It's lovely to see you. Welcome to London.
00:03
I'm sure you've been asked this a lot today,
00:05
but how does it feel to be here in the UK,
00:07
getting ready to meet all the fans?
00:09
It's incredible.
00:10
I love being a part of the Hey You family,
00:12
and I wouldn't have it any other way.
00:14
Also, getting your face wrapped on a taxi, that's cool.
00:19
I haven't seen them yet on the cabs outside.
00:22
I don't know.
00:23
I think I'm arriving in one with my face on it.
00:26
Oh, wow!
00:28
I know.
00:29
That's iconic.
00:30
Also, you guys put our faces on buses.
00:32
Yes, it's true.
00:33
Not me personally, but there is the big red buses.
00:36
I'm sure we'll see them now.
00:38
Yeah, Hey You.
00:39
Not me personally.
00:40
I don't have that authority, Sandy.
00:42
I'm not at that level yet.
00:43
But that's so cool.
00:44
Yeah, it's cool.
00:45
How do you feel about meeting everybody, all the fans?
00:48
Because obviously I know the fan base.
00:50
It's incredible because how I found out my face was on a bus
00:52
was through a fan of the UK.
00:55
They're like, do you know your face is on a bus?
00:57
And I'm like, I take that big red bus every time I come here
01:00
because I am that person.
01:02
Do you not put your face on buses across the pond?
01:06
No, they don't do that.
01:07
No?
01:08
Maybe we need to change that.
01:09
Your face should be on all the buses all over the world.
01:11
Well, they have BravoCon.
01:13
So that's the big face, right?
01:16
I love that for you.
01:17
So you're on cabs, you're on buses.
01:19
We're just going to see so much of you, and we love to see it.
01:21
And now we have FanFest.
01:23
Now we have FanFest.
01:24
I mean, how are you feeling about this?
01:25
Because honestly, so many of my friends are giddy about meeting you guys.
01:30
I think it's incredible that we're able to do that.
01:33
Who thinks of that?
01:34
I know.
01:35
I mean, it's awesome.
01:37
We get to come to London.
01:39
We get a nice little hotel.
01:40
This is posh.
01:42
And taken to a party.
01:44
It's pretty cool.
01:45
It's just like living the dream.
01:46
Aren't you just basically living the dream, Sandy?
01:47
Is that what's happening?
01:48
Living the dream, yes.
01:50
And listen, I remember my first dip into reality TV
01:54
was Big Brother and stuff when I was younger.
01:56
I'm 32 now.
01:57
So I would say over the past 20 years,
02:00
reality TV has just become this massive phenomenon.
02:04
It's just getting bigger and bigger.
02:06
Why do you think we're all obsessed?
02:08
You know, I think it's how they...
02:11
I think it's relatable for a lot of people.
02:14
And I'm sure a lot of people go,
02:17
Oh, my gosh.
02:18
I actually did that or acted like that.
02:20
As far as Below Deck, I think it's a great show.
02:23
It highlights a lot of wonderful things as well.
02:26
Travel, the boat, the careers,
02:29
and they're actually working.
02:33
And they get it together somehow
02:35
and come upstairs with a smile and continue to do their job.
02:39
That's pretty good.
02:40
That's resilience.
02:41
It's such escapism as well, Below Deck,
02:43
because, like you say, the boat, you're on holiday,
02:45
but then you do get invested in all the relationships
02:48
and what's going on.
02:49
How did you first come to get involved with Below Deck?
02:52
How did it all happen?
02:53
It came to me.
02:54
I didn't seek it.
02:56
The showrunner messaged me.
02:59
So I thought, Why not?
03:01
It's giving. I don't chase. I attract.
03:04
I didn't even know.
03:06
I had heard about the show.
03:08
I never watched it.
03:09
I was always at sea.
03:11
I was working.
03:12
We didn't watch TV.
03:13
Really?
03:14
I suppose you can't when you're in the middle of the Atlantic.
03:17
And it was so hard.
03:18
We didn't have tracking satellites like we do now.
03:20
We put them on the dock and had to track it.
03:22
You didn't have TV underway.
03:25
I always think, as well,
03:26
filming on the water is such a challenge in itself.
03:29
Has there ever been a cameraman
03:31
that's just went overboard or something?
03:33
No.
03:34
Oh, my gosh.
03:35
Knock on wood.
03:36
No, because in films and stuff,
03:38
that does happen, obviously, a lot.
03:40
Has there been equipment or anything that's fallen over?
03:43
Not on our boat.
03:44
Is it because you're in charge?
03:46
No, it's just that they...
03:48
Listen, I'm not in charge of everybody, right?
03:50
So they're in charge of themselves to keep themselves safe.
03:53
But, yes, I'm in charge of their safety.
03:55
We haven't had that happen, thankfully.
03:57
And do you just, like, obviously ignore the cameras
04:00
because you're very focused on what you're doing, right?
04:03
They have the fourth wall.
04:05
You know, you'll say, Good morning,
04:07
but they'll get in trouble.
04:10
So you don't want them to get in trouble.
04:12
You want them there to follow the crew.
04:14
So then what was that like for you,
04:16
kind of adjusting to, like, trying to focus on your job,
04:19
but also know that you're a TV star?
04:22
How was that adjusting?
04:23
I don't think about that.
04:25
Because I was a captain before I was on television,
04:27
so my natural way of being is what you see on TV.
04:32
But you are a star now, Sandy.
04:34
Like, people love you.
04:36
I don't know if you're ready for the chaos
04:38
that's going to happen at this fan fest.
04:40
Well, I wish I had the money that stars have.
04:42
Well, don't we all?
04:43
I know.
04:44
That's the story of my life, to be quite honest with you.
04:47
What have been some of your kind of highlights, then,
04:50
of the whole process?
04:52
Working with the people.
04:54
The crew, the film crew, the networks.
04:59
Working with those people.
05:01
It is really, it's about relationships, right?
05:04
So you can have these experiences.
05:06
You could be alone in London,
05:08
or you could be with someone that you don't really want to be with.
05:11
It just changes everything.
05:13
And when you like the people you work with,
05:15
it's cool, it's fun.
05:18
I love it.
05:20
It's a great group of people.
05:22
It's so underestimated.
05:24
Having good people and a good team is just incredible.
05:27
And then on the flip side of that,
05:29
what have been some of the kind of rockiest charters
05:32
that you've ever had?
05:34
Has it always been just difficult clients, maybe,
05:36
that make it challenging?
05:38
Really, the clients, not so much as the weather.
05:41
So weather really affects the charter.
05:45
If the boat's not functioning properly,
05:48
the clients we need.
05:50
Sometimes they're demanding.
05:52
Sometimes an expectation can be seen as demanding,
05:55
but it's just an expectation,
05:57
which is rightfully so if you pay that kind of money.
05:59
Others can be rude.
06:01
That's when I step in.
06:03
But the majority of the challenge is the weather.
06:06
And the crew.
06:08
The crew are a lot like the weather.
06:10
Unpredictable.
06:12
Emotional.
06:14
Sometimes scary.
06:17
I don't know if I remember Laura.
06:19
Listen, I'm obsessed.
06:21
She scared me.
06:23
For Hannah.
06:25
Do you find sometimes you're almost just like a mother as well?
06:28
Because sometimes it is like,
06:30
the crew are just like unruly teenagers at points.
06:33
I look at it as like their coach.
06:35
Like a sports team.
06:38
Because when it's a parent,
06:40
they can get away with it, right?
06:42
And they know there won't be consequences.
06:45
Sometimes there's consequences, but if it's a coach,
06:47
sometimes you get kicked off the team.
06:49
Your pay gets docked.
06:51
It's so funny when the crew do something.
06:53
Even when I'm filming, I'm like,
06:55
you know that's coming out of your tip money.
06:57
They don't know if it's true or not.
06:59
You must have met so many people as well
07:01
that come through the crew process as well.
07:03
Because obviously some people maybe come and do it for a while
07:05
and then go off to do other things.
07:07
Of course. There's a lot of that. That's fine.
07:09
As long as they do their job.
07:11
What does it take to be on your crew then?
07:14
What do you look for?
07:16
What are the key things that you need to be good at?
07:18
Well, if I hire the crew outside of the television show,
07:21
character, I hire for character.
07:24
And then you need some skill set, right?
07:26
So you can teach everything else,
07:28
but you want strong character.
07:30
See, that's the most important thing.
07:32
See, now you've said that,
07:34
I don't think I'd be very good at the technical stuff,
07:36
but I'm the personality hire.
07:38
I feel like character-wise I could maybe get on board.
07:40
Excuse the pun. I didn't even mean that.
07:44
Sandy's like, absolutely not.
07:46
She's not coming on that boat.
07:48
You have a great personality. You can learn.
07:50
I know, but I don't think I could be calm
07:52
when the clients are being rude.
07:54
I'm Scottish. I've got a temper. That's the problem.
07:56
I think I would need to clap back.
07:58
Bite my tongue.
08:00
Bite your tongue.
08:01
Listen, it's been an absolute pleasure.
08:03
Thank you so much.
08:04
I can't wait for you to set sail once again.
08:06
Oh, thank you.
