00:00Women who change the world.
00:30When you do good, do it quietly, as if you were throwing a stone into the sea.
00:38Mother Teresa, Agnes Goksa Bojaksu, was born August 26, 1910, in Macedonia, to a financially
00:47comfortable Albanian family.
00:49The family had a good status and was able to afford to have two houses.
00:54Mother Teresa's parents had always taught their children to care about helping those
00:59in need and caring about their religion.
01:01Her mother had always encouraged her kids into being part of the church because they would
01:06have spiritual and emotional support.
01:08Her father was a successful construction business worker and was able to supply his family with
01:14all the necessities.
01:16He was very involved in the politics at the time, mostly involved with the reforms of the
01:21Albanians, which was seen as a possible cause of his sudden death.
01:25At the death of her father, Gonsha was only seven years old.
01:29Her mother, Drana Bojaksu, put up a textile business due to the fact that she was now in
01:34charge of the family.
01:36At school, Agnes enjoyed reading, especially articles about missionary life and service in
01:41India, which later persuaded her to become a missionary nun.
01:46Deeply religious, she became a nun at the age of 16, joining the Loretto Abbey in Ireland.
01:52Two years later, she was given the name Sister Teresa.
01:57Agnes grew up in the Roman Catholic Church and decided to devote her life to God at an
02:02early age.
02:03When she turned 18, Agnes joined the Sisters of Loretto to become a missionary to India.
02:09Mother Teresa did not have her own family.
02:12She saw in humanity a family, and she loved the whole world.
02:16Her words of wisdom regarding the family are timeless treasures that we can contemplate
02:21even today.
02:23If you want to bring happiness to the whole world, go home and love your family, she said.
02:28In 1950, Mother Teresa formed a group within the Catholic Church called the Missionaries
02:34of Charity.
02:35She described the purpose of the Missionaries of Charity as an organization that would take
02:40care of the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those
02:46people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become
02:52a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone.
02:56The Mission took over a temple in Calcutta.
02:59The Sisters working there had, as their main goal, filling with dignity and love the last
03:04days of poor people who were dying.
03:06The physical conditions of the shelter were not imposing, although they were completely
03:11clean.
03:11But the emotional atmosphere of love and concern struck most visitors as truly saintly.
03:18Later, the Missionaries of Charity slowly expanded their educational work, at one point
03:23running nine elementary schools in Calcutta.
03:27They also opened a home for orphans and abandoned children.
03:30In the 1970s, Mother Teresa opened works in Jordan, Amman, England, London, and the United States,
03:38Harlem, New York City.
03:40In 1988, Mother Teresa sent her Missionaries of Charity into Russia and opened a home for
03:46AIDS patients in San Francisco.
03:48At her death in 1997, her sisters numbered 4,000.
03:53They tended the neglected in over 120 countries.
03:57She also founded orders for brothers and lay people.
04:01Her army of many thousands never tried to convert the needy to her religion.
04:05Instead, they were to do something beautiful for God.
04:10Mother Teresa was a humanitarian.
04:12Her entire life was fully devoted to helping the poor, the sick, the needy, and the helpless.
04:18Mother Teresa had some lofty goals.
04:21When she first started the Missionaries of Charity, there were only 13 members.
04:25Today, the group has over 4,000 members who care for people all over the world.
04:32After being beatified in 2003, Mother Teresa was canonized on September 4, 2016.
