Cheers to the connections of this year’s class of Breeders’ Cup performers—the grooms, hot walkers, exercise riders and assistants whose dedication, patience, and expertise has turned potential into performance and whose devotion reminds us that behind every name and number in the program is a horse with a story and a team that has been there through every chapter.

00:00I think that we've got to remember people that we really do this job because we love
00:04horses first.
00:05That's why I picked this job, because you deal less with people and more with animals
00:10and the connection that you have with them, it's real, it's there.
00:14And that's what I love about my job.
00:16You've had dogs and cats, but horses are a different nature, you know, they're amazing
00:20creatures and if you get to click with a horse, there's nothing better.
00:26From the beginning I've been loving horses, it's my passion, you know.
00:29I've never done anything else except my horses, come in the mornings and enjoy it.
00:33Like usually I never take a day off because I feel like something's missing through my day.
00:39I obviously love horses, I think I would work with horses no matter what, but it's definitely
00:45this community of people within the thoroughbred industry that makes it extra special for me.
00:59I love adrenaline, so the feeling you get, you know, the power underneath you and stuff.
01:06Just the connection with the horse is like something kind of hard to describe, I guess.
01:11I remember the first time I got up Nevada bitch, coming back to the barn and telling the foreman,
01:15like, I want to keep this one.
01:17He was just such a sweet boy and he's like, he's a huge horse, but he's like such a gentle
01:24giant.
01:25Now as journalists, you don't really feel him when he's touched on the ground.
01:30He's got this big body, you know, and when you work with him, you feel like he's not even
01:36touched on the ground.
01:38She feels pretty.
01:39I've had a good relationship with her.
01:41She can be like a little quirky as well, you know.
01:44She's like an effective communicator, I would say.
01:47She's actually really quiet, she's really sweet, but in her training, like she knows her job
01:51very well.
01:52She, like, she doesn't need your help really, you know, she wants you to just like leave
01:56her right there and she'll do the rest.
01:59Oh, I just remember I just hit it on the first time, Nakatomi, start riding when it's a baby,
02:09and I just remember telling one, oh, this, I like it, really, I like this court because,
02:13you know, that is, I feel it's strong.
02:17I'm so happy, you know, I'm so glad, so, to Nakatomi, to, to win that race and now go
02:24to the Breeders' Cup, be so happy and if Nakatomi brings the victory to the band.
02:30You're proud because that's your babies, you know, that you train all year long for that
02:35because, well, Breeders' Cup, that's, that's the target.
02:38That's our championship and I feel blessed every day when I get to gallop those horses.
02:43I mean, I can't even put into words, it's huge, it's, it's just so exciting.
02:49Our whole team is so excited.
02:52It's everyone's, every trainer, assistant trainer, Barnes' dream to compete for a title
02:57in a Breeders' Cup championship race.
03:00It makes all the hard work, all the early mornings, all the traveling, it makes it all
03:04worth it.
03:05It's my life, you know, I've done it for 20, 20 odd years now.
03:10It's, it's, it's gave me a career and it's gave me, like I say, see the world.
03:15Yeah, it's, it's an amazing job, amazing just to deal with these animals day in, day out and,
03:19yeah, it's, it's, it's an amazing job.
03:22Horses are like your family, you have to know every, every horse got a different attitude.
03:28I had to make them feel that we're not working, we just can have fun.
03:33What I love about what I do is just working with the horses day in and day out, I mean,
03:39they're so special to me.
03:40All of them are different and building those connections with them is just, it's something
03:44special.
