00:00Welcome to the video from the Car Magazine Tuning Blog.
00:04This issue is all about the upcoming BMW EX3, the first series model based on the so-called new class.
00:12This vehicle not only marks a significant technological leap for the BMW brand, but also sets new standards in the field of electromobility.
00:21The midsize SUV will celebrate its world premiere in September at the Aira Mobility.
00:25But BMW is already providing in-depth insights into its development, technology and equipment.
00:32And it quickly becomes clear that the new iX3 is not just another electric vehicle, it is the starting point for a completely new generation of vehicles from Munich.
00:43The X3 is currently undergoing its final test program in Miramass in the south of France, where BMW has been testing its vehicles under a wide range of conditions for decades.
00:52The prototypes of the new model are still wearing camouflage foil, but technically they are almost ready for series production.
01:00According to BMW, development is on the home stretch.
01:04This means that the basic architecture and vehicle concept are no longer being refined.
01:10All that remains is a matter of final optimizations and fine-tuning.
01:13The fast-charging capability of the new iX3 is particularly highlighted.
01:17It is based on a modern 800-volt architecture, which not only enables higher charging capacities, but also more efficient energy transfer and lower heat generation during charging.
01:30The confirmation that the iX3 will be able to charge with up to 400 kilowatts of power is new.
01:35This is a top value that only a few series-produced vehicles achieve.
01:42This was tested on a Hi-C400 hypercharger from the well-known charging station manufacturer Alpatronic from South Tyrol.
01:50According to BMW, customers should be able to recharge a range of more than 350 kilometers within 10 minutes with this charging capacity, to put the scale of this value into perspective.
02:00The range of the BMW iX350 xDrive is up to 800 kilometers according to WLTP.
02:09This means that in the range of 10 to 80 percent of the battery, which is typical for fast charging, a range of 560 kilometers is already available.
02:17Should the iX3 actually be able to recharge enough power for 350 kilometers in 10 minutes and add the remaining 210 kilometers in another 10 minutes, a charging time of less than 20 minutes would be realistic.
02:34However, this assumes that the charging power does not drop drastically after the 400 kilowatts peak.
02:40This is a point that BMW has not yet clarified.
02:44Exact charging times for the 10 to 80 percent range will probably only be available at the official premiere.
02:51It is also interesting that the charging power and the curve can be monitored live via the My BMW app in the future, giving the user a better overview and more control.
02:59Another advantage of the iX3 over some competitors is its compatibility with 400-volt direct current charging stations.
03:11While the new Mercedes CLA, for example, initially only supports fast charging via 800-volt systems, but not via the still widely used 400-volt network, BMW expressly emphasizes the flexibility of its system.
03:24In concrete terms, this means that iX3 drivers do not have to worry about whether a charging station fits the vehicle architecture.
03:33They can use almost any one that supports direct current.
03:37Bi-directional charging has also been part of the concept from the outset.
03:42The eX3 will not only be able to absorb energy, but also release it again.
03:46A special adapter enables vehicle-to-load, V2L, which allows electrical devices to be operated directly via the vehicle battery.
03:57In Europe, this will be possible with a discharge power of up to 3.7 kilowatts.
04:02Enough to supply camping equipment, kitchen appliances or tools with electricity.
04:07But BMW is going even further.
04:11Vehicle-to-home V2 and Vehicle-to-grid V2G are also offered.
04:14With these functions, the vehicle can not only supply the home with energy, but also act as a storage device in the power grid.
04:23However, this requires a special DC wallbox from BMW, which, depending on the market, should enable charging and discharging capacities of up to 9.2 kilowatts.
04:34Details on availability in the various countries and on the prices for the wallbox are still pending.
04:38An interesting, if rather playful, feature is the automatic charging flap.
04:46With the help of artificial intelligence, the vehicle recognizes the driver's movement patterns.
04:51When the vehicle approaches a known or learned charging point, the flap opens automatically.
04:56This is a practical function that increases comfort, albeit with limited use in everyday life.
05:04A real highlight, on the other hand, is the new electronic architecture.
05:09At its heart is a central computer called Heart of Joy, which is responsible for all drive and driving dynamics functions, i.e. drive, braking, recuperation and parts of the steering.
05:19In combination with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack, the system will respond 10 times faster than previous solutions.
05:29BMW promises a significant improvement in the driving experience as a result.
05:34Fewer electronic interventions, more stable cornering and a generally more precise, intuitive driving experience.
05:39In particular, recuperation, i.e. the recovery of energy during braking, is said to be so finely tuned that in everyday cases, mechanical braking is no longer necessary in 98% of cases.
05:53This reduces wear and increases efficiency.
05:56The driver assistance systems are also undergoing a comprehensive overhaul.
06:00In addition to the previous rule-based systems, BMW is now also relying on artificial intelligence.
06:06The new assistance package, referred to internally as the superbrain of automated driving, is said to work up to 20 times faster than previous systems.
06:16It is designed to provide the driver with better support, particularly in complex traffic situations, and to ensure greater safety.
06:24The underlying software and electronic architecture is based on four central computers, the so-called superbrains.
06:32This makes the new class state-of-the-art.
06:36In addition, a powerful cloud infrastructure enables regular updates via radio, so-called over-the-air updates.
06:44This enables BMW to provide new functions and improvements even after the vehicle has been purchased, without the car having to be taken to the workshop.
06:52In conclusion, Mike Reichelt, head of the new class at BMW, summarizes the objective as follows.
06:58With the next BMW X3 as the first model of the new vehicle generation, we have fundamentally further developed every technology with the clear goal of raising the driving pleasure that is typical of BMW to a completely new level.
07:21Now, with the all-new BMW X3, we are bringing our revolutionary technology platform into series production for the first time and can hardly wait to see it on the road.
07:32Regardless of the drive system, all future BMW models will benefit from the innovations and technology advances of the new class.
07:41If you would like to read the article in more detail, you can find the link in the video description as always.
