Hurricane Melissa has unleashed catastrophic destruction across Jamaica, leaving at least 19 people dead and thousands displaced as the “Storm of the Century” tears through the Caribbean. Homes have been destroyed, power lines downed, and severe flooding has submerged major coastal areas. Emergency services are struggling to reach remote regions, while the Jamaican government has declared a state of emergency.

00:00The western side of the island was severely affected.
00:04Last night I would have reported that there were 19 confirmed deaths, 19 Jamaicans who lost their lives.
00:12We are expecting that over the next couple of days we will see a reduction in the shelters
00:18and we'll be in a much better position to manage how we respond to those locations over the next couple of days.
00:29As always the government is continuing to work really hard to get supplies to those who have been affected.
00:36As we all know the western side of the island was severely affected
00:41and so we are working to get relief supplies to them, food, get water to them
00:48and also to assist them in the rebuilding process.
00:52So today we're going to give you a lot of updates.
00:54Last night I would have reported that there were 19 confirmed deaths, 19 Jamaicans who lost their lives
01:02and this morning I've confirmed that that number has not changed
01:07but we have reports that are quite credible of the potential of four bodies being in West Milan
01:16that need to be retrieved and one in St. Elizabeth.
01:19We do not count the numbers until the JCF has been able to go to the site and retrieve the body and confirm it.
01:27So we're still at 19 confirmed but we do expect that that number will change today.
01:33Happy to announce that there are several helicopters on the way.
01:42Eight are between eight and ten from the U.S. government
01:45and those are the big helicopters that have the ability to transfer and treat patients
01:55that may need underground treatment plus of course be able to carry a lot of relief supplies.
02:0427,000 customers in the parishes of Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Thomas, St. Catherine.
02:13Kingston and St. Andrew will be restored 90% by Sunday, November 2nd.
02:19St. Thomas, 90% restored by midnight Sunday.
02:22St. Catherine, 75% restored by midnight Sunday, November 2nd.
02:29So we still want to hear about St. Mary and Portland and the others.
02:33Shelters.
02:35We are down to 430 shelters
02:39with about 7,000 persons still in shelters.
02:45But again, as I've been saying before,
02:49there are many communities that because of the conditions there,
02:54persons have generated shelters on their own.
02:59And we are expecting that over the next couple of days,
03:02we will see a reduction in the shelters
03:05and we'll be in a much better position
03:08to manage how we respond
03:11to those locations over the next couple of days.
