00:00Welcome to the latest video from the Car Magazine Tuning Blog, in which we compare the two popular
00:11budget SUVs, the Opel Frontera and the Dacia Duster. The Duster has established itself as
00:19one of Dacia's most successful models and was able to sell over 18,000 units in Germany in 2023.
00:25Despite the expected relaunch this year, sales figures for the Dacia rose to almost 20,000
00:31units from January to November 2024, according to KBA figures.
00:37In the first full sales year of the third Duster generation in 2025,
00:42the number of new registrations is expected to increase even further.
00:46The recipe for success of the Romanian brand with its Renault jeans is simple,
00:50a lot of car for little money. Up until now, Dacia has been pretty much unrivaled in this segment.
00:58But now the Stellantis group has entered the market and is also offering affordable models
01:03with the Citroen C3 Aircross and its Opel sibling, the historically revived Frontera.
01:09Both models follow the same concept, a lot of car for a low price.
01:15But can the new Opel Frontera compete with the established Duster?
01:18What are the similarities and differences?
01:22Let's take a closer look at the two models.
01:25The exterior in detail.
01:27The design of the Duster has been significantly streamlined in the current generation.
01:31However, it remains clearly recognizable due to its functionality and robustness.
01:36The silhouette is very similar to the previous version.
01:39However, it has been given a more modern look thanks to more angular lines and new,
01:43more conventional LED headlights and LED taillights.
01:46The revised radiator grille and the more distinctive bumpers emphasize the robust character of the Daya,
01:53while the skid plates underline its off-road capability.
01:58With compact dimensions and a high ground clearance of almost 22 centimeters,
02:03the Daya is both suitable for off-road use and practical for urban use.
02:06In contrast, the Opel Frontera relies on a more modern design language with clear, dynamic lines and an expressive front.
02:17The striking visor panel, which extends across the entire width,
02:22seamlessly integrates the LED headlights and the Opel lightning bolt, giving the vehicle a futuristic look.
02:27The side view shows a compact aerodynamic shape with sharp accents,
02:33while the rear looks modern and tidy with slim LED lights.
02:39The Opel is slightly longer and taller than the Duster, which gives it more presence and a more spacious feel.
02:44The ground clearance is designed for urban and light off-road routes.
02:50Interior in detail.
02:53Inside, the Dacia Duster remains functional and cost-effective.
02:57The robust but upgraded design offers some soft-touch surfaces,
03:01but does not completely replace the hard plastic.
03:03An 8-inch touchscreen provides basic connectivity functions.
03:10The space is generous, especially in terms of headroom.
03:15The boot holds almost 472L, expandable to 1550L with the rear seats folded down.
03:22Overall, it is solid, but functional and lacks luxurious details.
03:27The Opel Frontera, on the other hand,
03:30emphasizes a modern and high-quality ambience with its pure panel cockpit.
03:33Although the materials are not really more elegant,
03:37the focus on comfort is still evident in the comfortable seats and the practical interior design.
03:43The trunk offers almost as much space as the Duster, with around 460 to 1600 liters.
03:50However, it is perceived as more spacious and luxurious overall.
03:54The drivetrains in detail.
03:56Under the hood, the two models differ significantly.
04:00Both do without diesel engines.
04:03The basic version of the Duster is powered by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo engine,
04:09which can run on both gasoline and liquid gas.
04:12A mild hybrid drive with 131 horsepower ranks above the 101-horsepower entry-level engine without electrification.
04:19A 1.2-liter three-cylinder with all-wheel drive is optionally available,
04:25while all other engines offer front-wheel drive.
04:28The top model is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder,
04:32which forms a full hybrid together with an electric motor and a starter generator.
04:35This achieves a system output of 140 horsepower and is equipped with a multi-mode automatic transmission.
04:43It is the only Duster with an automatic transmission,
04:46while the other variants always use a manual six-speed transmission.
04:49The Opel Frontera relies on engines based on the cost-effective smart car platform.
04:58The entry-level model is a 100-horsepower 48-volt MHFO drive that combines a 1.2L three-cylinder with an electrified six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
05:07There is also an identically constructed variant with 136 horsepower and a fully electric version with a range of 305 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle.
05:19The latter uses a 44-ampere-hour LFP battery in the underbody and offers 113 horsepower at the front axle.
05:28Unlike the Citroen C3 Aircross, Opel does not use a pure combustion engine without electrification.
05:33A second electric variant is announced for 2025, which is expected to offer more power,
05:40a larger battery and a range of around 400 kilometers according to the WLTP.
05:44The price is in detail.
05:46The price comparison plays a decisive role.
05:50The Dacia Duster starts at 18,950 euros in the essential equipment line.
05:55This basic version includes a white solid paint finish,
05:58steel rims, manual air conditioning and the 101-horsepower LPG drive.
06:03The fully equipped top model of the Xtreme line with the hybrid 140 engine costs up to 77,350 euros.
06:12The Opel Frontera starts at 23,900 euros in the addition line.
06:18This version offers the 100-horsepower MHFO drive,
06:22a striking Canyon Orange metallic paint finish and steel rims.
06:25The top model is the all-electric GS version for 32,490 euros.
06:33The price can be increased further with an optional tech package for 1,000 euros and a three-phase onboard charger for 400 euros.
06:41Both models offer a lot of car for little money.
06:43The Duster scores with its proven robustness and off-road capability,
06:48while the Frontera impresses with its modern design and advanced electrification.
06:52The decision depends on whether the buyer places more value on off-road capabilities
06:59and a lower entry-level price or on modern design and innovative drives.
