00:00It's election day in California as voters head to the polls to decide on Prop 50.
00:07Prop 50 would allow redistricting in the state to put more Democrats in Congress.
00:13Governor Gavin Newsom began the initiative in response to Republican states like Texas
00:18redistricting. Straight Arrow News spoke with voters in Los Angeles, most of whom were yes on 50.
00:24I'm voting yes on 50. I think it is heavily important, not only for me, but for our democracy.
00:34I think a lot is on the line. I think this is a serious wake up call for everybody.
00:43I think that the Democratic Party needs to start fighting back a little bit more.
00:50I feel that our democracy is in danger in this country. I feel that what has happened in Texas is a travesty.
00:59Some voters came out to push against the measure.
01:02The problem we have is too much of the government control never really works out pretty good.
01:08And I don't like a lot of the laws that the current governor has passed.
01:12That voter is among the many who expect the proposition to pass.
01:16I unfortunately don't believe my vote is going to have any difference one way or the other.
01:21And it's very sad for me to say that, unfortunately.
01:23The Prop 50 measure would return California to its independent redistricting commission
01:28following the 2026 elections. Many yes voters liked that caveat.
01:33I'm for going back to the commission in two years and I admire the way that this is being crafted.
01:41I would rather it be temporary. The people should have the right to the district.
01:47Some would prefer to keep the redrawn districts.
01:50I suppose it depends on what the rest of the states do, but I'm in favor of keeping it the way it is.
01:54I'm leaning in that direction.
01:56For Straight Arrow News, I'm Lauren Keenan.
