00:00Kilmar Abrego Garcia returned to the U.S. after being mistakenly deported to El Salvador
00:05and now faces federal criminal charges. His lawyers say the government is retaliating
00:10for his legal fight to stay in the country and they want the charges dropped.
00:16Since returning, Abrego Garcia has been held in pre-trial detention as federal officials
00:22allege he helped transport immigrants illegally into the U.S. A DHS report details a December
00:282022 traffic stop where he was found with eight passengers in his vehicle and no luggage,
00:34raising human trafficking concerns. The report also identifies him as a member of the MS-13 gang.
00:41Abrego Garcia's lawyers claim the administration relied on a convicted smuggler deported five
00:46times as a key witness, receiving lenient treatment while Abrego Garcia is allegedly only a driver.
00:53His legal counsel is also asking the federal court in Nashville to release Abrego Garcia
00:58on August 22nd when a temporary hold expires. The court had cleared him for release earlier this
01:05summer, but the order was paused after his lawyers warned ICE could detain him immediately
