of days of that would be very, very nice.
04:21Okay.
04:21I want to thank you, and we'll talk a little bit.
04:24And I see they set me up with a podium.
04:26I thought I'd just be sitting, but it's probably easier.
04:29I want to thank you all very much.
04:30Thank you to the press, and you can go, and we'll speak to you later.
04:33I'm going to Miami to make a speech today at a big group, and we have a nice big crowd.
04:39And we'll see you there.
04:40A lot of you are traveling down with me.
04:41Thank you very much.
04:42Mr. President, you sound very frustrated by last night's election.
04:45What are the takeaways for people in this room?
04:47Thank you, press.
04:49Thank you, guys.
