00:00Women who change the world.
00:30My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.
00:34My spirit rejoices in God my Savior, Mary, Mother of Jesus.
00:39No one had ever paid unusual attention to young Mary.
00:42She was born in a poor family.
00:44Her parents were a man by the name of Joachim and his wife Anna.
00:48They were God-fearing people known for their humility and compassion and never had children.
00:54Being very aged, they continued to ask God to send them a child.
00:57They even made a vow that if they had an infant, they would dedicate that child to the service of God.
01:04Owing to their patience and faith, the Lord finally sent them a great joy.
01:09Anna had a daughter.
01:10The newborn child was given the name of Mary, which means in Hebrew, Mistress Hope.
01:15The girl didn't appear to stand out from her peers.
01:18Eventually, however, she was engaged to a man named Joseph,
01:22who could not promise her affluence but was a kind man with a stable reputation.
01:26One day, when Mary lived in Joseph's house, she heard a voice that told her that she was blessed to give birth to the Son of God.
01:35When Mary was close to giving birth, she and Joseph had to go on a journey to Bethlehem.
01:40The city was so crowded with people, so Mary and Joseph found a humble stable to stay in.
01:45There, Jesus was born.
01:47The shepherds were the first to hear the good news of Jesus' birth.
01:50The wise men also came to worship Jesus.
01:54King Herod wanted to get rid of a child because the child was the newborn king of the Jews.
01:59So the holy family escaped to Egypt and stayed there until Herod died.
02:04When Mary was twelve, Joseph brought her into his house.
02:08He left her for some time, and when he returned, he found Mary expecting a baby.
02:12First, Joseph accused Mary in betrayal, but an angel of the Lord appeared to him,
02:18saying that the child is from the Holy Spirit, and he will save people from their sins.
02:23Joseph glorified the God of Israel, who had given grace to him and guarded the child.
02:29Thus, Mary and Joseph were the parents of Jesus, the Son of God.
02:33Historians say Mary had other children.
02:36Jesus had four brothers and more than one sister, though his sisters are not named.
02:41After the birth of Jesus, Mary was given a great responsibility,
02:46but she was also given a tremendous gift.
02:49Mary's service to God did not end that first Christmas when Jesus was born.
02:54Mary mothered Jesus for the thirty years that he lived with them in their poor Nazareth home.
02:59From childhood to manhood, Mary loved and nurtured Jesus as he grew into manhood.
03:04As the Son of God reached manhood and launched out into his public ministry,
03:08Mary ushered him onto center stage and faded into the background.
03:13Little is mentioned of her throughout Christ's public ministry.
03:16John's Gospel tells us that Mary was at the foot of the cross when Jesus was crucified and died.
03:22After Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven,
03:25Mary and the disciples continued to pray together and take care of one another.
03:29On the day of Pentecost, Mary was there with the disciples when the Holy Spirit descended upon them and transformed their lives.
03:38After the Spirit came, they were able to preach boldly about Jesus and to give their lives for the gospel.
03:45Mary, as the mother of Jesus, is better known than any other female character in the Bible
03:50and has been the best-known woman in the world since those days of the manger in Bethlehem.
03:55Through church tradition, when Mary's life on earth was complete,
03:59she was assumed or taken body and soul into heaven.
04:03Mary was a woman who was blessed by God.
04:06Though she seemingly had nothing to offer,
04:08she was chosen by God himself to be a part of his plan of redemption of mankind.
04:13Mary is given the gift of the fullness of life, body and soul in the risen Lord.
04:18Her lifelong trust and faith in God was rewarded.
04:22Mary anticipates our own ultimate union with God.
04:26Mary was chosen to love and nurture the Son of God as her firstborn
04:30and raise him in the knowledge of God.
04:33Mary's holiness lies in persistent, faithful listening to God's Word.
04:38She looked for the Word of God in people and events,
04:41listened to that Word, pondered it, and then acted on it.
04:44The New Testament accounts of her humility and obedience to the message of God
04:49and has made her an exemplar for all ages of Christians.
