00:01:59He's come from Lewy City in the MLS, but obviously he's got a major job on his hands as the sporting director,

00:02:05working closely with the manager, whoever that may be.

00:02:08Then we'll discuss that as well after Aberdeen lose to Hibs.

00:02:12There's so many talking points on the programme, but I've got a great question, which was handed in by Trev,

00:02:17who says, after this weekend's results, do you think Celtic can split the two Edinburgh teams this season?

00:02:24Which I think gives you an indication of the way we're going on this programme.

00:02:29OK, well, let's look at the results.

00:02:32Here's exactly how it all panned out over the Saturday and the Sunday.

00:02:35Dundee United 3, St Mirren 1, Falkirk 2, Dundee 1, Livingston 1, Motherwell 2,

00:02:41Hearts 3, Celtic 1, Aberdeen 1, Hibs 2 and Rangers 3, Kilmarnock 1.

00:02:48And the reason why we're happy, Ruffey, is we've won a fair few quid.

00:02:51We're going to go on a big weekend away to Ibiza with our winnings because we picked four out of the six correctly.

00:02:56Yeah, we'll be trying to get it all year and it finally clicked at the weekend.

00:03:00First time, yeah, this season, but it was worthwhile waiting for.

00:03:03So, I think in a couple of games we were a wee bit fortunate.

00:03:09We'll keep it at the end of the day.

00:03:11The only one that actually looked at an absolute Stonewall 70, and I might as well do what I call a Tam McManus line.

00:03:19I told you.

00:03:19Yeah, I told you, exactly.

00:03:21He's only been here four weeks and he knows that's your line.

00:03:25Yep, I told you, Hearts 3, Celtic 1, Tam, discuss.

00:03:28Yeah, listen, I think from a Hearts point of view, the belief that it's going to go through that whole club now is incredible.

00:03:36I think that started the game really, really strongly the first four or five minutes, really got after Celtic.

00:03:41Once Celtic got the goal, I thought for 15, 20 minutes, they controlled the game.

00:03:45I thought Callum McGregor was outstanding in that pivot role for Celtic.

00:03:50Hearts eventually got to grips with that in the second half.

00:03:52I think Lauren Shantling did start to drop in on top of him and they got a grip at it in the second half.

00:03:56Second half, they ran out worthy winners, Peter.

00:03:58So, people who maybe thought Hearts were a flash in the pan, I think they'll be thinking differently now because I do believe that Hearts can go and win the league now.

00:04:06Well, it's caused all sorts of consternation, you know, from the Celtic perspective on what's going down, Ruffy.

00:04:14But the positive aspect, and I think this is something that we've got to look at, as Tam mentioned there,

00:04:19we've got to look at the positive, which is Hearts and the way they played, the way they went about their business.

00:04:24There's been a lot of criticism, and I think rightly so, of Brendan Rodgers talking about the DNA of Celtic

00:04:29and the way they play football and how they had to counter Hearts and their physical approach in this 4-4-2.

00:04:36But, I mean, is that sour grapes? Is that just someone who didn't get the fact that Hearts were up for it,

00:04:43Hearts were able to play? If you're a manager of Celtic, you should be able to accommodate the opposition

00:04:48and the way they want to play and how you overcome it.

00:04:51Yeah, I would agree with that 100%. I think if you come up against teams who play a certain style,

00:04:55I'm sure all the teams in the Premiership play differently. You've got to adapt to that.

00:04:59I think he was just trying to defuse the situation. But at the end of the day, as Tam said,

00:05:04initially I thought Hearts had more hunger to win the game. Celtic thought they would just go through

00:05:09their motions and eventually win the game. I do think, you might agree with me or not agree with me,

00:05:14I thought the turning point was Nigra. A wonderful bit of skill, fantastic save.

00:05:20If that hits the back of the net, 2-1 up, might have changed the game.

00:05:24But let's not take anything away from Hearts. The second half, they were far superior than everything Celtic did.

00:05:28I mean, the atmosphere was incredible to start with, which is exactly what David Kennis wanted.

00:05:34He wanted everybody up, charged up. You know what it's like? You've played there.

00:05:37Throw in. People are going nuts for a throw in.

00:05:40But they had a good opening spell and then slowly but surely Celtic got to grips with them.

00:05:46Yeah, listen, you wouldn't expect anything other than Hearts starting fast, Peter,

00:05:50because the momentum's with them, the fans, you know, it's like it's a great place to play football,

00:05:54particularly when you're on this type of run. So I thought they started brilliantly,

00:05:58but I have to give Celtic credit. And I thought Callum McGregor was the driving force within Celtic,

00:06:03particularly in the first half. And they couldn't get to grips with Callum McGregor.

00:06:08They tried to get Braga to drop down, but he was just running off the back of Braga.

00:06:11And he's right, Ruffick, because if you get that goal, it could have been a slightly different complexion,

00:06:15because then Celtic get momentum. But you have to credit Derek McKinnons,

00:06:19because he tactically changed it at half-time.

00:06:21What did he do?

00:06:22Well, he dropped, he dropped, they went with two, and then dropped one on to McGregor.

00:06:27And then McGregor was nil and void from then on. And what I thought they'd done brilliantly as well,

00:06:32is I thought the two central midfielders were so energetic. I thought Bikami was brilliant.

00:06:38And...

00:06:38Beningami.

00:06:40Beningami. I thought the two of them worked on a pair across the pitch, getting after Celtic.

00:06:44And I thought they'd done excellent. And they were getting under their skin every time they were taking a touch.

00:06:48They were ratting in. I thought the back line was excellent.

00:06:50I thought the boy coming off the left-hand side was sensational.

00:06:54Can I read these?

00:06:55Oh, tremendous. And one thing about this boy is, when he's backing people up and he gets you on the back foot,

00:07:00he's controlling the full-back at that particular time.

00:07:03I know he got on top of it a little bit better in the second half.

00:07:07And I just thought that they were growing into the second half, and I thought they were the dominant team.

00:07:12And once he got to 3-1, I think they were very comfortable within that. Celtic huffed and puffed.

00:07:17But, getting back to your comments about Brendan Rodgers, you know, Celtic have found a way to play against all these different,

00:07:24whether it's a low block, a mid block, an aggressive, route one.

00:07:28So they've managed to do that over the years.

00:07:30And unfortunately for them at the weekend, I think Hearts were worthy winners.

00:07:33Well, I did ask him after the game, you know, there's been a lot made of the board,

00:07:39and the criticism for their failure in the transfer window.

00:07:43But sooner or later, the buck stops with the manager.

00:07:47Always taking responsibility.

00:07:49There's never been a time that I haven't.

00:07:52So I suggest when you're saying, you said, is there a time?

00:07:55There's always a time.

00:07:56When you're the manager at Celtic, you're responsible for the results, despite whatever else happens.

00:08:03So that responsibility is on me, yeah.

00:08:07And he has to face up to that, Tam.

00:08:08I think now, you know, you've got a situation where you can visually see Celtic fans have had their say on the board.

00:08:15They know that the board is working off the self-preservation society mode.

00:08:21But sooner or later, the manager has to say to himself, well, I might not like some of the players that has been signed,

00:08:28whether it's him or through a sporting group.

00:08:32But sooner or later, he has to actually mould the team and get results from the team,

00:08:37and a team that can outspend everybody in the league.

00:08:40Yeah, I think the supporters will be looking at his team selection yesterday.

00:08:44You know, we spoke about it last week.

00:08:46I thought putting the two young boys in, you know, Donovan and Murray, in a game like that,

00:08:52I thought it was too much for them.

00:08:53I thought, first half, Donovan, you could tell he didn't want to let him inside.

00:08:57He kept driving the line.

00:08:58He kept showing them the line.

00:09:00And he got a little bit of joy from that.

00:09:02But second half, Peter, I thought that the two young boys, as I said,

00:09:06I thought Braga just went and played on him because he just went and played in that area,

00:09:09in terms of the two young boys.

00:09:10And I think you've got a £6 million player on the bench, trusty,

00:09:14who played alongside Scales and Atlanta in the Champions League,

00:09:17and both of them kept a clean sheet.

00:09:19So I know he's just back training, but I'd have went with that,

00:09:21or I'd have played Ralston before Donovan.

00:09:23Would that have been a factor low time, depending on where he was physically?

00:09:25I think he couldn't have been fit.

00:09:27You know, but playing the two young guys, when you've got Ralston on the bench as well,

00:09:31I know Ralston takes a lot of stick, but he's an experienced player.

00:09:33He's played at big games.

00:09:35I just think that was the wrong decision.

00:09:36I think Johnny Kenny ran about, don't think he's Celtic quality.

00:09:40Shinya Madder is still in the building.

00:09:42I think he's a better option there as well.

00:09:44So I think that if you're Celtic support, you're looking at that team selection and going,

00:09:49nah, Brendan, you've got that wrong.

00:09:50I thought he hung the boy out to dry.

00:09:52And I didn't buy into it.

00:09:54And I asked him about the whole situation.

00:09:56The balance.

00:09:56Well, he's talking about the balance.

00:09:58Austin trusty's a £6 million signing.

00:10:00And by the way, Alec, it's not as if it's one game.

00:10:03He hasn't had a sniff of that team at any point.

00:10:05Nobody's talking about him.

00:10:07No, and I think that's part of the problem.

00:10:09You know, we obviously go back to this recruitment situation.

00:10:11There's been plenty of players.

00:10:12Engels hasn't really featured.

00:10:14Bernardo's Baliquisha as well recently.

00:10:16So there has been issues with players who have been signed actually getting game time, Peter.

00:10:20So I take your point on board.

00:10:22I think if he had his time over again, he probably would have threw him in.

00:10:25But again, as we're trying to balance in relation to, I'm not exactly sure how fit he is.

00:10:31But, you know, it may well have been in hindsight when we were playing that experienced player in there.

00:10:35Because to go with the two young boys, I actually don't mind Tony Ralston.

00:10:39I think he's a steady Eddie.

00:10:41He does what he says on the tin.

00:10:42You know, he's honest.

00:10:43He'll charge up and down.

00:10:45And he tends to defend relatively well.

00:10:47So it was a big call to play the both young kids.

00:10:50Going back to this recruitment and the board and the whole shooting match,

00:10:53they need to draw a line under this and they need to start getting results.

00:10:56Because you're absolutely right.

00:10:57We've said this for weeks.

00:10:59That it's role reverse at Rangers.

00:11:00The manager was getting battered.

00:11:02The board were getting battered at Celtic Park.

00:11:05And it's now at the point.

00:11:07And I said this last week on this show that I felt as if Sunday's game was pivotal.

00:11:13And then obviously you've got the semi-final next weekend.

00:11:16And I think the real tide could turn if the results don't go for Celtic.

00:11:20I think he's under pressure, Ruffey, because you're looking.

00:11:24Do you know who the top scorer is?

00:11:25Negrin?

00:11:26Negrin.

00:11:27Five goals.

00:11:28And by the way, McGregor's got one.

00:11:30McCown's got two.

00:11:31Hattati's got one.

00:11:32There's nothing coming from the middle of the park.

00:11:34And I would say this.

00:11:36I think some people who've suggested that Callum McGregor is either off it or has passed it

00:11:43or is going on a downward spiral needs their head looked.

00:11:47He's been the best midfielder in the country for five years, easily for me.

00:11:51But he's now in a situation where you've got Hattati, who looks a shadow of the player he was.

00:11:57He was off it, yeah.

00:11:57Negrin.

00:11:58I mean, it's a big chance that he missed in the game.

00:12:00But that middle of the park for me is...

00:12:03They're not supplying anything.

00:12:05There's no goal threat from them.

00:12:06The reason why McGregor's getting it is because the partner...

00:12:09It is a partnership in the midfield, Alec, isn't it?

00:12:11If you're in there, you're in there with another two.

00:12:14You've all got to complement each other.

00:12:15You've all got to help each other out.

00:12:17There's nobody helping McGregor out there now.

00:12:19He's fighting it himself.

00:12:20You can see it.

00:12:21You know, he's trying to get everybody going, but it's not happening.

00:12:24You know, I just think the biggest feeling for Celtic...

00:12:27And the most positive thing for Celtic over the last two years is when things weren't

00:12:30going well 60 minutes, the bench would come on.

00:12:34There is no bench.

00:12:35There's no bench coming on now to turn the game.

00:12:38Yeah, but you say that.

00:12:39But you've got Bernardo and McCown who were turning in for games for him last year.

00:12:42But he's not playing Bernardo.

00:12:43No, and I know that.

00:12:44But what I'm saying to you is, you can't then go, they're not there.

00:12:48They are there.

00:12:49They're on the bench yesterday and they could actually have done that to mix them up.

00:12:52You talk about Hattati and then you also talk about Engels, who aren't really...

00:12:56I think a lot of the opposition are actually looking at Celtic now and saying,

00:12:59here we keep Callum McGregor quiet, because of the performance levels for some of the

00:13:04other guys.

00:13:04They just have done it the last four or five games and got joy.

00:13:06No, absolutely.

00:13:06But you even saw it in the Harps game.

00:13:09As soon as the ball went anywhere near McGregor, whoever's nearest to him,

00:13:14pressure's on him.

00:13:15Yeah, but Ruffey, you and I have a disagreement about this.

00:13:18And we probably will have a disagreement again about this, which is quite simply...

00:13:25And I've got no, you know, bugbear on certain players.

00:13:30I'm just observing players and what they contribute.

00:13:33And Engels is £11 million, Tam.

00:13:36And I'm sorry, but he takes corner kicks.

00:13:39That's it.

00:13:40He doesn't do anything as a midfielder that changes games, Tam.

00:13:42I think the game's too quick for him.

00:13:44I'm sorry, but he's a player who's been signed to go...

00:13:47Peter, he was a man of the match during the week against Durham Graz.

00:13:49He had a great game.

00:13:50One game, Tam.

00:13:51No, it's not.

00:13:51Many European games, he's been excellent.

00:13:57I think it's more time in the ball.

00:13:59Because obviously you want to be trying to do it domestically if it's too quick, then there's the issue.

00:14:02I don't think he's been good enough for Celtic domestically.

00:14:05Don't buy him for six games and one of them you've been pumped.

00:14:08The price tag's not helping him.

00:14:11I think if he came in there on £1 million, you wouldn't bother.

00:14:13You'd say he's a decent player.

00:14:14Because he's an £11 million player, you're thinking he's got to be better.

00:14:18So the price tag's not helping him either.

00:14:19But Tam, surely you look at a midfielder and you think, what does he do?

00:14:24What does he do?

00:14:25I mean, I know your DNA when you came to Rangers.

00:14:28I knew exactly what you were doing because I'd watched you at Sunderland, I'd watched you at Wolves.

00:14:32I knew the type of player you were and I'm paying you the ultimate compliment here.

00:14:36You were what I call the classic rat player.

00:14:40You rat it about, you made sure they didn't.

00:14:42If there was somebody in their midfield who was somebody who could cause trouble, you were there.

00:14:47You were on it and then you had the neat and tidy stuff to help with the midfielders who were around you that maybe had a bit more creativity than you.

00:14:55But this guy's brought in and I'm saying to myself, as a midfielder, what do you do?

00:15:00What do you do in a game that changes it, that influences it, that stops the other team doing it?

00:15:05I don't see it.

00:15:06When was the last time Celtic had a player like that?

00:15:10Which influence you got?

00:15:11A rat.

00:15:12The thing we'd have been...

00:15:13Scott Brown.

00:15:14Scott Brown was the master.

00:15:15I've never had anybody such a...

00:15:16But I think Callum McGregor's come in and actually, and I mean this with the greatest respect to both players,

00:15:21I think Callum McGregor's more of a technician and gets the ball moving than things.

00:15:24I think in terms of what you want from a Celtic six, he gets after people who knows how aggressive Scott Brown will ever be.

00:15:30But in terms of playing forward, goal contribution and driving the team forward from a playing style,

00:15:37I think Callum McGregor was a more ideal player.

00:15:39Absolutely, but Scott Brown, to his credit, was a good footballer as well.

00:15:43But he had that influence.

00:15:45The greater part of his make-up was he knew how to destabilise other people.

00:15:50He could noise them up within...

00:15:51You know, Scott could start a fight in the tunnel before the teams come on,

00:15:55but then he had that ability to go and play football as well as mix it up.

00:15:58But I don't see it.

00:16:01But I have to say, and I'll read out some of the points here,

00:16:05because AMG says that he feels as if I've got an anti-Brendan Rogers.

00:16:13You're so far from the truth that defies belief.

00:16:15We're observing a game where a manager, sooner or later, Ruffy,

00:16:19has to actually face up to the fact they're eight points behind hearts.

00:16:23They've been put out of the Champions League by a very poor team

00:16:27who are getting battered in the Champions League.

00:16:30They've lost a fortune.

00:16:31He's had, week in, week out, a rant, thinly veiled attacks on the board

00:16:36for leaving him high and dry.

00:16:38And I think Brendan Rogers has got a legitimate point on that.

00:16:41But to avoid anybody having selective hearing,

00:16:45consistently we've said Brendan Rogers is a really good coach.

00:16:50But I'm sorry, we're in the same...

00:16:51I think he says he was a late coach last week.

00:16:52He is, he is.

00:16:53But the problem with him is, he's in the same Groundhog Day movie again.

00:16:58It's, the team has dropped off dramatically because he's not getting his way,

00:17:02and the performances are dropping off as well.

00:17:05And people are now looking and saying, well, he can't walk.

00:17:07There's not a chance in hell he's walking

00:17:09because the Celtic fans would be all over the world making his life a misery.

00:17:14So he's going to sit it out, and he's either going to get sacked

00:17:17or the Celtic are in for a long, painful season, Ruffey.

00:17:20Yeah, I think now when he's getting interviewed after the game,

00:17:23he's getting asked questions he's never been asked before

00:17:25because he's always been winning and winning.

00:17:27But now people are asking him questions that he's got to come up with the right answers

00:17:30because he's threw the car thing in, which is out of character.

00:17:34You know, so that just shows you he is feeling it a wee bit, you know,

00:17:38because you would never have got that when they're winning all the time.

00:17:41But now he's on the negative side.

00:17:43He knows himself he's got to start winning games.

00:17:45But it's not as if some of these players are duff players.

00:17:48He's got to start using them because he's under pressure now.

00:17:51Yeah, well, obviously, as I said, the next couple of games are crucial

00:17:53because, as I said, I think the disconnect with the fans and the board

00:17:58is very much evident.

00:17:59Now, as I said a couple of weeks ago, if it starts dipping off,

00:18:03I think the manager will be fair game.

00:18:05And then, obviously, the players, because what happens then

00:18:07is you have a scattergun approach.

00:18:09And they've got some good players, Peter.

00:18:11And I went for Hearts to get beat last week.

00:18:15I went for Celtic.

00:18:15I fancied them.

00:18:16But the three players that they lost were big players.

00:18:20So you've got Carter Vickers, you've got Alistair Johnson,

00:18:22and then Iron Nacho was the main No. 9 through the middle.

00:18:25And they're so thin in the ground in that particular forward area.

00:18:29So a bit light in that respect.

00:18:31And unfortunately, Tom, Johnny Kenny couldn't hold the ball.

00:18:35He couldn't show for the ball.

00:18:37He just could not at any point hold that ball in

00:18:40and then let the midfielders get anywhere near him's support.

00:18:43Nah, I think he's a decent player.

00:18:46He's not a Celtic standard striker, Peter.

00:18:48But that's what Celtic have got.

00:18:49But the actuals have been obviously out injured now.

00:18:53The recruitment in the window,

00:18:55letting Adam Eda go and replace them with a free transfer.

00:18:59I think the chickens are coming home to the roost, Peter.

00:19:02The Celtic at the minute.

00:19:03They are toothless in the final third.

00:19:05They've got a guy who they tracked for two or three years,

00:19:07Baloguisha.

00:19:09Looks very average.

00:19:12You've got Tinecti on the other side, looks powder puff.

00:19:14He took him off.

00:19:15Took him off.

00:19:16He seems to have took a little bit of a dip.

00:19:19He came in like a whirlwind.

00:19:21He looks lightweight for the Scottish game.

00:19:23You know, you're coaching now,

00:19:25and we said this about Jimmy Tallinn when he came in at Aberdeen,

00:19:28and we say this about everybody.

00:19:30Do you think when somebody comes in and they're starting to show flair,

00:19:33or a team's starting to show flair,

00:19:35like Motherwell,

00:19:36you know, great to watch at times first hour,

00:19:38do you think the other opposition managers don't do their homework?

00:19:41Oh no, of course they do.

00:19:42They'll double up on them.

00:19:42No, that's exactly what they do.

00:19:43No, no, without a doubt.

00:19:44You actually get to a point where you sit in the whole week,

00:19:46and you say, right,

00:19:47here's this boy Tinecti.

00:19:48He'll drop his shoulder here,

00:19:50he'll go into the inside.

00:19:51Block that off.

00:19:51This is how you block it off.

00:19:52Yeah.

00:19:53No, no, absolutely.

00:19:54You know, so you do your homework.

00:19:55No, no, and we do it at a level as well, Peter.

00:19:57So I take the point on board.

00:19:58We try and identify if he's tracking back in,

00:20:01and it's the lesser of two evils.

00:20:02Just show him down the line,

00:20:03and then defend the ball,

00:20:04come across the six yard box.

00:20:06Now, I don't know about you, Tam,

00:20:07but I know you'll appreciate this.

00:20:09The battle between Devlin and McGregor was...

00:20:11I loved it.

00:20:12It was fantastic,

00:20:13because there is a...

00:20:14I don't know if we've still got the picture,

00:20:15but there's a picture of the two of them at one point.

00:20:17I mean, there they are.

00:20:19There they are.

00:20:20And I was sitting in the press box,

00:20:22and I'm looking, I'm going,

00:20:23now this is what you want.

00:20:24McGregor with a wee bit of fight about him,

00:20:26and Devlin well up for it.

00:20:28He was ratting about,

00:20:29battering everybody that moved.

00:20:30Yeah, I loved it.

00:20:31As I said,

00:20:32I thought hearts in the middle of the park were excellent,

00:20:34but this wee guy was epitomising

00:20:35everything you would want for a hearts team.

00:20:37He was in every battle,

00:20:38every fight,

00:20:39every tackle,

00:20:40and I'm actually surprised,

00:20:42you know,

00:20:42and I'm sorry,

00:20:43I'm not surprised that that's his particular style,

00:20:46but I'm surprised that Callum McGregor

00:20:47actually get involved in all that,

00:20:48because not only he's kind of just verbally

00:20:50kind of giving it to him and things,

00:20:51but it just shows you,

00:20:52not only as a manager,

00:20:54kind of a little bit under pressure

00:20:56with some of his comments off the park,

00:20:58he's feeling it as well,

00:20:59because he's the guy

00:20:59that's actually driving them on the park,

00:21:01so he feels as if he is to getting borrowed

00:21:02and this type of stuff.

00:21:03And see when it's not going well,

00:21:05they're rolling him out every week

00:21:06to try and firefight.

00:21:08You know,

00:21:08he came into the press box,

00:21:09he never ducked a question,

00:21:11and he said,
