The House of Representatives is due to debate an extension to the State of Emergency on Friday 31st October, which is expected to pass via the Government's majority.

And during the post Cabinet media briefing this evening, the Foreign Affairs Minister said the extension has nothing to do with the standoff between this country and Venezuela.

00:00The Commissioner of Police and I believe the Attorney General spoke on this issue prior as to why the SOE should be extended.
00:10I think there has been demonstrative and measurable decreases in crime and criminality.
00:20Additionally, in terms of what the SOE was set up for in the first place,
00:24there is information addressed with certain security agencies that will treat with the need for the extension.
00:32In terms of anything to do with Venezuela and Trinidad and it being tethered to the SOE, that does not arise at all.
