00:00Welcome to a moment that defines legacies. For the second consecutive year, the Detroit
00:08Tigers are set to entrust Tarek Skubal with the starting role in a decisive Game 5 of the
00:12American League Division Series. The journey to this point is one Tigers fans haven't witnessed
00:17in years. When we were down 3-0 it felt like the season might be over, Skubal reflected after the
00:23Tigers' 9-3 victory over the Mariners in Game 4, which secured their return to T-Mobile Park.
00:29The fact that our team fought back and continued to push through was incredibly important for us.
00:35What looked like a clinching game for the Mariners at Comerica Park on Wednesday took a dramatic turn,
00:40an RBI, a pitching change, a pinch-hit RBI, a near-homer, and a game-tying single.
00:46Dylan Dingler, who delivered a crucial RBI double in the fifth inning to spark a three-run rally,
00:52said, for some reason, hitting is one of the most contagious things in the world.
00:55It was really exciting to see everything come together, you know? The momentum shifted when
01:01Riley Green hit his first career postseason home run, giving the Tigers their first lead since
01:06Game 1. The series turned as a four-run sixth inning unfolded, marking Detroit's highest-scoring
01:11postseason game since Game 6 of the 1968 World Series. We believe, Green stated, no matter the
01:18situation, we never feel out of the game, and we always have faith in ourselves.
01:22This outcome was unexpected, especially after the first half of the game.
01:27Manager A.J. Hinch made several pitching changes, removing Casey Mize after three innings,
01:33then substituting Tyler Holton for Kyle Finnegan after just three batters and three base runners
01:38in the fourth. During this stretch, the loudest reactions came from the Mariners' family section,
01:43while Tigers fans, who had endured eight straight home losses since September 7th,
01:48voiced their frustration with boos. Hinch used every bullpen option to keep Detroit in the game,
01:53not just to get through the innings, but to prepare for Scooble's start on Friday.
01:58Our best opportunity to maintain the game was crucial, Hinch emphasized. To secure a victory,
02:04our strategy was to keep introducing different pitchers. This approach has worked for us.
02:09Hinch's decisions gave his hitters time to find their rhythm. After Cal Raleigh's single put the
02:13Mariners up 3-0 in the fifth, even the sing-along of Mr. Brightside couldn't energize Tigers fans.
02:19For most of the season, we've been a strong offensive team, Hinch noted.
02:25But our finish and some scoring droughts in September can mislead people. The truth is,
02:30we don't achieve those numbers by chance. Spencer Torkelson's single to start the fifth
02:35was the first positive moment. The second came when Dingler doubled to left center,
02:39taking advantage of a misplay. The third came when Mariners manager Dan Wilson pulled starter
02:44Bryce Miller. Jamai Jones pinch hit for Parker Meadows, and, on the first pitch, drove an RBI
02:50double down the left field line. Javier Baez nearly hit a go-ahead homer, but settled for a
02:56game-tying single. Spire stayed in to retire Kerry Carpenter, and then faced Colt Keith, to keep the
03:01game tied. But when he returned for the sixth to face Green, Green crushed a 1-0 slider for a 454-foot
03:08home run, his second-longest ever. Green said, I didn't really care how far the ball went.
03:14It was a homer, and we put another run on the board, so that's all that mattered.
03:18The impact was so loud it echoed through downtown, Scubal added. I saw the swing, I heard it,
03:23I thought the ball went to left center, and I had enough time to figure out where the ball was,
03:27and that was way back, but big swing, that's the guy he is. By the time Baez homered five batters
03:34later, capping a four-run inning, the mood shifted from somber to celebration. Rookie
03:39Troy Melton came in after Finnegan and pitched three scoreless innings, striking out three on
03:44three days rest after his game-one start. The determination and confidence returned.
03:48In best-of-five postseason series, teams down 2-1 but who force game five have gone on to win
03:53the series 58% of the time. Green summed it up. When we all have faith in each other and are united in
03:59our approach, it becomes quite challenging to defeat us. Do you believe this team has what it takes to
04:03become champions?
