Harlem mother shares concerns as government shutdown threatens food aid

Monique Lewis, a Harlem resident and mother of three, relies on $742 in monthly SNAP benefits to cover nearly 75 percent of her food budget — a lifeline now under threat as the White House plans to send only partial payments to 42 million Americans as the government shutdown crippling public services nears record length. "I don't think we'll go hungry" she says, "but it’s really disturbing that this has happened and particularly around the holiday season."

00:00Well, I receive, it's the three of us, myself and my two daughters, so that's who's on the
00:15household budget for them. And I receive $742. So that's a big chunk of what I use for, I would
00:26say it's probably like 75% of it. So I think things will be like a little tight, but I
00:41mean, I don't think we'll like go hungry, you know, but when I think about other people
00:46like, you know, elders and people disabled that, you know, or, you know, seniors who are
00:53not working just on fixed incomes, I think it's like really disturbing, you know, that
00:59this has happened to me and particularly around the holiday season. So I mean, I definitely
01:04think that's one of the great things about this country is that, you know, you can get
01:09assistance like when you need it. But so that's why it's really unfortunate and kind of like
01:17troublesome that then you would attack like a program like that, that you know is like
01:22essential to a lot of Americans. But like, again, you just have to, you know, buckle down
01:27and just make the best of like what I, what I have. I mean, so I guess that means spending
01:32more cash on, on food than I currently have. But I mean, again, I think that I'll be able
01:39to like maintain, but, um, but I hope, you know, that, that the situation, which I think
01:45is like really can create like a real crisis for people that I hope is resolved, you know,
01:50soon.
01:51We'll see you soon, so.
