02:37So, hello.
02:38I'm going to do a tiny little welcome,
02:41as if we need any introduction to our guest today.
02:44But I wanted to say welcome, everyone,
02:47to the 26th annual New Yorker Festival.
02:51I have a bio here, and I'm just going to race through it,
02:53because I think you all very much know who this is.
02:56But Sarah Jessica Parker is an actor, producer, businesswoman
02:59who has received six Golden Globes,
03:01three Screen Actors Guild Awards,
03:02two Emmy Awards.
03:03Parker starred in the series And Just Like That,
03:06a sequel to the series Sex and the City,
03:07in which she starred while also serving as executive producer.
03:10She has performed in the films Footloose,
03:12L.A. Story, Honeymoon in Vegas,
03:13Ed Wood, Miami Rhapsody,
03:15The Family Stone, State in Maine,
03:16and many others.
03:17On stage, Parker recently played opposite her husband,
03:19Matthew Broderick,
03:20in a revival of Neil Simon's comedy Plaza Suite,
03:22for which she earned a nomination for Best Actress
03:24at the 2024 Olivier Awards.
03:26And she is the co-founder of the award-winning company,
03:29Pretty Matches Productions,
03:30and the book imprint, SJP Lit.
03:34So, without further ado, hi.
03:37Hi, Sarah Jessica.
03:38Hi.
03:38Backstage, while that clip was playing,
03:41you were sort of averting your eyes.
03:45It's my favorite position.
03:48Averting.
03:48You don't watch your own work, I hear.
03:50I do not, no.
03:52Is there a reason for that?
03:54Oh, there's multitudes.
03:56Very unpleasant.
03:59Not helpful.
04:03Counterproductive.
04:03Better use of my time.
04:11Yeah, not good for colleagues,
04:15for producing partners,
04:17for those who are playing opposite me.
04:20I'm the person that doesn't run to the,
04:22you know, to the TV to watch playback.
04:24I find it, like, almost unbearable.
04:27Yeah, it can get too much in your head.
04:28Yeah, for other actors,
04:30it's enormously helpful,
04:31and dailies are helpful.
04:33And I have great admiration for those
04:35who can watch the work
04:37and, you know,
04:39take from it something that will,
04:42they feel, improve their work
04:43or change the way they're approaching a scene
04:46or material.
04:47It just, for me, has been,
04:49it's really unpleasant.
04:52Well, so I want to talk about
04:54the reason we're here,
04:54which is The New Yorker.
04:55So you're in the upcoming Netflix documentary
04:57about The New Yorker,
04:59talking about being a lifelong New Yorker fan.
05:01And in it, you say that your parents
05:03didn't have much money,
05:03but they had a subscription.
05:04And I want to know about
05:05how you remember The New Yorker
05:07as a child and your relationship
05:08reading the magazine,
05:09because I know you're a fan.
05:11Yes, my mother,
05:12my mother started reading The New Yorker
05:15when she went to a school
05:16in Cincinnati, Ohio,
05:18called Walnut Hills High School,
05:19which is a really fantastic
05:20public high school in Cincinnati.
05:22It's a college prep high school.
05:26And she went to the librarians
05:28early on in her,
05:30in seventh grade.
05:32And I'm not entirely certain
05:33how she knew to be so industrious,
05:35but she knew that the school library
05:37was getting a copy of The New Yorker
05:39every week.
05:40And so she asked them
05:42to hold it for her.
05:44And so she became
05:45a devoted New Yorker reader.
05:48And growing up,
05:50it was just part of our life.
05:53It was like anything else
05:56that is perfunctory.
05:57You know, like you brush your teeth,
06:00you, you know, say thank you,
06:02you eat what you're served,
06:04and you read The New Yorker.
06:06And that really kind of was
06:08the way our world worked.
06:10And you can extrapolate that
06:12in all sorts of ways.
06:15And my mother always had it,
06:17you know, in her pocket.
06:18And then my brothers were older
06:19and they always had it
06:20in their pocket,
06:21folded in half.
06:22It was always so companionable also,
06:24like it's not a bulky magazine.
06:28And so then when I was old enough
06:29to afford my own subscription,
06:32I became a subscriber.
06:33And I sincerely can't imagine
06:38my life without the ability
06:42to reach for it.
06:44Like I love the journalism.
06:46I love its history.
06:49I love the kind of time and space
06:52the magazine allows journalists
06:54and stories.
06:56And I think especially the thing
06:58that's been most interesting for me
07:01as a reader,
07:02and I'm probably not unique at all
07:03for those, you know,
07:05that we are sharing this face,
07:06is just the way the magazine
07:08takes you so far away,
07:10to areas of conflict
07:13or parts of the world
07:14we know very little about.
07:17So I've just been really grateful
07:18for the talent
07:20and the talent of the writers
07:22and, of course, your editor
07:24and the way he has directed the magazine
07:27and taken care of it
07:29and shepherded it
07:30into our contemporary lives.
07:32I mean, I think of you
07:34as a consummate New Yorker,
07:35but you moved here as a child
07:36to be on Broadway, right?
07:39What was,
07:40can you tell the story
07:40of that a little?
07:41Sure.
07:42My real father was born
07:44and raised in Brooklyn,
07:45so we did visit in the summers.
07:48And then when I was 11 years old,
07:50I, in Cincinnati, Ohio,
07:52I'd seen an ad in our local paper
07:54for an audition.
07:56Harold Pinter was directing
07:57an adaptation of
07:59The Turn of the Screw on Broadway,
08:00and they had put ads
08:02all over the country
08:02for the two children
08:04who were sort of the,
08:06you know,
08:07they shared the lead
08:08with the governess role.
08:09It's the story
08:10of The Turn of the Screw,
08:11you know,
08:11that wonderfully scary
08:12Henry James, right?
08:14Yes.
08:15And we were coming to New York
08:17to see my real father anyway,
08:19and so we wrote to the producers
08:20and we came to New York
08:21and they said,
08:21sure, come to New York
08:22on your own dime
08:23and audition.
08:24And we came to New York City
08:26and we went to a producer's office,
08:29you know,
08:29in Midtown on Broadway,
08:31like really on Broadway,
08:33and, you know,
08:33it said on the door,
08:34Arthur Cantor, producer.
08:35He was a legendary theater producer
08:37in New York.
08:38And I came into the office
08:41and I sat down
08:42and the scripts were yet
08:43to be collated
08:44and I was 11
08:45and they gave us
08:46the scripts to collate.
08:49Child labor.
08:51Which I was honored to do.
08:54And then we auditioned,
08:55my brother and I,
08:56and we got a call back
08:57and we went to that theater,
08:59we auditioned
08:59and we actually ended up,
09:01I ended up getting,
09:02we both got the understudies.
09:04And then the girl they hired
09:06to play the role,
09:07I think they determined
09:08she was too young
09:09and I got a call,
09:10I was back in Cincinnati, Ohio
09:11and I got a call saying,
09:13can you get to London tomorrow?
09:16And Harold Pinter was directing it
09:17and Claire Bloom was starring in it
09:19and I went to London
09:20and had this extraordinary experience,
09:22went out of town
09:23to Boston and Philadelphia,
09:24came into Broadway
09:25to a beautiful little theater
09:27that's no longer here
09:28called the Morosco Theater.
09:30It was 1976.
09:32It was directly across the street
09:33from the Shubert Theater
09:34where Chorus Line
09:35was about to premiere on Broadway
09:37and it was a really special,
09:41you know,
09:41life-altering experience.
09:43Yeah, I mean,
09:43you were a Broadway baby
09:44because then you stepped
09:45into the cast of Annie.
09:47Was it the,
09:47were you the second Annie?
09:49I was the third Annie.
09:50The third Annie.
09:51I was the first replacement
09:52on Broadway.
09:53I was,
09:53I played the,
09:54often forgotten role of July.
09:58Some people think
09:59she's not as interesting
10:00as some of the other characters.
10:02I saw her virtues.
10:04I was cast as July
10:06and I was immediately cast
10:07as the understudy to Annie.
10:09So the first week of my rehearsals
10:10they spent teaching me
10:11the role of Annie
10:12because the understudy
10:14was going to be on
10:15because Andrea
10:16was going to be out of town.
10:17So I learned Annie
10:20and then for the last three days
10:21I learned the role of July
10:23and on my opening night
10:24it was the biggest snowstorm
10:25in New York in 36 years
10:27and everybody was out.
10:30And they said,
10:31you have to learn this part
10:33and this part
10:33and this part
10:34and Andrea actually
10:35was in Philly
10:36where she lived,
10:37where a lot of the kids lived
10:39and they thought
10:40she wasn't going to make it
10:41so it was very possible
10:42for a moment
10:43that I was going to
10:44spend my opening night
10:45playing Annie.
10:46They waited for her.
10:47They held the curtain.
10:47She came.
10:49I played my part
10:50and some pieces of others
10:52and it was I think
10:54the only time
10:55my mother bought a ticket
10:56to see me in a play.
10:58Like she was there
10:59with her best friend
11:00and it was very special
11:02and I remember
11:02all the graffiti
11:04on the back of the curtain
11:05that was raised
11:06at the then Alvin Theatre.
11:08Now the Neil Simon Theatre.
11:10Now it's I think something else.
11:12I feel like L.A. came calling
11:13when you were pretty young.
11:14I mean you were in
11:15Girls Want to Have Fun
11:16and all these movies
11:17when you were in
11:18a teenager footloose
11:19and yet you have stayed
11:20so loyal to New York City
11:21and I want to ask
11:23about why this city?
11:25Why New York?
11:26Because to me
11:27you're a New York monument.
11:29Like you are as central.
11:32I mean you're the reason
11:32I wanted to move to New York
11:34for sure.
11:36And your loyalty
11:39to New York City,
11:40where did that come from?
11:41How did that generate?
11:43I can tell you
11:43my first feeling
11:44about the city
11:46and I don't know
11:47how many people
11:48in this room
11:48are not from New York City
11:50but came here
11:51and I don't know
11:53if we're split.
11:53Are we...
11:54Who was born in New York?
11:57So a minority.
11:59So and that's not unusual.
12:02This is a city
12:03that beckons.
12:04It calls out
12:04and so maybe
12:05what I'm going to try
12:07to say briefly
12:09will be familiar.
12:10I came to New York City
12:11as a very young girl
12:12to visit my real father
12:14and visit my grandparents
12:15who lived on Ocean Avenue
12:16and Avenue S in Brooklyn
12:17on the Brighton Beach line
12:18and I loved the city.
12:23Like I sort of can't explain
12:27the way it kind of invaded me
12:33and there were many things
12:35about the city
12:36that I was completely enchanted
12:38and seduced by.
12:39First of all, yellow cabs.
12:40I loved yellow cabs so much
12:42I couldn't believe
12:43that when I looked out
12:44of the very cheap hotel room
12:47that we were all sharing
12:48and I looked down
12:497th Avenue South
12:50which goes south coincidentally
12:54all those yellow cabs
12:56some people in this room
12:58might not remember
12:59that the streets
13:00were populated
13:01and dominated by yellow cabs
13:02and I thought it was
13:03one of the most beautiful things
13:04I'd ever seen
13:05and I think also
13:06in contrast to the color
13:08of the streets
13:08and this canyon of buildings
13:10and there were these
13:10kind of marigolds
13:11racing down this avenue
13:13and I just thought
13:14it was the most colorful,
13:17exciting, dynamic things.
13:19Those weren't the words I used.
13:20They were just how it felt.
13:22I love hot dogs.
13:25Sabrette stands, right?
13:26This has to be Sabrette.
13:28I died for Sabrette stands.
13:29I couldn't believe
13:35that there was this,
13:37once again, bright,
13:39I don't even like yellow
13:40to be honest.
13:40There was this kind of
13:41bright yellow umbrella
13:44and this man typically
13:46and this hot dog in water
13:49and, you know,
13:51it was costly for us.
13:53It seemed like decadent
13:55and rogue
13:57and sort of neighborhood,
13:59like you were local.
14:01I love Grey's Papaya.
14:02I died for Grey's Papaya.
14:04I died for Orange Julius
14:05and I loved the theater.
14:10Wasn't it your idea
14:11to have like after
14:12in the Insects in the City
14:13after Carrie has her book party
14:14to go to Grey's Papaya?
14:15Yes, yes.
14:17But I also love the theater.
14:18I love the theater
14:19and my parents were very smart
14:20and figured out ways
14:22to afford tickets
14:23and some of us would stand
14:24and then at intermission
14:25we'd switch
14:25and then those that were standing
14:27were sitting
14:28and it just seemed like this
14:32really remarkable
14:35sort of unimaginable place
14:39that really did exist
14:40and we drove home
14:40back to Cincinnati
14:41after that trip
14:42that really like,
14:44like just,
14:45undid me
14:46and I remember
14:47I was in the diving board
14:48at our little local swim club
14:49and I turned to my brother
14:51I was jumping on the diving board
14:52and I said to him
14:53I can't believe
14:55we were just in New York City
14:58and in my head
15:00I knew if there was a way
15:01to get back there
15:02my dream was to live on 45th
15:04between 8th and 9th
15:06and be in the thick of it
15:10you know,
15:10just like in the thick of it.
15:12A beautiful block.
15:13It was so near everything
15:17and I don't know
15:19there were a bunch of Chinese
15:20Cuban restaurants
15:21right up there
15:22on 8th Avenue.
15:23Well I remember
15:23so I wrote a profile
15:25of Sarah Jessica
15:25for the magazine
15:26two years ago
15:27and I remember
15:29walking around with you
15:30around the city
15:31was the most phenomenal experience
15:33because everything
15:34is amazing to you.
15:35like we walked
15:36by a trash can
15:38an old vintage
15:40New York City trash can
15:41on the boardwalk
15:42in Coney Island
15:43and you just say
15:44like I would die
15:46to have that trash can
15:47in my house.
15:48I've tried to get it.
15:50Yes.
15:51I mean you talk to the city
15:52several times.
15:53There is a pop-up sale
15:56everybody
15:56once a year
15:57that the MTA does
15:59and my husband
16:02and I pay particular
16:03attention this time
16:04of year
16:04it just ended
16:05about 9 days ago
16:07and we missed it
16:08this year
16:09devastated
16:10but the city
16:12does sell
16:13its
16:14pre-loved
16:16public
16:18municipal
16:19repositories
16:21for
16:22what we no longer want
16:24and they are beautiful
16:26they've changed.
16:27Yeah now they're like
16:28either the pull open
16:29or the push down
16:30but they used to be wire
16:30like they used to be
16:31like a giant wire.
16:32They were very beautiful.
16:34We got to get you one
16:35if anyone has a connection.
16:37I've tried to
16:38I've tried to find one
16:40for our house
16:41but it's
16:43it's not
16:44it's not helpful
16:44to the sanitation workers
16:46so
16:46it's too bold
16:48it's unwieldy.
16:51So when it came to
16:52doing Sex and the City
16:53I mean
16:53I
16:53you read that script
16:55for the first time
16:55it's the 90s
16:56you're mostly doing
16:58theater at that moment
16:59you were on Broadway
17:00in Once Upon a Mattress
17:02you were
17:02you know
17:03in Sylvia
17:04and you were trying to
17:05you know
17:06be in New York
17:07working
17:07walk up the street
17:08no one recognizes
17:09me actor
17:10and this script
17:11lands on your desk
17:12and I wonder
17:13did you have any hesitation
17:15did you think
17:16I don't know
17:16if I want to do TV
17:18what was your thought
17:19when the project
17:20came to you?
17:23My agent called me
17:24and he said that
17:24Darren Starr
17:25had written this script
17:27and that he
17:27had me in mind
17:28when he was writing it
17:29and I was so curious
17:30when I read it
17:31I was very mystified
17:33because I didn't think
17:35there was anything
17:35thus far
17:36to suggest
17:37that
17:37why would I be
17:39in his head
17:40when he was writing
17:40this part
17:41however I was familiar
17:43with Candace Bushnell's
17:45column
17:45I knew it
17:47someone had
17:47sent me
17:48the book
17:49that he had actually
17:50bought
17:50prior to
17:52this conversation
17:53and
17:54I knew about
17:55the New York Observer
17:56I read it
17:57when I read
17:59the pilot script

18:02I was really

18:09unfamiliar

18:16hesitation

18:39I shared

20:33of these women
20:34traipsing around
20:35Manhattan
20:35trying to find
20:36their way
20:36what do you
20:37who is that girl
20:38that's a

20:44that Marlo Thomas

21:20something exciting
21:22and colorful
21:23and interesting
21:24and I'd never
21:25seen women
21:26talk the way
21:27these women
21:28were talking
21:28I'd never
21:29heard women
21:30be that candid
21:30or transparent
21:32or naughty
21:34or salty
21:34or ribald
21:35that wasn't language
21:37and the kind
21:38of intimacy
21:38shared
21:39wasn't anything
21:39that I'd ever
21:41seen on the bigger
21:43little screen
21:44I think we discussed
21:44that at heart
21:45you're maybe
21:46more of a Charlotte
21:46like there's a
21:49there's a sense
21:49that the whims
21:50of Carrie
21:51wouldn't resonate
21:52with you
21:52off screen
21:53yeah I wouldn't
21:54be
21:54sharing
21:57that way
21:58that's not
21:59the way

22:03have that
22:04kind of
22:04conversation

22:06my female
22:07friends

40:16club's purpose
40:16was to

40:18yet published
40:19books
40:19to all of
40:21us try to
40:21find ways
40:22of supporting
40:22debut
40:23authors
40:24especially
40:25in
40:25in literary
40:26fiction
40:27and
40:28we were
40:29very
40:29you know
40:31super
40:32committed
40:32to this
40:32book club
40:33and over
40:34the course
40:34of the
40:34two years
40:35spent at
40:35the book
40:36club
40:36Molly
40:37said to
40:37me
40:37I think
40:38you should
40:38be publishing
40:39books
40:39and I
40:40said
40:40I don't
40:41know about
40:41I mean
40:42I didn't
40:43go to
40:43college
40:43I barely
40:44graduated
40:44from high
40:45school
40:45and I
40:46never
40:46could
40:47I never
40:47I don't
40:48know how
40:49to write
40:49a paper
40:49like I
40:50don't know
40:50what business
40:51I have
40:51and so
40:52she said
40:52no this
40:53is the
40:53way you
40:53can do
40:54it
40:54you can
40:54learn
40:54and so

40:56in print
40:56at
40:56Crown
40:57it was

41:19but I'm

41:21looking for
41:22stories
41:22that have
41:23yet been
41:24told
41:24elsewhere
41:25and there
41:26are plenty
41:27out there
41:28that are
41:28really exciting
41:29and really
41:29wonderful
41:30and it's
41:31been such
41:31a great
41:32success
41:32and our
41:33most recent
41:33book

41:36has been
41:37so beautifully

41:39it's an
41:41extraordinary
41:42tale
41:42based
41:43on a
41:44true story
41:44actually
41:44which is
41:45a little
41:45unusual
41:46for us

41:47a thrill

42:23a sense of
42:25how to prioritize
42:25every day
42:26do you wake up
42:27and you go
42:27this is what

42:52that surprises
42:54me most
42:54is all the
42:55women and
42:56men and
42:56parents who
42:57are holding
42:58down two
42:58and three
42:58jobs in
42:59our city
42:59across our

43:01who don't
43:01have the
43:02kind of
43:02support I
43:02have
43:03who are
43:03really just
43:04managing
43:04every single
43:05day
43:05so I
43:06don't think
43:06it's
43:06extraordinary
43:07that I
43:07get to
43:08do the
43:08kinds of
43:08things I
43:09like
43:09and have
43:09choices
43:10that I
43:11can find a
43:12way to
43:13sort my
43:13day
43:14I just
43:15have to
43:15say
43:16more so
43:17is how
43:17are they
43:18doing it
43:18how are
43:19these
43:19parents
43:19doing it
43:20who don't
43:20have what
43:21I have
43:21so great
43:23I want
43:28to get to
43:28audience

43:30last thing
43:30I wanted
43:31to ask

43:32a brief

44:32were setting

44:32she wore

44:33every single
44:34day
44:34and she
44:36had a
44:36disc man
44:37and she
44:39put the
44:39headphones on
44:40they called
44:40action
44:41and someone
44:41so that she
44:42was always
44:43thinking
44:44not getting
44:45distracted by
44:46a chaotic
44:47set
44:47she cared
44:50cared so much
44:52to be good
44:53and when
44:55the cameras
44:56rolled
44:56one might
44:58confuse
44:59that it
45:02was easy
45:03you know
45:03she had a
45:04way of
45:05being on
45:06screen that
45:07wasn't showing
45:08off any of
45:09her technique
45:10or any of
45:10the ways in
45:11which she
45:11put serious
45:13consideration
45:13and I think
45:14that's a very
45:15hard thing to
45:16do because
45:16there are
45:16actors who
45:17are letting
45:18you know

45:21just wasn't

46:23choosing

46:24because you
46:24think the
46:24playwright
46:25is really
46:25exciting
46:26and the
46:26person
46:27you're going
46:27to play
46:28opposite
46:28or the
46:28people
46:29and my
46:30great fear
