Mesa Verde is best known for a large number of well-preserved cliff dwellings, houses built in alcoves, or rock overhangs along the canyon walls. The structures contained within these alcoves were mostly blocks of hard sandstone, held together and plastered with adobe mortar. Why was the Mesa Verde abandoned? People hunted out the big game and deforested the mesa. In 1276 a 23-year drought began. The Ancestral Puebloans abandoned the site by 1300. Cowboys found the cliff dwellings in the 1880s and subsequent explorers plundered them—until much of the mesa was turned into a national park in 1906. What is the best time to visit Mesa Verde National Park? While cliff dwelling tours are over for the season, fall is a beautiful time to visit Mesa Verde. Quieter than summer and warmer than winter, fall is a wonderful time to experience the culture and nature protected within Mesa Verde National Park. Is Mesa Verde a real place? Currently Mesa Verde has over 4,700 archaeological sites including 600 cliff dwellings and the mesa top sites of pithouses, pueblos, masonry towers, and farming structures, with many more yet to be revealed. These sites are some of the most notable and best-preserved dwellings in the United States. Is Mesa Verde worth visiting? The ancestral cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde are some of the best-preserved in all of North America. This on its own makes it a worthwhile visit. 00:00Deep in the American Southwest, you'll find Mesa Verde National Park with its fascinating
00:04collection of 600 ancient clifftop dwellings. The most famous of these dwellings is the Cliff
00:11Palace, built into an enormous sandstone alcove that's protected it from the elements for over
00:16seven centuries. It's the largest of its kind in North America and unlike the rest of the
00:22dwellings that contain just a few rooms for residential purposes, the palace had over 150
00:28rooms and 23 sacred kivas. Having been lived in for close to a century, these unusual cliffside
00:36villages were suddenly abandoned in the 13th century. Nobody really knows why. Today, around
00:494,800 archaeological sites dating back to 550 AD can be found in Mesa Verde, some of which
00:56are open to the public.
