Hurricane Melissa slammed into southwestern Jamaica as a catastrophic Category 5 storm, packing 185 mph winds and torrential rains that leveled homes and flooded entire towns. The storm left over half a million without power and displaced more than 1.5 million people, causing severe destruction to hospitals, schools, and infrastructure. At least seven deaths have been reported across Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Now weakening but still dangerous, Melissa moves toward Cuba, threatening more devastation across the Caribbean.
