00:00The first season of college football's pay-for-play era has arrived.
00:04The Week 1 schedule with three top 10 matchups proves why the biggest teams and the biggest stars are breaking the bank.
00:12How much they're being paid, however, may surprise you.
00:18With each school now allowed to pay its players directly from its own pool of $20.5 million,
00:24the amount of money going to college football players in the Power Four conferences is expected to double in 2025,
00:32according to NIL Marketplace and tech company Open Doors.
00:36Last year, with endorsements from collectives and other commercial payments,
00:40football players in the major conferences made a total of $1 billion.
00:44This season, those payments are expected to reach $1.9 billion,
00:49with the revenue sharing from schools accounting for $1.4 billion of that.
00:54The total shoots up to $2.4 billion in 2026 and $2.6 billion in 2027.
01:01Whether all those billions are worth it is up for debate,
01:05but consider the Week 1 schedule of prime matchups with games that could change the trajectory of the entire season.
01:12Top-ranked Texas and third-ranked Ohio State will kick things off.
01:16It's a rematch of their college football playoff semifinal in January,
01:20won by the eventual national champion Buckeyes.
01:22They are also the top two revenue-producing schools in the country.
01:27Ohio State head coach Ryan Day believes his guys are ready.
01:30I think it's great for college football playing a game like this opening weekend.
01:34And I have a tremendous amount of respect for Sark, for his coaching staff, for the players.
01:41And we're excited to play these guys.
01:43You know, it's rare that you would, you know, kind of play someone like this towards the end of the season
01:47and start the regular season with them.
01:49But here we are.
01:50A pair of Tigers will decide which Death Valley is more deserving,
01:54as fourth-ranked Clemson plays host to ninth-ranked LSU.
01:58Two veteran quarterbacks, Clemson's Kate Klubnick and LSU's Garrett Nussmeyer,
02:03will try and give their respective programs a leg up in the playoff race under the lights Saturday night.
02:09Very storied program, and obviously, you know, they have a really cool environment there.
02:14So I think, for one, just embracing that opportunity to go into an arena like that,
02:18to a place like that, you know, and to try and silence the crowd, I guess you could say.
02:23You know, that's kind of your mindset when you're playing a big road game.
02:25All alone in the Sunday spotlight, sixth-ranked Notre Dame visits 10th-ranked Miami,
02:31or as some old-timers like yours truly like to call it, Catholics versus convicts.
02:36Both teams are replacing star quarterbacks, but had the money to restock.
02:41The Hurricanes paid former Georgia star Carson Beck more than $6 million to keep their playoff hopes intact.
02:48He's trying to stay grounded before kickoff.
02:51They're stout all across the board, very talented team with a great coach.
02:55And again, like I said, it's just another football game, right?
02:59Like, that's the motto, that's the mindset, and another opportunity for us to compete, right?
03:03It's the first game. Everyone's super excited, super pumped, and, you know, we're ready for the challenge.
03:09Also this weekend, No. 8 Alabama heads to Tallahassee to take on unranked Florida State.
03:15A stumble by the Crimson Tide, however, could put a big dent in their playoff hopes
03:19should they need a tiebreaker with the committee in December.
03:23For Straight Arrow News, I'm Chris Francis.
03:25Since it's a C Brandon Johnson, I'm Chris Riccik.
