NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reveals he and President Trump have agreed on two key “workstreams” to address tensions over Greenland and Arctic security.

One workstream focuses on NATO collectively securing the Arctic to prevent Russian and Chinese influence, while the other involves the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland continuing their talks independently.

Rutte also praises Trump for pushing NATO members to meet defense spending targets and warns that Europe cannot defend itself without the U.S. nuclear umbrella.

Watch the full session to see Rutte’s candid remarks on NATO, Arctic security, and Europe’s reliance on the U.S.

00:00One more extreme will be to see how best collectively we can prevent the Russians and the Chinese
00:17getting more access to the Arctic region, becoming also military more of an adversary there.
00:24How to prevent that also from them gaining access to the economy here and there.
00:28And that's one work stream.
00:31As we all know, we are now coming up to the fourth tragic anniversary and it forces the Russians
00:38to more and more protect the Shadow Fleet, which, of course, poses a cost on them.
00:44In the meantime, as these discussions to secure a long and lasting peace, my relationship with
00:51the president.
00:52Hey, listen, if somebody is doing good stuff and President Trump is doing a lot of good
00:56stuff, I believe, I know I'm irritating a lot of you again.
00:58But I think so, because as I said also in Davos, the 2% reach by all NATO countries now at
01:06the end of 2025 would never, ever, ever have happened without Trump.
01:11Do you really think that Spain and Italy and Belgium and Canada would have decided to move
01:16from 1.5% to 2%, Italy spending 10 billion more now on the fence at the beginning of
01:21the year without President Trump?
01:22No way!
01:23It would not have happened.
01:24And do you really think that in The Hague we would have come to the 5% commitment without
01:28President Trump?
01:29No way!
01:30It's great to see you both again, but also to see all of you again.
01:35So when President Trump is doing good stuff, I will praise him.
01:38And I don't mind him publishing text messages.
01:41And if anyone thinks here, again, that the European Union or Europe as a whole can defend
01:46itself without the U.S., keep on dreaming.
01:49You can't.
01:50We can't.
01:51We need each other.
01:52And why do we need each other?
01:53I tell you.
01:54First of all, because also the U.S. needs NATO.
01:57For example, the full application and what's happened on the 7th of October 2023.
02:03For the U.S. to stay safe, and by the way, Arctic region is evidence here, they need a
02:08secure Arctic, they need a secure Euro-Atlantic, and they also need a secure Europe.
02:12So the U.S. has every interest in NATO as much as Canada and the European NATO allies.
02:19But for Europe, if you really want to go it alone, and those who you were planning for
02:22that, forget that you can never get there with 5%.
02:25It will be 10%.
02:27You have to build up your own nuclear capability.
02:29That costs billions and billions of euros.
02:32You will lose then, in that scenario, you would lose the ultimate guarantor of our freedom,
02:36which is the U.S. nuclear umbrella.
02:38So hey, good luck.
02:40This stabilizes entire regions and causes mass civilian suffering.
02:45Thank you, Chair, and thank you, Secretary General, for being here.
02:48And my question will also be about recent events in...
