00:00A group of artists in Kenya is working to inspire the upcoming generation of talent.
00:06The Wajuku Arts Initiative seeks to guide young individuals towards a creative future,
00:11steering them away from gang violence.
00:15Located beneath the corrugated iron roofs of Nairobi's impoverished Mkuru district,
00:20Wajuku Arts is a community-based collective that utilizes art to transform narratives of struggle and survival.
00:27We have a lot of stories about our community whereby women are left by their husbands
00:34and so they struggle a lot on a living life.
00:40So you find they have to hustle to pass a hard time on maybe survival and also feeding their kids.
00:51And so when you come to a community, you'll find a lot of young mothers who don't have fathers.
00:58Or they don't have husband.
01:00So my art always, when I do art, I always do about what they pass through.
01:08Over the years, Wajuku Arts has transitioned from a survival initiative
01:12to a vibrant community center for creativity and mentorship.
01:16The organization currently trains 30 young individuals in photography, videography, web design and art
01:23while also reaching 150 children through its educational and artistic programs.
01:29In formal places, because of economical struggle, parents do not pay attention to what their kids are going through
01:39and emotional struggle or mental struggle, this comes like a secondary need
01:46and mostly when it's already like a big problem.
01:50But with art, I think, is a tool of processing the inner burning, the inner thoughts, the inner doubts
02:03and also the inner struggle that we face even without sharing with others.
