Shanghai residents voiced strong skepticism on Monday over the possibility that U.S.-China relations will improve following the recent phone call between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. While the White House described the call as “constructive,” many in China’s largest city said they expect little meaningful change, pointing to years of tense rhetoric, trade disputes and mutual distrust.
Locals interviewed said the conversation seemed more symbolic than substantive, with some suggesting the two leaders remain far apart on key issues ranging from trade and technology to security and diplomatic engagement. Others noted that previous attempts at thawing relations have often been followed by renewed tensions and sanctions.
