00:01:15You know, Scott McTominay nominated in the Ballon d'Or, Tony Carline Weir in the women's section,

00:01:21Hibbs winning Europe, Dundee United get a brilliant draw, and Rangers beat Victoria Pilsen.

00:01:26It doesn't get any better.

00:01:27It's been a brilliant week.

00:01:28You know, I watched the Hibernian performance last night, fantastic.

00:01:32Same with Dundee United and Rangers as well, and you're right, it's not often we have weeks like that,

00:01:37so we should enjoy it and revel in the fact that we're making progress.

00:01:41Yeah, we should celebrate it.

00:01:43I suppose the difficult one, and I think all three of them deserve credit,

00:01:46what was the most surprising or the most credible of the three?

00:01:51Is it fair to judge?

00:01:53Probably Hibbs.

00:01:53I think Hibbs going to Partizan will grade.

00:01:55They've got a decent pedigree in European football.

00:01:58OK Red style, Belgrade are the dominant force over there,

00:02:00but not many would have tipped Hibbs to go away from home and pick up a 2-0 win,

00:02:04so it sets it up nicely to come back to Easter Road.

00:02:07They'll be favourites to qualify now.

00:02:08I don't think the tie's quite dead.

00:02:10I think if they get the first one at Easter Road, then it could be game one,

00:02:13but I think Hibbs were comfortable in the game last night.

00:02:15I think the sending off obviously changes the game,

00:02:17but I thought even 11 v 11, Hibbs are the better side.

00:02:20They look compact, they look dangerous in the break.

00:02:22Same in Midgetland in Denmark.

00:02:24They're not seeing similar performance.

00:02:27I thought that Hibbs were excellent and they deserved it,

00:02:29and Dundee United would be a great point to draw as well.

00:02:32Yeah, you watched the game against Hibbs.

00:02:34I was up at a dense part.

00:02:35They didn't really have to exert themselves too much to get the win up there,

00:02:39but what was it that impressed you about them?

00:02:42I just thought that having that experience of going and playing in Europe

00:02:46when you're away from home, you need to really do a job in the opposition,

00:02:49and I thought Hibbs did that.

00:02:51As Tam said there, at the start of the game,

00:02:54you could see that Partizan had a real pedigree.

00:02:57Very young team, but really good technical players,

00:03:00and they probably should have went one up in the balance of play,

00:03:03but then I thought Hibbs against the ball were fantastic.

00:03:06I thought they had a real good shape about them,

00:03:08good discipline, and they carried a real threat,

00:03:12and I just think they got credit to Davey and Liam

00:03:15that they got every aspect right.

00:03:17Out of possession, they were compact,

00:03:19they were stopping passing lanes into strikers,

00:03:21they were forcing them to play wide,

00:03:23and then they were, with the pace of Boyle and the presence of Bowie,

00:03:27they were hitting them in a counter-attack,

00:03:28and listen, Bowie last night I thought was outstanding.

00:03:31He really contributed to the performance.

00:03:33He got the player sent off, he won them a penalty kick,

00:03:36but he's general play.

00:03:38So I think they'll be really, really pleased

00:03:39with the overall performance,

00:03:41and for me, for a European performance going away from home,

00:03:44it probably couldn't have been any better.

00:03:46We were raving about him last week,

00:03:48because he's rag-dolling players,

00:03:51and he can turn them and hold them off

00:03:52and bring other players into the game,

00:03:54and then of course he scores two good goals.

00:03:57Do you read him enough to think this is really good news

00:04:00for Scotland at an international level with this boy?

00:04:02I think the most important bit is, you know,

00:04:06that he's realised his potential now.

00:04:07I remember looking at him last year,

00:04:09you know, and the possibility of bringing him up loan from Fulham,

00:04:13and he was just, again, really talented boy,

00:04:16and I think even in his time at Hibs,

00:04:17great credit to the job they've done at Hibs,

00:04:19he looks physically, you know, a real specimen at the moment.

00:04:22He looks quick, he looks athletic,

00:04:24and I think all the potential that everybody's seen in him,

00:04:27he's now beginning to realise that,

00:04:29and to put in a level of performance last night,

00:04:31I think the system that Hibs play,

00:04:34the most important player in that system is your number nine,

00:04:36and the way Bowie played it last night,

00:04:38he basically won in the game, I thought.

00:04:40Great performances all round,

00:04:41but I think he was the main player,

00:04:43and that's somebody for me that is beginning to really realise his potential.

00:04:47Yeah, great result there,

00:04:49and again, Ruffey, you know,

00:04:50we've been talking about the necessity for teams out with Celtic and Rangers

00:04:55to suddenly start contributing,

00:04:56or we are going to drop right away from that top ten in the coefficient,

00:05:01so suddenly I sat down and I thought to myself,

00:05:03OK, let's see Dundee United,

00:05:05Jim's taking it a bit in the neck about foreign players that he's brought in,

00:05:09and the lack of Scots,

00:05:11but boy, I mean, they looked composed last night against Rapid Vienna.

00:05:15Yeah, they did, 2-1, you know,

00:05:18I was hoping they would get the equaliser because they deserved it,

00:05:21you know, they really put a good shift in,

00:05:23the new players are beginning to look gel together,

00:05:26and you're right, you know, for the last five or six years,

00:05:29they've been the team that have been letting us down with the coefficient,

00:05:31you know, and they were getting beat against teams like Malt and all that,

00:05:35and Gibraltar,

00:05:36but now they've got a wee bit of experience now in European football,

00:05:39and it can only be good for us.

00:05:41Yeah, absolutely, great for Dundee United to get that.

00:05:44By the way, can I just mention one thing,

00:05:46and I'm only talking about it from a striker's point of view,

00:05:50but the goal last night from Sapsford was absolutely top drawer,

00:05:56because to get on his right side and hit it so early,

00:06:00that was absolute class.

00:06:02Yeah, he looks a real find for them as well.

00:06:04I think that Dundee United were a constant threat on the counter-attack last night.

00:06:07I thought, listen, Rapid Vienna had a good side,

00:06:09a good pedigree in Europe.

00:06:10They dominated most of the game, most of the ball,

00:06:12but I thought whenever Dundee United went forward,

00:06:14they looked as if they carried a threat,

00:06:16and, listen, just comes over his shoulder.

00:06:18It's an instinctive one for a striker.

00:06:19Hits it early, and the goalkeeper can't react or set his feet.

00:06:22So, brilliant result for them.

00:06:24It's a 50-50 game now.

00:06:26They'd be looking to get back to a packed hand ice and finish the job.

00:06:29But Rapid Vienna, I thought, showed in flashes last night

00:06:31that they're a really good side as well.

00:06:33So, listen, I think Hibs will go through.

00:06:35I think it's still on the balance.

00:06:36I think Rangers will go through.

00:06:37I think it's still on the balance for Dundee United,

00:06:39but they've gave themselves a chance.

00:06:40Yeah, I think Hibs could face,

00:06:43it looks as if it could be AEK Larnica.

00:06:45They're 4-1 up against Leisure Warsaw.

00:06:48Aye.

00:06:48I think they play losers in that game.

00:06:50Losers, they play Warsaw.

00:06:52So, they'll play Warsaw probably.

00:06:53So, I think Hibs, if they get through and play Leisure Warsaw,

00:06:57they're more than capable of beating them over two legs.

00:06:59If we can get both those clubs into the group stages,

00:07:03suddenly you're talking maybe four, five, six million pounds.

00:07:06It's a game-changer.

00:07:07It is, absolutely.

00:07:09And we've went, the first leg certainly is really, really encouraging

00:07:12that we're going to get there as well.

00:07:14And I think the three teams, actually, I know.

00:07:17As I say, I watched Hibs last night.

00:07:19I'd just seen the highlights at Dundee United.

00:07:20But I just know, as Tam said there,

00:07:23the atmosphere that they generated at Tannadise on a European night,

00:07:26the punters right behind them,

00:07:28I fancy they ain't going to go through as well.

00:07:29And I do think, you know, as a result of this week's games,

00:07:32I think the three teams will progress.

00:07:35Yeah, and mentioning Rangers against Victoria Pilsen,

00:07:38you know, it's amazing.

00:07:40It's only happened in Scotland.

00:07:41Tony knows it well as a manager.

00:07:42One week, you're the top man.

00:07:44The next week, you know, you're a complete dud.

00:07:48Amazing, the transformation from the disappointment of Motherwell,

00:07:52the criticism, the boos of the fans towards the players coming off,

00:07:54and then suddenly, you know, he didn't hold back Russell Martin.

00:07:58He absolutely leathered them, got the response he was looking for,

00:08:01certainly got the energy out of them.

00:08:04And I think that's what you're looking for.

00:08:06You want a response from the players, and boy, did they get it.

00:08:09Yeah, they have it, and they've done it in Europe the last couple of years.

00:08:13You know, had poor results at home,

00:08:15and then going away and playing against quality European sides

00:08:17and getting a good result.

00:08:19I think we've spoke about it in tons of times,

00:08:22and I think Tam was saying, you know,

00:08:23the difference is when they go into Europe,

00:08:25other teams come out and try and make a game of it.

00:08:28Whereas our teams, like Motherwell and that,

00:08:30make it stuffy and hard to beat,

00:08:32you've got to break us down,

00:08:33where the European sides come and make an effort.

00:08:36So I think the style of play that the Rangers players have as well

00:08:41suits European-style football.

00:08:42Yeah, great week for Scottish football.

00:08:44We should be singing the praises of it.

00:08:45Before we start to look in depth at what's happening

00:08:49in the Scottish Premiership over the weekend,

00:08:51Tony, well-documented the disappointment of leaving Dundee,

00:08:57especially since you managed to keep them in the division.

00:09:02It must have been a blow from your own point of view,

00:09:05because you would have thought to yourself,

00:09:07job done, kept them in the division,

00:09:08chance to build for next season.

00:09:10Well, it was a surprise, you know,

00:09:11and it's well-documented now,

00:09:13and it's kind of time to move on from it.

00:09:15But yeah, I mean, I thought, you know,

00:09:17at the start of the season,

00:09:17we probably exceeded the expectations in the first year,

00:09:19managing top six.

00:09:21And then last year, you know,

00:09:22the probably difficulties we had with,

00:09:25you know, the defensive part of the team and experience,

00:09:27you know, we suffered a wee bit of movement

00:09:28into the bottom six.

00:09:29But once you get into that bottom six,

00:09:31then it becomes, it's all about survival.

00:09:33You know, if you remember our first game,

00:09:35it was against Hearts at Tynecastle,

00:09:37and we beat Hearts 1-0,

00:09:38and Neil Critchley lost his job,

00:09:39because everybody's kind of worried about

00:09:41the team goes down.

00:09:43So, you know, the brief was to keep

00:09:46Dundee up in the division,

00:09:47and we did that.

00:09:47So that's when it came as a surprise.

00:09:49But listen, I've been involved in football

00:09:51for a long time.

00:09:52It moves on.

00:09:53I've moved on.

00:09:54And it's now all about just whatever

00:09:55the next challenge is,

00:09:56and what I'm doing at the moment,

00:09:57just ready myself for that.

00:09:58And would you consider going anywhere?

00:10:02You look at all,

00:10:03any opportunities that present themselves,

00:10:05you know,

00:10:05but at the moment, it's, you know,

00:10:06I'm quite enjoying,

00:10:07you know, a wee bit of time out.

00:10:09I'm doing a lot of work visiting clubs,

00:10:11and doing some work with Scottish FA,

00:10:13and doing some media work.

00:10:14So I'm quite enjoying that.

00:10:15But yeah, the time will come,

00:10:17you know,

00:10:17when I'm really keen to get back in again.

00:10:19Yeah.

00:10:19How difficult is it now

00:10:20in this changing situation for managers?

00:10:25Because the league itself,

00:10:26Stephen Robinson said,

00:10:27the league itself doesn't lend itself

00:10:29to having any kind of period

00:10:32where you think you're safe.

00:10:34Yeah.

00:10:34You're almost three games away from that,

00:10:36and you even look at theirs,

00:10:37I think there's,

00:10:38is that five new managers?

00:10:39Starting the season this year.

00:10:40So, yeah, it is.

00:10:42Listen, it's an occupational hazard

00:10:44being a manager, isn't it?

00:10:45But it's the passion for it

00:10:47that drives you, you know,

00:10:48and I'm certainly as passionate

00:10:49and as keen to get back in as I can,

00:10:53because it's something that you love

00:10:55and you want to do again,

00:10:55and I really enjoyed,

00:10:56and I look back on my time at Dundee

00:10:58with real pride,

00:10:59you know,

00:10:59in terms of the development of players,

00:11:01you know,

00:11:01reaching quarterfinals,

00:11:02and locally winning the Derby games

00:11:04and all that kind of stuff,

00:11:05but I just look forward

00:11:06to the next challenge.

00:11:07Yeah, absolutely,

00:11:08and we're going to be talking

00:11:09about your old mucker, Derek,

00:11:11because if you think there's pressure

00:11:13in that bottom six,

00:11:15there's pressure now

00:11:15because he's got to win the league

00:11:16in the next 10 years.

00:11:19You get,

00:11:20we'll hear from him

00:11:21and see where his take on it all is,

00:11:23but that's harsh for you.

00:11:40has been speaking to the media

00:11:41ahead of his side's meeting

00:11:42with Dundee tomorrow night

00:11:43at Ibrox,

00:11:44and the Jers boss says

00:11:45he wants to see something similar

00:11:47to what Rangers put on display

00:11:48against Victoria Pilsen

00:11:49on Tuesday nights.

00:11:51Different challenge,

00:11:53different opposition,

00:11:55different ways

00:11:59they're going to approach it,

00:12:00so we have to try

00:12:00and make the best educated guess

00:12:02in how Stephen and his coaching staff

00:12:03are going to approach the game.

00:12:05So we've watched them,

00:12:08I like a lot of the stuff

00:12:08they're trying to do

00:12:09and trying to implement

00:12:10and new managers

00:12:10so they're changing obviously

00:12:11and they're still getting

00:12:12to grips with that.

00:12:14But they played really well

00:12:15against Hibs

00:12:16and were really unfortunate

00:12:18actually,

00:12:19like they had a few

00:12:19really good moments in the game

00:12:20so we need to be prepared.

00:12:22Ahead of that game,

00:12:23the team that Russell Martin selected

00:12:24was leaked on social media

00:12:26several hours before

00:12:27it was officially announced

00:12:28by the club.

00:12:29However, Martin says

00:12:30he has much bigger problems

00:12:31to concern himself with.

00:12:33Well, I think there's enough

00:12:34stuff in this job

00:12:34to be concerned about

00:12:36and to focus on

00:12:37all the time

00:12:38so I'm not going to

00:12:40stress overly

00:12:42about the team being leaked.

00:12:43As I said,

00:12:44we spoke about it here,

00:12:46it's not ideal,

00:12:47but I also believe

00:12:47that no one's done it

00:12:49to hurt us

00:12:50or harm us

00:12:51so if I ever felt that

00:12:52it would be a different thing

00:12:54but it's modern football

00:12:56and I think

00:12:57when people are saying

00:12:58if they're in or out of the team

00:12:59you just have to have an awareness

00:13:00of who you're telling

00:13:01and all of that stuff

00:13:03but yeah,

00:13:04there's other stuff for me

00:13:05to get stressed about

00:13:06and I don't think

00:13:07that's one of them.

00:13:08Rangers are back in action

00:13:09tomorrow night at Ibrox

00:13:10as they take on Dundee

00:13:11kick-off

00:13:12is at 5.45.

00:13:16being nice to each other

00:13:19a different game

00:13:20from the one I was watching.

00:13:28to get back in the game

00:13:29they never made the effort

00:13:30to do it

00:13:32a difficult one for them

00:13:35players will be buzzing

00:13:37everybody will be
