Five days after a blistering report into Canberra’s MyWay+ public transport ticketing rollout, the ACT transport minister has offered a written apology. The government has pledged to do better but the bungled system remains a thorn in its side.
00:00Sometimes sorry seems to be the hardest word.
00:06Well I take responsibility for this. I acknowledge the impact that this has had on Transport Canberra customers.
00:13Well I take responsibility for this, absolutely. I take responsibility absolutely.
00:19The Transport Minister owned up but originally sidestepped an apology in the wake of a damning report into Canberra's public transport ticketing system.
00:28It found MyWay Plus was clearly not ready for launch, was too large and complex and failed public transport users.
00:37Yesterday the Chief Minister took a different road.
00:41So we couldn't stay with the old system but the process of change was not handled well.
00:47We acknowledge that, we apologise for that, we will do better.
00:51And again today.
00:52Yes we got some bad advice.
00:54We also apologise which Chris still refused to do.
00:58Well, everyone will use their own form of words.
01:01Today the Transport Minister found new words.
01:05I reiterate the Chief Minister's comments that the MyWay Plus rollout could have been smoother and apologise to anyone impacted by the transition to the new service.
01:14We will do better with any future projects that have this type of extensive community interface.
01:20The strategy is still try and get away from accountability.
01:23They're trying to protect his brand image.
01:25He's trying to keep that brand image nice and clean and pristine as possible because he wants to put himself in the box seat to become the next Chief Minister.
01:33It's been almost a year since the MyWay Plus rollout, but the problems haven't blown over.
01:39While it works to respond to the enquiries findings, the government is still dogged by lingering issues, compounding the reputational damage.
01:49Of all the things we expect to work properly at a very basic level, public transport's on that list.
01:54A bumpy road to salvage the confidence of commuters.
