'Layoffs are imminent', says White House on shutdown
The White House warned on Wednesday, October 1, that worker layoffs are imminent as the first day of the government shutdown unfolded. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters cuts could come in "two days." Vice President J.D. Vance has acknowledged the situation could escalate quickly into layoffs if the shutdown continues even as he said no final decision has been made about whether certain workers will be laid off or furloughed.

00:00I'm just wondering how soon you could see cuts to the federal workplace and if there's a specific agency that will experience those cuts or people focused?
00:09Unfortunately, because the Democrats shut down the government, the president has directed his cabinet and the Office of Management and Budget is working with agencies across the board to identify where cuts can be made.
00:20And we believe that layoffs are imminent. They are unfortunately a consequence of this government shutdown.
00:26So you said imminent. The vice president seemed to say in a couple of days. It looks like Russ Vogt maybe said in two days.
00:33When would these layoffs begin?
00:36Two days imminent very soon. You will expect more announcements right now.
00:41Is it just unclear or are you waiting?
00:43No, it's not unclear. All of those things are very synonymous with one another. These rifts are unfortunately going to have to happen very soon.
