00:00Welcome to the latest video from the Car Magazine Tuning Blog,
00:09where today we take a closer look at the Skoda Kodiak and the VW Tyron.
00:15Although both large midsize SUVs share a platform,
00:18there are some striking differences that set them apart.
00:23The new addition to the Volkswagen Group, the VW Tyron,
00:27has given the well-known Tiguan a big brother,
00:29while the Skoda Kodiak has gained a new relative.
00:35These SUVs are extremely popular not only because of their impressive towing capacity and generous space,
00:41but also because of their versatile features and performance.
00:46Let's start with the design and dimensions.
00:49The VW Tyron is heavily based on the Tiguan, which is also reflected in the new US Tiguan.
00:54This similarity is intended to clearly position the Tyron as the successor to the Tiguan all-space.
01:02In contrast, the Skoda Kodiak has not yet had a direct offshoot in the Tiguan format,
01:07with the Carrick being a slightly smaller variant.
01:10This strategy follows the philosophy of offering more car for the money,
01:14similar to the Octavia on the Golf platform.
01:17Both models, the Tyron and Kodiak, are based on the MQB Evo platform,
01:22which is also reflected in their dimensions.
01:25Both have a wheelbase of 2.79 meters.
01:29However, the Skoda Kodiak is a good 3 centimeters shorter,
01:33but slightly wider than the VW Tyron.
01:35Both SUVs are also available as a 7-seater,
01:40with the boot volume of the Tyron ranging from 345 to 1925 L,
01:45while the Kodiak offers a volume of 340 to 2033 L.
01:50In the 5-seater configuration,
01:53the boot volume of the Tyron is 885 to 2,190 L,
01:57while the Kodiak offers 910 to 2,105 L.
02:01These enormous trunks offer plenty of space for luggage,
02:05shopping or other items of transport.
02:08Anyone who needs even more storage space
02:10should consider whether a Multiverr is the better choice.
02:14A quick tip, don't be fooled by the pictures,
02:17as the Skoda photographer used a wide-angle lens.
02:21Inside, the Kodiak impresses with a freestanding infotainment screen
02:24that is up to 13 inches in size.
02:28Below it are new digital rotary controls
02:30that allow quick access to numerous vehicle functions.
02:35For the first time,
02:36Skoda is offering a head-up display for the large SUV
02:39in addition to the 10-inch digital cockpit.
02:42The new center console looks clear and tidy,
02:45and the gear selector lever is now located on the steering column.
02:50In the VW Tyron, on the other hand,
02:52you will find a central 12.9-inch display in the basic models
02:56and a 15-inch display in the higher-end trim levels.
03:00The instrument panel always measures 10.5 inches.
03:03The overall layout is largely similar to that of the Tiguan and Kodiak,
03:08although some details have been designed differently.
03:11For example, a flap on the dashboard
03:13that protects the digital panel from reflections.
03:15The Tyron also has a digital rotary knob
03:20that controls the volume, driving modes, and ambient lighting.
03:24As far as the drivetrains are concerned,
03:27neither the Kodiak nor the Tyron are available as purely electric.
03:30However, the Kodiak is offered with hybrid technology for the first time.
03:34The plug-in hybrid powertrain of the Kodiak Evo
03:37delivers a system output of 150 kilowatts,
03:40which corresponds to 204 horsepower,
03:43and achieves a purely electric range
03:44of more than 100 kilometers in the WLTP cycle.
03:48The entry-level version with the 1.5 TSI engine
03:52uses mild hybrid technology to deliver 110 kilowatts and 150 horsepower.
03:58The petrol engine with the 2.0 TSI engine
04:00delivers 150 kilowatts and 204 horsepower.
04:04While the two 2.0 TDI diesel models
04:06achieve outputs of 110 kilowatts and 150 horsepower
04:10as well as 142 kilowatts and 193 horsepower.
04:15The top petrol engine and the top diesel
04:17are equipped with all-wheel drive as standard
04:19and all engines are coupled with a direct shift gearbox.
04:24Volkswagen will offer the new Tyron in Europe
04:26with two plug-in hybrid drives,
04:28one mild hybrid drive,
04:30two turbo petrol and two turbo diesel engines.
04:32The power spectrum ranges from 110 kilowatts and 150 horsepower
04:37to 200 kilowatts and 272 horsepower.
04:41Unlike the Kodiak,
04:43the Tyron offers a more powerful plug-in hybrid.
04:45The two pure turbo petrol engines and the most powerful turbo diesel
04:50are coupled to the 4-motion all-wheel drive,
04:53while all other versions are equipped with front-wheel drive.
04:58An automatic dual-clutch transmission always takes care of the shifting.
05:01Both models can handle a towing capacity of up to 2.5 tons,
05:07with the Tyron reaching this limit and the Kodiak,
05:10especially in the seven-seater version,
05:12also being able to tow up to 2.5 tons.
05:14The nose weight of both models is 100 kilograms,
05:20which is more than sufficient for most trailers.
05:25If you take a look at the prices,
05:27you will see that the Kodiak and Tyron are similarly priced in Germany.
05:31However, there are differences in the standard equipment.
05:34The base price for the version with 150 horsepower petrol engine
05:38is around 3,500 euros apart for the two models,
05:42with the Tyron being slightly more expensive.
05:46This difference is also reflected in the different equipment options
05:49and technological features that each model offers.
05:55Overall, both the Skoda Kodiak and the VW Tyron impress
05:59with impressive features and a wide range of options
06:02that are tailored to different needs and preferences.
06:04Both vehicles combine comfort, generous space
06:10and powerful engines on a solid platform.
06:15Each brand brings its own individual strengths
06:17and special features to the table.
06:20Whether the versatile Kodiak
06:22or the technologically advanced Tyron suits you
06:24better ultimately depends on your personal preferences.
06:29However, both models are strong representatives of their class
06:33and offer excellent value for money.
