00:00The next question. As-salamu alaykum. I am Samaun from Haurah, West Bengal, India. My question is, can we greet a non-Muslim teacher with good morning or good afternoon when he or she arrives in the classroom?
00:17As far as wishing good morning to a non-Muslim teacher or good afternoon, it is perfectly fine in Islam. As long as the greeting is good, you can wish any greeting which is good and it should not be against the Sharia.
00:37So good morning is a good greeting. It may not be the best, but it's permissible. So if the teacher comes and you wish any greeting as long as it is not against the Sharia and it's a good greeting, you can wish.
00:51And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in the Quran, in the Surah and Nisa, chapter number 4, verse number 86,
00:56Which means that if anyone greets you or wishes you courteously, wish back more courteously or at least the same.
01:22For Allah is careful in keeping of accounts. So greeting is good. As far as greeting, getting the Muslims are concerned, Allah also says in the Quran that whenever you meet a believer, say Salaamu alaykum.
01:40Whenever you meet those people who believe in the signs of Allah, wish them Salaamu alaykum. And there are various hadiths.
01:47So for a Muslim, it is compulsory when he meets another Muslim, he should say Salaamu alaykum.
01:54But if you are meeting a non-Muslim, if you say good morning, there is no problem at all.
01:58Between the two greetings, there is a word of reference.
02:03What does Islam recommend? Is Salaamu alaykum. May peace be on you.
02:08If you compare this greeting with the greeting of the non-Muslim or the westerner that is good morning, you know, the teacher is coming to your class.
02:19The teacher may have had a fight with his wife and he may be cursing the morning.
02:23But when he comes to the class, all the students say good morning, sir.
02:29Imagine he had a fight with his wife. He may be cursing that morning.
02:35He may be wishing that this morning doesn't come again and the students are wishing him good morning.
02:42In case of the Islamic greeting, may peace be on you, irrespective whether it is a good morning or a bad morning, whether it is raining cats or dogs, whether a person had a fight with his wife or not, may peace be on you is excellent.
02:58Even if it is a happy morning, peace be on you is good.
03:00Even if it is a sad morning, peace be on you is good.
03:02So the Islamic greeting is more practical and more appropriate.
03:07And further it says in the Quran, Surah Nisa chapter 4 verse 86, if someone wishes you, wish back more curtisly.
03:14For example, if someone says, As-salamu alaykum, you have to wish back, Wa alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullah.
03:20If someone says, As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah, you have to wish back, Wa alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.
03:26Or if someone wishes, As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh, if you cannot improve it,
03:32at least wish back the same, Wa alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullah wa rahmatullah wa rahmatullah wa rahmatullah wa rahmatullah.
03:37Or maybe someone says, As-salamu alaykum, and you can reply, Wa alaykum as-salam.
03:42The words are the same, but you know the emotion is there.
03:47So even this is better.
03:49So Allah advises in the Quran, if someone wishes you, wish back more curtisly or at least the same.
03:56So but naturally as we discuss, As-salamu alaykum is a universal greeting, is much better.
04:01And this was the greeting news, even by Jesus Christ, peace be upon him.
04:05If you read the Bible, in the Gospel of Luke, chapter number 24, verse number 36,
04:10when Jesus Christ, peace be upon him, goes to the upper room and he meets the apostle,
04:14he says, Shalom alaykum, peace be on you.
04:16Same thing.
04:17In Hebrew, Shalom alaykum, and Arabic, As-salamu alaykum.
04:20And if suppose someone wishes you good morning, your reply should be very good morning.
04:29Because very good morning is better than good morning.
04:32Or least you can do, is you can wish back good morning.
04:35So if the teacher comes and wishes you good morning, it's preferable for you to reply,
04:42a very good morning, or at least the same.
04:45So these are the guidance given in the Quran, that the Islamic greeting is far superior,
04:49but there's no problem wishing any other greeting as long as it is not against the Sharia.
04:54There may be certain greetings which may be against the Sharia.
04:57For example, in Hindu culture, they say Namaste.
05:03Now Namaste means I bow to you.
05:06This is not correct.
05:07So you cannot repeat that Namaste.
05:09Saying good morning, no problem.
05:10Good afternoon, no problem.
05:12But saying Namaste, meaning I bowed on to you,
05:15idam namami, coming from the Sanskrit word, idam namami.
05:19So this you cannot say.
05:20But other greeting as long as it is not against the Sharia,
05:23it's not against Quran and Hadith.
05:25If it's a good greeting, you can wish there's no problem at all.
