00:01Welcome to our channel where we dive deep into the stories behind the headlines.
00:05Just prior to Gleyber Torres entering the free agent market, he underwent surgery.
00:09The infielder, who played a key role in leading the Tigers to their second consecutive AL Division
00:14Series appearance, had a procedure on Friday to address a sports hernia that had been troubling
00:18him for much of the latter part of the season. On Friday morning, Torres' representatives shared
00:23the news of the successful surgery via social media. He is anticipated to be fully recovered
00:30in time for the beginning of spring training in a few months. Torres disclosed the injury
00:36following the Tigers' season-ending defeat in Seattle during Game 5 of the ALDS.
00:42This revelation sheds light on his performance decline in the latter part of the season,
00:47contrasting with a strong first half that secured him a starting position at second base in the
00:52All-Star game. In the first half of the season, over 84 games, he recorded a batting average of
00:58.181 with a .387 on-base percentage and a .425 slugging percentage, hitting 9 home runs,
01:0716 doubles, and driving in 45 runs while striking out 46 times. In the second half, across 61 games,
01:15his performance dipped to a .223 batting average, a .320 on-base percentage, and a .339 slugging
01:23percentage, with 7 home runs, 6 doubles, and 29 RBIs, along with 55 strikeouts. During the postseason,
01:31in 8 games, he posted a .235 average, a .316 on-base percentage, and a .382 slugging percentage,
01:41hitting 1 home run, 2 doubles, and 1 RBI, while striking out 10 times. Torres decided to postpone
01:49his surgery until the conclusion of the season in order to support the Tigers during their playoff
01:53campaign. After their 15-inning defeat in Seattle, Torres expressed,
01:57It was not really good. From the start of the second half, I was in a lot of pain.
02:02He acknowledged the efforts of the trainers and medical staff, stating,
02:06They did a really good job keeping me playing. It's not about numbers, it's about playing every day,
02:11and we do whatever we can at the moment to keep playing. Every. Day.
02:16The Tigers, were kept informed about Torres' condition. During the season-ending press conference,
02:22President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris and Manager A, Jay Hinch confirmed that there had
02:27been no discussions about sidelining Torres for surgery or limiting his playing time. Harris remarked,
02:33Glaber was upfront and honest about reporting that to us. We felt like he still was capable of being a
02:38solid addition to our team. You saw him hit a home run to the opposite field during the division
02:43series at home, which is really hard to do. He's a significant part of what we do. This year,
02:49we are quite pleased with his performance. Although we wish he hadn't been injured during the second
02:53half of the season, we still believe he played a significant role on our team. Hinch mentioned,
02:58We were in constant communication with Glaber. I even gave him an extra day or two off.
03:02Imagine how everyone would have reacted if I had randomly given Glaber Torres a day off in September
03:08when we were struggling with a 7-17 record. He would have come straight to my office questioning
03:13my decision. Last December, Torres signed a one-year contract worth $15 million with the Tigers,
03:22aiming for a comeback after a challenging 2024 season with the Yankees. He had a solid season,
03:27achieving a 2.9 BWR, with a batting line of .256, .338, .387, an OPS plus of 108, along with 22 doubles,
03:3916 home runs, and 74 RBIs, over 145 games. Torres will be undergoing rehabilitation during his second
03:46opportunity in free agency. The Tigers have the option to extend a qualifying offer to him,
03:52which would be a one-year deal valued at $22,000 and $25,000, and they can do this until the
03:57fifth day after the conclusion of the World Series. The Tigers would offer Torres a qualifying offer,
04:03which he would have 10 days to either accept or reject. Should he choose to decline the offer and
04:08sign with another team, the Tigers would be eligible to receive a compensatory draft pick,
04:13likely positioned late in the first round or early in the second round. At the conclusion of the season,
04:18Torres indicated a desire to return to Detroit, but he is also seeking a longer-term contract.
04:24The Tigers have several options available for the second-base position, including Colt Keith,
04:30top prospect Kevin McGonigal, and other prospects such as How You Lee and Max Anderson.
04:35What are your thoughts on Torres' future with the Tigers?
