Canadian former Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding has pleaded not guilty in a U.S. federal court to sweeping drug trafficking and murder conspiracy charges, marking a dramatic fall from sporting fame to global criminal allegations. Prosecutors accuse Wedding of leading a transnational cocaine smuggling network linked to Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, ordering multiple drug-related killings across North America, and operating while on the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted list. Arrested in Mexico City and flown to California, the 44-year-old faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted, with his defense indicating the high-profile trial is unlikely to begin as early as March due to the scale of evidence involved.

00:00Today, Mr. Wedding entered a not guilty plea to both indictments that he's been charged with.
00:27The indictments are not evidence, they're just an accusation.
00:32And the way that our system works is that it's accusatory, not inquisitory.
00:36So he entered a not guilty plea to both of those indictments.
00:40We were not in a position today to do that.
00:44He's in good spirits. He's a strong, you know, he's a former Olympic athlete,
00:49which obviously takes a lot of mental toughness to participate in those type of games and at a high level.
00:55So he's he's in good spirits.
01:09He didn't surrender. He was apprehended. He was arrested.
01:12And so any spin that the government in Mexico is putting on this that he surrendered is inaccurate.
01:19And I think if there's anybody in a position to know how his arrest and apprehension went down, it's his counsel.
01:25Imagine this has been a whirlwind, OK, for Mr. Mr. Wedding in terms of when he was apprehended and in terms of when he's appearing here.
01:40So to put all the pieces in place to articulate what conditions or combination of conditions could be set to secure bond was not something that we were prepared to argue this afternoon.
01:51We wanted more time. And so that was not discussed today.
01:55But it's likely to be something that would be addressed at a later date to the district court in Los Angeles that the case is assigned to.
02:12There were two days set. One was a trial date. The first was a status date. OK, given the nature of this case, given what I anticipate to be voluminous evidence, I doubt that we are going to be going to trial in March.
02:26Typically, it would take time to process, review and prepare defense in this particular case.
02:32And so we put that over to the status hearing so that we could probably pick a new trial date.
02:40Thank you. OK, thank you. Take care.
03:04OK, Michelle.
