00:00Comey Pleads Not Guilty to Fed Charges
00:02Former FBI Director James Comey pleaded not guilty Wednesday,
00:07following his federal indictment on charges of making false statements to Congress and obstructing justice.
00:12The Department of Justice accused Comey of lying to Congress during 2020 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
00:19The hearing was in regard to the FBI's handling of the investigation into alleged Russian collusion
00:24with then-candidate Donald Trump's campaign during the 2016 presidential election that Trump won, per NewsNation.
00:31If convicted, Comey faces several years in prison.
00:35He has requested a jury trial.
00:37Trump fired Comey during his first term.
00:40He described the investigation into the collusion as a hoax and a witch hunt.
00:44Comey is a crooked guy, has been for years, and he got caught, Trump said this week.
00:50Look, he lied.
00:52This is just a simple case.
00:53He totally lied.
00:55He made a very definitive statement, and a very important statement concerning him,
00:59and he got caught in an outright lie.
01:02Former White House aide and now-acting U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan is the lead prosecutor.
01:07Halligan was sworn in in September after U.S. Attorney Eric Siebert resigned.
01:11The Washington Post reported Siebert declined to prosecute Comey because there was insufficient evidence.
01:17Comey's subsequent indictment has some Democrats alleging the Trump administration
01:21is weaponizing the Department of Justice.
01:23My family and I have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump,
01:30Comey said on social media.
01:32But we couldn't imagine ourselves living any other way.
01:35We will not live on our knees.
01:38Federal Judge Michael Nachmanoff will oversee the case.
01:41He was nominated by President Joe Biden in 2021.
01:44Trump's camp has pushed back on Nachmanoff's assignment by accusing him of being a crooked
01:49Joe Biden-appointed judge, the Associated Press reported.
