00:00You've been in the yachting industry for 37 years now.
00:04What's the biggest advancement that you've seen in recent years that's been the most overdue?
00:10Our TV shows open the doors for women in yachting more so than it ever has been.
00:15It shows people there's the opportunity, hey, you too could be a yacht captain if you so choose.
00:20Or you could work as an engineer or be a yacht broker, whatever it is.
00:24But Bravo did that for every one of those viewers, which is really great.
00:28You and Asha have really become a dream team over the years.
00:32What's been your favorite part of working with her?
00:34I never have to worry about interior.
00:36She makes me laugh constantly.
00:39She's exactly what you see on TV is who she is in person.
00:44She's so kind and very funny.
00:46And we have bridge chats.
00:48We have cabin chats.
00:50You know, she comes and hangs out in between.
00:51And we catch up and I get to hear the gossip.
00:55And it's really fun.
00:56But as a captain, I have that line and she respects that.
00:59And I love how patient you've been with Nathan as a first-time bosun.
01:04What's the most important thing to remember when you're mentoring someone like him?
01:08Facts are Nathan is excellent on deck.
01:10And I don't know if you remember the season where I said he's my bow guy and Joe's face was like, what are you talking about right now?
01:16First and foremost, Nathan knows exactly what he's doing.
01:20As far as organization, he never had that role before.
01:24How are you going to learn it if you're not put in it?
01:27And so basically, for me, it's taking those steps with Nathan and teaching him how to be organized.
01:34And I always say defer to your team because maybe someone's more organized than you are.
01:38It doesn't make you less of a leader.
01:39It makes you a better leader because you're deferring to your team.
01:43Teamwork makes the dream work.
01:44And I think Nathan's going to figure that out this season.
01:47In tonight's episode, you ask Nathan to decide who needs to leave his team.
01:52And to your surprise, he picked both Christian and Tessa.
01:55It's necessary for the whole operation of the boat and the safety of the guests.
02:00But we get rid of Tessa and Christian.
02:03Was that the most people you've ever had to fire in one day?
02:06Yes, I don't think I've ever fired two people in one day.
02:09But, you know, watching the show going, I don't understand.
02:13If Tessa actually had experience, why was she just standing there?
02:17Like, seriously, self-motivation is part of the job.
02:21You can't just wait for every, you know, for your leader to say, do this.
02:26Now, next, do this.
02:27You want people who are self-motivated who can actually execute and do the job.
02:31Watching someone drift out to sea and go, oh, wow, what should we do?
02:36That's kind of scary.
02:38And you said something to him that really stuck out to me.
02:41You said, not everything feels good when you're in leadership.
02:44I feel bogged.
02:45Not everything feels good when you're in leadership.
02:48When did you learn that lesson yourself?
02:50Many years ago.
02:51Never feels good to fire anyone.
02:53Never feels good to have to go over something and have a disagreement with one of your team members.
02:59That doesn't feel good.
03:00You want it to be kumbaya all the time.
03:03In fact, you know, we're in a business where we make people smile.
03:06So I want my crew to always be smiling because we all get along.
03:10But that's not the case.
03:11And in their confessionals, Christian took his firing with Grace, while Tessa had some sassy things to say about you and Nathan.
03:20Honestly, like, I don't need help.
03:23I feel like Nathan's leadership style is pretty.
03:26I feel like I also didn't get the opportunity.
03:29To, like, show my skills.
03:31Good luck to them.
03:32It's their loss.
03:33Did any of their reactions surprise you?
03:36Tessa's did not.
03:39Christian's did.
03:40No, and thank you for the opportunity, Captain.
03:42Yes, of course.
03:42And Nathan, thank you so much.
03:44No, thanks, man.
03:45I'm sorry.
03:45You're a hard worker.
03:46Well, no, thank you, guys.
03:46I thought, wow.
03:49After watching the show, I had no idea the animosity between him and Max.
03:53So I thought maybe he would posture, but no, he was graceful.
03:59It was really interesting to witness.
04:02And then she was the opposite.
04:05Which was disappointing.
04:06Very disappointing.
04:08And you sent out the distress text to multiple deckhands, and Joe Bradley answered the call.
04:14Oh, man.
04:28Well, thank God.
04:30Can you tell me who else you asked, or would you prefer to keep that a mystery?
04:34Joao.
04:34Now, you know, for me, it's like I would love to have the team back, like Luca, like any of them.
04:40However, Joe was great, and he has a great working relationship with two of the crew members that are already on there.
04:47So he's a perfect fit.
04:48I was thrilled to see him come back.
04:50How did he improve on deck since the last time you worked with him?
04:54Like night and day, because Joe continued to work in the industry.
04:57He can tie a bowline, and he's very quick at it.
04:59So he could be the bow guy.
05:01And having him on the deck team is going to cause a new wrinkle for Nathan, given their close bond and goofy friendship.
05:08What can you tease about the dynamic of the deck team going forward?
05:11You never know what distance does to people.
05:15Does it keep them together, or do they travel in different directions?
05:22I don't know.
05:22I think it'll be interesting to watch.
05:24I know you don't see a lot of the below-deck shenanigans during charter season.
05:29Thankfully.
05:29Is there anyone's actions so far this season that have surprised you?
05:35Kizzy!
05:35I just had no idea.
05:37I'm just going to keep saying that.
05:39You know, I think Nathan works hard.
05:42Asha does her job.
05:44I love that V wanted to be on deck, and Kizzy was, you know, a proponent of that.
05:51However, yeah, Kizzy is the one blowing my mind right now.
05:55Just saying.
05:56And this week, the below-deck franchise will air its first official Real Housewives crossover with Salt Lake City and Down Under.
06:03How do you think Captain Jason is going to fare?
06:06I'm a little jealous that I didn't get the crossover.
06:09I'm just saying.
06:10However, how will Captain Jason fare?
06:13I think, well, because he's a captain.
06:14So, that's his priority is the boat, safety of the crew, and the guests.
06:18We had a little shake-up this season on Down Under.
06:21You know, Daisy from below-deck sailing yacht is coming over to work for Captain Jason.
06:25How do you think those two will do together?
06:27Great.
06:28Daisy's great.
06:28Like, I think she'll do really well.
06:30Like, she has experience of boats doing this.
06:33So, if she doesn't have to deal with this anymore, the boat's going to be straight up and floating the whole time.
06:39So, her stuff's not going to fly off the table.
06:41So, I think she's going to be epic.
06:43I've got to ask you about Malia.
06:45Malia, I saw that the vessel she works on, the Savannah, was the yacht that was used in Netflix, The Woman in Cabin 10.
06:54Were you shocked to see her vessel on the screen?
06:57Yeah.
06:57Well, you know, we saw her at the boat show.
07:00She did not mention that.
07:02And I was like, wow, she's true to her word.
07:05You sign that document, you do not tell people what you just filmed.
07:09She did a good job.
07:10So, that was pretty cool.
07:11I was like, I'm close to her.
07:13She didn't even tell me that, which is, I have mad respect for Malia.
07:17Yeah.
07:17And how is she doing?
07:18Is she progressing in her career?
07:20Yeah, she's a captain.
07:21Like, so you become a captain, but then you need the opportunity to drive someone's boat, and that takes a while.
07:27Obviously, everyone knows that you and Hannah are back on good terms.
07:32You know, what's been the best part about reconnecting with her?
07:36We got to find out what each other was feeling and thinking and heard.
07:41And we just sorted it out and realized that, you know, we actually had a lot of great moments while filming that wasn't on camera.
07:49A lot of great moments.
07:50So, we hang on to those, and we've, you know, matured in many ways, and we got to hear each other's story.
07:56And it was the complete opposite of what we thought.
08:00So, just having a conversation really changes everything.
08:03And what can you tease about the rest of the season on Below Deck Med?
08:09Just stay tuned, because Barcelona and Bravado and the crew of Bravado have a lot to offer.
08:15So, we're going to take a look at the rest of the season on the boat.
